SHABBAT MORNINGTORAH STUDY WITH RABBI KLEINBegins Saturday, September 12 & 26 at 9:15AM

Via livestream at bit.ly/tttilivestreamingDeuteronomy and the Deuteronomy History

The Book of Deuteronomy is one of the great foundational books ofThe Bible. Not only does it bring the Five Books of Moses to a closewith the soaring final address of Moses, it also serves as the basisfor the history books that follow. This means that Deuteronomy represents a major voice in the formation of the Bible’s Primary History, the first eleven books that fashion the Bible’s sweeping narrative arc from the Creation of the World to the Babylonian Exile. We will explore the innovations of Deuteronomy and the ways inwhich … through historical review, exhortation, theology and law, careful reasoning, blessings and warnings … Deuteronomy shapedmuch of the telling of biblical history from the hopeful arrival in thePromised Land to sorrowful departure to exile in Babylonia. In addition, we will consider how Deuteronomy remained one of thestrong voices in the centuries-long understanding of Jewish historydown to the present day.

THE TEMPLE -TIFERETH ISRAEL page 4FROM THE RABBI’S STUDYI hope and pray that this message finds you healthy and well, that you are safe, and feeling the loveand support of relatives, friends, and members of our community. We have now lived through approximately six months of physical isolation because of the Coronavirus epidemic, and the hard-ships we have encountered and witnessed continue to exact a heavy toll. As we navigate throughthis period, let us remember: our highest priority at this time is the health and safety of our staff andmembers, families, neighbors, as well as all others in our greater community. Our entire, extraordi-nary clergy team joins me in wishing each and every one of you comfort, strength, and stamina aswe weather this storm, and in praying for our physical re-gathering in safety soon.

As I write to you today, I prepare for the month of Elul, the last month of the Jewish year. In our tradition, the month ofElul is one of self-evaluation and reflection, as well as anticipation of the upcoming year. It occurs to me that this hasbeen an especially dense, eventful year; there is so much for us to reflect upon and a great deal to hope for, to await. In 5779 (2019-2020), we have experienced great sacrifice and goodness, and at the same time also much division, antagonism, and fractiousness; heroic efforts and great advances in our scientific and medical communities, as well as much loss, uncertainty, vulnerability, and doubt; glimmers of cultural transformation and progress toward justice, as well as moments of disappointment and despair in the face of persistent and ugly expressions of anti-Semitism andracism. And so, in my Elul prayers, I start by focusing on my need for comfort, a sense of wholeness, hope, and peace. At this time, as I prepare for Elul, my thoughts turn to the words that conclude our Kaddish: “Oseh shalom bi-m’romav,hu ya’ase shalom aleinu…” – “May the Maker of peace on high make peace upon us and upon all Israel (and the world,)and let us say Amen.”

This last phrase of our Kaddish is remarkable for a number of reasons. To begin, this conclusion is uttered in Hebrew, while the rest of the Kaddish is recited in Aramaic. Further, this phrase contains two especially thought-provoking andchallenging biblical references:

The words Oseh shalom bi-m’romav (“Maker of peace on high”) occur only once in the Hebrew Bible. They arefound in the midst of the exchange between Job and his so-called friends. Following Job’s tragedies and losses, these“friends” insist on God’s justice and the need for Job to recognize his failings and sins, while Job repeatedly proclaimshis innocence. In chapter 25, Bildad the Hushite (one of those “friends”) ponders the human incapacity to graspGod’s justice, launching his speech with the words “Governance and terror are with the Divine, Maker of peace onhigh; Can God’s regiments be numbered? Upon whom would God’s light not shine? What is the human claim ofjustice toward God? What is the merit of anyone born of a woman?”

In short, this entire statement relates to God’s distance and the shortcomings of humanity. The very notion of “peace onhigh” stands in contrast to our inability to achieve peace among us, here, below. This statement expresses powerlessnessand awe in contemplation of the ungraspable Divine.

Then, we find the words “ya’ase shalom” (“May God make peace”). This phrase only occurs in Isaiah chapter 27.Here, Isaiah describes God’s vengeance against the world’s monstrosities and return to the protection of Israel. The relevant verses declare, “On that day, they shall sing of [God’s garden]: ‘Vineyard of Delight’; I, Source of Being, will keep watch over it, water it every moment, that no harm may befall it; I shall protect it night and day … oh ifGod should reinforce my stronghold, God will make peace to me, peace God will make to me; In the time to come,[the descendants of] Jacob will strike root, Israel shall flourish, and the world will fill with produce.”

