Isaiah 2
This week: First Sunday of Advent Isaiah 2:1-5 Romans 13:11-14 Matthew 24:37-44
Background: The soaring prophecy of Isaiah dreams of a day when all the nations come together to hear the Lord’s instruction and to walk in the ways of the Lord. On that day wars will end and the resources of warfare will be turned to producing food for the hungry. No
one will ever train for war again. This has been the prophetic dream for people of faith for nearly 4000 years. Is it ever to
come true? Will humanity ever “walk in the light of the Lord”?
Next Week: Second Sunday of Advent Isaiah 11:1-10 Romans 15:4-9 Matthew 3:1-12
THE SEASON OF ADVENT Next Sunday we begin the four-week period of expectation and waiting for the Feast of Christmas. During these weeks we pray
and prepare for the Lord’s coming into our hearts and world. As we prepare, it is probably important to watch that all the secular
focus on early celebrations of Christmas do not completely obliterate Advent’s waiting. The church has learned over the
centuries that having a time to quietly reflect, to ready one’s heart, to even ready the “home and hearth” will issue forth in a richer celebration of the Lord’s birth. Our secular society, however, is interested in sales before December 25, and wants us to “deck
the hall” and get all our celebrations over by that date so the “after Christmas sales” can promptly begin on December 26.
We Christians cannot avoid the secularization and commercialization of our feast of Christmas nor can we avoid being swept up in it to some
degree. However, we can still make space and time in our live to keep Advent, to have some quiet, candle-lite moments for peaceful reflection.
Read some of the stunning Old Testament prophecies of this season and let their words roll around your heart. Don’t let these four weeks of purple and pink get pushed aside too soon by glitter and tinsel. Ask yourself what your heart’s deepest desire is and pray about it this Advent.
COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF RECONCILIATION The Weirton Catholic Community will gather to celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliation on
Monday. December 12, at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph the Worker Church. We will hear the Word of God, pray our common contrition and then be
given the opportunity for individual confession should we wish. Priests from the various parishes will participate so there will be ample opportunity to
confess and the liturgy should not take too long.
Adult Bible Study
is held every Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the conference room.
