Breivik’s Terror: Was It a Deep Event?

The most surprising aspect of the recentunexpected terrorist violence in Norway is that,in retrospect, it is not surprising. Our revivedhopes after the end of the Cold War, that wemight finally be emerging into a world ofdiminishing bloodshed, have been abundantlydisabused. Events of seemingly randomirrational violence, such as that which soshocked us when President Kennedy wasassassinated, have become a predictable partof the world in which we live.

To some extent we can blame the violence onour social system itsel f . I t is c learlyunsatisfactory, and needs fundamentalreconstructions that nonviolent actions havebeen painfully slow to deliver. Thus violenceslowly builds up at all levels, from the flashmobs of the hopeless at the base of society tothe war schemes of those in high places. Insuch a milieu Anders Breivik is only one ofmany, from the Unabomber in America to thejihadi suicide bombers everywhere, who havechosen to dedicate themselves to sacrificialviolence, rather than to an eventless survival inan alienating status quo.

But the backgrounds of some violent events aremore mysteriously organized than, say, those ofa resentful and quasi-spontaneous grudgekilling or flash mob. For some time I havediscussed acts such as the Kennedyassassination as what I have called deepe v e n t s : e v e n t s , o b s c u r e d a n d / o rmisrepresented in mainstream media, whoseorigins are mysterious but often intelligence-related, attributed to marginal outsiders, butintersecting with large and powerful but covertforces having the power and the intent toinfluence history. More recently I haveemphasized the need to analyze deep eventscomparatively, as part of an on-going hiddensubstrate in so-called developed societies. Andto raise the question whether key deep eventsare interrelated.

Breivik’s mayhem on July 22, 2011, (henceforth7/22) has forced me to clarify my definition of adeep event, to distinguish between those whichare merely unsolved or mysterious inthemselves, and those which have proved to bepart of a larger systemic mystery grounded inthe structures of either society itself, or itsshadow underworld (demi-monde, Irrwelt), orin some combination of the two. As I wrotethree years ago, “The unthinkable – thatelements inside the state would conspire withcriminals to kill innocent civilians – has becomenot only thinkable but commonplace in the lastcentury.”1

Breivik under arrest

There is no evidence that Unabomber’s actions,or the two assassination attempts againstPresident Gerald Ford (by Lynette Fromm andSara Jane Moore) were deep events in thissecond, more limited sense. The still notunderstood nerve gas attacks of 1995 in theTokyo subway, by the Buddhist group AumShinrikyo, can be seen as a possible deepevent.2 The attack on Pope John Paul II is amore probable one, because of the murderer’smembership in the Turkish Grey Wolves, anactivist movement close to the Turkish securityapparatus now known as Turkey’s gizli devletor deep state.3

As examples of systemic deep events, we canpoint to two spectacular bombings in Italy, thePiazza Fontana bombing in Milan andsimultaneous Rome bombing of 1969. Thesewere initially blamed on marginal left-wing

anarchists, but were ultimately revealed tohave been false-flag attacks organized, as partof a strategy of tension, by right-wing neo-fascists inside the Italian military intelligenceagency SISMI, with a possible green light(according to the chief of SISMI) from elementsin the CIA.4 Since then an Italian premier hasconfirmed that the parallel intelligencestructure responsible for the bombings waspart of a stay-behind network, Gladio, which wenow know was originally organized by NATO asa potential resistance in the event of a Sovietoccupation of western Europe. Moreover, in thewords of an Italian parliamentary commission,“Those massacres, those bombs, those militaryaction had been organized or promoted orsupported…by men linked to the structures ofthe United States.”5

In country after country, the Gladio networkssoon deteriorated into activist anti-democraticcells with intelligence connections. They havebeen shown to have been behind other acts ofviolence, including the actions of the GreyWolves in Turkey, and the Brabant massacresof 1983-85 in Belgium.6 Nor is this ancienthistory. In November 1990 Italian PremierAndreotti revealed that Italy, along with Franceand the other NATO countries, had justconvened at a secret NATO Gladio meeting justthe month before – i.e., after the fall of theBerlin Wall.7

This persisting presence of Gladio networksthroughout Europe, including Norway, raisesthe question: was 7/22 a systemic deep event,or at least a possible deep event? Havingpondered this for a month, my conclusions, alltentative except the first, are these:

1) Breivik most probably did notact alone, despite the latest officialreports: “prosecutors and policehave said they are fairly certaint h a t B r e i v i k p l a n n e d a n dcommitted them on his own.”8

Page 3: Norway's Terror as Systemic Destabilization: Breivik, the Arms-for

2) We should probably look for hisassociates in the demi-mondemobilized outside and against thestate, rather than in the structuresof the state itself.

