Dear Parishioners,
If you happen to see Bill Hewitt, please stop and give
him a big Thank You! He has ably served Zion as Jr.
Warden for 4 years. Bill begins his well-deserved
retirement from that position in November. His
dedication to our buildings and grounds is
commendable and we are so grateful.
Additionally, the vestry is pleased to announce Phil
McDonald has been unanimously elected as the new
Jr. Warden. We appreciate his willingness to step up
to this position. It is not an easy one, just ask Bill!
Yours in Christ,
Amy Salisbury
Senior Warden

Food theme: Polish
From the New York
Times bestselling author of The Widow
Clicquot comes an extraordinary and gripping
account of Irena Sendler—the “female Oskar
Schindler”—who took staggering risks to save
2,500 children from death and deportation in Nazi-
occupied Poland during World War II.
In 1942, one young social worker, Irena Sendler,
was granted access to the Warsaw ghetto as a
public health specialist. While there, she reached
out to the trapped Jewish families, going from
door to door and asking the parents to trust her
with their young children. She started smuggling
them out of the walled district, convincing her
friends and neighbors to hide them. Driven to
extreme measures and with the help of a network
of local tradesmen, ghetto residents, and her star-
crossed lover in the Jewish resistance, Irena
ultimately smuggled thousands of children past the
Nazis. She made dangerous trips through the city’s
sewers, hid children in coffins, snuck them under
overcoats at checkpoints, and slipped them

through secret passages in abandoned buildings.
But Irena did something even more astonishing at
immense personal risk: she kept secret lists buried
in bottles under an old apple tree in a friend’s back
garden. On them were the names and true
identities of those Jewish children, recorded with
the hope that their relatives could find them after
the war. She could not have known that more than
ninety percent of their families would perish.
In Irena’s Children, Tilar Mazzeo tells the
incredible story of this courageous and brave
woman who risked her life to save innocent
children from the Holocaust—a truly heroic tale of
survival, resilience, and redemption.

Give Thanks…Today, Thanksgiving has lost much,
if not all, of its religious significance. It was always
more than religious services, even the first one. The
first Thanksgiving was when pilgrims invited the
native Americans to share a meal with them, and it
ended up lasting for three days. Today it is mostly
just one meal with family and in some cases, friends.
Today I wish to write about our offering of
thanksgiving and praise to God, which we should do
all year long. The word “praise” is found in at least
166 verses in the King James Bible, the word
“rejoice” is found in at least 155 verses and the word
“thanks” 34 times.
Reflecting a little on Thanksgiving, I think about
where I’ve been, areas of growth and areas I hope to
improve in. Most importantly I try to spend a few
moments thanking God for all the blessings He has
poured out on my life.
I'm thankful for…
- The beautiful rainbow God blessed my friends and
I with the other day, reminding of Gods promise and
hope through the miracle of nature
- Life
- Forgiveness through Christ
- Family
- Friends near and far
- Hope for today and tomorrow
Don Moen wrote in the lyrics for “Give Thanks with
a Grateful Heart”
“And now let the weak say, I am strong. Let the poor
say, I am rich,
Because of what the Lord has done for us, Give
Thanks”!
Wishing all of you a wonderful year of
Thanksgiving!

STEWARDSHIP REMARKS TO
CONGREGATION-OCTOBER 23, 2016
Submitted by Ken Fanelli
In the 2017 Stewardship and pledge mailing that
you received the other week there was a letter from
our Senior Warden Amy Salisbury. The theme of the
letter and our stewardship campaign this cycle is
“Living Generously.” In the first paragraph, the letter
references Psalm 112 but just mentions its message
about generosity in general terms. With my curiosity
piqued, I looked it up. In part it reads:
“Good will comes to those who are
Generous and lend freely,
Who conduct their affairs with justice.
“Surely the righteous will never be
Shaken;
They will be remembered forever.
“They will have no fear of bad news;
Their hearts are steadfast, trusting in
The Lord.
“Their hearts are secure, they will have
No fear; ….
“They have scattered abroad their gifts to
the poor,
Their righteousness endures forever;
Their horn will be lifted high in honor.”
It’s interesting that 3,000 years after the writing
of the Psalms, some of these characteristics of and
intangible benefits from generous giving are just as
relevant today. The findings of a study conducted in
the last 10 years by researchers at the University of
Notre Dame say as much. This “Science of
Generosity Initiative” analyzed surveys completed
by nearly 2,000 Americans and interviews conducted
with 40 carefully selected households. Its authors,
Christian Smith and Hilary Davidson, wrote a book
published two years ago on their findings, the title of
which is The Paradox of Generosity: Giving We
Receive; Grasping We Lose. A couple of passages in
the book struck me. In the Introduction, the authors
write:
“By spending ourselves for others’ well-being we
enhance our own standing. In letting go of some of
what we own, we better secure our own lives. By
![Page 7: NOVEMBER - Zion Churchzionepiscopal.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/November...2016/11/11 · 5 Monthly Meal Ministry Saturday, November 26th Noon—2:00 p.m. Alger Social Center 215](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042120/5e99b0e0017c396baa56471a/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
7
giving ourselves away, we ourselves move toward
flourishing. This is not only a philosophical or
religious teaching; it is a sociological fact.”
Smith and Davidson go on to explain how
generosity is oddly paradoxical:
They write: “Generosity does not usually work in
simple, zero-sum, win-lose ways. The results of
generosity are often instead unexpected,
counterintuitive, win-win. … but more often and
importantly, generous people tend to receive back
goods that are even more valuable than those they
gave [such as] happiness, health, a sense of purpose
in life and personal growth.”
With Zion’s 200th anniversary behind us and the
prospect of soon having a new rector, this parish is
poised to begin a new era. Let’s make it a time when
all who enjoy the fruits of affiliation with this parish
make the commitment to give more generously of
our time, talents and treasure in the coming year…
and making a point to give regularly through your
annual pledge if you don’t do so already.
Please fill out your pledge cards by November
13th, which is Commitment Sunday.
(Please NOTE service change: We will have both
services – 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.)
