Poet John O’Donohue offers us a grace to be said after a meal. We usually ask God to bless the good food we are about to consume – but we rarely stop to thank God for the food that we have eaten, the fellowship we have enjoyed around the table, and the time and rest the meal offers us. He prays:

“We end this meal with grace For the joy and nourishment of food, The slowed time away from the world

To come into presence with each other And sense the subtle lives behind our faces,

The different colors of our voices, The edges of hungers we keep private,

The circle of love that unites us. We pray the wise spirit who keeps us

To change the structures that make others hunger And that after such grace we might now go forth

And impart dignity wherever we partake.”

November is a month that we can sense “the slowed time away from the world.” Falling leaves, gentle days and a renewed focus on thanksgiving and gratitude help us to reflect on the past year much as this grace reflects on the past meal. November is a good month to reflect on the wonder of our past year, the circle of love which has kept us and the grace of God who has pulled us through. November is a time to reflect on our lives and how we might better “impart dignity” wherever we go.

It’s also a month to reflect on our ministry and mission at Sunrise in 2018. This year we’ve con-tinued to open ourselves to new possibilities in our congregational life. 2018 was full of good gifts from God: God’s Kids and Youth Fellowship are strong and vital, Sunrise and First Presbyterian hosted Heartland Traveling Day Camp for 56 children, CASTLE served many children, our adult Sunday School classes are full and exciting, our building is often used by community groups, we’ve hosted a coat drive for the third year, we’ve offered our hands-on help to Ashby House, Habitat for Humanity, the USDA Food Commodities program and other agencies in Salina. We pray that God will help us share and care. God answers that prayer with plenty of opportunities for our sharing and caring.

November is a good month to offer a grace for the year we have had. Good and wonderful things have happened to us and others through the work of our hands this year. One way we can offer gratitude and thanksgiving to God is through our giving through the 2019 pledge campaign. If everyone were able to increase their pledge offering by just 1% we would have ample funds for God’s ministry at Sunrise. I know many of us live on a fixed income. I also know that many of us have higher costs of living. My costs have increased. But, I’ve just figured a per centage increase for my pledge. I hope we can offer God just a little bit more – because we have been part of God’s ministry at Sunrise that has given us and others an overflowing grace.

Love,

Martha

THANKSGIVING DINNER!

KS (Sunrise)

The Mission Committee will again be sponsoring the Annual Sunrise Thanksgiving Dinner November 18th, the Sunday before Thanksgiving at

11:45 am. A sign-up sheet has been posted on the bulletin board outside the MPR Room so we don’t have too many vegetables or dinner rolls, although we could never have too many desserts! This dinner is especially for anyone who will not be having a traditional Thanksgiving

dinner, so if you know someone who is not,

please invite them to the dinner.

Sunday,

11:45 a.m.

18th

ADVENT

Come explore O Antiphons during Advent with the Adult class in the parlor. We will learn about a set of words of worship for the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve. Each week, for four weeks, beginning on December 2, we will use O Antiphons to guide our reflections and discussions on several important top-ics, including God’s past and present promises and how to re-spond to the gap between what is and what God intends. Don’t know what an antiphon is? It is a hymn or psalm sung or recited in responsive, alternating parts.

Adult Faith Class in the Parlor

It’s time to think about 2019, stewardship and what that means to us here at Sunrise. The annual pledge drive is progressing well! Thank you!

PER CAPITA Presbyterians pay per capita for every member. This year per capita is $30 per member. Have you paid your per capita for 2018 yet?

STEWARDSHIP AND FINANCE COMMITTEE Did you receive your letter from the Stewardship and Finance Committee? Please speak to Stephanie Cool if you did not receive one. God does so much through us. Together we can do more.

Prayer Notes O Lord,

Let me be a little kinder,

Let me be a little blinder

To the faults of those about me.

Let me praise a little more.

Let me be a little meeker

With the brother that is weaker;

Let me think more of my neighbor

And a little less of me.

Sunrise is sorry we can no longer order flowers for the Sanctuary at a reasonable price. The lady that was in charge has retired. We can not find a florist that can furnish our flowers. We ask you to purchase your flowers and bring them on the Sunday you wish. You can tell Martha what they are for that Sunday morning or you can let Edie know on the Tuesday before and she will put it in the bulletin. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The Worship Committee

Thanks to members of the Sunrise congregation who supported us during the illness and death of my mom, Bonnie Rathbun. Special thanks to Jean Adam, Jean Reed, Sharon Anderson and Rose Ma-rie Merrill for many visits to Mom over the last months. Thanks, too, to the team that arranged the treats for the family visitation (Rose Marie Merrill, Julie Parks, Mary McCall, Jean Adam, Jean Reed, Kathy Potts, The McAfees. What a comforting time for us! It was very meaningful. And, thanks to all who prayed for us and sent cards and memorials. What a wonderful thing for us to be surrounded by your love at this difficult time. Carol & Ed Viar & Family

Courtland, KS. For the past 6 years, Dan has provided the

majority of the pumpkins for the CASTLE pumpkin sale at less

than wholesale price. Dan is a great supporter of The CASTLE

Project. Thanks, Dan!

From SRHC chaplain Noni Strand: Not long ago, a gentleman came up to SRHC chaplain Noni Strand and started a conversation. At some point, he said: “You don’t remember me.” So, he told her how he had been extremely ill, had no family or friends around, and Noni visited him. She asked him if she could give him a prayer shawl, which she did, spreading it out over him as he lay in the hospital bed. At this point, she did remember him. He told her how much he had appreciated the prayer shawl during his illness—how much it meant for him to have it. Thanks to the ladies of Sunrise for the love of God, which wrapped this man during his illness.
