Year 9 students from Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form commemorated the sacrifice made by the young men of 1914 – 1918 on Friday 11 November 2011 at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery in Belgium.

The graves of 1500 unknown soldiers are at the cemetery and Harriet Mill and Charlie Robertson laid wreaths as Sally Reason and Charlotte Dimech read the immortal words from Lawrence Binyon.

“Thy shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, or the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them”

This was followed by a two minute silence.

Staff and students alike were moved by our Act of Remembrance.

A second trip also went to the Battlefields on Friday 18 November.

Year 9 Battlefields Trip

End of Term ArrangementsSchool will finish at 1.25pm on Friday 16 December. There will be an extended break from 10.45am - 11.25 am when food will be available in the canteen on the last day of term. Buses will depart at 1.30pm. School will open on Tuesday 3 January in the new year.

Alicia was nominated by four people, including her tutor, for her longstanding charity work. This includes donating £20 of her

own money to the Haiti earthquake, walking 18 km for the Farleigh Hospice Sunrise Walk – twice – walking the Braintree and Bocking Carnival 20 km sponsored walk to raise money for Little Havens Children’s Hospice and organising fundraising for BBC Children in Need. Phew! For many years Alicia has also gone door to door selling Braintree Carnival programmes and for the past few years has also helped the Salvation Army with the dinners for the homeless at Christmas. The first year she did this, there were two children who didn’t have any presents, so Alicia went home and got some of hers to give them. In June she held a tea party in her home which raised £40 for Farleigh House Hospice and during the summer holidays volunteered at the Tabor Centre for disabled people. Here, she helped in the kitchen and also in fun activities for the disabled visitors, whose ages ranged from 20-50. Alicia plans to give the £200 she wins from the Jack Petchey Foundation to the Notley Cheerleading Team so they can buy much needed costumes. There are fourteen students who are in the team, which is held in the Dance Studio on Mondays after school; supervised by Miss Knight.

Hannah West - A World Champion in our MidstHannah West, 10O, a former Jack Petchey Achievement Award winner, recently competed for England in the Karate World Championship in Malaysia. She did herself and her country proud by getting through to the quarter finals, just being beaten by France. This places her at 8th in the world for her age and class and is a true testament to her excellence in her sport. Her proud mother said ‘she gave her everything and fought so hard’. It’s incredible to think that one of our students is in the top echelon of karate athletes in the whole world! Many congratulations Hannah – you’re an inspiration and we wish you all the very best in your quest to be part of Team GB in Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics.

Ben was nominated by his mother for the two years he has spent attending an Activenture residential facility. He has regularly given up his school holidays – a week at a time – to be an ‘able-bodied buddy’ supporting disabled children in these residential holidays. He performs a range of duties from physical personal care to supporting in activities such as swimming, archery, drumming and craft sessions. These are things which disabled youngsters cannot experience and enjoy on their own, so people like Ben are vital in enabling them to do things other youngsters take for granted. Ben last went on an Activenture residential week in the summer holidays and has volunteered again for February 2012 half term. Ben wishes his Jack Petchey Foundation £200 to be given to the SLC Department in school. Mrs Readhead said that this will be wonderful, as it means her students will now be able to go on a fantastic visit to the London 2012 Olympic Park.

It cannot be denied that young people like Alicia and Ben are thoroughly deserving of receiving the Jack Petchey Achievement Award and we give them our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for all the work they will continue to do for others in future.

Summary of the Kirkland Rowell Opinion Survey Results from the Summer Term 2011Thank you to all parents who participated in the survey last summer. We have now had a chance to read and analyse the results and want to share the key outcomes.

There was a good response so the results are statistically reliable. A wealth of information has been provided and the overall picture painted of the school is a very positive one. We received the results in September, at the start of the new academic year, and they have been examined carefully by senior staff and governors and will form the basis of future action plans to improve the school further.

