Notes from Fr. John St. Kieran Catholic Church Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 23, 2020 Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy. — Leviticus 19:2b T his week we celebrate the Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time. In the Book of Leviticus God speaks to Moses and tells him to “Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy”. It goes on to describe how we should treat our brothers and sisters. We are taught to think of them as we would our own brothers and sisters. Or even easier we are to treat each other as we would like to be treated. God tells us to payback in anger, because then we also are stuck in sin. Richard Rohr writes in his book, "The Universal Christ" that a basic truth we have forgotten is that Christ is present in everyone we meet. This means those we like, and those we don’t like. Those we know and those we don’t know. Those who believe as we do, and those who do not believe as we do. If we remember this truth and believe God became flesh for us, Richard Rohr believes the flesh God took on is all of ours. We need to see Christ in everyone we meet. Some days I believe people walk away from Christ because it is hard if we take his teachings to heart. This week as we begin our Lenten journey let’s make an effort to see Christ in everyone we meet. This Wednesday we begin our celebration of the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. At St. Agnes we will have a 9 AM and a 7 PM mass. We will also have a noon prayer service as well. Ashes will be distributed at all three services. At St. Kieran we will have mass at 8 AM and 7 PM. Again, ashes will be distributed at both masses. When we receive the ashes on our foreheads it is not only a sign of our mortality, but also a sign that we are followers of Christ. It is an outward symbol for all the world to see. Do we live up to that symbol as followers of Jesus? We are encouraged to use the season of Lent as a time to move closer to the Christ who has called us by loving God and our neighbor. Please be sure to take a bulletin home to see the prayer experiences offered at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Every year we look at the prayer services we offer and try to offer experiences that people will find fulfilling. We also end events that do not get participation. By combining some services like Stations of the Cross we are able to bring more people together as we celebrate our Lenten traditions. That's why it is important to check the bulletin for our services. On Thursday, March 5, we will celebrate evening prayer at St. Kieran with the communities of St. Kieran, St. Agnes, and St. Ireneaus. This will include both prayer and song. These times of joint prayer are a great way to prepare us for the Renew My Church process that will begin in the spring. We are reminded that our church, our faith is bigger than any building. We are the church and no matter where we gather God is present. I also encourage you to take some quiet time in prayer in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel at St. Agnes. From eight in the morning until eight in the evening people gather before the Blessed Sacrament. They bring with them their joy, sadness, hopes and fears and lay them before our loving God. Please consider taking some time this Lent for adoration. The Women of our parishes are also invited to a special time of time and reflection at our Women’s Welcome Retreat. By sharing their faith, prayer, and hospitality the women are strengthened in their journey with Christ. This two-day retreat will be held at St. Kieran and is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday March 14th and 15th. Please see the bulletin to sign up. Finally, before we begin our season of Lent the St. Kieran Women’s Club invites everyone to join them in their Fat Tuesday Potluck Dinner. It begins at 6 PM in Crawford Hall (the gym). Cost is $5 per person plus a dish to share. See you there.

Knights Of Columbus

Update 2/2020

The Knights of Columbus proudly presents our new library in the lobby of St. Kieran to help build the faith and our Domestic Church through solid Catholic teachings. A great reminder to our catechism taught to us years ago. All the books are free for all who come to our church. A donation box, suggested by a few parishioners, will be mounted on the side of the library along with the Comfort Crosses so everything is in one place.

Let's pay tribute to four of our Knights that advanced their degrees to 2nd & 3rd last Friday at St. Anthony in Frankfort: Todd Zarlengo, John Zarlengo, Enzo Popolla and Oscar Gonzalez. Also, this past Saturday, John Zarlengo, Tom Willett, William Bowman, and Anthony Rozic advanced to their 4th degree in Lisle. Congrats to all of you.

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal

Come, follow me… and heal our world

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The Annual Catholic Appeal theme, “Come, follow me… and heal our world,” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to fol-low Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our parish and our archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference! All parishes communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools, and ministries to deliver needed services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

RITE OF SENDING AND ELECTION FOR THE RCIA

On March 1, the RCIA will be celebrating the Rite of Sending and Rite of Election. The Rite of Election or enrollment of names, is the recognition of God’s choice to call the Catechumens (those to be baptized) and the Candidates for Initiation into the Church. This brings them closer to The Rite of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. These rites usually coincide with the First Sunday of Lent. The Rite of Sending is usually done at their home parish, where they sign the Book of the Elect to bring to Holy Name Cathedral. This year Bishop Manz will be the celebrant at the Rite of Election, on Sunday, March 1 at 2:30 PM. The Rite of Sending will be celebrated at St. Kieran this year. As a parish of “Renew my Church” we celebrate with St. Kieran, St. Agnes and St. Irenaeus.

We would like to introduce our Candidates and Catechumens for this year:

ST. AGNES

Ian Arreola-Lee Juan Carlos Ortiz

Fatima Moncerrat Topete Armando Garcia Moreno

ST. IRENAEUS

Dave Zuniga

ST. KIERAN Taliah Marie Alexander

Jordan Dean Muka

Please pray and celebrate all our Candidates from all three parishes

as they move closer to Easter.
