“Thanks a lot!” Those are words that are often said with a good dose of sarcasm. At such times, we are not really thankful. Perhaps we have been given the news that the car repair is going to be more extensive and far more expensive than we had anticipated. “Thanks a lot!” We had our hearts set on playing basketball this year, but we get cut from the team after tryouts. “Thanks a lot!” The doctor breaks the news to us that the cause of our problems is a chronic condition that we will have to live with for the rest of our lives, and treating the symptoms with medication all that we can do is. “Thanks a lot!” Because the economy is struggling, our employer finds in necessary to downsize, and it is our job that gets the ax. “Thanks a lot!”

There are many situations in life where we are disappointed, frustrated, and sometimes even frightened. If we had ultimate control over what happened in our world, all “bad news” and troubling circumstances would never touch our lives. But we live in a world that has been ruined by sin, and the things that happen to us reflect that reality.

The Apostle Paul’s advice to the Thessalonians was to give thanks to the Lord not only during times of plenty or when the Lord blessed them, but “in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:13). It can be challenging even for seasoned Christians to be thankful when life becomes difficult and the clouds grow dark. At such times the believer is tempted to question God’s love and faithfulness. “Why did you let this happen to me, God?” or “Where were you when I needed you most?” Even though we know we are to give thanks in

all circumstances, at such times we may do so half-heartedly, or worse yet, tongue in cheek.

“Thanks a lot, God!”

However, even in challenging situations, we can say, “Thanks a lot, God!”

and really mean it, because God has a plan for

us! Through his prophet, the Lord said, “For I know the plans I

have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope

and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

We may not know the full extent of God’s plan – why he would let our loved ones die, why he would let us become

injured or ill, why he would allow us to suffer financial loss, or whatever challenge we

are facing – but we know that his love for us will not grow cold. We know that God will remain faithful

to his promise to be with us always. And we can count on the fact that God is going to work all things – even things that seem to be bad – for our spiritual good, so that we might be brought closer to him and to have our faith and trust in him to be strengthened. Then we will be able to say, no matter what the circumstances might be, “Thanks a lot, God,” and truly mean it.

As a family of believers united in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the members of Star of Bethlehem Congregation are committed, with the help of the Holy Spirit and directed by God’s Word, to glorify God by -

BAPTISM I was only six weeks old when I was

adopted by my parents. I didn’t choose them; they chose me. I am grateful that I was able to grow up in a stable Christian home.

I was only eight days old when I was adopted by God. I didn’t choose Him; He chose me. I am grateful to go to the house of the Lord and know that I am His child.

My parents made my adoption official in a ceremony at the court house. Even though I was not born their child, now I share their family name, and I will receive their inheritance.

God made my adoption official when I was baptized into his name (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Even though I was not born His child, he has placed his name on me, and I belong to him. I will receive his inheritance.

I will share my parents’ inheritance with my siblings, three adopted and one natural-born. It will be divided evenly among us.

The only begotten Son of God has already received his inheritance: resurrection from the dead. Because He received His, I know that my inheritance will be the same thing! And I will share it with all the rest of God’s children by faith.

I don’t know if adopted children appreciate their baptisms more. I do know that I appreciate mine.

Rev. Paul Prange, administrator for the Board of

Ministerial Education reflects on his baptism.
