A note from Marian Bourek, Executive Director “Hello?” I answered my home phone when I did not recognize the number on our caller ID.

“Hi, this is Katie.” (Not her real name.)

“Hi Katie,” I responded, thinking Katie? Katie who?

“I told them!” Katie said, “after all these years . . . I told them.”

“Is that a good thing, Katie?” I inquired, still trying to figure out with whom I was speaking.

“Yes, it’s a good thing and they still love me.”

Oh my gosh! It’s KATIE! The long-time-ago story flooded back: It was 1989, Katie was a college student, pregnant, alone and scared to death. She was sure her parents ‘would kill her’ because of her situation. Against my advice, Katie chose not to tell her parents about her pregnancy. As difficult as it was, Katie man-aged to go through her entire pregnancy with-out her parents’ knowledge of the baby. She placed her baby boy for adoption with a name-less family that she chose through a “closed” adoption. When Baby was born, Katie held him, told him how much she loved him and bid him farewell to the social worker. I got to be there. I was there for Katie - - to support her and to love her through all the decisions. I was there when the social worker placed him in the arms of his new mommy.

She never told her parents. To my knowledge, she never told anyone. Her life went on. She

graduated from college with high honors and started a career with a large company.

“Katie, I’m so happy you shared this with your parents,” I exclaimed with sincere gratitude.

“They were surprised when I told them, but admitted they knew something was different,” she explained. “Other than longing to meet their grandson, they totally agreed adoption was the best option. They still love me!”

“Of course they do,” I agreed. “They must be so proud of you for sharing the truth.

“I have many regrets,” Katie explained. “But I’ll never regret giving my baby life and plac-ing him for adoption. And now I am happy my parents know. They still love me!” she empha-sized once again.

Adoption is truly a loving option. The most recent statistics show there are more couples striving to adopt than there are children de-stroyed by abortion. Isn’t it interesting how evenly things could be worked out of only bio-logical parents would opt for adoption.

My husband and I have adopted children. Just ask us to share the kazillion stories ~ in our family alone ~ on the joys of adoption. There is no such thing as an “unwanted” child.

Katie has grown into a beautiful responsible woman. She does not know where her son is, but believes he is happy. She is the mom who gave him the gift of life, but he grew up else-where with his “real” family.

A 40 Days for Life Message from Columbia, Missouri:

“When my children ask me why women have abortions,” said a 40 Days for Life vigil participant in Columbia, “I try to keep it simple and say because they are scared or need help.”

When they ask why they pray at abortion facilities instead of just at home, “I explain we need to be there for those scared moms, so they know they aren’t alone, to offer love and help.”

This mom prayed with her children outside Planned Parenthood, then sang the song “Jesus Loves the Little Children” a few times.

But one of her youngsters stopped her and said, “Mom, now we need to sing ‘Jesus Loves the Scared Mommies’ so they know not to be scared anymore.”

“And so I substituted the words and we sang it,” she said, “over and over. She gets it. She has a heart of gold.”

Be sure to share your local 40 Days for Life stories with DCRTL.

EVERYONE DESERVES A BIRTHDAY!

During Respect Life Month several of our local students participated in art and writing contests. The theme for this year’s contests is: EVERY-ONE DESERVES A BIRTHDAY! The quality of the entries was amaz-ing! A big thank you to the hundreds who participated and to the parents and teachers who took the time to encourage your students to speak out for LIFE! Our judges are in the process of making their winning selections at this time. Look forward to our December newsletter where we will announce the winners.

By Father Noah Diehm

Dear friends,

Peace be with you! In this month of November, following as it does on the heels of October’s Respect Life Month, we tend to especially fo-cus on remembering our departed loved ones. Catholics start the month with two special ob-servances: the October 31st/November 1st cele-bration of the Solemnity of All Saints – the “heroes” of Christian faith in heaven who lived and died with heroic virtue and who coura-geously bore witness to their faith in Christ by what they did and said. The liturgical vesture for the day is white, symbolizing purity and victory. That day is immediately followed by the November 2nd observance of the Commem-oration of All the Faithful Departed, or more colloquially known as All Souls Day. The litur-gical vesture for the day could be white (though that creates confusion with the previous day), but is more appropriately black or purple, sym-bolizing the need for penance and purification. November 2nd remembers the faithful departed who died with faith in Christ, but who are not yet admitted to the beatific vision of God’s face. They need the purifying grace of purgato-ry in order to be freed from attachment to sin and so enter God’s heavenly kingdom. Catho-lics often devote the month of November to praying for the souls of the faithful departed.

