BY CHRIS REIS, CCM I can’t believe we are only 55 days away from Christmas! Where has 2017 gone? I am happy to report my first two months as General Manager at CCP have been awesome! The membership and staff have all been so welcoming. The Club has been busy from the first day I walked in the door from Maui Jim festivities, the BMW Championship, our Grandview Invitational Tournament, multiple private golf outings and club-sponsored events. Seeing the Club this active helps me to understand how we operate and where I can best direct my efforts. With the holidays fast approaching, the Club continues to be very busy and I look forward to my first holiday season at CCP.
And with the holidays comes the annual request to the membership for donations to the Employee Holiday Fund. The Holiday Fund is a great way to show the staff your appreciation for all their efforts throughout the year. This special gift from the membership is also a great incentive to our staff and defines CCP as one of the top employers in the area. On behalf of the staff, I want to take this opportunity and thank all the members for their consideration in donating to this unique holiday tradition.
In that same vein, the staff at CCP do a wonderful job and many of them have been loyal employees for many years. I would like to congratulate the following
individuals who have reached career milestones in years of service:
40 Years Rosemary Hughes -Kitchen Staff Started March 15, 1977
Ann Reichard -Front Desk Supervisor Started November 27, 1977
25 Years Robert Friend -Grounds Maintenance Started July 9, 1992
15 Years Larry Milsteadt -Grounds Maintenance Started July 16, 2002
Thank you to these individuals for your hard work and dedication over the years!! CCP is, and will continue to be, a top private club in the Midwest and we achieve this by having long-standing employees who believe in our mission.
As we end our year, the management staff and I are working diligently to present the 2018 operational budget to the Board of Directors for approval. The goals for the budget are to be fiscally responsible and to address the continued need for top level amenities and services. As all of you are aware, these services come with expenses

and it is our highest priority to manage these expenditures while achieving our goal of total member satisfaction. The Club is projected to end 2017 either meeting or exceeding the budgeted goals. This has been a great year with perfect weather and increased usage by the membership. Additionally, membership numbers have been good in 2017, but we will continue to work on our goal of 500 member families for 2018. Keeping the membership levels up and seeing continued usage and growth helps to enhance our abilities to run the Club at the highest expectation levels. I will keep everyone informed of what to look forward to in 2018!!!
It has been a pleasure speaking with many of you, but I am sure I have not met or spoken with all of you. If you are at the Club and we have not met, please ask the staff to find me so I can introduce myself to you and your family. Please also feel free to share with me your comments and concerns about your Club – I always enjoy hearing about what you think of CCP.
I look forward to seeing everyone over the next two months enjoying the many holiday events and traditions at CCP.
Happy Holidays!!!
2017 EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY FUND
The Holiday Season should be a time of joy and sharing for all of us. As we share with our families and friends, let us also remember the many dedicated employees of The Country Club of Peoria who have worked all through the year to make the Club such an important and enjoyable part of our lives. Many of the Club's employees work quietly behind the scenes and may not be known to each of us, but it is their efforts and contribution each day that have made our time spent at the Club so continuously enjoyable and memorable.
The Board of Directors strongly encourages all members to make a generous contribution to the Employee Holiday Fund, in which all employees share, except the General Manager. New members often ask for guidance in trying to determine an appropriate contribution. The amounts contributed range from $75.00 to $500.00 or more.