3) 7/22 is probably not a traditionalfalse-flag operation; the milieu ofBreivik’s associates is indeedprobably that pointed to, withoutincrimination, in the allegedBreivik manifesto and video.

4) The motive of 7/22 may havebeen to maximize publicity for thepolitical message of one particularg r o u p i n t h i s m i l i e u , t h eEuronationalist Knights Templar offormer neo-Nazi turned counter-jihad publicist Nick Greger.

5) We should look behind thecounter-jihad ideology of Breivikand Greger’s Knights Templar tothe arms-for-drugs traffickingconnections of their avowed heroesand contacts – particularly of theSerbian Mafioso and Red Beretveteran Milorad Ulemek.

6) Of particular interest are thecriminal connections between thedrug trafficker Ulemek (andpossibly Breivik) and the Russianarms-and-drugs meta-group FarWes t LLC – a g roup I havediscussed elsewhere for itsi n v o l v e m e n t i n s y s t e m i cdestabilization and conceivablyeven 9/11.9

7) Far West’s involvement insystemic destabilization wasprobably not just self-motivated,b u t h a d p r o t e c t i o n i f n o tinstigation from Far West’sconnect ions to what DavidRothkopf, in an important book,

has called the illicit shadow elitesthat are part of the world’s elitesuperclass.10

8) Thus Norway’s terror, likecomparable bombings in Italy andTurkey, illustrates, once again, thecongruence between the darkq u a d r a n t o f s y s t e m i cdestabilization (or what I oncecalled “managed violence”) and themilieu of the international drugtraffic.11

James Petras has wondered whether Breivik’sactions on 7/22 were part of a Norwegianstrategy of tension on the model of PiazzaFontana. He has raised what he calls the“obvious question…as to the degree to whichthe ideology of right wing extremism – neo-fascism – has penetrated the police andsecurity forces, especial ly the upperechelons?”12 He thus suspects the extremedelay of the police in reaching the island ofUtøya – a suspicion enhanced by “confirmedreports in the Norwegian news media that Mr.Breivik had called the police several timesduring the attack on Utoya.”13

The Oslo bombing

In response, the Norwegian peace researcherOla Tunander has observed that the Norwegian

security establishment and police resources aresmaller than foreigners might imagine:“Norway is a small country with a relativelyunified power structure, where everyone knowseach other, and there is less of a clear splitbetween the security forces and the politicalelite. Close friends of the Chief of Police, forexample the Deputy Foreign Minister, wereamong those with children on the Utøyaisland."14

This may not close the debate. For Norway alsohad a G lad io s tay -beh ind ne twork ,ROCAMBOLE (ROC), that was partly fundedand controlled by NATO, the CIA, and theBr i t i sh se rv i ce MI6 . ROC was a l socontroversial. In the 1950s a secret controversyarose from Norway’s discovery that anAmerican in Norway’s NATO HQ had “spiedupon high-ranking Norwegian officials.” Theleft-wing Norwegian intelligence chief whodiscovered this situation and protested it toNATO, Vilhelm Evang, was later forced out ofoffice by other Norwegian security officials, asthe indirect result of a secret allegationforwarded by CIA Counterintelligence ChiefJames Angleton.15 So Norway’s securityapparatus was not entirely homogeneous andautonomous.

Whatever the facts, 7/22 must be distinguishedfrom a classical false-flag event by Gladio stay-behind networks. Traditionally in such cases, the designated perpetrator was associated, notwith right-wingers, but the left.

The Key to 7/22 Lies in the Event, Not inthe Man

Breivik the man is unique, proclaiming hisaffiliations with both the Unabomber’sphilosophy and the right-wing counter-jihadmilieu. But 7/22 the event is more familiar, andpresents a number of features that are alsofamiliar from past deep events:

1) a “legend” or documented

c h a r a c t e r i z a t i o n o f t h eperpetrator;

2) “planted clues,” or what I haveelsewhere referred to as a “papertrail,” often including videossuitable for post-event promotionof the legend;

3 ) i n p a r t i c u l a r , p l a n t e dautodocumentation, a genreranging in variety from the“historic diary” of Lee HarveyOswald to the manifesto of theUnabomber;

4) a tested modus operandi for amass bombing.

