    In the spirit of Thanksgiving,

    Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall,Sr. spearheaded the distribution offood giveaway to residents of theVillage of Hempstead in KennedyPark on Tuesday, November 20

    and Wednesday November 21,2012.

    Over 800 families were providedwith meals, in addition to numer-ous churches and food pantries.

    The food was donated largely byNational Grid as a part of the com-

    panys Superstorm Sandy recov-ery efforts.

    Other local Hempstead donorswho contributed canned goods,turkeys and other foods includedKey Food, Stop and Shop, DavidLee, business owner and president

    of the Federation of KoreanAmerican Associations of GreaterNew York, North Shore LIJ, vil-lage employees and ChamsarangKorean Methodist Church. Many

    of these donors have donated tothe Annual Turkey and Thanks-giving Food Giveaway for the lastseveral years.

    In the wake of HurricaneSandy, many families who werealready struggling have found itthat much harder to put food onthe table for the holidays, saidMayor Wayne J.     Dossman, Jr. will be traveling to theLong Island region to deliver a messagethat resonates with 118 chapters and10,000 members of 100 Black Men ofAmerica, Inc. around the world in con-junction with celebrating the milestonesof the 2nd oldest chapter of 100 BlackMen of America, Inc.

    100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.was established in the year of 1974. Theorganization is affectionately known as

    the Organization that makes a Differ-ence.Since its inception, the organization

    has focused on four key areas which arementoring, education, health and well-ness, and economic empowerment. The100 works with a long list of stake-holders such as corporations, civic &community organizations, universities,

    and colleges along with its base of

    membership to fulfill the mission ofMentoring across a Lifetime. Theorganization is actively involved in thecommunity at large where its mission isat stake.

    The success of the organization ismeasured by the success that its pro-grams such as youth forums, healthfairs, financial literacy programs, andeducational initiatives such as the Afri-can American Academic History Chal-lenge (History Bowl) has on future gen-erations.

    Stakeholders in the community pro-vide substantial support in helping 100Black Men of Long Island, Inc. worktowards its goal of becoming the pre-

    mier mentoring organization in theworld.It takes a village to raise a child is a

    Curley M. Dossman, Jr., Chairman of theBoard of Directors, is a long standing mem-ber and execu-tive officer of100 Black Menof America. Hetook the helm asChairman of theBoard on Sep-tember 28, 2012in At lanta,Georgia.Dossman waselected tobecome the fifth leader of the organizationduring its 26th Annual Conference in June.Prior to rising at the top of the leadership of100, Mr. Dossman served as Vice Chairmanof Operations at 100 Black Men of America.Mr. Dossman served as Chairman of More-house College Campaign for a New Century,Peachtree DeKalb Airport Authority Advi-sory Council and Piedmont Park Conser-vancy

    Curley M. Dossman is a lawyer by profes-sion. He holds a B.A. from Morehouse Col-lege in 1973 and J.D. from Washington Uni-versity School of Law in 1976, and he servesas Vice President of Community Affairs and

    President of Georgia-Pacific Foundation,Georgia-Pacific LLC since 1994. He servedas a Director of Leadership Georgia, Trustfor Public Land, Atlanta and Path Founda-tion.

    A prominent public servant in Georgia, Mr.Dossman has held positions of trust, respon-sibility, and accountability.

    Accordingly, he served as State Vice Presi-dent of Government Affairs at AT&T from1984 to 1994; Legislative Assistant at U.S.Senator Russell B. Long from 1979 to 1984;Assistant Director of Louisiana State Plan-ning Office from 1978 to 1984, and as Inter-Agency Liaison Officer at Office of FederalAffairs and Special Projects for the State ofLouisiana from 1976 to 1978 and he hasserved as Chairman of National Black ArtsFestival and Professional Association of

    Georgia Educators.Never one to refuse a position of service,

    Curley Dossman currently serves as Treas-urer of Great Schools Atlanta and Chairmanof Metro Atlanta YMCA, Metro AtlantaChamber of Commerce and Atlanta Down-town Improvement District. He is ChairEmeritus of Atlanta Victim Assistance Pro-gram. He serves as Director of LeadershipAtlanta, Great Schools Atlanta and HighMuseum of Art. He is a Member of AtlantaRotary and was Member of United Way ofAmerica - National Corporate AdvisoryCouncil, Atlanta Public School System Char-ter Review Commission and Georgia Part-nership for Excellence in Education. He wasa Member of Chair Partnerships Committeeat University of Georgia Task Force onBlack Males in Higher Education.

    100 Black Men of America

    100 Black Men Of America is a men's civic organization and serviceclub whose stated goal is to educate and empower African-Americanchildren and teens. The organization's mission statement is "to improvethe quality of life within our communities and enhance educational andeconomic opportunities for all African-Americans." The organizationsmottos real men giving real time and what they see is what theyllbe describes the organization's goals of providing positive role mod-els and leaders to guide the next generation of African-Americans andother youth. The membership is predominantly African Americanprofessionals, businessmen, civic leaders and administrators, educa-tors, as well as people from other walks of life.