FROM THE GOLF SHOP
BY SCOTT BROWNFIELD Wow, another golf season is winding down!! Since our last newsletter we have crowned: Club Champions, the Grandview Invitational Champions, and a High School State Champion. Beginning with our Club Championship, Ryan Julius won the Men’s Title over John Zimdars. Both individuals should be congratulated on a great year, knocking off several of our top players during the Championship. Other Flight winners include:
A-Flight Winner: Jeromee Hermann B-Flight Champion: Barry Cain C-Flight Champion: John Petrakis
The 2017 Grandview Invitation was played under perfect conditions in mid-September. This year’s Overall Champions were John Kepple and Chris Herget. Their consistent, steady golf outlasted the other forty-seven teams in the field. Listed below are the other Flight Winners from this year’s event:
Scott Mabee & Mike Ilic Matt Marchand & Jason Stuckwisch Rusty Gibson & Andrew Graham Sam Hoerr & Matt Wilson Paul Lippens & Fritz Cross Dennis Thomasson & Phil Otten James Debord & William DeBord
And as a reminder, the 2018 Grandview Invitational will be played earlier next year – on June 21st – 23rd. The field will also be expanded to sixty teams. If you are interested in playing next year, please call or email the Golf Shop.
Once again the Country Club of Peoria was represented at the Illinois State High School Championship in October. Tommy Kuhl won his second State Championship in the 2A division. Tommy broke several State records including the two-day total. His rounds of 63 & 66 crushed the field by 12 shots. Congratulations to Tommy Kuhl on an incredible High School career! We look forward to following him next year at the University of Illinois. Connor Vicary also had a great showing in this year’s State Tournament. Connor shot 77 & 79 which placed him tied for 33rd. Mike Wales also qualified for State
and represented very well. Mike carded rounds of 81 & 77 to finish in 43rd place. Connor and Mike are both sophomores and so we look forward to more State tournament appearances from these two gentlemen.
HANDICAP CORNERAll scores for handicap purposes, including tournament scores, are subject to the application of Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). This mandatory procedure reduces high-hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential ability.
ESC is used when a player’s actual or most likely score exceeds a minimum number, based on the table below, for the player’s Course Handicap from the tees played.
Course Handicap Maximum Number on any Hole 9 Or Less Double Bogey 10 through 19 7 20 through 29 8 30 through 39 9 40 or more 10
Reminder: Please record your actual scores on your scorecard for events or daily play. If an adjustment needs to be made, please make a notation on the card for the Professional Staff to apply the ESC to your computer posted score.

BY ANDY MORRIS It is hard to believe that the holiday season is in front of us and the golfing season for 2017 is coming to an end. It seems like every season goes by faster and faster every year! Soon we will be looking at snow and cold weather and wishing for the days of warmth. Before we get to spring we will have to plow through our winter (no pun intended). Hopefully we don’t have to get the plow out too many times, but Mother Nature may have other plans and we will just have to wait and see what she brings us.
November brings in the holiday season, but it is also the time of year when we bid farewell to our seasonal staff. Many of our staff will return next season and some will find new positions during the winter. We are so fortunate to have a dedicated core group that return each season. It makes training and getting up to speed so much easier with experienced staff. We thank all of our team members for their efforts over the 2017 season. They do a great job of caring for the course and keeping it in good shape for our members. We know they will enjoy some well-deserved time off to relax and enjoy the upcoming holiday season.
In October we had our annual USGA visit from renowned agronomist Bob Vavrek. Bob has been visiting our course for 4 or 5 years now and always has some good insight to share. Our department uses his visit to confirm our agronomic plan and that we are offering solid course playability for our members. Bob’s visit provides us with the opportunity to make sure we are on the right track and doing things properly. Bob was very complimentary regarding our course conditions on this year’s visit. He is always impressed with the number of attendees that come out for his visit as the Greens Committee members, along
with some Board members, attend each year. We use the USGA as an adviser/consultant for many of the projects that take place on the course along with golf course architects and other consultants. Our relationship with the USGA dates back 15 years and has benefitted our course in numerous ways over that time period. It has been a good relationship to have and a great resource for our department.
As the winter approaches the question always comes up regarding recreational opportunities on the course during the winter. The Greens Committee and Golf Maintenance staff encourage members to enjoy some winter activities on the course. Please follow the winter guidelines that are included in this issue of Grandviews. We will use the flag system as we have in past years so look for the flag on #10 tee at the Pro Shop parking lot. A RED flag means conditions are not good and activities are prohibited on the course. A BLUE flag indicates conditions are good and activities are permitted on the course. Our flag color decisions are based on soil conditions and the amount of snow cover that is present. Please check flag color before enjoying winter activities on the course. Following the guidelines
for winter activities and the flag system helps us ensure minimal turf damage when spring rolls around. Your efforts are appreciated!
As the holidays quickly approach the clubhouse decorating efforts begin. Annette Hollaway and Roger Helton head up this effort annually and do a great job with it. The task of putting up and taking down all the decorations is daunting but always look lovely. I know we all appreciate their efforts to make the Club and its grounds festive for the holiday season.
The Golf Maintenance staff would like to wish all our members and their families a safe and joyous holiday season. Before long, we will be looking at the 2018 golfing season, but until then enjoy winter, the holidays and some family time.
See you on the course!