These three days – October 31st (aka Hallow-een, but more appropriately All Hallow’s Eve, or the evening before the Solemnity of All Hal-lows {All Saints}), November 1st, and Novem-ber 2nd – form a kind of “fall triduum” in an-swer to the spring Easter triduum of new life. Easter, associated with the spring, was a time to focus on the new life of the resurrection. This time of year, the fall, is an opportunity to focus on preparing for the end of life and the “four last things” – death, judgment, heaven, and hell.

For Christians, it’s a time of great hopefulness as we look forward to the reward of the just in heaven, and even the hopefulness of being purged of sinfulness in the furnace of God’s love, which is purgatory. Perhaps it’s also an appropriate time to be mindful of how we gen-erally approach the end of life. There are some (usually without Christian faith) who see the end of life, and the pain sometimes associated with it, as things to be avoided. As a conse-quence, they might promote hastening death with medically-assisted suicide. Those who advocate for medically-assisted suicide, wheth-er they realize it or not, are attempting to play God. This is an important life issue. Life is God’s gift, and it is not for human beings to decide when life begins or when it ends. What-ever the circumstances of life, we must acknowledge it as a gift – a gift always worthy of being respected and defended. If the end of life brings pain, as Christians we can focus on our participation in the redemptive suffering of Christ and how that suffering is a source of life. In this way, we can make positive contributions toward stopping the spread of the destructive Culture of Death and establishing a thankful Culture of Life. God bless, Fr. Noah J. Diehm

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH

Adoption is a beautiful option. One of Planned Parenthood’s long-time slogans, “Every child a wanted child,” is misleading. They are trying to say it’s acceptable to abort a child if he or she is not “wanted” (or planned) by his/her parents. That actually describes the parents, not the baby.

Every child is a “wanted” child! Every child is wanted by God. That alone shows the great value of every single person. National statistics show year after year that there are more couples filing for adoption than there are surgical abor-tions. Every child that dies from abortion is wanted by another couple. If only the birth parents would consider adoption rather than death, many families could be complete. Every child is a wanted child.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL PRO-LIFE AWARENESS MONTH!

Every year during Respect Life Month, DCRTL brings in an internationally known speaker to address students, church groups and civic organizations. This year our guest speaker was Melissa Ohden, an abortion survivor. Melis-sa’s personal story is incredible. In 1977 her life was intended to end as her biological mother underwent a saline infusion abortion. The abortion failed and Melissa was born alive! We hope you all had an opportunity to hear her speak. Come to our office to see some of her materials or check out her web-site: melissaohden.com.

Her message was loud and clear: We must respect life in all its stages; we must speak out on behalf of all life. Many thanks to those who hosted an event with Melissa, especially Cascade Area Right to Life who worked closely with DCRTL in scheduling several speaking engage-ments. Melissa’s amazing story of her real-life events touched the hearts of hundreds in our community. Thank you, Mrs. Ohden for your dedication to protecting human life! Thank you for sharing your wisdom, expertise and enthusiasm.

SILENCE!

What if your voice was silenced? On October 20th several area students participated in the Silent Day of Solidarity - - one day set aside in silence. Each student represented a preborn child who has no voice. They were asked to not say a word all day long.

Every day in the U.S. over 4,000 American citizens are silenced against their wills. They have their voices permanently silenced and they never get the opportunity to speak on behalf of themselves.

One student’s reflection: “The day of silence is still current on my mind. In today’s world, eve-rybody is communicating in countless ways. We all want our ideas and opinions heard, but we never take into account what it would be like to be deprived of our voices or even worse, to not have one at all. It was far more impactful on me than I would have believed. I had no way to communicate my opinion.” Preborn children have no voice but yours.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET

RATIONALIZING RESEARCH ON FETAL TISSUE, By Fr. Dwayne Thoman Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish, Dubuque.

I wrote a letter to the editor of TIME magazine. As far as I know, the letter hasn’t been pub-lished. I was writing in response to an article in TIME which argued that research on fetal tissue obtained from abortions is acceptable because of the possible benefits derived from this research. My main argument against this rationalization was that “The end does not jus-tify the means.” This is a long time moral prin-ciple that asserts it is never moral to achieve a perceived good by an immoral means. A sim-ple example: is it moral for a student to cheat on a test (an immoral act) in order to achieve a good grade (a perceived good)? Most people would quickly respond no. Unfortunately, we hear this argument advanced all the time – in daily personal discourse or in the media. I encourage you to listen. How many times will you hear this rationalization used throughout the course of a week to justify an immoral act?

