My son loves hunting...squirrel, deer, rabbit, bird and anything else that can be stalked with a gun! Fortunately for me (it’s not the hunting I dislike, it’s the waking up in the dark!) he has no shortage of family members beg-ging to help him fulfill his desire. Recently, a rare Saturday when no one was available to take him came about. At least 20 times a day accompanied with suggestions of where and with what I heard “can we go hunting Satur-day dad?” Thankfully, just in time for me to set my alarm for a time not to be seen again for a long time I remembered the words of James Dobson. “Before you know it, that child at your feet will become a young man who will pack his bags and take his first steps into the adult world. Raising chil-dren who have been loaned to us for a brief moment outranks every other responsibility.” I would add “or selfish desire.” Nothing you or I want to do with our time off outweighs investing in the lives of our children and no, we didn’t kill anything but it sure beat sleeping in!

When I was growing up, I had a big, blue sticker chart. If I was a “good” girl and did all my chores, I would get a sticker for that day. At the end of the week, if all my stickers were full I would get a reward...usually five bucks or something new from the toy aisle at Wal-Mart. Nothing too fancy! Sometimes we can train our kid’s to view their faith in the same way. If we’re not careful, we can focus on making their behavior a certain way, to be nice, to be polite, control their temper, and “be good,” instead of melting their hearts with the good news of Jesus. Not that good behavior is not important! We love it when our babies behave well for us! But we must remember that to Christ, a transformed heart is more important than behavior. Obedience is the heart’s answer to God’s grace!
