1 November 2016 Newsletter From the Desk of the Principal The first quarter of the year is now in our rear view mirror and we reach a stretch in November where the number of our activities seems to slow down a bit. Our fall activities teams have either completed their seasons or are looking forward to district and state competition. Congratulations go out to our qualifiers for qualifying for the State Cross Country Meet. Our football team is enjoying and excellent season and is headed for the state playoffs, so congratulations to the team and football coaches. Our Viking volleyball team is having another great season and will be stretching their season into the post-season with wins in their tournaments. Many hours of practice and competition were devoted to their successful seasons. The Viking Marching Band has done very well this year with their Excellent ratings in marching and field competitions. They also provide a great deal of spirit and pride to our games and pep rallies. We want to thank parents for their fantastic support of all of our programs. The Northwest Speech, One Act, and Mock Trial teams are diligently preparing for their seasons. We are extremely proud of the efforts of all of our students in all activities. The coaches and sponsors of these activities devote a great deal of time and effort to making our teams successful. We are proud of all of you and your achievements. The time commitment and dedication needed to have successful activities is forever increasing on the part of students, coaches/directors, and parents. Know that your efforts are acknowledged and appreciated. A great deal of research has been conducted about the success of students in school and its correlation to participation in activities. This research indicates that students who are involved in activities generally do better academically than students not involved in activities. It takes teamwork to make education a success and the support that we receive from our parents, students, teachers, and community is essential if the process is to work well. We urge all parents to stay active and involved with the education of their students. Ask questions of your students when something appears to be wrong or out of character. Consult with teachers, counselors, and administration if there are issues that may be difficult to solve on your own. We are here to support your efforts with your children. Meeting With The Principal We will be forming a student advisory council and a parent advisory council in the near future. The purpose of the advisory councils is to provide feedback to the administration regarding the educational program at Northwest High School. The student advisory council will meet with the administration 2 times per semester and the parent advisory council will meet with administration one time per semester. Both the student advisory council and parent advisory council will have 2 representatives per grade level. We are always looking for input on how we can make the education of our students more productive and rewarding. Tim Krupicka, Principal Northwest High School

Seniors Seniors planning to take a class with Central Community College (CCC) in the SPRING semester will register on Nov. 18. Students must pick up a packet of forms from the counseling office. Parents should review the information with their student and sign appropriate forms. Packets must be returned to the counseling office by Wednesday, Nov. 9th.  Juniors Juniors planning to take a CCC class in their SENIOR year need to remember that CCC has testing qualifications that are required BEFORE you are allowed to register for classes. Two options are available for qualifications: ACT or the new ACCUPLACER. If you choose to take the ACT, take the December test (registration deadline is Nov. 4 th). A minimum score may be required depending on the class you want to take. If you don’t meet the minimum score you may take the ACCUPLACER at Northwest or CCC.    Scholarship and ACT Seniors should take the DECEMBER 10th ACT test to get scores back in time for deadlines (the ACT REGISTRATION deadline is NOVEMBER 4th). Beware of scholarship scams and remember that you should never have to pay to submit a scholarship application.  FAFSA The FAFSA website opened on October 1st this year. Parents and seniors should be completing this as soon as possible as federal funds are first come, first served. College Sports Juniors and Seniors planning to compete in a college sport must register with either the NCAA or the NAIA. Students must take the ACT to be eligible. Both

clearinghouses require ACT scores come directly from the ACT center . Students must enter the eligibility center as one of their 4 college choices on their ACT registration to avoid paying a fee to send scores later. The NCAA code is 9999 and the NAIA code is 9876. Both eligibility centers charge a registration fee but fee waivers are available for students on the free or reduced lunch program. Contact your counselors to have them submit the required documentation. This must be done before you submit your application. Students planning to compete at the Division I, II or III levels can visit the NCAA website at www.ncaa.org to apply, the registration fee is $65. Students planning to attend Bellevue University, Concordia University, Doane University, Hastings College, Midland University, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Peru State College, College of St. Mary or York College need to register at www.PlayNAIA.org. The registration fee is NOW $80. Check with out-of state college choices for the eligibility center you should register with.