The Parent SurveyWe received 246 completed parent questionnaires representing a response rate of 24.6%. The parents gave a very good overall performance score of 73%, whilst among the parents whose children were not in their first year at the school 15% said the school had improved over the last year and only 9% thought that the school’s performance was worse. Of the parents of new students (Year 7 2010/11 and Year 12 2010/11) only 12% felt that the school had not lived up to their expectations whilst 17% said that the school was better than they expected it to be.

Parents indicated greatest satisfaction with school security, school facilities and truancy control. They were less satisfied with parents’ evenings and levels of homework and would like more regular feedback on their child’s progress. The happiness of their child and exam results also showed as a concern. Parents’ top priority for improvement is quality of teaching.

We have included below some quotes, both positive and negative, from the comments sections. We have chosen quotes to represent the main themes of the issues parents chose to comment about.

“We are very happy with NHS, and so is our son who is not a keen scholar! Thank you for your support. The newsletter is great, as is the Parent/Carer handbook and the website”

“As a parent I am very impressed with all aspects of the school. One element that is not covered in the survey is the pastoral care of students – we have found a high level of pastoral care both excellent and reassuring”

“It is a very good school and my son is very happy. I feel that their books don’t get marked enough and they don’t seem to get pulled up on sloppy writing and scruffy books”

“We chose Braintree Sixth Form because of our very positive experience of Notley High School. Given the ‘untested’ nature of the new sixth form it was quite a leap of faith, but it has proved to be an excellent choice”

“We would like more face to face opportunities with teachers, to be able to communicate more with them about our child”

“Overall we are generally happy with the school although our son is hardly ever set homework and it is very irregularly set. We don’t feel that he is being pushed hard enough in some subjects”

“Homework is not always marked very quickly and sometimes not at all!”

“Lunchtimes should be staggered to avoid overcrowding”

“Progress checks more often please”

“It is only a small point but I think it’s a waste of money to post ‘green’ attendance letters home. I appreciate the need to send via external post if the letter is not ‘green’…However, ‘green’ letters could be taken home by the child.”

The Student Survey829 completed questionnaires were returned from the students representing a response rate of 74%. (The survey took place after Year 11 and Year 13 had left in the summer term). The survey produced an excellent overall response score from the students, who gave good performance scores for most of the academic subjects and the chosen criteria. The students gave a good overall performance score (69%), whilst among the students who had been attending the school for over a year 34% said that the school had improved over the last year while only 20% thought the school’s performance was worse.

Students are most happy with school facilities, choice of subjects and careers advice. They are particularly happy with school meals and community spirit. They awarded the lowest score for computer access. Also getting lower scores were teaching quality and happiness of child (with specific references to exam pressures) and, in contradiction to being happy with school meals, there was concern about healthy lifestyle (diet). The students’ top priority for improvement (the same as the parents) is quality of teaching.

Students feel that teachers encourage them to do their best and they have a good chance of achieving the exam results they need.

The next Parent Forum is on Tuesday 29 November, 5 – 6pm in the school library. We will be discussing the survey as well as looking at Rewards and Awards. We warmly invite you to come along and make your views heard.

Work experience to begin with was a nightmare as the company I worked for had turned me down at the last minute. After a long two days over the phone with Miss Wilson, trying to sort out my work experience, she finally found a mobile restaurant in Colchester, but not all went well as I could not make arrangements to get to Colchester. So once again I phoned Miss Wilson, who unfortunately tells me I have to come into school in my uniform to sort it all out.

I finally got a job, after a long boring day by myself at school, at Christchurch Nursery on London Road. I met many wonderful people there who helped me through my days at the nursery and also complimented me on my strategies they now use in the nursery. Working at the nursery gave me a chance to think about what I really want to do. Finally leaving there I know now that being a Drama Teacher is what I can succeed in later on in life as long as I work hard and fight.

Work experience helped me to find who I am and want to be and I will succeed to get there.

Connor Clark 11E

Sometimes in life things don’t always go the way we want them to, but with the right attitude and enthusiasm we can often our experiences positive . The more we put into life the more we get out of it. Both Zak and Connor worked hard on their placements and gained a lot of knowledge from the experience.

