The Naming of the Animals
The Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate.’ So from the soil the Lord God fashioned all the wild
beasts and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call
them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it.
The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild beasts. But no helpmate
suitable for man was found for him.

The Messiah Will Heal
And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried.
But we, we thought of him as someone punished, struck by God, and brought low.
Yet he was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins.
On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.

The Healing of the Paralysed Man
Jesus got in the boat, crossed the water and came to his own town. Then some people appeared,
bringing him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, my child, your sins are forgiven.’
And at this some scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ Knowing what was in their minds Jesus said, ‘Why do you have such wicked
thoughts in your hearts?

The Healing of the Paralysed Man
Now, which of these is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralytic – ‘get up, and pick up your bed and go off home.’
And the man got up and went home.
A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised God for giving such
power to men.

Rest for your Souls
Jesus exclaimed, ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.
Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’

The Beatitudes
Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples.
Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
‘How happy are the poor in spirit;theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Happy the gentle:they shall have the earth for their heritage.
Happy those who mourn:they shall be comforted.
Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:they shall be satisfied.

Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Happy are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak
all kinds of calumny against you on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven:
this is how they persecuted the prophets before you. ‘

The Mystical Body of Christ
God has arranged the body so that more dignity is given to the parts which are without it,
and so that there may not be disagreements inside the body,
but that each part may be equally concerned for all the others.
If one part is hurt, all parts are hurt with it.If one part is given special honour, all parts enjoy it.
Now you together are Christ’s body; but each of you is a different part of it.

Six Days of Creation and the Sabbath
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep,
and God’s spirit hovered over the water.
God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. God saw that light was good,
and God divided light from darkness. God called light ‘day’, and darkness he called ‘night.’
Evening came and morning came: the first day.
The second day of creation
God said, ‘Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in two.’ And so it was. God made the vault, and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault.
God called the vault ‘heaven.’ Evening came and morning came: the second day.

The third day of creation
God said, ‘Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear.’ And so it was.
God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good.
God said, ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees bearing fruit
with their seed inside, on the earth.’ And so it was. The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seed
in their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several kinds.
God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came: the third day.

The fourth day of creation
God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day from night, and let them indicate festivals,
days and years. Let them be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.’
And so it was. God made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day,
the smaller light to govern the night, and the stars. God set them in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth,
to govern the day and the night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good.
Evening came and morning came: the fourth day.

God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas;
and let the birds multiply upon the earth.’ Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.

The Parable of the Talents
Jesus spoke this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of Heaven is like a man on his way
abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion
to his ability. Then he set out.‘The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

‘Last came forward the man who had the one talent. “Sir,” said he “I had heard you were a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering
where you have not scattered; so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is;

Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. John tried to dissuade him. ‘It is I who need baptism from you’ he said ‘and yet you come to me!’ But Jesus replied, ‘Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that righteousness demands.’ At
this, John gave in to him.As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the
water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and

Healing on the Sabbath
He moved on from there and went to their synagogue, and a man was there who had a
withered hand. They asked him, ‘Is it against the law to cure a man on the sabbath day?’ hoping for
something to use against him. But he said to them, ‘If any one of you here had only one sheep and it fell down a hole on the sabbath day, would he not get hold of it and lift it out? Now a man is far more
important than a sheep, so it follows that it is permitted to do good on the sabbath day. Then he
said to the man, ‘Stretch out you hand’. He stretched it out and his hand was better, as sound

The healing of the paralysed man
Jesus got in the boat, crossed the water and came to his own town. Then some people appeared,

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, my child, your sins are forgiven.’ And at this some scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ Knowing what was in their minds
Jesus said, ‘Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts?

Addressing the people and his disciples Jesus said, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do what they tell you

market squares and having people call them Rabbi

Paul’s hymn to love
Be ambitious for the higher gifts. And I am going to show you a way that is better than any of them.
Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude
or selfish; it does not take offence, and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever
comes.Love does not come to an end. But if there are gifts
of prophecy, the time will come when they must fail; or the gift of languages, it will not continue for ever; and knowledge – for this, too, the time will
come when it must fail.

imperfect things will disappear. When I was a child, I used to talk like a child, and think like a child, and argue like a child, but now I am a man, all childish ways are put behind me. Now we are seeing a dim reflection in a mirror; but then we shall be seeing
face to face. The knowledge that I have now is imperfect; but then I
shall know as fully as I am known.