CLUB ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES
FIVE ESSENTIALS TO SAFE TRAINING As you start to prepare for your New Year’s Resolution – which often times includes a commitment to working out or increasing your activity in the New Year – take some time to consider these important fitness safeguards:
1. Proper hydration
2. Warm-up and cool-down
3. Exercise frequency, intensity, and duration
4. Proper breathing techniques
5. Exercise program variation
HYDRATION Water makes up roughly 60% of your body mass and has the important functions of regulating body temperature; acting as a solvent for glucose, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins; and providing a cushion and lubricant for joints. Generally speaking, water is the best fluid replacement for exercise durations of less than 1 hour, but sport drinks with sodium and glucose are recommended for durations greater than 1 hour. Some other factors regarding hydration to consider include:
• Perspiration rates can vary widely among individuals, but approximately 5 – 7 ml of fluid per kilogram body weight should be consumed at least four hours prior to exercise
• Weigh yourself before and after exercise and to replace each pound that is lost with 20 to 24 ounces of fluid/water
WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN Warm-up and cool-down activities help the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems adjust to a workout. If your workout or routine requires hitting a certain target heart rate, do a 5 – 15 minute warm-up to gradually increase your heart rate to the target level, and then cool down with another 5 – 15 minutes to reduce heart rate. Low-intensity stretching exercises should also be incorporated to help loosen stiff muscles and joints.
EXERCISE FREQUENCY, INTENSITY, AND DURATION The following are general guidelines for frequency, intensity, and duration of cardiovascular exercise within a workout:
• Frequency: 2 to 5 sessions per week• Intensity: 50% to 85% of heart rate reserve• Duration: 20 to 60 minutes
PROPER BREATHING TECHNIQUES It is important to know that it is not necessary to exercise in a state of breathlessness to achieve cardiovascular benefits. In general, breathing during your cardio exercises should be relaxed and regular (i.e. you should be able to carry on a casual conversation while exercising and breathing through both the nose and mouth).
EXERCISE PROGRAM VARIATION Exercise program variation is important for reducing the chances of overuse injuries. Though it is important to remember when introducing new exercises or activities to begin with a decreased intensity. For example, a person who has been riding a stationary bike for 30 minutes three times per week may not be able to immediately switch to treadmill running for 30 minutes three times per week. Instead, gradually acclimate to your new activity.
If you have any questions about your specific activity level or type of exercise, I am always here to help!

CLUB ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES
The following guidelines have been established for winter activities on the golf course for this upcoming winter. The Golf Maintenance Staff and the Greens Committee want our members to enjoy winter recreation on the course while minimizing impact on the turf. In order to protect the turf from damage, we ask that the following policy be followed.
If these guidelines are followed there will be minimal impact to the course and the membership will be able to enjoy winter recreation on the course. Utilizing designated areas and trails will help control and monitor use of the property
by non-members. As always, we appreciate your help by following the above rules for the winter season. Thank you.
Sledding will be allowed on #6 hill in front of the middle tee box, on #9 hill in front of the back tee box,
and on the driving range in front of the practice tee. Please keep sleds off of greens and tee areas.1.
Cross country skiing will be allowed around the perimeter of the course. Flags will be used
to mark the designated trails to be followed. DO NOT SKI OVER GREENS AND TEE AREAS.3.
A flag will be placed on #10 tee at the Pro Shop parking lot. If the flag is BLUE then sledding
and skiing are allowed. If the flag is RED then winter activities are prohibited. The amount of
snow cover and ground conditions will dictate if activities are allowed. You may also contact
the golf maintenance staff at 682-9432 or the clubhouse at 685-5943 to check current conditions.
4.
When sledding please use only flat bottom saucers,
sleds and toboggans. NO RUNNER SLEDS ALLOWED.
Runner sleds have the potential to cause serious turf damage.2.
5. No snow mobiles or four wheeling
is allowed on the course at any time.