Miss Wilson

My name is Zak Farmer I am in Tutor Group 11N. I went on work experience for two weeks with Greenfields Community Council, I decided not to go with a single tradesman because I wasn’t sure on what I wanted to do for my real job. For the duration of the two weeks I went with four tradesmen such as a carpenter, plumber, decorator and an electrician. I was allowed to go with two of them for one week, and the other week the other two. We split this up by seeing one of the workmen for two days and the other three days.

I had to be up at 7am in the morning to be ready for 8am when I was picked up to do an 8 hour day, they also picked me up from my house and dropped me off home at 4pm which is very good because I didn’t have to worry about transport.

I enjoyed my work experience because I was with really nice people that took part of their time to teach me what to do for the future if I decided to choose their trade. I learnt a number of things like fixing doors, toilets, pipes and a number of different things.

I would recommend this work experience placement to anybody that was interested in being a tradesman.

Zak Farmer 11N

Year 11 Work Experience 2011This year work experience took place over two weeks from 10 – 21 October. It was another successful experience for many of the Year 11 students, who learnt a lot about working life. Work experience is an important part of our students experience as it gives them an insight into possible careers they may want to go into or just merely opens their eyes to the expectations of an employer. I asked Zak Farmer 11N and Connor Clark 11E to write a piece on their own personal experiences.

I’m an Olympics Games Maker Volunteer

I am one in seventy thousand! Out of a quarter of a million applicants I was asked to attend an interview in the London ExCel Centre last May. This week I found out I was successful and was offered a volunteers role of Driver Team Leader- I’ll be “leading a team of drivers, providing transport to a range of accredited spectators”- I wonder who they will be and will I recognise any of them?

Not sure of the exact nature of the role as it hasn’t been published yet, but I’m guessing it may not be actual driving. But I really hope I will be getting out and about driving at some point through London, particularly as I have read that the Olympic transport cars will be BMW’s and there will be some interesting arrangements such as traffic controlling measures, temporary games lanes and traffic lights in favour of the driver!

So, it looks like our holidays are set for next year late July to mid-August and it’s in Stratford, where I was born!

Nothing more to report yet, but early training will be required so I’ll keep you in touch with what happens as it happens.

Meet our New Language AssistantsThis year we are pleased to have two new Language Assistants in the MFL Department at Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form: Solene Jaillot in French and Saioa Fraile De Alda in Spanish.

Their role is very important as they contribute to further improving students results as well as increasing the international dimension of the school. They enthuse the students further and their work consists of conversation with a small group of students ensuring that all students regularly practice their language actively. They are both very pleased with the students’ work and the school’s warm welcome. As well as their work with the students during the school day, they also help with the Asset Club afterschool and KS4 revision session after school and lunchtime. If students haven’t met them yet and would like to show off their language skills come and talk to them at lunchtime.

My name is Solene Jaillot and I am working as a French Assistant in Notley High School for the academic year 2011/2012.

I come from Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region, situated in the centre of France. I recently had my degree in English with the option of FLE (French as foreign language). I wanted for long time to become a French teacher in England. I have always liked the UK and always knew I would live there.

Working in Notley High and the Sixth Form College is a great experience and after a month here, I am even more convinced to become a teacher. The school is amazing. The staff members and the pupils are very friendly. I am impressed by the diversity of the subjects and activities such as dance, cooking and sewing class.

In France, as far as I can remember, my high school is very different from here: we don’t wear uniforms; we can wear whatever we like. We have a lot of homework to do in any subjects. We start very early at 7:45am and finish very late around 5:00 or 6:00pm. It happened that I finished at 7:00pm!

The language classes are very dynamic and entertaining. Classes in France tended to be a bit too formal. Lunch time is very different from my country. In France, everything stops at noon and everyone has lunch during an hour or two. Here, it’s bit later and everyone grabs a snack and doesn’t always take time to relax before going back to work.

When I started to work with students in the school , I was really shy but teachers were there to explain my work and I began to be more comfortable with my pupils. Now I am getting more confident and really enjoy this job.

