“PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES” “HARD WOMEN”

DANGEROUS MEN (2015)Playing from 11/13 – 11/15

Killers. Perverts. Bikers. DANGEROUS MEN.

In 1989, Iranian filmmaker John S. Rad moved to the U.S. to shoot his dream project, a rampaging gutter epic of crime, re-venge, cop sex and raw power. Just 26 years later, he completed an American action film masterpiece that the world is still barely ready for today: DANGEROUS MEN.

It’s a pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, brain-devouring on-slaught of ‘80s thunder, ‘90s lightning, and pure filmmaking daredevilry from another time and/or dimension. Blades flash, blood flows, bullets fly and synthesizers blare as the morgue overflows with the corpses of DANGEROUS MEN.

BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR OR HUMANITY (1973) 1947. Ex-soldier Shozo Hirono (Bunta Sugawara), after proving his ability with a gun, emerges from the teeming black markets of postwar Kure City into the professional world of the yakuza. Shozo makes his way from prison to boss in the newly-formed Yamamori family via gang feuds, assassinations and the shifting allegiances of his fellow mobsters, despite his own growing disil-lusionment with the men he is supposed to respect.

Based on the true account of a Hiroshima mob boss and supplemented by meticulous research by screenwriter Kazuo Kasahara. Like a head-spinning mixture of Martin Scorsese and Paul Greengrass, the film’s frenetic cinematography, colourful characters, and iconic score by Toshiaki Tsushima will leave you thrilled and exhausted, as you embark on one of the world’s greatest gangster film series.

FANTASIA (1940)FANTASIA, Disney’s groundbreaking masterpiece, consists of eight animated segments set to classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, with seven pieces performed by the Phila-delphia Orchestra. Music critic and composer Deems Taylor acts as the film’s Master of Ceremonies and introduces the audi-ence to each act in this imaginative and innovative film.

This 75th anniversary screening will feature special bonus con-tent, including a newly recorded behind-the-scenes look from the orchestra’s rehearsals and a discussion hosted by Yannik Nezet-Seguin on the history of Stokowski, FANTASIA, and the indelible imprint both left on the modern world symphonic world.

Every year Breckenridge Brewery and Never Summer Industries, two Colorado companies that take great pride in earnest crafts-manship, hail the coming of snowboard season with Opening Day celebrations across the U.S. Together the companies produce a very limited supply of “Artist Series” snowboards that pay tribute to the great outdoors, thrilling adventure, and quality of life. The boards are given away to lucky participants of Opening Day celebrations everywhere.

This year, the Alamo thrilled to participate in Opening Day with these free screenings! To reserve your seat, you can pur-chase a $5 voucher that can be redeemed for food & beverage or refunded at the box office.

One lucky guest at this screening will win a limited edition “Artist Series” snowboard!

DUMB AND DUMBER (1994)Harry and Lloyd are traveling cross country on a quest to return a briefcase to the woman Lloyd loves. Sure he’s only met her once, but she gave him that kind of old fashioned romantic feel-ing where he just knew he would do anything to bone her. Of course what these idiots don’t know is they accidentally picked up a ransom briefcase and are being pursued by trained killers.

THE SHINING (1980)Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece about the Torrance family, holed up for the winter as the caretakers of the Overlook Hotel, is intense, stunning, and downright scary! It’s full of now-classic horror film moments, but it never feels clichéd or outplayed; it’s the kind of horror movie that ages well. The terrifying imagery and sounds only becoming stronger as the years go by. This is vintage Jack from back when he was actually crazy, so grab a hold of something, sit back and get ready to be entranced and horrified by Kubrick’s THE SHINING.

22Vinegar Syndrome Presents:DEMONOID, MESSENGER OF DEATH

BATTLE ROYALE (2000)One of the most controversial Japanese films of the decade! In an extreme effort to restore order and curb the country’s pesky juvenile delinquent problem, the Japanese government passes an act which sanctions an annual death match. Every year an entire high school class is kidnapped, taken to a remote island, and given three days to kill each other -- leaving just one victor. Whether preppy, bully, nerd, friend or foe, it doesn’t matter; it’s a wrenching kill-or-be-killed situation. The result is, as expected, shocking and gory as hell.

But it’s the devilish satirical edge that makes BATTLE ROYALE such a unique, brutal and unforgettable experience. It’s a thrill-ing, expertly crafted epic featuring a icy, devious performance by the great Japanese actor Beat Takeshi as the military official who orchestrates this circus of carnage. Don’t miss your chance to see this new classic on the big screen!

