The Stone Ridge 5K Cup is awarded to the school with the highest percent of 5K/1K participants running for the school, relative to its

student population. Aldie Elementary is the winner of the 2012 Stone Ridge 5K Cup. Participants specifying Aldie ES as their

school represented over 57% of Aldie’s school population. Congratulations, Aldie Elementary School!

Distribution of Race Proceeds

There were 1589 5K/1K registered participants. Of these, 1491 supported a school, and 98 participants did not specify a school to

support. Proceeds from race participants who specified a school when registering for the race will be distributed to each school in

proportion to the schools' registrations. All other race proceeds (e.g., from participants who did not support a specific school) will be

divided equally among the schools. Each school will receive a percentage of these race proceeds equal to the percentage of all race

participants who ran in support of their school. The breakdown of proceeds / participants for each school is as follows:

School Number of

Participants

Percentage of Proceeds from Runners who Supported a School to be Given to Each School

(i.e., Percentage of Participants from Each School)

Aldie 70 4.7%

Arcola 183 12.3%

The club currently has two teams, and one of the teams (Lunsford Gurus) participated in a regional competition this past weekend at Eagle Ridge Middle School. They won a 1st Place Robot Design award which is really thrilling since they are a rookie team, but is a great achievement for them, representing Lunsford MS. PTA Meetings

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend JML PTA meetings when you can. We know

everyone is very busy, but if you can attend at least twice a year, it will help you feel more

connected to your child’s school and it will allow our PTA to function with greater efficiency.

The purpose of our general membership meetings is to inform our members about school and

PTA topics, to connect with our school community members, and to carry out JML PTA

business that requires general membership action. Your involvement in our meetings will

help your PTA board work with efficiency.

Everyone is welcome to attend our PTA meetings. Only JML PTA members may vote and

participate in the official business of the JML PTA. If you have an item you would like to

have addressed at a meeting, contact Lesli McGrath at [email protected] for

consideration.

NEWS FROM THE LCPS SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

SEAC MONTHLY MEETINGS.

October Meeting. The panel presentation at the October meeting was “Inclusive Schools: How to Support, Develop, and

Maintain Peer Mentor Programs” with Cedar Lane Elementary School, Eagle Ridge Middle School, and Heritage High School.

Cedar Lane Elementary gave an overview of their peer mentor program. The focus of their program is awareness,

tolerance and acceptance of students with differences in the school. They pair up students with and without disabilities

and develop activities during and after school in which they can interact. Their goal is to make every child feel accepted

in the school community.

Eagle Ridge Middle School is servicing needs coming from the elementary level and going to the high school level.

They have formal and informal supports for these students. Eagle Ridge shared that a focus of theirs is to sustain

friendships that are developed in elementary school to help with the transition (Bridge to the Ridge). Scheduling is often

the result of this as the school tries to put students of need into the same classes or teams with peers. Another support is

for the 8th

grade peer tutors to spend time with the 6th

grade to provide academic assistance.

Heritage High School shared that each school’s program looks different according to the individual needs of the

building. Heritage builds their peer programs on the core value of inclusion. The school embraces inclusion as a natural

part of the day. The peer program is the foundation in which other peer supports stem. Students are selected to

participate based on recommendations from teachers, counselors, and student interest. Lunch Bunch is another peer

support at the school where conversation, game playing, and various other activities take place.

November Meeting. The next monthly SEAC meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, in Room 102 of the LCPS

Administration Building. The presentation will be, “Autism Spectrum Disorders in Our School District: Prevalence, Projected

Growth, and the Role of the Autism Specialist” from the LCPS Autism Specialist, Kathie Burns. Join us.

STAY INFORMED: LCPS FY2014 BUDGET.

Everyone is encouraged to pay close attention to the budget process. The Board of Supervisors has directed it’s staff to establish

the fiscal year 2014 county budget based on a three cent tax rate reduction for the school budget and also an equalized tax cut for

the county side. If this is adopted, a three cent tax rate reduction translates to a $68 million reduction in the current LCPS budget.

Follow the local papers at www.leesburgtoday.com and www.loudountimes.com to stay up to date on the Loudoun County Board

of Supervisors budget process and the LCPS budget process. You can also follow the LCPS budget process at www.lcps.org.

LUNSFORD SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT COFFEES * Date Change *

The next Special Education Parent Coffee will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012, from 9 am to 11 am in the J. Michael

Lunsford Middle School Media Center. Assistive Technology will be the featured topic. To learn more about LCPS assistive

technology services, visit www.lcps.org/page/1649. (This program was originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 14.

Please note the calendar change and join us on Thursday, November 15 for the parent coffee.)

LCPS PARENT RESOURCE CENTER

The Loudoun County Public Schools Parent Resource Center (PRC) is a place where parents and professionals can come to learn

about a variety of disabling conditions, the special education process, and resources available to special needs students and their

families or families whose children are experiencing difficulties in school, home or the community. Learn more about the Parent

Resource Center and their valuable workshops at www.lcps.org/prc. While visiting the PRC website, register for their KEEP IN

TOUCH program, so that you are notified of special events and announcements.