The revelation this summer that some abortion-ists perform abortions in such a way so as to preserve the integrity or organs and thereby make them more usable for research reveals a new side to the underbelly of the abortion in-dustry. I can think of no words in the English language to describe this disgusting practice. And then to think that some people can cava-lierly discuss their procedures while sipping wine and eating salad! This revelation has eaten away at my heart this summer as I have tried to wrap my mind around such disrespect for God-given life.

In these months I have struggled with how to respond to this news. The first thing to come to mind is prayer. Pray for abortionists, for those struggling with an unwanted pregnancy and pray that each of us grows in our respect for life. And we can continue to learn and teach others about respect life issues. What is Church teaching on these issues? How can this teaching be applied to respect life issues?

NATIONAL MARCH FOR LIFE ~ January 20 – 24, 2016

The 43rd anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that decriminalized abortion will be observed in our nation’s capitol with the annual National March for Life. DCRTL, every year since 1994, has led pilgrimages to this event. Our message to the Iowa Congressional Delegation – and all of America – is that we must return protection to the preborn children. The violence of abortion must stop. This is a priority.

Would you like to be a part of this year’s pilgrimage? Approximately 300 people from our area will be participating. There are a few spots open for additional pilgrims. Time and prices vary slightly depending on the group you wish to travel with (“Our Lady of Life,” “Mazz Students,” or “DCRTL Adults”). The general schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, January 20: Departure from Dyersville and Dubuque in the evening Thursday, January 21: Arrive in DC/Visit MFL Exhibit Booths/Attend Pro-Life Mass Friday, January 22: MFL Rally/March/Silent No More Speakers Night Tour of Monuments/Rose Dinner Saturday, January 23: Free Day/Depart for home after Mass in the evening Sunday, January 24: Arrive at home – approximately noon

We will continue our pilgrimage to Washington in the years to come. We’ll stand up and speak out until the hearts, minds and laws of America reflect protection for the children. We’ll continue our travels and our efforts until that victorious day when we travel to Washington for a Celebra-tion of Life!

Call DCRTL today to register for this amazing pro-life pilgrimage or send in the registration form below along with your $100 deposit. (Due November 5)

HEALING THE PAIN ~ Rachel’s Vineyard

RACHEL’S VINEYARD: Healing the Pain of Abortion. 1-877-HOPE-4-ME / www.RachelsVineyard.org

Rachel’s Vineyard offers weekend retreats for healing after abortion. The weekends are a beauti-ful opportunity for any person who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion. Each weekend is a very specific process designed to help you experience the mercy and compas-sion of God. It is also an opportunity to surface and release repressed feelings of anger, shame, guilt, and grief.

Each weekend is run by volunteers who care deeply about your needs. Many of the facilitators have suffered the same loss.

The weekend is a chance to get away from daily pressures to focus on the buried emotions of the past in light of present symptoms and begin healing through a supportive trauma sensitive pro-cess. Rachel’s Vineyard provides a non-judgmental, safe environment. The weekend will help your soul find a voice, and transform the pain of the past into hope and love.

One testimony: “I experienced a great inner healing as a result of attending the Rachel’s Vine-yard Weekend. I highly recommend this program to anyone who has felt the void and shame of the abortion experience. It is wonderful to forgive yourself, find the unconditional love of Christ and grieve the loss of your little child.”

For more information about the weekends near you visit the website (listed above) or call confi-dentially at 1-877-HOPE-4-ME (1-877-467-3463).

A CELEBRATION IN MEMORY OF SIANNE CRIMMINS

On Friday, October 9 an event to celebrate the life of Sianne Crimmins was held at Hills & Dales Community Center. Music, refreshments, and lots of memories were shared by all who attended. It was a beautiful trib-ute to a young lady who enjoyed life. Sianne, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 31, 2015, was the daughter of Vince and Jackie Crimmins - - long time members and co-founders of DCRTL.

This special event was sponsored by a memorial gift from Dubuque County Right to Life.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

There is a “Journey to Freedom.” Most recently an exhibit bringing awareness to the crime of human trafficking, “Journey to Freedom” was in Dubuque. It was sponsored by Women Reli-gious and Associates of the Coalition Against Human Trafficking in the Tri-State Area. It was very informative and I hope many of you had the opportunity to see it.

