veterans Day 2017

Before we settle in for the Holidays, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Active Duty and Veteran personnel in our community. Your selfless service and sacrifice has provided the United States with an environment of freedom and prosperity that has become the envy of the entire world. This Veteran’s Day, please take the time to

remember and reflect on those who served and those who are still serving.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. If you’re going to deep fry that bird, here are some things to remember.

1. Hot oil may splash or spill during cooking. Contact between hot oil and skin could result in serious injury.

2. A hot oil spill can happen with fryers designed for outdoor use using a stand. The fryer could tip over or collapse causing the hot oil to spill. Newer countertop units using a solid base appear to reduce this risk. NFPA does not believe the risks of either type of turkey fryer to be acceptable because of the large amount of hot oil involved and the speed and severity of burns.

3. In deep frying, oil is heated to temperatures of 350° Fahrenheit or more. Cooking oil is combustible. If it is heated above its cooking temperature, its vapors can ignite.

4. Propane-fired turkey fryers must be used outdoors. They are very popular for Thanksgiving. Many parts of the country may have rain or snow at this time of year. If rain or snow hits the hot cooking oil, the oil may splatter or turn to steam, leading to burns.

5. The Turkeys must be completely thawed before placing in the fryer because a partially thawed turkey can cause the hot oil to splatter and cause serious burns.

6. The fryers use a lot of oil, about five gallons. Considering the size and weight of the turkey, extreme caution must be taken when placing and removing the turkey from the fryer to be sure it is not dropped back into the fryer, splattering the oil on the chef.

NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to look for grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants that sell deep fried turkeys, or consider a new type of “oil-less” turkey fryer.”

The Winter Springs Police Department would like to wish you and yours a very happy and safe Thanksgiving. We are truly thankful for a community such as ours.

POL I C E EXPLORERS

Are you interested in a career in Criminal Justice? Are you between the ages of 14 and 21? Do you enjoy problem solving, being personally challenged and succeeding in a team environment?

The Winter Springs Police Department would like to extend an invitation to all those who meet the above criteria to join us as a Winter Springs Police Explorer. Police Explorers are sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life program and give young men and women the opportunity to shadow police officers during their duties. Police Explorers can earn volunteer or community service hours as required by high school programs. Exploring will introduce you to the role of law enforcement in our community, the duties performed therein and the skills necessary to be successful in any career. Duties of an Explorer include attending bi-monthly meetings and training, working along with law enforcement during special events and community activities and setting an example for fellow students through community involvement.

If these activities sound fun to you and you would like to learn more, please go to http://www.winterspringsfl.org/EN/web/dept/pd/96297/96326/explorer_post_708.html and fill out the application at the bottom of the page. Please keep in mind that this is a police department so all applicants will be asked to provide finger prints and submit to a back ground check. Always remember, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. If you see something unusual, do not hesitate to notify the Police. If you feel uncomfortable about calling the police department, you can report suspicious activity anonymously to 1-800-423-TIPS or at www.crimeline.org. You don’t have to give your name. The citizens of Winter Springs and the Winter Springs Police Department can always work together to form

So you’ve decided to go shopping on Black Friday. Your sights are set on some real door-buster deals. If it’s a day of shopping without which you cannot live, keep these things in mind: 1. Be patient and courteous. Beginning the season in a frenzy and causing or becoming the victim of injury is no way to start. 2. Be patient and courteous. So important, it’s worth mentioning twice. 3. Don’t leave packages in your vehicle for extended periods of time. If you take items home in between trips, you will deny criminals the opportunity to take them from your vehicle. 4. Don’t go alone. You are always safer when you shop with a buddy. 5. Buy from reputable retailers who provide warranties and good customer support.