Hello everybody!

I’m Saioa, the new Spanish Assistant.

I was born in Vitoria, a city located in the north of Spain. We are hard-working, intelligent, good-looking and really modest people! (lol)

I’ve been living in England for a month and I’m finding it a nice experience.

Nowadays I help students with their Spanish lessons in Notley High School and Sixth Form and I’m so happy with them because they show real interest on learning and improving their language skills.

The staff is kind and supportive and I’m proud of being part of it.

I’m looking forward to discovering more about this country and people, who have been so friendly with me so far. Thank you!

Year 11 News

Recently, Year 11 went away on work experience placements for two weeks. The majority of placements were successful and allowed students to get an insight into working life and life outside of school. From office work to practical roles, every student was given the opportunity to learn new skills and came away with an increased amount of knowledge in a certain area of work.

Since returning from the half term break, Year 11s have been busy revising for mock exams and focusing on working towards predicted GCSE grades. We wish everyone the best of luck in their exams and hope to receive some good results.

Also since half term, there have been some changes to the lunchtime routine in the school. Previously, all students piled into the canteen at 1.25pm. To improve the crowds and congestion at lunchtimes, a new schedule has come into place where Key Stage 3 students leave lessons for lunch at 1.25pm with Key Stage 4 following 10 minutes later. This is then reversed during the following week of the two-week timetable cycle. Although this has improved the overcrowding that occurs in the canteen, it hasn’t proved to be popular with all students and will be evaluated later in the term. This evaluation will be supported by Student Voice to ensure that both staff and students are able to come to arrangement that is suitable for everyone.

Finally, just to remind Year 11 students to apply for their preferred sixth forms and colleges soon! It is always a good idea to apply to more than one in case you change your mind. Check websites for details on open evenings and prospectuses.

Ivan Wins Christmas Art Competition PrizeIvan Shipulin a Year 12 Art AS student has won a prize in a local art competition. The Hawthorns Retirement Home, in Braintree, invited students from local schools and colleges to design a Christmas card for their residents. Ms Monro took a group of Year 11 and 12 Art students to visit The Hawthorns. Students were given a tour of the home and enjoyed discussing design ideas with the residents. Our students were praised for the high standard of their entries Ivan discusses ideas for his winning design

Tiny Giants bring Second Chance to Notley High SchoolOn Thursday 13 November, a theatre company visited Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form to deliver a performance of a road safety play called ‘Second Chance’. The play was performed by the Tiny Giants Theatre in Education Company in our Braintree Arts Theatre to Year 7. It dealt with issues regarding road safety, as well as dealing with a multitude of issues that students face as they enter secondary school. The students found the experience really rewarding. Although the performance itself was very funny, there was a serious message that was delivered that all students took on board.

Bradley Dolan, in 7N, had this to say: “The play was really fun but very sad at the end. The message was to be careful and to not play near the road. They taught us that we must be very careful when we walk home from school, as well as when we go out.”

Thank you to Mrs Edge for arranging this and to Mr Pickard for allowing the theatre company to use the Braintree Arts Theatre.

Netball Teams

Year 7This year so far netball has had its ups and downs. The Year 7 uptake was fantastic and we have got a number of excellent players. They have already had a successful netball season with winning all their league matches so far and only losing one cup game. They have another cup game coming up soon and hopefully they can add another success to their already fantastic results. Maisie King has demonstrated a very high level of skill with superb movement and passing. Heidi Ryman, Millie Fowler and Georgia Warren have all shown that they are a hard defence to get past. Jodie Douse has so much energy her opponents find it hard to keep up with her. Tia Frances has been the most improved player and has been keen to attend all training sessions. Keep up the hard work girls and we should find ourselves in the final!

Year 8The Year 8s have had a few games and their attendance to netball last year was fantastic. They have not had a successful year with their games but have demonstrated commitment, determination and have never given up. They should all continue to attend Netball Club to improve their skills further and consider joining Braintree Netball Club outside of school.