Journey to Freedom is a walk-through exhibit that highlights how human trafficking is active within our local community. The display tells the story of Iowans who have been trafficked for sexual favors. Through photos, words, and displays, we see the terrible tragedies in the lives of some people.

Who is at risk? Runaways, children of dys-functional homes, the homeless, young teens seeking a better life/pay, teens who feel hope-less. Pimps watch for such people on the streets and malls. They befriend them with gifts and

affirmations to cap-ture them for a life-time of horror.

Every 30 seconds another person be-comes a victim of human trafficking.

How can we help? Be aware. If you see something that doesn’t seem right, call the Hu-man Trafficking Hotline (888) 373-7888. Edu-cate yourself. Educate your own children so that they are street smart. Pray daily to end Human Trafficking.

Human Trafficking has come to the attention of your DCRTL office many times in recent weeks. It is our plan to assist in bringing an awareness to our community. Watch our future newsletters, website, Facebook page, and “Happenings” for more information. In the near future, we will sponsor an event featuring a rescued victim’s story. Watch for this guest speaker in our upcoming events.

NOVEMBER ELECTIONS

In America we have the awesome privilege, and responsibility, of voting. It is immensely im-portant to know where your candidates stand on all issues, but most especially those dealing with life. Quite often two or more political candidates running for the same office have very distinct differences when it comes to defending and respecting human life.

DCRTL is not a “Political Action Committee” (PAC) - - we are an Educational Organization; therefore, we do not endorse political candidates, but we do educate the public on pro-life issues and where candidates stand on these issues. We are currently in the process of gathering infor-mation on all candidates running for office in 2015. Although this is not the “big” year, it is still very important to be knowledgeable in the voting booth.

OUR OWN ELECTIONS ~ November 5

National elections are held in November. Many local elections are held as well. Even as “local” as DCRTL! Our board of directors is made up of elected officials chosen by popular vote from you, the DCRTL membership. During our regular membership event held on Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 PM in our office (2205 Carter Rd.), elections will be held. We currently have three openings on our board. Each position is for a 3-year term. Our nominating committee is present-ing the following slate:

John Freund -- At age 9, John D. Freund moved 91 miles from the land of his birth, Waterloo, to Iowa’s first settlement, and he has considered himself a Dubuquer ever since. He passed through the halls of St. Columbkille Elementary and Wahlert High School before exploring the campuses of Loras College and the University of Iowa on his way to receiving a juris doctorate from the intrastate rival of his preferred Cyclones. John has practiced law for 11 years, the last 5 being solo, and returns home every night to a wonderful wife, Amy, who has served on the DCRTL board, and their five children, who range in age from 7 to 14. He has no memory of being other than pro-life, and he hopes to bring in particular to the DCRTL board his perspective on workplace technology, one of his keen interests.

Jessica Kemp -- A born and raised Dubuquer, who is married and has three children. Jessica is a member of Resurrection Parish. She has always been pro-life and has previously participated in DCRTL’s Mime for Life as a college student at Clarke University where she graduated with a nursing degree. Her mother has more courage than most could ever imagine having Jessica at age 18 when there were other options that could have changed her life. Jessica’s mother went on to have 7 other children and remains married to the father of them all. Jessica hopes to be a great addition to DCRTL’s board of directors and wants to spread the importance of the Right to Life.

Ellen Markham -- As an educator and nurse, Ellen has shared her pro-life convictions on many fronts. In June 2008, she retired from her position as executive director of DCRTL and has been volunteering as picket coordinator for DCRTL ever since. She is a member of our Speakers Bureau and currently serves on the board of directors. Ellen is very involved with her parish and other civic organizations and enjoys spending time with her family. She has always been pas-sionate about life and is eager to spread the pro-life message.

Nominations from the floor will also be accepted at the meeting on November 5. All candidates must be DCRTL members in good standing. All DCRTL members are eligible to vote. If you are interested in serving on our board, please call the office for details. Also feel free to call any current board members to ask about their service on the board. It’s a big job with serious respon-sibilities, but the rewards are plentiful.

PRO-LIFE MASS

We are in a spiritual battle with the culture of death so we must use spiritual weapons to fight it. One of the strongest spiritual weapons we have is the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Did you know there is a Mass said in Dubuque every week specifically for the pro-life move-ment? It’s at the Power of Prayer Adoration Chapel (1860 St. Ambrose St.). Come join us as we spiritually battle on behalf of the pro-life cause every Wednesday at 2:15 PM.
