Service Projects(Ms. Svitlana Tulchynska)

Health Science 20 is a new course which challenges students to look at the health science field from holistic and analytical perspectives. During classroom discussions, students identified emotional and spiritual well-being as one of the most important parts of the personal health. That discussion lead to the idea of a service project: baking pies and delivering them to Elders before Thanksgiving as a way to show them our gratitude and respect.

The project was completed on Thursday, October 9. Students baked twenty-five blueberry pies and made home deliveries on the same day. Our gratitude goes to

Lorraine Bear and Roseanne Bear for helping us make our project a success.

From the students:

“Our service project was fun. Seeing all the Elders face expressions when we brought them pie was AWESOME. I felt really happy after that. I wouldn’t mind doing it again.”

“My experience of baking the pies and delivering them to Elders made me feel good about myself, especially seeing how happy and thankful the Elders were for receiving a pie. It was the best thing that I’ve done so far this month. When I went into my grandmother’s, she had no idea what we were saying and before we got a picture she said, “Aw, I didn’t even get to brush my hair” and she thanked us with the biggest smile.”

“It was awesome, well good, because our visit just made them have the Biggest Smile ever”.

“I had a great time making pies for Elders. It felt good to do a nice thing and it was fun. What surprised me the most was how happy Elders were when they got their pie.”

“I really enjoyed making pies for Elders. I think people should do this more often. Just to make their day.”

“My service project made me feel happy and good! The Elders were really happy and very surprised receiving the pies. Maryann Morin was so happy she gave me and another classmate a key chain she made. Doing this project our class has done will go a long way.”

Participating students were:

Rudy Caribou, Brandi Morin, Shania McCallum, Olivia Merasty, Jasmine Merasty, Anissa Merasty, Cassidy Ray, Shynia Skevington, Gina Natewaeys, Jayde Spencer, Nikkysha Daniels.

What did the elders say about it?

“Very happy the kids did this. The old man ate it all!”

(Mrs. Paul Morin)

“Very nice of them! First time ever to receive a blueberry pie. Said a prayer for

them. It was a good deed.” (Francis Caribou)

“Good idea for the Elders. More of this! (Lazar Morin)

“It was good. I loved it. Made my day! So happy because I never

ate pie in a long time.”(Maria Natewayes)

Grade 2B Fall Kindness Project(Ms. Julia Palmer)

For our first Kindness Project of the year, the students in Grade 2B decided that they would like to make some decorations for the community Thanksgiving Feast

hosted by the CRC. The students made four fall-themed crafts. On Monday they made some 3D pumpkins using construction paper. This activity was fun, and required some patience. On Tuesday they made leaf wreaths using pastels. The students learned how to use their fingers to blend the colours together. On Wednesday, they made pinecone turkeys using some round pinecones from Ontario. On Thursday the students made thankful turkeys, and wrote one thing they were thankful for on each turkey feather. On Friday, we delivered the crafts to the CRC. The students believed it would make the

Guided Reading(Chuck Farwell, RoseAnne Bear, Nicole Pigeau)

What does Guided Reading look like in the classroom?

During Guided Reading, most classes of the same grade level will be combined into leveled groups. For example, you may have four students from 2A and two students from 2B in a guided reading group. The students in their groups work in quiet areas away from the other GR groups. Each of these groups works with a teacher, EA, or an LNC.

What will the students who are not yet ready for reading be doing?

Students in the early

grades that are not, yet, ready for GR will work on oral language and phonemic awareness.

Guided Reading Achievement Awards were presented to these students on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in the HTCS Gym:

What is Guided Reading?

Guided Reading is a small group of students who are working at the same reading level. Guided Reading groups have no more than six students in the group. Leveled books are slightly above a student’s reading level and require help from the teacher to successfully finish the book. Guided Reading challenges students in their teacher-supported reading group.

