GOLF SECTION

The Golf Section has completed a particularly phrenetic month of activity on both the courses and the hostelries of Thailand and certain members have aspired to new heights of endeavour at both venues. Avid readers of this column, if any exist, will no doubt recollect that last month they were left 1n a cliff-hanging situation. (Our Captain likened it to an episode in the Adventures of Pearl White but few of us including your scribe, are sufficiently mature to comprehend the simile.) We refer of course to the Club Championship (McMahon Cup) when after the first round, Leon Van der Watt and Julian Wells were locked together on a score of 79. Most creditable performances which demoted other aspiring champions to the role of "also-rans".

It is said, even allowing for journalistic hyperbole, that the final round of this year's Open Championship at Turnberry produced the most exciting grandstand finish in golf but our combatants obviously had decided to rival, if not excel, the efforts of Watson and Nicklaus. Excitement provided the only comparison because the Turnberry Links could not be likened to the Railway course in the wet season where players struggled like "coos in glaur" through patches of soggy knee-high rough generously distributed about the fairways. However, let us not detract from the sense of occasion. After 27 holes Jul ian and Leon were still neck and neck but the "stouter" physique of Van der Watt had the staying power on the heavy going to edge ahead on the final nine until disaster struck on the fateful se~enteenth in the shape of a triple bogey seven! Suddenly all square again with one hole to play. On the green, Leon lined up a twenty foot putt, shutting out the horrendous memory of the previous hole, and calmly holed it. All praise to the winner but let's also congratulate a most gallant runnerup. For the record books the scores were as follows:-

a Drinks Shelter during the fury of the storm their only concern being that the beer might not outlast the downpour. Indeed one of their naval partners reminisced of the time it rained without ceasing for three days and nights and Fred, always the selfjsh opportunist, purchased the last of the hard boiled eggs.

The excellence of our hosts' generosity was so magnificent that we boarded the bus at peace with the world and your scribe, who is noted for his retiring nature, sat silently enthralled by musical renditions describing a Saturday night hop in a Scottish rural community populated by the most gifted and amazing contortionists and an American zoological study of animals ranging from Orang-Utans to Brown Billed Ducks. The tattered remnants installed themselves in the Club awaiting the arrival of John Weymouth who had been delayed by a very slow fourball and even in retrospect on Sunday morning there were a few who still voted the day a resounding success. We have until the 14th January to regain our strength for the postponed confrontation.

Now, on to the Captains Prize at Rose Garden on 9th October. Peter really took our breath away by presenting two splendid prizes - a set of lynx irons and a specially weighted putter. Competition was naturally fierce and the final outcome could not have been closer with Mike Taylor and Kerry Jowett both scoring 37 points but Mike lifted the irons with the better inward half . The fact that Kerry got the putter is irony in itself because the result was determined on the greens with Mike holing everything holeable and Kerry missing what in matchplay would have been "glimmee" putts with .a rusty antique that brought back memories of cleeks and baffys. It is interesting to mention that Mike had cause for a double celebration as it was also his birthday. He successfully contrived to keep this fact a dark secret on the day so I have no intention of revealing his age particularly as it amounts to three more than his score.

r SQUASH SECTION

At the time of gOing to press, the 17th league was slOWly coming to life with 106 COmpetitors faCing the prospect of fitting in 419 games by the end of November.

At one stage it lOoked like 12 divisions of 8 (A . Hawtin having Sportingly agreed to take home leave to avoid being the 97th entry) but the century ,was passed just before lunch at which point the captain promptly declared, but _ not before a few more quick Singles had brought the total to 106. Discussions in the bar centred upon the unprecedented step of creating a 13th division, but no-one was prepared to have it on his conscience. (Telegrams to A. Hawtin telling him he might as well COme back have

not received any reply . Will his game be unrecognizable when he gets back? Has he got the address of Bernard Grogan's coach?)

* * *

It is understood that the Thailand Squash Rackets Association has organised a league to fUrther interest in the game in Thailand. The league, which begins in December, includes teams from the Club and the RBSC. Matches will be played on the Club courts weekly on Wednesday evenings commencing at 7.30 P.m.