    HistoryThe overall concept of the 100 began in New York in 1963when a group of concerned African-American men began to meet toexplore ways of improving conditions in their community. The groupeventually adopted the name, "100 Black Men, Inc." as a sign of soli-darity. These men envisioned an organization that would implementprograms designed to improve the quality of life for African Ameri-cans and other minorities. They also wished to ensure the future of

    their communities by aiming an intense number of resources towardyouth development. These members were successful black men fromvarious walks of life. These visionaries were business and industryleaders such as David Dinkins, Robert Mangum, Dr. William Hayling,Nathaniel Goldston III, Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher, andJackie Robinson.

    Taking shape around the countryDr. William Hayling, a member ofthe NY organization, had relocated to Newark, NJ and sought to repli-cate the 100's impact in that area. In 1976 Dr. Hayling formed the 100Black Men of New Jersey. A movement had been born. Men acrossthe country began to form 100 Black Men organizations to leveragetheir collective talents and resources. Chapters were formed in LosAngeles, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, Nassau/Suffolk, Alton, and Sacramento.

    On September 21, 1983, a three-hour meeting was held in Washington,D.C., among representatives from the Los Angeles, New York, NewJersey, and St. Louis chapters. This meeting was to evaluate the feasi-

    bility of establishing a National Organization for 100 Black Men. Thismeeting was held during the annual weekend meeting of the Congres-sional Black Caucus. Representative of St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Atlanta,the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, Nassau/Suffolk and Sacramentomet for a second time in Las Vegas, May 1113, 1984, in Las Vegas.The men engaged in extensive discussions about the most effectivestructure to support the growth and governance of 100 Black Menchapters.

    The third meeting was held May 1618, 1986 in Las Vegas. At thismeeting it was agreed that the best model for a newly-formed nationalorganization was a federation governance model. This model lever-aged human and financial resources, and supported chapter growthwhile preserving chapter autonomy. It was also voted that a NationalSteering Committee would include the Presidents of each chapter,along with two members from each chapter.

    A final meeting was held on October 2, 1986 at the L'Enfant PlazaHotel in Washington. Chapters represented were: Los Angeles, St.

    Louis, Indianapolis, Atlanta and New Jersey. The chapters decided thatthe name of the organization would be: "100 Black Men of America,Inc."

    The following individuals were elected as officers: Dr. William Hay-ling (Los Angeles) - President Oliver Lofton, Esq. (New Jersey) - Vice-President Moses Gray (Indianapolis) - Secretary Jesse C. Swanigan(St. Louis) - Treasurer

    On May 27, 1987, in Atlanta, Georgia, this newly formed organizationintroduced itself to the nation during its first national conference.Noted speakers included the late Alex P. Haley and the late HonorableMaynard H. Jackson.

    In 1989, Nathaniel R. Goldston III became the organization's secondNational President and grew the organization to 43 chapters. Mr. Gold-ston used his business acumen and resources to expand the number ofchapters and enhancing the organization's infrastructure. Under Mr.Goldston, the organization acquired its first national office and its first

    Executive Director. Along with Mr. Goldston, Warren Valdrey (VicePresident), T.B. Boyd III (Treasurer) and Moses Gray (Secretary)served as elected officers.

    In 1994, Thomas W. Dortch Jr. was elected the third National Presi-dent. That year, he spearheaded an aggressive plan entitled Four ForThe Future. Since that time, the organization has strategically chan-neled its resources toward programs that support these important areas:Mentoring, Education, Health & Wellness, and Economic Develop-ment. The 100 has identified these areas as being critical to the futureof African Americans.

    Along with Mr. Dortch, LeRoy G. Walker, Jr. (Vice President), Wil-liam L. Wimberly (Vice President), Hon. Roosevelt F. Dorn (Vice

    President), Lonnie J. Carr (Treasurer), and Albert E. Dotson, Jr.(Secretary). In 1997, under Mr. Dortch's leadership the organizationexpanded internationally with the chartering of the Birmingham, Eng-land chapter. Additional international chapters and interest groupsfollowed including: Nassau Bahamas, Goree Island, Senegal, King-ston, Jamaica, U.S. Virgin Islands, and London, England. It was alsoin 1997 that the organization purchased its World Headquarters build-ing on historic Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. Also, during Mr.Dortch's tenure, the Collegiate 100 was formed to focus the next gen-eration on mentoring.

    In 2004, Albert E. Dotson, Jr., Esq. was elected the fourth President/Chairman of the Board and during his inaugural address he recognizedthe contributions of his predecessors. Dr. Hayling was acknowledgedfor bringing the various 100 Black Men organizations under the singlebanner of 100 Black Men of America. Mr. Goldston was recognizedfor his personal investment of talent and resources that grew the num-ber of chapters focused on the 100s mission. Mr. Dortch was ac-knowledged for expanding the organization's resources and building

    capacity for the 100 to carry out its mission. Chairman Dotson referredto their contributions as the Hayling Harvest, the Goldston Gain andthe Dortch Dividend.

    The other newly elected officers in 2004 were Curley M. Dossman, Jr.(Vice Chair Operations), Frank Hayes (Vice Chair Finance), Dr.Joshua W. Murfree, Jr. (Vice Chair Programs), John S. Kendall (ViceChair of Operations) and Anthony B. O'Neill (Secretary). Since 2004,Chairman Dotson has focused the organization on leadership and de-livering impactful and innovative programs in each of the Four For

    The Future areasDuring Dotsons tenure the 100 launched the Lead-ership Development Institute (LDI) to provide a vehicle through whichmembers of the 100 could fine tune and enhance their leadership skills.The 100 also created their Community Empowerment Project (CEP)which ensures that the city where the 100 convenes its Annual confer-ence receives a social and societal impact that is sustainable by thecommunity.