Cultural Exchange or “Hollywood Here We Come!”(Ms. Shannon Orr)

The first two months of school have gone by quickly and the Grade 7B class has been busy. Our class took part in the Cultural Exchange program earlier in October. We worked with a visiting artist to create a video about Sandy Bay. The

video was made in three parts. The first part was pre-production. We learned about the different types of shots that are used in a video production. Everyone had to decide what type of shot they wanted as well as what they would be doing in the video. The second part was a very busy production day. Some students created signs to hold up in the video, others wrote down what they wanted to say. Then it was time to shoot the video. We had volleyball players showing off their skills, dancers, and people drawing as well as students holding up their signs and talking. Sometimes it took a few takes to get everything just right. Finally, we did post-production. First, we watched all the footage that was shot and decided what we wanted to keep and what should be taken out. We also came up with ideas for songs to be part of the soundtrack. The visiting artist put everything together on the video, and then we were able to watch the (almost) finished product.

From over twenty minutes of footage, we wound up with a video that was about four minutes long. The last thing we did was to film a bit more video to add in and check that everyone had their names on the credits. We are still waiting to get the final version of our video and are looking forward to sharing it with friends and family.

Our Class Pet(Ms. Hilary Patey)

A few weeks ago, we decided as a class that we would like to have our very own

class pet. We talked a lot about what we would like to have and we decided on one Beta fish. Beta are found in the shallow waters of rice paddies in Thailand, but are usually brown. The Beta that we have are blue and red because they have

been bred like that. Beta are also called Chinese Fighting Fish. You should not put two male Betas in the same tank because they will fight each other. When Ms. Patey went away for convention she surprised the class with two Betas. The fish can sense each other in the tank. The red beta tries to get around the divider to fight the blue fish. When he does this his fins get really big. The blue

Beta likes to hang out with the dolphins in his tank. They live in a special tank which divides it in half so they both can live together. We would like to introduce you to our class pets:

Islanders Sink T-Wolves’ Season(Mr. Daniel Carrie ̀re)

The T-Wolves football season came to an end on Tuesday October 21st after a close fought battle against the Cumberland House Islanders to a final score of 34-23. The T-wolves fought hard in the second half to almost erase the deficit and take

back the lead but unfortunately time was not on their side. The T-Wolves finished off the season with a 1-3 record and finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference. The Eastern and Western Finals are to take place on Monday, October 27th with Cumberland House visiting Creighton in the East and on the west side Green Lake visits Pinehouse. The finals will take place on November 1st in Prince Albert. A big thank you to all the coaches and volunteers who helped out this season and especially to all the football players who grew as a team and worked together!

Movember

Movember is a world-wide campaign to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

The following is taken from the Movember website

at ca.movember.com

“Funds are raised through the Foundation’s annual awareness campaign, Movember, which sees the sprouting of millions of moustaches

around the world, during the month previously known as November.

At the start of Movember, guys take action by signing up with a clean-shaven face and for the 30 days of November commit to growing a moustache. These selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Mo Bros are supported by the women in their lives, affectionately known as, Mo Sistas - together, our Mo Community raise money and awareness to change the face of men’s health.

With the sprouting of a new moustache, Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the month, and like a run or walk for charity they use their hairy ribbon to spark conversations around the often ignored issue of men’s health and seek funds to support the work of the Movember Foundation.

At the end of the month, the Movember community celebrates their Mo growing efforts, either by joining us at one of the official Movember Gala Partés, held around the world. Or, by hosting their own end of month event with colleagues, friends or community groups.”

To help raise money for Movember, some of the staff members of HTCS are growing a moustache. Mr. Powers is offering people the chance to vote for the type of moustache they would like challenge him to grow. You can vote as often as you like Each vote costs $1.00

Grade 1A News(Ms. Zinck)

Ms. Zinck's class has been talking a lot about the environment. Recently there have been discussions about litter and how people don't use garbage cans. As a class, we decided to help out our school and community by going outdoors and picking up trash. We were only out a short time and gathered lots of garbage. Mrs. Zinck's class would like to remind everyone to respect our environment and please don't litter.

Succeeding in Trades(Mr. Rob Shukin)

On Friday, October 3, our welding class had a visit from a former student, Gilbert (Rico) Bedard. Rico is currently working at Fort McMurray as a welder and millwright. He began by talking to the class about how he got into the trades, how long it took to get accepted from a waiting list, what he did to earn a living while he was on the waiting list, how long it took to get his welding trade and, finally earning his millwright certification. He said that until he got started, he didn’t realize how many trades and subdivisions of trades there were.

