Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Years 12 & 13 Parents’ Evening - We were delighted to welcome the parents and students from Years 12 and 13 last night for
their crucial parents’ evening. The feedback was excellent and it was clear that the vast majority of parents are delighted with
the progress their sons and daughters are making. The next few months are crucial for the students and it is really important
that students act on the feedback given.
Cycling to School - Following several concerns from local residents, we are reviewing our cycling to school policy. Next
week we are meeting the students who cycle to school and will write to parents to explain the new policy.
Year 10 Football - Good luck to the Year 10 football team who play Little Heath School from Reading in the final 16 of the
English Schools’ Cup.
I hope you have a great weekend.
Best wishes, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Fact
1842-45 were
Newman’s
‘wilderness’ years,
out of the public
eye, secluded in
prayer and study.
Weekly Prayer
Almighty God, who gives strength to the weak and upholds those who might fall, give me the
courage to do what is right for those that trust in you have no need to fear. As we gather
here in the name of Jesus may we be strengthened to live in his name too. We ask this
through Christ our Lord. , Amen
Camp America
Camp America is something I have always wanted to do. When I started university, I decided that it
was the right time for me to apply. It was a long process which began in October of last year but 4
months on, I have been accepted and placed at a camp in Virginia, America. I am so excited for the
experiences this coming summer will hold and I am so grateful to have been given the chance to spend 3 months working in
another country. I would highly recommend the process to anybody, it is the opportunity of a lifetime.

helped to lead activities, reflections,
games and prayer during the day.
Students reflected upon the gifts and
fruits of the Holy Spirit, spent time as
theologians learned more about the
creed and their faith. Thank you to

Keeping Plant Disease at Bay –
The Elizabeth Creak Charitable Trust Public Science Evening
How is Warwick addressing local and global food security?
Is the UK’s favourite fruit in danger?
How can microbes help plants grow and survive?
Why are our woodlands under threat?
The School of Life Sciences is proud to host another free Public Science evening on the 7th February 2017. Our ability to grow plants
productively is under severe and increasing threat from climate change. Increasing global temperatures could decrease the amount of food
on our shelves, leading to global food shortages of our favourite products such as beans. These rising temperatures may also lead to the
spread of harmful plant diseases that destroy our crops and threaten farmer’s livelihoods. Discover how our research, which covers weeds
and crops through to trees and even includes bananas, strives to understand and mitigate these threats to ensure that we can feed ourselves
in the future. Interesting demonstrations and talks will explain how we keep our food secure via pest management, pollinators, and whole
plant imaging. The evening will be hosted by Professor Murray Grant who took up the role of Elizabeth Creak Chair in Food Security in June
2016. Professor Grant’s post has been funded by The Elizabeth Creak Charitable Trust, which was established in memory of Elizabeth
Creak - a highly capable and well respected farmer who brought many creative ideas to the world of farming.
Professor Murray Grant said “Warwick Crop Centre based at Wellesbourne, close to the original farm of Elizabeth Creak, provides the
unique ability for translating findings from the lab into the field.”
Registration to attend is now open. All are welcome, and we are especially keen to see alumni and members of the local community attend.
This event follows on from our previous highly successful Public Science events ‘A healthy brain for a healthy life’, ‘Getting to grips with
antibiotic resistance’ and ‘The Fly Room’. This event is free to attend and will start at 18:00 and end at 20:00.
The programme shall be as follows:
18:00-18:05 - Welcome address. – Prof Christine Ennew, Provost
18:05-18:30 - Tackling Food Security - how can we mitigate crop losses from plant pathogens? – Prof Murray Grant
18:30-18:55 - Demos/Posters/Lab Tours
18:55-19:10 - The role of friendly microbes and insects in sustainable agriculture – Dr Miriam Gifford
19:10-19:35 - Demos/Posters/Lab Tours