    From 2006 to 2009, the 100 helped launch the National Cares Mentor-ing Movement (formerly Essence Cares) to mobilize millions of ableAfrican Americans to take the lead in fulfilling our society's spiritualand social responsibility to our children. The 100 expanded its focuson advocacy for responsible public policy, including sponsoring theInternationally broadcast debate on urban issues among Presidentialcandidates Senator Barack H. Obama, Senator Hillary R. Clinton andSenator John Edwards. The 100 has consistently increased its re-sources to deliver relevant new programs and enhance signature pro-grams. The organization is moving their mission and strategic direc-tion forward as it implements Mentoring the 100 Way Across a Life-time

    In 2012, Curley M. Dossman, Jr. was elected the fifth President/Chairman of the Board, along with Dr. Joshua W. Murfree, Jr. (ViceChairman of Operations), Dr. Howard Rasheed (Vice Chairman ofPrograms), Marvin Dickerson (Vice Chairman of Development), Mil-ton Jones (Vice of Finance), and Dr. Mark Alexander (Secretary).

    Today the organization has grown to over 118 chapters with more than10,000 members who continue to strive to improve the quality of lifein our communities and enhance the educational and economic oppor-tunities for African Americans. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. hasmore than 100,000 youth participants annually in its mentoring andyouth development programs. With a mission to improve the quality oflife and enhance educational opportunities for African Americans,members of the 100 continue to serve as a strong force in the world byovercoming the cultural and financial obstacles that have limited theachievements of some African Americans, particularly young AfricanAmerican males. Members of the 100 have made outstanding progress,proving that Blacks canand do, excel as corporate leaders, communityleaders and as independent business owners.

    Organization and membership100 Black Men consists of over 118local chapters (each named after their respective region, e.g., 100Black Men of New York, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, etc.) 100 BlackMen of America is the overarching organization that provides a na-tional governing structure, charters new chapters, and provides for

    inter-chapter coordination. 100 Black Men is a non-profit 501 c3 or-ganization and has no political or religious affiliations or ties.

    100 Black Men has four principal program areas: Mentoring, Educa-tion, Health and Wellness, Economic Development. As of 2009, 100Black Men has roughly 100,000 students enrolled in its mentoring andoutreach programs.

    About 100 Black Men ofLong Island, Inc.

    The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.was founded in 1974 by a group of men fromthe Long Island region who believed thatLong Island was ripe for such an organiza-tion. Today the organization continues to takean active part of the community where itsinterest is at stake. The 100 Black Men ofLong Island, Inc. is now part of an interna-tional coalition of 118 chapters, and is amembership body comprised of over 10,000men worldwide.

    The Long Island Chapter is the secondoldest chapter of 100 Black Men of America,Inc. Since its inception 100 Black Men ofLong Island, Inc. has been working in thearea of Education, Mentoring, Health &Wellness, and Economic Empowerment. The

    four areas of Education, Mentoring, Health& Wellness, and Economic Empowermenthave evolved into our international missionover the last couple of decades.

    The logo of the organization stands for abroad group of men who have exemplifiedexcellence in a variety of structures comingtogether to give 100 % effort to improve ourcommunity. Mentoring is considered to bethe crown jewel of the organization, and oneof our national models is What they seetheyll be! Sustainability of creating successacross many generations is a key indexof the impact of our mission.

    The organization is membership based andis comprised of such men as lawyers, doc-tors, judges, businessmen, school administra-tors, teachers, health care professionals, lawenforcement personnel, accountants, finan-

    cial serves professionals, and high rankingretired Military Personnel.

    The organization seeks men who are will-ing to donate a couple of hours per month togive back in the area of mentoring or workon one of the standing committees of theorganization. Some of the recent accomplish-ments of the organization over the last coupleof years have been 2nd Place finish in 100Black Men of America, Inc. Dollars andSense Financial Literacy Program, Ringingof the NASDAQ Bell during Black HistoryMonth, and the recent work of the mentoringcommittee which has led to a CongressionalEndorsement of our Candidate to West Point.

    The organization remains committed torecruiting professional African-Americanmen as service members of a great chapter of100 Black Men of America, Inc. Each year

    the organization participates in two nationalcompetitions of 100 Black Men of America,Inc. which are the African American Aca-demic History Challenge (History Bowl) andthe Dollars and Sense Financial LiteracyProgram.

    Born and raised in Brooklyn,Phil Andrews, Phil learned earlyon the importance of communityand education. He attendedBrooklyn Technical High Schooland served several years in the US

    Navy and Army Reserves. Later,attended York College and JohnJay College where he undertookparalegal studies before beginninga 20-year stint in law enforcement.

    Philip Andrews started and ran ahaircut chainHaircut Hutbefore settling down to anotherpassion, public relations. Today,he is the founder and President ofP.A. Public Relations Company.