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)There are superhero sequels and then there’s The Dark Knight. Arguably the finest sequel that doesn’t have the word “GOD-FATHER” in the title, the effects of this film on pop culture are being felt and will be felt for decades to come. Director Christopher Nolan took what could have been an easy cash grab of a follow up film and made one of the most thrillingly incred-ible and complex crime films cinema has ever seen. Pepper in an awe-inspiring, character-redefining and Academy Award-win-ning turn from Heath Ledger and you’ve got yourself a film for the ages. It’s high-time you brought yourself back to the theater to see this marvel of modern cinema on a silver screen.

Vinegar Syndrome Presents: DEMONOID MESSENGER OF DEATH (1981)Newly restored exploitation and horror obscurities for only five bucks!Evil monks! Severed demon hands! Satan erupting from a grave with a sword! What more do you need? Co-produced in Mexico and the United States, this is the most off-the-rails “killer hand” movie to ever crawl out of a haunted tomb. When Samantha Eggar vists Stuart Whitman at an archeologi-cal dig, they unknowingly unleash . . . Demonoid! Whoops! Naturally, Demonoid possesses the left hand of various humans and forces them to commit horrendous acts. The only way to get un-possessed is to severe those hands. But is that enough?! DEMONOID is a disco-infested fun-fest that features plenty of violence against hands, an appearance by Russ Meyer discovery Haji, and inserts directed by 1980s trash guru Jim Wynorski.

GHOST IN THE SHELL: THE NEW MOVIE (2015)Presented with English dubbing.Ghost in the Shell, one of the most iconic, sci-fi franchises of all-time, returns to the big screen with an action-packed, feature film that will blow audiences away - like the original film did over two decades ago.

When the Prime Minister of Japan is assassinated by a mysteri-ous cyborg, Major Motoko Kusanagi comes up as the prime suspect. It’s up to the agents of Public Security Section 9 to dis-cover the true nature of the murder, and clear Motoko’s name.

MONKO SEXO TRASHOMonko Sexo Trasho is a comedy and video show featuring Lux Alptraum (formerly of Fleshbot, now of The Wonderful World of Boning), Joe Garden (freelance writer and former features editor of The Onion), and video editor Robert Austin present-ing (respectively) sex ed videos, monkey movies, and fan-made trailers for terrible movies, and featuring guest comedians Mike Brown (NY Comedy Festival, Adult Swim, Tru TV) and Myka Fox (Distractify, Some eCards, Keith and the Girl).

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (1987)PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES is a 1987 American comedy film written, produced and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung market-ing executive, who meets Del Griffith, played by John Candy, an eternally optimistic, outgoing, overly talkative, and clumsy shower curtain ring salesman who seems to live in a world gov-erned by a different set of rules. They share a three-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal home to Chicago from New York City in time for Thanksgiving dinner with his family.

RAISING ARIZONA (1987)To this day, this frantic screwball comedy remains one of the most re-watchable films there is. RAISING ARIZONA was the very first film legally shown at the Alamo Drafthouse back in 1997 in downtown Austin and it is always a treat to see it back on the Drafthouse silver screen!

When a childless couple consisting of an ex-con (Nicolas Cage) and an ex-cop (Holly Hunter) decide to help themselves to one of another family’s quintupelets, their lives spiral into chaos and disaster. Combining influences from Tex Avery cartoons to Sam Raimi horror movies to 1940s B-movies, Joel and Ethan Coen’s first comedic masterpiece is one of the most purely entertain-ing, hilarious and quotable movies of all time. Starting from a point of delirious excess, the film leaps into dark and virtually uncharted territory to soar like a comet. RAISING ARIZONA is a perfect pleasure.

V FOR VENDETTA (2005)“Remember, remember, the fifth of November...”

V FOR VENDETTA combines larger than life action with a real, timely political message. Written by the Wachowskis and directed by James McTeigue, the second unit director of the MATRIX trilogy, V FOR VENDETTA adapts Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s groundbreaking comic book series of the same name.

Evey (Natalie Portman) is a production assistant living in a post-slightly-less-than-apocalyptic world in which the British government has installed totalitarian rule over its people. After being attacked and nearly raped by government officials, Evey is saved by V (Hugo Weaving), a theatrically garbed terrorist. And V is a terrorist, let us not forget. He uses bombings and murder to sell his message to a complacent society of couch potatoes.

Girlie Night: BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY (2001)Bridget Jones is, in the words of Chaka Khan, every woman. She’s smart but baffled by men; she’s pretty but always con-cerned about her weight; she’s hilarious but often unintention-ally so. She sings terrible karaoke, wears inappropriate costumes to fancy dress parties and drinks far too much. In short, she is a modern day hero, and at Girlie Night, we’ll celebrate her, just as she is. Leave your genuinely tiny knickers at home and let it all hang out as we cheer on Bridget, tell off Daniel Cleaver and swoon over Mark Darcy, a man so handsome, he can even pull off a reindeer sweater. No need to prepare any notes on the situ-ation in Chechnya, but come ready to hug your wine bottle and sing along to “All By Myself.”