Year 9Year 9 have struggled to get a team together this year. We have the committed trio of Georgia Andrews, Ella Hedges and Megan Halfacre who work hard and have shown great improvement over their time at Notley. We need more Year 9s to help them and come along to training so we can continue to improve the Year 9 team.

Year 10Year 10s are a very good team but due to cancellations have not been able to demonstrate this skill against many teams this year. They are a committed team who enjoy the social side of belonging to a team as well as the achievement gained from performing. They should continue to come along to training to help improve their skills further.

Notley High School PE Results Year 11Year 11s are another good team and demonstrated this against Maltings Academy when they drew even though they played with only 6 players. Even though they are busy with working hard in their final year they are always keen to play in matches whenever they can. Hannah Cureton has shown amazing commitment to netball and should continue to help improve her skills and experience of netball.

Learning to SailIn October, twelve Notley students aged between 12 & 16 were lucky enough to be taught to sail by the Cirdan Sailing Trust sponsored by The Voyage of Discovery Fund. We sailed on an old Baltic Trader from Ipswich, visiting various East Coast marinas and anchorages. Students took charge of the ship under the careful eye of the skipper and crew. They were responsible for putting up sails, steering the boat, scrubbing the decks, preparing and cooking meals as well as having the opportunity to climb the rigging and row the tender. We also had a guided tour of the lifeboat station in Harwich which was very interesting. We all had a wonderful time while learning lots of new skills and the students were a credit to Notley. See page 11 for Martin Bond’s account of the trip.

NOTLEY HIGH SCHOOL & BRAINTREE SIXTH FORM

SEVERE WEATHER PROCEDURES (FROM NOVEMBER 2011)

If it is deemed that there is severe weather, the following severe weather procedures will apply.

To keep up-to-date with the latest announcements staff, parents/carers and students should check:

- Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form website- Braintree Sixth Form website- Text messages issued by Schoolcomms- BBC Essex Radio and website

(103.5 and 95.3FM, 729, 765 and 1530MW, DAB digital or via the BBC iPlayer)- NHS/BSF email accounts (staff and students)

Buses pick-up times will be one hour later than their normal times.

Students that walk to school or travel to school by car should aim to arrive by 9.30am.

For students that arrive before 9.30am:

- Students in Years 7-11 should go straight to the canteen and wait there until they are told to move to registration at 9.30am.

- Students in Year 12-13 should go straight to Café6 or the Common Room. They should then go to Period 2 at 9.45am.

Any public examinations will start at 9.30am (instead of 9.00am). Afternoon examinations will run at their published times.

Staff should arrive from the normal time if it is safe to do so, and supervise students that arrive before 9.30am.

To maintain student safety, we will be insisting that students remain inside the building throughout the day, with the only times where they will need to go outside the building being when they move to areas at lesson changeover.

As ever a decision about sending students to school in difficult weather conditions must be made by each individual family, as local conditions can vary considerably. Students should think carefully about their footwear to and from school and wear the most appropriate footwear they have to help them manage on very slippery paths local to the school. Students should then change into their normal school footwear on arrival. Students should also ensure that they are warm, wearing an appropriate coat, hat and gloves.

Staff should sign in at the Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form campus reception on arrival. Partnership staff from other schools should also sign in at the campus reception on arrival.

Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form will finish at the normal time – 3.15pm.

There will be no after school lessons/clubs/detentions/meetings or late transport for students in Years 7-11.

There will be no period 6 or enrichment activities beyond 3.15pm for Braintree Sixth Form students.

In the event of worsening weather conditions during the school day necessitating closure, we will give as much notice as possible and communicate this decision by the modes of communication listed above. Any students in Years 7-11 that have

problems getting home should report to the canteen. Any sixth form students that

have problems getting home should report to Café6. The senior leadership team

will work together to ensure that these students get home safely. We will not allow

students to leave the site unless we are confident that parents/carers are aware and

approve of arrangements.