    A long-standing member of100 Black Men of Long Island,Phil rose to the position as Presi-dent of the organization in 2010and has leverage his role as a

    public relations specialist to pro-mote 100 in the Long Island re-gion. Under his leadership, themembership of 100 has grown.

    A great communicator, Mr.Andrews winning ways haveearned him many accoladesSmall Business Person of theYearby Nassau Council of Cham-bers of Commerce, RooseveltChamber of Commerce, and West

    Indian Chambers. He has receiveda number of proclamations andcitations from former NassauCounty Executive Thomas S.Gullotta, former Town of Hemp-stead Supervisor RichardGuardino and Assembly-womanEarlene Hooper Hooper, 18thAssembly District of Long IslandNY to name a few.

    Phil's has been featured in multi-platform publications, Black StarNews, The New York Beacon,Amsterdam News, Minority Busi-ness Review, The Network Jour-nal, Hempstead/Uniondale Times

    and more. He is also featured in"15 Years of Minority BusinessDevelopment" a book publishedby Mr. Robert Adams. Mr. An-drews is listed in Who's Who inBlack America and InternationalWho's Who. He in addition to hiswork with 100, Philip Andrewssits on several Boards includ-ingthe Roosevelt Chamber ofCommerce, Roosevelt Kiwanis

    Survivors should not wait to settle withtheir insurance companies before applyingfor SBA disaster loan assistance, says a SBA

    in a communiqu, a copy of which was re-ceived by this reporter.

    According to the agency, survivors of Hur-ricane Sandy in eligible New York countiesshould return their completed applications,even if they have not settled with their insur-ance company.

    Waiting to file an SBA application couldcause unnecessary delays in receiving disas-ter assistance, and survivors may miss theapplication deadline. Returning the loan ap-plication is an essential part of the disasterrecovery process. said Frank Skaggs, direc-tor of SBA Field Operations Center East.

    The communiqu further states that if asurvivor does not know how much of theirloss will be covered by insurance or othersources, SBA will consider making a loan forthe total loss up to its loan limits, providedthe borrower agrees to use insurance pro-ceeds to reduce or repay their SBA loan.

    On behalf of the Obama family Michelle, Malia, Sasha and Bo I want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.

    For us, like so many of you, this is a day full of family and friends; food and football. Its a day to fight the overwhelming urge to take a nap at least until after dinner. But most of all, its a time to give thanks for each other, and for the incredible bounty we enjoy.

    Thats especially important this year. As a nation, weve just emerged from a campaign season that was passionate, noisy, and vital to our de-mocracy. But it also required us to make choices and sometimes those choices led us to focus on what sets us apart instead of what ties ustogether; on what candidate we support instead of what country we belong to.

    Thanksgiving is a chance to put it all in perspective to remember that, despite our differences, we are, and always will be, Americans first andforemost.

    Today we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world. The ability to spend time with the ones we love; to say what we want; toworship as we please; to know that there are brave men and women defending our freedom around the globe; and to look our children in the eyeand tell them that, here in America, no dream is too big if theyre willing to work for it.

    Were also grateful that this country has always been home to Americans who see these blessings not simply as gifts to enjoy, but as opportuni-ties to give back. Americans who believe we have a responsibility to look out for those less fortunate to pull each other up and move forwardtogether.

    Right now, as we prepare to gather around our dinner tables, there are families in the northeast who dont have that luxury. Many of them havelost everything to Hurricane Sandy homes, possessions, even loved ones. And it will be a long time before life goes back to normal.

    But in the midst of so much tragedy, there are also glimmers of hope. Over the last few weeks, weve seen FEMA personnel, National Guardand first responders working around the clock in hard-hit communities. Weve seen hospital workers using their lunch breaks to distribute sup-plies. Families offering up extra bedrooms. The fire department advertising free hot showers. Buses full of volunteers coming from hundredsof miles away. Neighbors sharing whatever they have food, water, electricity and saying again and again how lucky they are to have a roofover their heads.

    It would have been easy for these folks to do nothing to worry about themselves and leave the rest to someone else. But thats not who we are.Thats not what we do.

    As Americans, we are a bold, generous, big-hearted people. When our brothers and sisters are in need, we roll up our sleeves and get to work not for the recognition or the reward, but because its the right thing to do. Because there but for the grace of God go I. And because here inAmerica, we rise or fall together, as one nation and one people.

    Thats something to be grateful for today and every day.

    So to all the Americans doing your part to make our world a better place it is my privilege to serve as your President. To all our service mem-bers it is my honor to be your Commander in Chief. And from our family to yours, happy Thanksgiving.

    Business Loan Ceiling The $2,000,000statutory limit for business loans applies tothe combination of physical, economic in-

    jury, mitigation and refinancing, and appliesto all disaster loans to a business and its af-filiates for each disaster. If a business is amajor source of employment, SBA has theauthority to waive the $2,000,000 statutorylimit.

    What Restrictions are there on Loan Eligibil-ity? Uninsured Losses Only uninsured orotherwise uncompensated disaster losses areeligible. Any insurance proceeds which arerequired to be applied against outstandingmortgages are not available to fund disasterrepairs and do not reduce loan eligibility.However, any insurance proceeds voluntarilyapplied to any outstanding mortgages doreduce loan eligibility.

