I see a big holiday on the calendar. Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday for giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest. Like the United States and Can-ada, countries around the world have harvest festival or Thanksgiving Day to commemorate labor and production and give one another thanks. As a celebra-tion of the good harvest, Koreans visit and have a ritual at their ancestral hometowns, remove weeds around the grave of their ancestors and share a feast of traditional Korean food such as songpyeon and rice wines. I was told that fall is a busy season in Stevens Point for various festivals. I’m looking for-ward to the Holiday Fest at St. Paul’s. I think it will be an event to celebrate and be joyful together, which makes us feel abundant with sharing food, music and arts that people bring in. If I think of harvest festival or Thanksgiving Day for God’s people, it should be far more than a special day on the calendar. The Bible encourages us to live a life of thanksgiving each day. I have a candle holder which says, “count your blessings.” It reminds me so I don’t forget that I have been blessed each day. Being thankful to God, for all of God’s blessings, may be the best mark of Christians. If there is one more thing reminding me of this thanksgiving season, I can say it would be the season for sharing our benefits as well as joyful hearts. I remem-ber a church that I attended in my 20’s. On the thanksgiving Sunday, we brought fruits and put them on the alter, until the alter was decorated with all the fruits that we brought from home. After the worship, we shared them with the neighbors who were without family. Through this ritual that has repeated for years in the church, I realize that what we have comes from God and we offer it to God, and what we bring before God is for our neighbors, too. So to me, thanksgiving is the season to reach out to neighbors with warm hearts like when we visit our family, as well as the season to praise God’s abundance. While I am enjoying that nature is getting colorful and ripe, I give thanks to God that we are a part of this wonderful creation that reflects the beauty in God, and that God is good to all.

Midwest Mission Distribution Center January 14-17, 2015
Want to volunteer? A Midwest Mission Distribution Center trip is being planned to Chatham, IL for January 14-17, 2015. Last year we had a group go from our church and came back with stories of the wonderful ex-perience. If you would like to have a hands-on short-term mission trip, this is for you. Please let the church office know by mid-November if you plan to go. A $50 deposit is requested at that time. The total trip is about $250. We drive down (6 hours), stay in a dorm and prepare our own food. The leaders take care of that. This is a good way to see how the many kits are assembled, boxed and labeled to be sent to various countries. As a team we worked in varying areas of interest. As we get closer to the date, we will have a meeting to dis-cuss all the details of what to bring, etc. Prayerfully give this serious thought. Leaders are Bonnie Lund and Mary Gurlea. They will gladly chat with you and answer your questions.
Ghana Mission Project Needs Our friends at the Methodist Hospital in Wenchi sent a note from their nursing staff thanking us for the supplies that we took to them last January. While we were visiting them we asked how we could be helpful this year and received the following note “we are so thankful for the love and outpouring of support your congregation provided, specifically the dresses, caps and toiletries that were sent to our children’s unit.” “This singular ges-ture contributed significantly towards attracting more women to the hospital for supervised deliveries. Your gifts made a wonderful contribution.” The Wenchi Hospital nursing staff sent the following list of needs. If you can contribute items or funds to pur-chase items, they will be put to great use. Please review the following list and send donations to John Munson, 1101 Brawley Street, Stevens Point, Wisconsin 54481 or bring them to the church to be included in our next ship-ping containers.
As you can see we will need to purchase some of these items so financial gifts are much appreciated. However, if any of you have access to clinics or hospitals who might donate items we would appreciate having you contact them and make arrangement for the donation. ~Methodist in Ghana Mission Team

Are you willing to be a servant with the Interfaith Food Pantry who could be on call? Sometimes a person who has volunteered to help at the pantry finds they cannot assist and they need some-one to fill in. Please call the church office (715-344-3557 or 715-344-9192) to volunteer.
The Interfaith Food Pantry is a full pantry program, serving all individuals and families in need in Portage County. The pantry is open the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The only requirement to receive food is to show proof of residency in Portage County. Recipients are eligible to come both times each month. Donations may be dropped off at the church or at the pantry by calling Mel Dow at 715-347-2689.