And so, while the first citation (from the Book of Job) announces God’s distance and inaccessibility, the second (fromIsaiah), which immediately follows in the Kaddish, signifies our eternal hope and prayer for God’s presence and peaceon earth, and for Israel to flourish and, in turn, nourish the world. In a rabbinic stroke of genius, these disjointedstatements. representing the hopelessness of the human condition on the one hand and our eternal struggle and hopeon the other, are joined together. Perhaps this explains the great power and attraction of this formula, which we utter so often. If nothing else, these words signify our longing for an elusive sense of peace, wholeness, and comfort, as wellas our persistent visions of and strivings for peace, for the opportunity to reclaim the mantle of Israel, to nourish theworld, and to fill it with goodness. Let us not cease to utter these words. May the end of 5779 bring with it renewedhope, and may our prayers for peace, comfort, and wholeness echo and reverberate throughout this land. May we liveto become instruments of peace, and may we merit the fulfilment of Israel’s mission for our sakes and for the world’ssake. May we experience glimmers of redemption soon, in our own days. “Oseh shalom bi-m’romav hu ya’ase shalom, aleinu ve-al kol yisrael,” and let us together say: Amen.

– Rabbi Jonathan Cohen

Following high school, your children and grandchildren are going forth, like Abraham and Sarah, in search of the promise that is to be theirs. Keeping in touchwith them is a priority for The Temple whether they are leaving for college, takinga gap year or studying online from home. Maintaining a connection makes a difference in their lives. It’s important because they are in search mode, theiridentity is evolving, and they’re open to different ideas. This link provides a touch-stone for them to connect with the clergy, staff, and the congregation.

Everyone loves to receive packages and cards! Several times a year, we send some-thing to remind them that they are missed and that they are in our thoughts when they are away! If we have their addresses, they will receive High Holy Day greetings; holiday care packages; and special emails and notes from theclergy and staff. We have heard from recipients over the years how much these packages mean to them and motivatethem to do something Jewish even while away from home.

We depend on YOU to help keep the lines of communication open. Please help us remind them that The Temple remains a vital and important part of their lives wherever they go! Simply email your child’s contact information [email protected] or complete the online form at bit.ly/tttipathways and we’ll do the rest!

More of our neighbors are now struggling with food andhousing insecurity, educational inequity, mental health issues, and otherpoverty-related issues.

Nancy Mendez, Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of GreaterCleveland, will discuss poverty in our community: the myths, the symptoms, and some of its root causes. She will also describe United Way’s commitmentto find new solutions to disrupt poverty in Cleveland. A Q&A session will follow. Together, with Temple Museum Director Sue Koletsky, we will look at how the Torahscrolls are dressed for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Traditionally at The Temple for theHigh Holy Days, the Torahs are dressed in white Torah covers, with elegant silver breastplates(tas), silver finials (rimonium) and Torah pointers (yads).

These ritual objects from our Temple Museum collection have been collected over time. They include historicJewish Cultural Reconstruction pieces, rescued from Jewish communities during the Holocaust, as well as contemporary pieces created by Israeli artists. We will also examine pieces that have historic relevance to our Temple history.

This program will give us the opportunity to look at these extraordinary pieces in detail and further our appreciationof the beauty of this sacred time in Jewish life. Be sure to have your plate of honey and apples to add to the experience!

THE TEMPLE GARDENThe Temple Garden was built last year by the Social Action Committee in honor of RabbiCohen's installation. Located at the entrance to the Wald Outdoor Chapel, the visionfor the garden is to provide a small area to model healthy growing and eating and to involve Temple members of all ages in these efforts. However, because the Building is

closed, this year we decided instead to plant variousvegetables and herbs to see what would grow. Led byTemple member and master gardener, Eddie Levine, with help from Temple member TomJackson, we are currently growingitems such as tomatoes, zucchini, squash, eggplant, peppers, basil, sage, thyme, and chives. Eddie has started toharvest, and harvested items are beingdonated to our longtime partner, theKosher Food Pantry, for distribution totheir many families in need.