Rico said that you don’t have to be the best welder in the world to be successful. He said that employers are looking for

people who are very good at what they do, who take pride in doing a good job, who persevere through delays or other problems without complaining, and finally, people who get the job done. They want their employees to be on time and at the job on the days

they need them. He said that

in his line of

work, it takes teamwork and everyone needs to do their part when needed.

He has worked for a number of employers, moving to places and employers he wanted to try out. He advised students that when they have a job and want to move elsewhere, to make sure that they leave their employers on good terms. A person develops a reputation for his work, attitude, and skill. This is very useful in getting the jobs that you want.

Rico’s advice to students, if they are interested in the trades, is to get in as fast as they can. For example, get a job as a labourer at a welding shop, be there on time every day, do what you are told and be good at your job. Keep talking with your employer about the possibility of getting into an apprenticeship program.

Rico said that things change as you’re growing up. When he was in school in Sandy Bay, he couldn’t wait to get out of

this town. Now, he can’t wait to come home for a visit. Rico

advised

Rico is proud of his achievements and enjoys providing a good life for him and his family at Lloydminster.

Tasty Little Critters (Ms. Bridget Langdon)

Our English Language Arts class got to talking about the different types of food people eat and the effect our food on the environment. Students were both fascinated

and somewhat creeped-out to learn that some people eat insects. I invited them to give it a try. Here are their reactions!

Glennie Dorion:

“The insect I ate was a scorpion. The insect I ate actually tasted good to be

honest and after I was done eating it I could literally still taste it in my mouth. When I was eating the insect, I was excited to eat it. We are eating

bugs in our class because they’re healthy for us. They give us vitamins, minerals and other things too.”

John McDonald:

“I ate a cricket and a pupae. The cricket tasted a bit dry and had a hint of peanut butter haha. The after-taste tasted like coffee.”

How did you feel about eating them?

“Nothing…I felt a bit hungry again haha so I ate em. (yah he ate a lot of them)

Why is the class eating insects?

“Our teacher wants us to do something new, to see how good they are. Insects are actually healthier than the food we eat at restaurants like McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King etc…”

Leanne Morin:

The white chocolate coated superworm “tasted like Hershey’s and Oreo bar but crunchy like popcorn. It was good, a lot of flava, flave. I wasn’t scared because other

humans ate it.” About the chocolate covered silkworm pupae: “Well at first I thought it was peanuts in the middle, and then I got this taste of deep fried potatoes and then I spit it out cause they told me it was a bug and the gross potato taste. I was like ‘ew’. Didn’t like the taste of it.”

Jurnee McDonald:

“The insect I ate was a cricket. It tasted like a chocolate covered coffee bean. It was alright. I felt really excited and grossed out because I never ate a bug before and I don’t eat bugs at all!” (not that she knew of)

Levi Morin:

“The insect I ate was a scorpion covered in chocolate and it tasted like a sour candy but not really sour. The other insect I ate was a silkworm pupae and it tasted like a potato with toe jam in it.

When I was ready to eat the insect, I was nervous and scared because I thought I was going to get sick. (but he didn’t) The reason we are eating bugs in our class is because we’re learning about

how much healthy stuff like: protein, vitamins and calcium are in bugs and that it doesn’t affect our world like animals do.”

Nina Bird:

“I ate the silkworm pupae. The insect I ate tasted like the seed inside of a seed shell. It was soft on the outer part of the chocolate then it was crunchy from the bug. I felt nervous at first, then I got excited. After that I just felt grossed out. We are eating insects in class because insects have more protein, minerals and nutrition and also because we waste food when it comes to animals.”

Grade 2B Writing Exchange(Ms. Julia Palmer)

The students in Grade 2B are participating in an exciting program in

which they will try their hands at illustrating stories. Our class

connected with students in a Native Studies high school class from Athens Ontario last week. Using Skype, the students introduced themselves and told the high school students some things that they were interested in. The students from Athens will be writing stories for the children based on their interests. The Grade 2s will then be drawing the pictures for the stories. This will create some books that can be shared with the school and the community. We are excited to read the stories that the students from Ontario create. The students are looking forward to doing the illustrations. Stay tuned to the Howler to see the final project!