Changing the world, one life at a time
The United Methodist Church Reconciling Statement
The Springs, St. Paul’s and UWSP Campus Ministry publically affirms a commitment to spiri-tual diversity and individual integrity, believing that our faith compels us to be in intentional ministry to, with and for all people, including those who have not always been accepted be-cause of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual/affectional identity, age, physical abili-ties/qualities, social/economic status, family make-up, or religious background. In addition, we support the full inclusion of all these persons in the United Methodist Church.
Consumer Wellness Advocate Workshop
John Munson, Master trainer for Vesuvius Health and Wellness will offer his Consumer Wellness Advocate workshop on December 7th 8:30-12:30 PM at St. Paul’s. This workshop normally costs $79 per participant but he will do the workshop for the cost of materials. The Wills, Memorials and Gifts committee are fund-ing half of the materials cost so the first 25 participants who stop by the church office and pay $18 will claim the available spots. Checks may be made out to the United Methodist Church of Stevens Point and Plover. The Consumer Wellness Advocate (CWA) is the world’s first and only consumer-level certification in well-being. It is the wellness equivalent to CPR. Participants will become familiar with 10 personal dimen-sions of wellness, rate themselves as they participate in an interactive workshop, and become familiar with the wellness concept as it applies to everyday living. Upon completion of the workshop all partici-pants will become certified consumer wellness advocates and be invited to take part in a weekly on-line wellness connection. This is a weekly experience delivered free to your computer once a week for 52 weeks that encourages you to improve your personal wellness lifestyle. This is a workshop for people high school age and above. All learning materials will be provided at the workshop. Participants will walk away feeling that they had fun, learned more about wellness and have a path they can follow for the next year to add enjoyment and satisfaction to their lives. Sign up soon so you can reserve a spot. Stop by the church office this week. If you can’t make this workshop and still would like to experience it, the workshop is available on-line at mywellnessregistry.com.
“I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or that, but now I pray that he will guide me to do whatever I’m supposed to do, what I can do. I used to pray for answers, but now I’m praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changes things but now I know that prayer changes us and we change things.” Mother Teresa I pinned this quote to my Pinterest page the other day. There are so many quotes by Mother Teresa that I like, but this one I LOVED! I think it is common to pray for things, or situations, but how often do we really pray for change? How often do we pray to change ourselves, our point of view, or our level of understanding? How often do we pray for Jesus to use us to do his work? How often do we ask God to change our mindset from “what can I get” to “what can I give?” From “fix this” to “what can I do to make it better?” How often do we ask for something when instead, we should be asking somehow? Somehow there is a way I can make a difference, somehow I can heal the hurting, somehow I can give hope. So, next time we pray, let us take a moment to pray for God to use us. Because through us, God can do the best work of all. By praying for a change to take place within, we can do the most good out in the world.
“And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3

#307 Giving breaks the temptation of greed.
“The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap boun-tifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7a) Edythe was taking care of all her annual donations to charities. She was going to make her pledge to the church pretty much the same as all the others when she realized how important the church is to her. So this year she made it three times her usual donation. She was surprised to learn later in a conversation with her friend, Bill, the church Treasurer, that her gift was below average. While the most common gifts were about $10 - $30/week, the top givers gave more than $10,000 each per year. That changed the average. When she asked the pastor how much she should give, she answered, “Give what God is calling you to give.” That did-n’t help. Later that week Edythe decided she wanted to make sure she paid her way. Again, she had a hard time get-ting someone to tell her an amount. She asked Bill and he said, “That’s not how we do it.” Edythe re-sponded, “Well, if the budget is $140,000 and we have 200 members, that means we need $700 from every member, right?” “Yes,” Bill answered, but that number includes members who are in nursing homes and confirmed youth, as well as families who may be out of a job. Are you saying a family of four members owes four times as much as you?” “Well, not really,” Edythe responded. Edythe was perplexed. “Well, I’ve heard you say that our mission giving, or our apportionments, are about $100/member. So, I’ll start there. Plus, you said we have about 100 families, so if I divide the $140,000 budget by 100, that’s $1,400 this year. That’s a lot.” Bill answered, “What is God calling you to give? Look at what you have. Can you give God a percentage? I know if everyone in our church gave just 3-5% of their annual income to the church, we wouldn’t have any money problems at all.” “That makes sense,” Edythe said. “Now, Bill, you’re the numbers man so help me do the math!”
What is God calling you to give to your church? Call if we can help.