    Ineligible Property Secondary homes,personal pleasure boats, airplanes, recrea-tional vehicles and similar property are noteligible, unless used for business purposes.Property such as antiques and collections areeligible only to the extent of their functionalvalue. Amounts for landscaping, swimming

    pools, etc., are limited.

    Noncompliance Applicants who havenot complied with the terms of previous SBAloans are not eligible. This includes borrow-ers who did not maintain flood and/or hazardinsurance on previous SBA or Federallyinsured loans.

    Is There Help with Funding Mitigation Im-provements?

    If your loan application is approved, youmay be eligible for additional funds to coverthe cost of improvements that will protectyour property against future damage. Exam-ples of improvements include retainingwalls, seawalls, sump pumps, etc. Mitigationloan money would be in addition to theamount of the approved loan, but may notexceed 20 percent of total amount of disasterdamage to real estate and/or leasehold im-provements, as verified by SBA to a maxi-mum of $200,000 for home loans. It is notnecessary for the description of improve-ments and cost estimates to be submittedwith the application. SBA approval of themitigating measures will be required beforeany loan increase.Is There Help Available for Refinancing? SBA can refinance all or part of priormortgages that are evidenced by a recordedlien, when the applicant (1) does not havecredit available elsewhere, (2) has sufferedsubstantial uncompensated disaster damage(40 percent or more of the value of the prop-erty), and (3) intends to repair the damage.

    Homes Homeowners may be eligible forthe refinancing of existing liens or mortgageson homes, in some cases up to the amount ofthe loan for real estate repair or replacement.

    Businesses Business owners may beeligible for the refinancing of existing mort-

    gages or liens on real estate, machinery andequipment, in some cases up to the amountof the loan for the repair or replacement ofreal estate, machinery, and equipment.

    What if I Decide to Relocate?You may use your SBA disaster loan to relo-cate. The amount of the relocation loan de-pends on whether you relocate voluntarily orinvoluntarily.     Manganos ThirdConsecutive No-PropertyTax Hike BudgetApproved By Legislature

    Restricts Spending While Delivering Essen-tial Services

    For the third year in a row, Nassau CountyExecutive Edward P. Manganos No-Property Tax Increase Budget was passed bythe County Legislature. The budget restrictsspending for a second consecutive year while

    continuing to deliver essential services forresidents. Aggressive fiscal management anda continued commitment to spending cuts isevident as County Executive Mangano andthe Republican Legislative Caucus have cut

    over $290 million in spending from Nassausbudget since 2009.

    This budget paves the way for economicgrowth while protecting families and seniorsby holding the line on property taxes andrestricting spending, said County ExecutiveMangano. After two hard years of sharedsacrifice, Nassau County is on a firm, stablepath as we fostered a government of lessspending, fewer employees and fewer ap-pointees. The progress we have made overthe past two years corrects our Countys past

    when Nassau taxed too high, spent too muchand reformed too little.

    The fiscal discipline and responsible budget-ing choices made by County Executive Man-gano and the Republican Legislative Caucusover the last two years addresses the fiscallychallenging times in which we live and cor-rects wasteful past practices. Without raisingproperty taxes, County Executive Manganoaddresses a nearly $400 million deficit inher-ited from the prior administration and keptpace with double-digit increases in pensionand health care costs, unfunded mandates, astagnant economy and poor municipal prac-tices. The administration has truly addressedfiscal challenges of historic proportions andhas moved forward by implementing signifi-cant spending reductions and landmark re-

    forms that together have laid the groundworkfor recurring savings. Nassaus fiscal prob-lems evolved over a decade and are beingstructurally corrected in responsible andtransparent budget plans advanced by the

    administration. While there is more work tobe done, the County is clearly on a moreefficient path to a brighter future.

    What Every Long Islander Should KnowMapping an Illogical System

    Imagine we could start over and recreate Long Island, rebuilding our com-munities from the ground up.

    When it comes to providing basic services like who hauls away our gar-bage, provides our water or patrols our streets, how would you design it?

    Would you create 124 different school districts? 41 police departments?How about 73 garbage disposal agencies, 227 fire and ambulance depart-ments, 54 water agencies, 110 library groups or 26 sewer agencies? Oh

    and lets throw in that each one of these departments can be organized in atleast 20 different ways including departments in incorporated villages, com-missioner-led special districts and associations.

    Yup, Im confused.If we were starting anew, I doubt we would create anything this complex

    yet that is exactly what exists on Long Island today.How on earth did we get here?

    In the early 1900s, people began to move out of the city and into the rural,unincorporated areas on Long Island. As new communities sprung up, sodid the need to provide services to those communities. As Levittown wasformed, for example, so was the Levittown school district, fire district andgarbage district.

    The same story continued to play out for nearly every new community onthe Island.

    This becomes a dizzying array of bureaucracy that costs us, not just interms of taxes, but in our ability to effectively manage our resources or ad-dress regional challenges.

