Purpose of the New Role: Based within External Relations, the person appointed will be responsible for developing and delivering a wide range of digital, social media and online content, including video, blogs and social media content, in support of the two Digital Communications Managers. The post holder will be responsible for managing, monitoring and updating the University’s main social media channels, responding and engaging with students and prospective students as necessary. He or she will also assist in the development and delivery of digital communications and marketing activities for the University and will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Department and the wider University.

Main Responsibilities % time per year

1. To support the Digital Communications Managers by monitoring and updating the University’s main social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram, in support of the University’s communications and marketing strategy, responding to and engaging with students and prospective students and other key audiences as necessary.

To support the development of any new social media channels launched in response to audience needs and behaviours.

To develop and curate digital content to support marketing and communications campaigns and activity across a wide range of strategic areas, but with a particular focus on content for a youth audience.

To work with colleagues from External Relations, often as part of project teams, on digital content creation and the implementation of content plans in support of marketing and communications campaigns and activity, with a particular focus on student recruitment.

To support the development and implementation of an effective content marketing plan and strategy, ensuring that content is effectively repurposed

across different channels, including print, video, web and email.

To monitor campaign and digital activity and produce reports as required using campaign KPIs and metrics.

2. To film and edit video content for a range of purposes in support of the University’s communications and marketing strategy, under the direction and guidance of the Digital Engagement Manager and/or Digital Communications Managers.

To develop and create video content specifically for use on social media channels such as Vine and Instagram.

To help organise and support filming by agencies or colleagues in the Digital Team.

To manage and upload video content across a wide range of digital platforms, including mediaspace, the University’s video hosting platform, and YouTube.

To promote video content to a wider audience via social media, the University website and other relevant channels.

To monitor effectiveness of video content on channels such as YouTube and mediaspace, and produce reports as required.

3. To manage and support the development of the University’s blogs platform, setting up new blogs and liaising with users and the support company who administer the platform as necessary.

4. To support the use of user-generated content in video and social media.

This includes liaising with student bloggers, vloggers and video producers, as well as curating suitable content from social media and repurposing for different platforms, in liaison with colleagues in the Web Team and Marketing.

6. To undertake any other duties as required, relevant to the scope and scale of the role to support the wider External Relations team and University.

Examples include:

Attend away days and team meetings as required. Set up and manage hardcopy and electronic filing systems. Represent the University and faculty at open days, HE Fairs and other

recruitment related events. Partake in project groups as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential DesirableQualifications/ Education

HND (or equivalent) and work experience in a relevant role or a proven track record in a similar role.

Skills/Training Management and use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter, in a marketing and communications context for an organisation or

Excellent copywriting skills and strong proof reading skills, with specific experience in editing online content.

Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Ability to communicate with a range of people at different levels.

Strong presentation skills.

The ability to work to multiple, tight deadlines and flexibility to work out of hours as required.

Knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel.

Management System (CMS).

Project management skills.

Knowledge and understanding of Google Analytics.

Knowledge and understanding of search engine optimisation.

Experience Experience of uploading video, photography and other material to a range of online channels for promotional purposes.

Experience of editing video content using Adobe Premier Pro or similar editing software.

Experience of running and managing blogs and developing an audience for blog content.

Experience of producing digital content for marketing and communications campaigns or activity, preferably aimed at a youth audience.

Experience of liaising with external agencies.

Familiarity with large and complex organisations and/or the Higher Education sector.

Specific experience of managing and editing blogs on WordPress.

Decision Making

i) taken independently by the role holderThe post holder will carry out a range of digital marketing and communications activities including video production and management of social media. S/he must be able to prioritise his or her own workload, deal with problems and queries and work on his or her own initiative.

ii) taken in collaboration with othersThe post holder will work with a wide range of colleagues within the Department and beyond and will be expected to work collaboratively and positively with others, seeking direction from the Digital Engagement Manager and Digital Communications Managers as required.

iii) referred to the appropriate line manager (please name) by the role holderIssues relating to budgets, conflicting priorities or sensitive projects/queries will be referred to the Digital Engagement Manager or Digital Communications Managers.

Additional InformationThe role will help to ensure that the University’s digital strategy and its wider communications and marketing strategy are supported and delivered. The post holder will bring a range of digital and social media skills to the team and will support the University’s student recruitment and broader marketing and communications activities. S/he will bring energy, responsiveness and new ideas to the team and will be proactive in keeping up to date with new and emerging developments in the field.

This is a new and evolving area for the University and flexibility and a can-do approach will be important attributes for the post holder.

The nature of the role means it will involve occasional out of hours work and an element of flexibility is therefore essential.