It can also be a hard time for those who are single and looking to fill a void. NUTURE is reaching out to those persons. This group will take the format of whatever YOU want it to be. Its purpose is to meet, support and share interests with other single persons. Interested? Join us on Thursday, Nov. 13th—10:30 a.m. in the Chapel at St. Paul’s. A new small group that will provide support for your search. A path to explore prayer, scripture and the spiritual journey. An experience of God’s grace and love in daily times of reflection. Companions in Christ moves through a study of five topics: · Spiritual Formation (embracing the journey) – five weeks · Scripture (feeding on the word) – five weeks · Prayer (deepening our prayer) – six weeks · Vocation (responding to our call) – five weeks · Spiritual companionship (exploring spiritual guidance) – five weeks After journeying through daily reading and reflection, each week concludes with a meeting of the group. Companions in Christ offers a powerfully transforming small group experience. We will explore classic spiritual practices. We will develop new patterns for living. We will experience a deepening relationship with God and each other. We will open ourselves to God’s presence and the movement of the Spirit. As we listen and explore together, we will surely meet our loving God. This journey will be starting in January of 2015, led by Karl Weyers and Karen Phelps. The text is $20. Scholarships are available. The group members will decide day and time. If you are interested, please contact the Church office 715-344-3557 or 715-344-9192, Karl Weyers at 715-347-1644 or [email protected], Karen Phelps at 920-912-4770 or [email protected]

Bar Hopping with the Preacher In October, six people from our congregation went to the Airport Bar, at the corner of Hwy 66/Wilshire and had a great time interacting with the people present. We introduced ourselves as neighbors from the United Methodist church down the street. We ended up hosting two games of pool with a couple of men standing at the bar. Some people had extended conversations with two other people. The experience was great. On No-vember 13 at 6:00 pm we will be gathering at Mikey’s Bar, 3018 Village Park Dr., Plover. Come join others in being good neighbors to our community.

Paul Webster, a United Methodist missionary native who serves at the Mujila Falls Agri-cultural Centre in Zambia, has contracted malaria. A Wisconsin native who was commis-sioned in 1992, Paul is not facing this disease for the first time, but asks for prayers for his quick recovery so he can return to the work that he loves. Paul’s story is unfortunately not an uncommon one among people living in Africa. Ma-laria accounts for over 200 million cases and kills over 625,000 people each year. Sub-
Saharan Africa is particularly affected by this disease with over 85% of cases and over 90% of deaths happen-ing in that region. Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite that lives in the female Anopheles mosquito. When the mosquito bites a human, the person becomes a carrier of the disease and the parasite proceeds to take over the red blood cells in the body. Initially, the disease causes fever, headaches, vomiting, and joint pain. If left untreated, malaria can progress to cause organ failure and death. But there is great reason to hope: malaria is both preventable and treatable. United Methodists all across the world have joined the fight against this disease through our Imagine No Malaria campaign. This initiative of the global United Methodist Church is working toward raising $75 million by the end of 2015 in the effort to end deaths and suffering from malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. Imagine No Malaria provides bed nets, edu-cation, and treatment to build a sustainable, accountable system to fight the malaria disease. You can support the efforts of Paul Webster by writing a check to the Wisconsin Conference Treasurer for Fund #3443. For more information about the Imagine No Malaria initiative or ideas about ways you can get involved, please visit our website at www.ImagineNoMalariaWI.org or contact Wisconsin Field Coordinator, Nicole Wilken, at [email protected].
RELIEF FOR TYPHOON SURVIVORS Thanks to a grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to the Manila Episcopal Conference, United Methodist Church of the Philippines, 386 families displaced by Typhoon Glenda will receive food packages to meet basic needs. Typhoon Glenda (also known as Rammasun) made landfall on the is-land of Luzon in mid-July. Storm winds toppled trees and electrical poles, while ripping roofs off homes along its devastating path. The typhoon also shut down most of the capital area, traveling through the provinces of Quezon, Laguna, Aurora and Metro Manila, areas
where families have been identified to receive food assistance. The relief packages which consist of locally purchased rice, sardines, instant noodles, sugar and meatloaf, will go to those deemed most vulnerable. After Glenda, Typhoon Mario (also called Fung-wong) struck Luzon in mid-September, again causing damag-ing floods on the island. UMCOR is providing food packages to these survivors as well and will reach 404 families with the emergency assistance. Your gifts to International Disaster Response, Advance #982450 enable UMCOR to support the needs of survivors during times of disaster
PRAYER: MIDWEST STORMS
Let us continue to pray for the people of the U.S. Midwest during their time of recovery. As severe storms ripped through the region recently, let us look to God and remember,
“All will be well, and all will be well,
and every kind
of thing will be well”
From Julian of Norwich’s Showings of Divine Love, taken from Prayers for Strength, the Upper Room for UMCOR