    Lets take the example of water.We have one aquifer system that serves as the sole source of our drinking

    water for all of Long Island but we have 54 different agencies charged withproviding water to their local communities.So whos in charge of managing the aquifer system to make sure it doesntget contaminated? The answer, unfortunately, is nobody.Each agency is tasked with providing water within its own jurisdictionalboundary, but the aquifer doesnt care about jurisdictional boundaries. Atoxic plume that starts in Bethpage doesnt just stay in Bethpage, it migratesto Farmingdale, Massapequa and beyond.There are many examples of how the complexity of our district lines makesgovernance less efficient, more expensive, slower to react to a crisis andharder to organize pro-active planning to create a more sustainable future.Yet so few Long Islanders understand how we are structured in terms ofthese services. And from the water example, its clear, it matters.

    Ask yourself, do you know who provides your services? Do you knowwhen elections are held? The Long Island Index launched a new series ofmaps to help explain it. Take a look.     1. Set a sales

    target. It maysound obviousbut if you dont have something to aim forthen you wont know when you have suc-ceeded. You shouldnt have just a monthlysales target, if times are tight then this shouldbe weekly. Write it on a board so the wholecompany can see it and make everyone un-derstand what it is and why it is there.

    2. Reconnect with former clients. Its 7 to 10times more costly to acquire new clients thanit is to sell to current or former clients.

    3. Generate new sales from current clientswith a new product offering. Expanding yourrevenue per sale.

    4. Sharpen your tools -Most salespeople dont

    spend enough time working on improvingtheir sales skills and techniques. If your busi-ness is slower in the summer, take the time tolearn how to sell more effectively and getinvolved in a sales coaching program. Beginnow by putting your own plan in place tosharpen your sales skills and hone your salestechniques. Great salespeople do not blamethe seasons for their slump.

    5. Increase sales activities - In the summermonths companies and salespeople cut theirsales activities. They actually have said tome, If we are not going to sell anything,what is the point? It is completely back-wards thinking and the type of thinking thatwill keep you exactly where you are. Increas-ing your sales activity will increase salesresults.

    6. Dont believe the hype - One of the biggestproblems with this summer slump chatter isthat salespeople use the chatter to fuel the fireand make excuses about themselves and theirbusiness. People tend to believe everythingthey hear and see instead of challenging thesummer slowdown belief. If you perceive noone is around and everyone is on vacationthen you are setting yourself up for a negativeself-fulfilling prophecy and your sales willtake a long siesta.

    7. Mix business with pleasure. Schedule asummer client party at the pool, park, or base-ball stadium. Schedule lunches or coffeeswith past clients, or invite your A list ofpeople over for a barbecue. Get creative andmix business with pleasure- its a great wayto enjoy the summer AND generate new busi-ness. I have found client parties are a greatway to drive new sales and have fun!

    8. Refine and increase your marketing efforts.Analyse what's working for you and whatisn't. Can you improve your methods? Is ityour message?

    Publicity Campaigns for Small Businesseshas the ability to win the war for Small Busi-nesses over a period of time. Brand awarenesstakes time and specific strategies for anysmall business to reap its benefits. Publicitycampaigns should be based on specific goalsof each particular business. Every businessshould map out a well designed plan to takeadvantage of newsworthy items that appear intheir business on a regular basis. The problemthat arises with most small businesses is thatthey are so consumed with many of the day today activities that public relations campaignsget put on the back burner. Publicity is onearea where most small business get can morebang for their buck. Where else can a busi-ness get more for their buck in exchange for alittle time invested, and creativity? Someyears ago I sent an article to a magazine by

    the name of Shoptalk Magazine, and theyfeatured a story about the Haircut Hut Barber-shop Franchise which I ran for a period of tenyears. The cost of the three page story was atyped letter, envelope and stamp. The maga-zine space in which the article appeared wasvalued well over three thousand dollars.Some areas in which publicity are overlookedin small businesses are anniversaries, additionof key employees, renovation, new web site,new location, new product line, strategic alli-ances, partnerships, etc. Top of the mind

    awareness for small businesses must be de-veloped in a systematic matter. The best wayto accomplish such a huge task is to attackyour campaign by developing a systematicpublic relations campaign around specificthings that occur in your business. Look howMcDonalds capitalized on the number ofhamburgers sold. They leveraged the numberof sales into one of the biggest publicity cam-paigns. Small businesses can also leveragenewsworthy events that happen in their busi-ness on a regular basis. The art of the big dealshould be a business owners primary way ofthinking. If you do not make a big deal out ofthe accomplishments of your business no oneelse will think second about it, matter of factno one will know about your great news.Newspapers need news. We live in an infor-mation society, and if newspapers can get agreat story for free most newspapers willcover your story if it fits their need for spe-cific content.The greatest thing about publicity is that it is

    just the beginning when your article firstappears in a publication. Your featured articlecan now be copied and sent to friends, youcan use it in a press kit or put it on your web-site, or event use it in your online newsletters.Publicity is a door opener and if used cor-rectly it can open many more doors and getyou many more features. The hardest thingabout a publicity campaign is to get it rolling;it has a snowball effect once you get started.One added benefit, people tend to support theproduct and services in which they are famil-iar with on a regular basis. Both large andsmall companies benefit from publicity.There is no such thing as any company beingtoo well known.

    pay for your office, store, showroom or ware-house. Also equipment purchases, creation of

    your business cards, design andprinting of your letterhead, office

    stationary and registering of yourbusiness. Your inventory or mer-chandise costs, purchases of yourcomputer and its printer, your faxmachine, phone system and filingcabinets are all costs. Do not for-get your salary ~d required pay-roll demands.