Further information: School Closure

The decision to close Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form rests with the Headteacher and the senior leadership team. The school will only be closed as a last resort eg travelling becoming hazardous, or if the site is not safe for students and staff.

If school is closed, students in Years 7-11 should ensure all homework is up-to-date for when they return to school. Some teachers will wish to contact students via email to set work if it is appropriate to do so. If a school closure period lasts more than three school days, all teaching staff will set work via email/VLE from the fourth closure day.

If Braintree Sixth Form is closed, sixth form teaching staff will set work for students and send details via email/VLE from the first closure day.

If the school is closed, public examinations will still take place for students that are able to travel to Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form. Morning examinations will start at 9.30am (instead of 9.00am) and afternoon examinations will run at their published times. Any exceptions to this would be clearly communicated via the Notley High School & Braintree Sixth Form websites.

Internal examinations will be re-scheduled for when school is open again.

Once a decision has been made to re-open after a closure period due to severe weather, this information will be given using the communication methods listed above.



On Monday we left school and we went to Ipswich then we loaded Queen Galadriel up with our luggage and food.

On Tuesday we set off out of Ipswich lock and we went under the Orwell Bridge. Chantelle and I thought we

were going to hit the Orwell Bridge!

The sea was rough; we got wet by the sea water. We stopped for the night but Jordan had another idea …. that was to crack his head open! He went to the Colchester Hos pital and had his head glued.

On Wednesday it was Pirate Day.

I climbed the rigging to the crow’s nest and I went to the top and then I went on the tender (a little boat).

On Thursday we could not sail straight in to the wind but we done tacking for hours. At 11:30pm we got in to our gear and went up to the deck and did night sailing until 2:00am.

On Friday we packed up our stuff and unloaded Queen Galadriel and

we did a deep clean up. Me and James had to clean the head (that is the toilets) and we had to get it inspected then we had to go up to the deck and we scrubbed the deck then we came home.

Over 600 visitors attended Braintree Sixth Form’s annual Open Evening on Thursday 10 November.

The event provided prospective students and their families with the chance to view the Sixth Form building and its facilities. Visitors were able to meet with staff and students who are currently studying for either their AS/A Levels or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at the Sixth Form.

Kate Stubbs, Co-Director of the Sixth Form, said this year’s Open Evening had been a great success:

“It’s great to see that so many students are interested in attending the Sixth Form. We currently have students from 32 different secondary schools, including a number from Europe so it’s a really good mix”.

Students entertained guests throughout the evening with live music and drama performances, and a presentation was given by senior staff in the theatre to welcome guests to the Sixth Form.

The six-million pound Sixth Form building opened in 2009 with the aim of increasing the range of high quality learning opportunities in the Braintree area. It aims to produce confident, independent, internationally minded and socially engaged young people who aim to flourish at university, in employment and throughout their lives.

Progression for Braintree Sixth Form students is highly successful with 92%

Social Science ChallengeCongratulations to the group of Sixth Form students who have been awarded second prize in the Social Sciences Challenge, which was held at the University of Essex. The group won £100 worth of Amazon vouchers.Yr 13 students Emily Ferris, Charlotte Foy, Oli Green, Matt Mayes and Paul Quance took part. There were three rounds of questions - Britain in 2011, General Knowledge and the News and questions from each group.

Miss Everitt accompanied the group: “The students prepared really well before the day and performed excellently! They all deserve to be very proud of themselves, and congratulations on being awarded their £100 prize.”

Asha Mistry, a Year 12 Student, took part in Thursday’s Open Evening: “I chose Braintree Sixth Form because it has a really good reputation, it s facilities are modern and it has a very friendly atmosphere. The Open Evening means new students can come and experience this too.

After I finish my A Levels, I hope to go on to study either Foundation Dentistry or Law at University. I feel

my time at Braintree Sixth Form will help me fulfil this.”

Braintree Sixth Form offers students two programmes of study – AS/A Levels and the IB Diploma. The IB Diploma is a two year programme which allows students to continue with a broad curriculum. It combines a programme of six academic subjects with a range of activities to develop personal and study skills.
