First Sunday of Advent (Lect. 1—Year A)
Advent has begun. We look forward to the coming of our Lord as a baby at Christmas. But today we get a bracing reminder that he will come in a different way at the end of the time. Advent urges us to prepare for both comings. It is one thing to prepare for an event that falls on the same date every year. It is quite another to
prepare for something whose timing is totally uncertain. Jesus warns his disciples, going so far as to compare himself to a thief, breaking into homes in the middle of the night. In fact, this image captures a third way that we should prepare. We should prepare for Jesus coming into our hearts and changing our lives, changing our lives as Isaiah prophesies and Paul preaches. Jesus is like a thief, taking away our swords and spears, our rivalries and jealousies, whatever stands between us and our neighbor. This Advent, while preparing for the baby Jesus and the judge, let us prepare also for the thief Jesus, who can remove whatever prevents us from loving God and loving our neighbor with all our heart.
What needs to be removed from your heart to prepare a home for Jesus? Seasonal Missalette

On December 7 and 8 our second collection will be for the Retirement Fund for Religious. The Religious sisters, brothers and priests rely on your generous contribution. Now that you are a bit more acquainted with some of our SND faces you realize that many of our sisters and brothers are in retirement. They have worked many long years in God’s service. In the years
past their stipends were minimal and so now their benefits from social security do not adequately cover their expenses. Can you help with a few dollars in this second collection? A little bit will go a long way and we promise an abundance of prayers for your generosity. Sister Pat Sipan, SND.
What is the theology of Reconciliation since I made my “First Confession”? We have a session exploring the cleansing
effect of absolution: God’s forgiving us. Come and update your appreciation for this sacrament. Parents who wish to
prepare their child for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be attending this meeting in the church on Tuesday, Dec
10 We begin at 6:45-and conclude by 8:00.
It has been a few years that our parish established a building committee to
evaluate, discuss and advice on what refers to our current church and parish
center buildings. Since before I came to the parish the committee has worked
on plans to expand our church building. The project did not consider so much
as adding to the sitting capacity of our present building, but on building a
chapel connected to the building, as well as a narthex, or vestibule, with a new priest’s sacristy and working sacristy
for ushers and servers. The plan also included bathrooms and a gift shop for religious articles. With the addition, the
interior of our church would be renovated and upgraded. The parking lot was also included, with the possibility of
including the woods on the back of our church property. This would be negotiated with the diocese since that track of
land belongs to the diocese of Orlando.
This past summer we had a rough estimate on the costs involved and how to come up with the necessary funds. After
seeing that the amount needed is beyond both our savings and our credit line with the diocese, the only way would be
to enter into a capital campaign. Even with a capital campaign it would take some time to have all the funds needed.
I have no doubt that it is possible to achieve that. However, there are several maintenance issues concerning our
buildings, both on the exterior as well as the interior, that cannot wait much longer. So it was decided that the
addition to the present building will have to wait a little longer. We will take care of the necessary maintenance to
preserve what we already have. Some examples of what is needed: a new roof in the church building and part of the
parish center, painting both the exterior and interior, changing the carpet and possibly redesigning the altar area,
improving our sound system, maintaining the parking lot and grounds, updating electrical; these are some of the work
that will take place in the next few months. For these there will be no capital campaign. We will use the funds we
have, and all parishioners will know when we need funds for specific projects.
In September 2018, Bishop Noonan approved our request to stablish an account for funding the depreciation of our
structures, so we can proactively address the needs of our aging physical plants. This is a priority in the diocese and
the collection/donations received are exempt from Our Catholic Appeal assessment. Since inception, we have accrued
nearly $100,000 in our Funded Depreciation Saving account. With the OCA exemption, our parish has realized a saving
of over $18,000. I want to thank those who are contributing using their envelopes as well as online giving or through
our monthly second collection designated for this purpose. These funds will be the first used on repairs and
maintenance.
As the end of the year approaches and we reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon us and our families,
we have the opportunity of giving back in the form of charitable contributions. There are many good causes and if you
consider Resurrection Catholic Church there are a few ways you can designate your contribution:
Offertory: funds used to support the day to day operation of the parish
Funded Depreciation Reserve: funds set aside to build the stability or the parish and allows our parish to proactively
address physical repairs and maintenance of the property.
SVDP: the Society of Saint Vince the Paul conference at Resurrection is a Christian volunteers organization which
works with the poor and disadvantaged people in West orange County.
“your year-end gift could reduce your income taxes while providing meaningful support to Resurrection Church. As
Always, work closely with your tax and legal advisors to determine how any particular strategy will affect your overall
tax situation. As you know, giving is about much more than tax savings. Your charitable gifts make a significant
difference in what we are able to accomplish here at Resurrection”.