    Now that you realize you willhave expenses related to being abusiness owner. Let us explore

    the concept or need of finances. They are legaland creative sources of capital or cash for theinspiring as well as the established entrepre-neurs.Traditional sources of money for new entre-preneurs are: personal savings, loans and/ormonetary gifts from family members andfriends, credit card advances (practice caution)

    and a bank loan. Remember, business bankloans are given when acceptable and profes-

    sional business plan is developed and deliv-ered. O.P .M. or other people money is a fan-

    tasy of entrepreneurs. Be prepared to pay yourfinancial gifts or windfall bank in a timelyfashion and with interest. Your credibility,character and future obtainment of more loansdepend on your ability to repay.

    Some creative sources of loans are investorssuch as 'angels' and venture capitalists. Doyour research or due diligence on individualsand institutions who can make loans. In busi-ness partnerships, often times one or morepartners help finance the business venture.May they be an 'invisible' (i.e., behind thescenes) partner or a 'day-to-day' working part-ner.

    Black folks do not usually have a 'rich uncle'or major legacy via a will, left for them tostart or expand their business. Also, freemoney or grants are target to non-profits.That's after a proposal and documents are

    submitted to qualify.

    Managing money properly is just as impor-tant as making money. It is an appropriate

    phrase: "a fool and his money will soon part."Practice budgeting and bookkeeping, under-stand your financials, create a positive cashflow, revenues and profit statements. Do notlet only your accountant or CP A understandyour company's financial insights.

As President of theWomen's National Basketball Association(WNBA), she oversees all of the leagues day-to-day business and league operations.

    Prior to joining the WNBA in 2011, Richie wasSenior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officerfor Girl Scouts of the USA, where she was respon-sible for the Girl Scouts brand, communications,publishing, marketing, and web-based initiatives.She also spent time at the advertising agencyOgilvy & Mather, where she worked on a series ofcampaigns for prominent clients, including Ameri-can Express, Pepperidge Farm, Ponds, Huggies,and Kotex.     Kam Williams: Hi, Laurel, thanks for thetime.Laurel J. Richie: Thanks, Kam.

    KW: What interested you in going from theGirl Scouts to the WNBA?

    LJR: Early on in my career, when I was

    working at an advertising agency, I went to avery senior-level meeting and I distinctlyremember the inside of the boardroom: everysingle seat was occupied by a man. In thatmoment, I made a private promise to myselfthat I would do everything in my power tobring more diversity to these rooms whereleaders gathered and decisions were made.As my career unfolded and I worked on awide range of clients and gained experienceacross lots of different industries, the busi-

    nesses I enjoyed the most where those thatfocused on women. This passion really cameto the forefront when I made the move fromadvertising to the Girl Scouts and then, veryclearly, when I made the decision to join theWNBA. As the longest-running womensprofessional sports league in the country, theWNBA is a great product comprising 132 ofthe best female athletes in the world. Andwhen you look beyond the players to owners,coaches, trainers, accountants, and chiefoperating officers -- it's a wonderful exampleof what women can achieve in sports and inbusiness.

    KW: How do you hope to generate greaterinterest in the league and its superstars likeMaya Moore and Candace Parker?

    LJR: The summer of 2012 is turning out tobe very special. We are celebrating the 40thanniversary of Title IX and the Olympics aretaking place in London, and we have seenincreased interest in and exposure of ourplayers. The WNBA is very proud of the factthat all 12 members of the U.S. WomensSenior National Team are WNBA players.For them to represent our country on an in-ternational stage is terrific. Millions aroundthe world will see them and have the oppor-tunity to get to know them not only as greatathletes, but as interesting and inspiringwomen.

    KW: Why is there seemingly a stigma onwomens athletics which is reflected in a lagin the WNBAs ratings in comparison to the

    NBAs?LJR: We are a young league now in our16th season and we have seen our atten-dance and viewership increase for each ofthe past five years. Our growth is a directresult of the fact that our game is excitingand highly competitive, and our in-arenaexperience is a ton of fun. Once people cometo a game, they are hooked. In many ways, Ithink the WNBA is changing the way Amer-ica views women and is having a positiveimpact on the way America views profes-sional athletes. Were showing the worldwhat women can be as athletes and whatathletes can be as citizens.

    KW: To what do you credit youre not onlyclimbing the corporate ladder but breakingthe glass ceiling and reaching the pinnacle

    of success in the business world, a rarity forAfrican-American females?

    LJR: My parents. As far back as I can re-member, their commitment to making a posi-tive impact on the communities in whichthey lived and worked was equal only totheir commitment to helping my sisters,brother, and me achieve our dreams.

    KW: Tell me a little about what mentoringyoung black girls means to you?

    LJR: Throughout my career, I have benefit-ted from the experience and counsel of awide range of people who took a very per-sonal interest in me. As a result, I am alwayshappy to share lessons learned from my jour-ney with others. I am particularly passionate

    about mentoring young black girls. While weare a very diverse group, there is a specialbond that connects us to each other. When Iwork with them, I see them in me and I be-lieve they see me in them. By coming to-gether, we are able to show the world thepower and the promise of black girls.

    KW: Will part of your mission involve alsoencouraging your WNBA players to seethemselves as role models and to devotemore of their free time to mentoring?