Mondo X Chiller: FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980, 35mm)We’ll be giving away a Mondo FRIDAY THE 13TH knit sweater to one lucky winner at this screening!Terror and suspense abound in this 24-hour nightmare of blood! Camp Crystal Lake has been shuttered for over 20 years due to several vicious and unsolved murders. The camp’s new owner and seven young counselors are readying the property for re-opening despite warnings of a “death curse” by local resi-dents. The curse proves true on FRIDAY THE 13TH as one by one each of the counselors is stalked by a violent killer. Watch as Kevin Bacon and a cast of pretty young coeds fall victim to a barrage of knives and arrows!

Prints of Darkness: FROM BEYOND (1986, 35mm)Introduced by Fangoria’s editor-in-chief Michael Gingold. With RE-ANIMATOR standing head and shoulders above the horror competition in 1985, director Stuart Gordon plunged back into the world of H.P. Lovecraft and came up with this film the following year. Reuniting with screenwriter Dennis Paoli and stars Barbara Crampton and Jeffrey Combs, director Stuart Gordon spun a thematically ambitious tale that begins with Dr. Edward Pretorious succeeding all too well at glimpsing an alternate, monster-filled dimension via a device called the Resonator. When a scientist accompanies Pretorius’ assistant and a detective back to the scientist’s mansion, the machine is turned back on and all manner of creaturiffic, sexual hell breaks loose. Awash in vibrantly colored lighting, slime and blood, this film is an exploration of the dark side of ambition and desire.

Temple of Schlock: HARD WOMEN (1970, 35mm)Introduced by Fangoria’s editor-in-chief Michael Gingold. While investigating the murder of a transvestite, Inspector Perrak (Horst Tappert) of the Hamburg vice squad discovers that a kinky criminal enterprise that has been blackmailing political figures is now the target of a serial killer. Originally, this German thriller was passed off on U.S. audiences as both a FRENCH CONNECTION cash-in and as a softcore S&M skin pic, but fans know director Alfred Vohrer from his numer-ous Edgar Wallace and Karl May adaptations. Vohrer brings with him a quaint sensibility that is constantly at odds with the lurid subject matter, probably best exemplified during a scene in which a sadistic gangster ends a phone call with, “And no monkey business!”

Victory Screening: PAPER MOON (1973)Alamo Victory members are invited to this FREE screening! To sign up for Victory, visit drafthouse.com/victory.To reserve tickets, you must be logged into your Victory account!

This month’s free screening is the Peter Bogdanovich classic, pairing real life father-daughter duo Ryan and Tatum O’Neal as a pair of con artists in a charming and hilarious road movie.

Monday Night Thread-Up: RIVER’S EDGE (1986, 35mm)By 1987, with the 1980s more than half over, the teen movie had become dependent on convention. Even the idea (or ideal) of “the outsider” character had become passé, with John Hughes commandeering it. RIVER’S EDGE plays out like an anti-John Hughes movie. It revels in a lo-fi punk grime that suits its subjects perfectly. Its subjects being a shabby, low key Keanu Reeves; a nearly constantly howling, manic Crispin Glover; and Dennis Hopper as a paranoid, one legged drug dealer with a blow up doll girlfriend. The result is a strange and inspired mix of youth angst and the confusion and chaos of the aftermath of a crime. And it features a lot of Slayer on the soundtrack.

Video Vortex: SANTO AND THE BLUE DEMON (1970)VHS-only insanity for only $1!Over the course of three decades, Mexican wrestling sensa-tion El Santo starred in fifty-bazillion movies. But only one of those movies finds Santo and his pal, Blue Demon, caught in a bloodthirsty death-battle with Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Vampire Woman, a little person hunchback named Waldo, and an unidentified creature who looks like a tree with cauliflower for a head. And this is it!! SANTO AND BLUE DEMON VS. THE MONSTERS is non-stop sensory overload. It falls somewhere between a WWF Royal Rumble and a surf-goth dance party in a graveyard at midnight. Frankenstein’s monster drives a Mercedes! The Creature From The Black Lagoon is also a cyclops! Santo eats dinner, reads a newspaper, and makes out with people -- all with his mask on! If life gets better than this, we don’t want to know about it.

Staff Picks: TWELVE MONKEYS (1995)Staff Pick of Louis!Bruce Willis stars in Terry Gilliam’s sci fi puzzle as a man sent back in time to try to figure out the cause of a plague that sent most of the human population underground. Released in 1995, the film is loosely based on Chris Marker’s 1962 short film LA JATEE, although Gilliam radically fleshes out this tale of time travel, apocalyptic pandemics, and madness with the help of Willis and Brad Pitt.
