In about three – fourmonths the procedure of issuingstudent visa to US will becleared and by February nextonwards a new onlineapplication processing will bedevised to hasten the procedure.
This assurance was givenby US Consul, Mr. LeonGendin of the US ConsulateGeneral, Chennai at a meetinggot-up by Bhavan’s AmericanCorner on November 30, 2009.
Exchanging views on thesubject with students andparents, Mr Gendin said thatgetting a student visa shouldnot be a “nightmarishexperience”. He said “only twothings concern the US – your

bonafides and finance. The restis peripheral.”
Mr. Gendin reassured thatgetting a student visa was not asdifficult as it was made out tobe. What was crucial is thestudents’ intention and one –year financial support.“The source of his sponsorshipis as vital”, he added.
Mr. Gendin clarified thatone might apply more than onceand each applications would beconsidered afresh. But thequestions which had not beensatisfactorily answered in theearlier applications would becross checked. “We really donot rely too much ondocuments . We depend onstudents’ intentions. TheConsulate must be convincedthat what is stated in yourapplication form is truth,” hesaid.
However, a studentintending to study in a USuniversity had better researchthe area of his study well before

the interview, he advised. He added “if the number ofIndian students seekingAmerican education isincreasing, American studentsopting for Chinese and Indianeducation too are growing.Earlier, American students wereenamored with studying inEuropean or UK universities. But now they are heading toAsia and mostly to China andIndia for business andmanagement studies,” he said.
He pointed out thatstudents may, after completingthe first year, finance mayaugment their by working parttime. “It’s only tourists who areforbidden from working in theUS,” he said. When askedabout the criterion of the USConsulate to decide whether astudent is a promising one ormediocre, he said, “We don’treally seek to know that. Butthe university that accepted himor her will review to an extentthe promising character of astudent.”
Mr. Gendin refuted reportsthat the American Consulateis tough on students of a certaincommunity from India.“Nothing of the sort. Everyapplicant is personally dealtwith, not communally,” he said.Responding to queries, he saidthat there was no difference indealing with students seekingtechnical or scientific orhumanities studies.
CORRIGENDUMReference the report on
the function where “Anjali”, amonograph on BangaloreNagarathnamma (Dec, 2009)was released. By an oversightthe location where the savanthad gone a whole hog inhelping create a memorial toSaint Thyagaraja, has slippedThough it is well-known thatthe location is Tiruvayyars inTanjaore district of TamilNadu, its mention is wellworth repeating. The omissionis regretted.