    LJR: I don't have to encourage our playersto be positive role models, as that is some-thing that has always been important to themand something that they very willingly em-brace. Whether its through the WNBA Ca-res program or through their own initiatives,WNBA players give as much off the court asthey do on the court. They are committed tomaking a positive impact on the communi-ties in which they live and work, and they doit in very different ways: Tamika Catchingsand Swin Cash mentor young girls on self-esteem through their foundations; Tina

    Charles helped build a school in Africa withher personal donation; Ruth Riley travels theworld to bring attention to global diseases.The list goes on. I am very proud of all ourplayers as they truly are inspiring role mod-els for young girls and young boys.

    KW: How would you like the world to per-ceive the WNBA players participating in theOlympic Games this year?

    LJR: On a professional level, these athletesare quite simply 12 of the best female bas-ketball players in the world. On a personallevel, each one has an interesting and uniquestory to tell about her journey to the Olym-pics. Over the next two weeks and beyond-- I would like the world to get to know themas athletes, citizens of the world and fabu-

    lous women.

    KW: What other changes do you envisionimplementing during your tenure?

    LJR: We will continue to focus on atten-dance and income, as those are our keymeasures of bringing more and more peopleto the game and growing our fan base. Weare actively doing outreach to organizationsthat appreciate and value the WNBA in order

    to build an even more robust group of spon-sors and partners.

    KW: What do you hope will be your WNBAlegacy?

    LJR: I dont spend much time thinkingabout my legacy; my focus is on the legacyof the league and of the athletes who givetheir all on and off the court. We are, andwill continue to be, the destination for thebest womens basketball players in theworld. Every day we strive to provide our

    fans with an exciting and entertaining experi-ence.

    KW: Do you think there is a need to expandthe participation of African-American fe-males in the field of sports media?

    LJR: I would love to see more African-American females engaged in all aspects ofsports. All of the research tells us that par-ticipation in sports has a very positive impactin both the short and long term. Girls whoparticipate in sports have a higher self-esteem and are more likely to graduate fromcollege, and 80 percent of female executivesplayed team sports growing up.

    KW: What advice do you have for anyonewho wants to follow in your footsteps?

    LJR: Dream big and stay true to yourself asyou pursue your dreams.

    Individual Retirement Arrangement

    IRA DeductionIn 2011, the deduction for contribution

    to a traditional IRA is phased-out if thetaxpayer is an active participant in anemployer-sponsored retirement plan orthe spouse of an active participant. The

    phase-out begins when modified ad-justed gross income (MAGI) exceeds a

    specific amount and is reduced to zero ata maximum MAGI level.

    Roth IRA

    Regardless of your age, you may be ableto set up Roth IRA. You can't deductyour contributions, I if certain require-ments are met, earning will be tax-free.In 2011, the nondeductible contributiclimit for a Roth IRA is the smaller of thetaxpayer's earned income or $5,000($6,000 if : 50 or older).     Why Men should not

    trust their girlfriends

    Long ago, there was a hunter who livedwith his mother. 'This hunter killed no otheranimal but elephants. Every time he went outto hunt, he killed an elephant.

    So the elephants met and appointed one oftheir leaders to find out why this man wouldkill no other animal but elephants. The ele-phant was also to find out why the hunterwas never harmed. The elephant appointed tomeet the man changed into a beautiful girl.Once when the man was hunting, he saw this

    beautiful girl and fell in love with her. Shetold him that she was lost and couldn't findher way home; she would be glad if hewould let her go with him.

    The man took the girl home with him. Hetold his mother what had happened and shewas as jolly as could be. That night the girlpretended to love the boy very dearly. Whilerubbing his back she asked, 'Why do youonly kill elephants?' Now this man had asecret. He began to reveal this secret to hisgirlfriend.

    'When I shoot an elephant,' he said, '1 turninto a stump. When another elephant is shot Iturn into a bird. If another is shot I turn intograss and if still another is shot I turn into alizzard.'

    Just as he was about to tell the last secret,his mother called to him and said, 'Do not go

    any further because you don't know who thisgirl is.'The next day the girl took a bucket and

    pretended to go for water. However, straight-away she went to the elephants and told themall she had learnt. Three weeks later, the manwent out hunting. He shot one elephant andturned into a stump. The elephants chasedthe stump. He shot another elephant and

    changed to a bird. Still he was chased, andafter shooting an elephant, he turned into

    grass. They continued to chase him. Anotherelephant was shot and he turned to a lizard.The elephants decided to chase him until hewas caught. The hunter ran into a garden,shot an elephant and immediately turned toan egg-plant. The elephants had followed the

    lizzard who was the hunter, but they couldn'tfind him anywhere. They were so tired andangry that they turned on their leader. 'Youhave deceived us!' they shouted. The ele-phants killed the one that had been appoin-ted to find out the man's secret.

    When the hunter went home, he told hismother what had happened and promisedthat he would always obey her. Never wouldhe tell all of his secrets to a girl friend.

    In much of Africa, the traditions, customs, philoso-phy, and wisdom of the tribes are bound up infolklore. Theses stories, tales, often outrageous to apoint of disbelief, impact knowledge, morals, andfortitudes in difficult times.