The word “legend” is a term of art from theintelligence world meaning a myth createdaround a person, usually to hide their realintent or loyalties.16 I use it here withoutprejudging the truth or falsity of the myth, orthe related question of authorship. Above all, inwhat follows, I do not mean to imply that themyth can be dismissed as a cynical artifact.Indeed it seems clear that the author of themanifesto/video, whether Breivik alone orsomeone else, was consciously creating a mythof a crusade against Islam which they sincerelybelieved in.

Let me digress for a moment, as someone whobelieves in the long-term future of democracy, open societies, and multiculturalism as it isdeveloping in America. I see the widespreadresentments of Breivik and countless othersabout “multi-cultis” as a serious phenomenonworthy of sympathetic understanding.Technology and globalization, as much inRussia and China as in the West, are creatingproblems for the survival and health of cultureseverywhere, from Thailand to Tibet to thebanlieu of Paris, for which it is difficult to seeshort-term solutions.

One response , i ron ica l ly shared byEuronationalist crusaders like Breivik and alsotheir jihadi Islamist opponents, is to be drawnto crusader-jihadi violence. (The secularanarchist Unabomber, quoted by Breivik, showsanother version of this response.) Olivier Royand others have sensitively analyzed the appealof salafi jihad to young Muslims in Europe, withan identity-crisis caused by their alienationfrom the various distant cultures of theirancestors, as much as from the Western culturein which they are marginalized.17 We need alsoto address the identity-crises of those who seetheir traditional monocultures, in Norway asanywhere else, challenged by rapid culturalchanges that are inadequately discussed, letalone managed.

Take the example of Switzerland, a countrythat has learned over centuries to live with fourdifferent languages and two versions ofChristianity that once warred bitterly againsteach other. This cultural maturity does notequip the Swiss to deal easily with newimmigrants who wish to establish not onlymosques but Sharia in their midst.

A much longer essay than this one would beneeded to explore the resonances of Breivik’smyth. But our topic here is 7/22, not Breivik theman.

The planted clues for Breivik’s legend

Breivik the man must be viewed as unreliable, and every statement from him viewed with thegreatest suspicion. Yet his extensiveautodocumentation -- by which I mean theInternet manifesto, video, and Facebook pageattributed to him -- deserve to be assessedcarefully regardless of authorship, especially inthe light of later statements he is alleged tohave made to the Norwegian police. And herewe can say that, whatever the truth aboutBreivik, the autodocumentation showsconnections leading ultimately to the shadowyunderworld of arms and drug traffickers thatmay also have fostered al Qaeda.

It is exceedingly common for high-publicitydeep events to be accompanied by suchautodocumentation, After the diaries of LeeHarvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan, the allegeddiary attributed to Arthur Bremer (the man saidto have shot the 1972 presidential candidateGeorge Wallace, stimulated Gore Vidal towonder, in an essay for the New York Review ofBooks, whether the true author of the diarymight not have been the CIA officer andWatergate plotter E. Howard Hunt (or in myterms, whether the Wallace shooting might nothave been a systemic deep event).

Nearby in a rented car, the policefound Bremer’s diary (odd that inthe post-Gutenberg age Oswald,Sirhan, and Bremer should have allcommitted to paper their pensées).According to the diary, Bremer hadtried to kill Nixon in Canada butfailed to get close enough. He thendecided to kill George Wallace. Theabsence of any logical motive isnow familiar to most Americans, who are quite at home with thebatty killer who acts alone in orderto be on television.18

Gore’s perceptive witticism, the “killer whoacts alone in order to be on television,” fitsBreivik very well: his documents seem clearlydesigned to generate maximum publicity andspeculation.

Somewhat like Breivik, Oswald left behind hima legacy of autodocumentation, some of whichproved to be very suited for post-assassinationtelevision. This included, besides a diary andextensive political manuscripts, an audio-videotape involving an ex-Army psychologicalwarfare expert, and expounding his allegedpolitical beliefs. Yet the differences areinstructive. Oswald’s autodocumentation of hisalleged left-wing identity can be seen inretrospect as false, and probably part of FBI-

CIA efforts to discredit the Fair Play for CubaC o m m i t t e e w h i c h O s w a l d t r i e d t openetrate.19 Breivik’s video appears to expresshis true beliefs, even though I shall argue in amoment that most of the video may have beenprepared by someone else. Yet in contrast toBreivik’s, the misleading Oswald audio-videowas a i red extens ive ly a f ter the JFKassassination, as part of the propagandacampaign to describe him as a leftist.20 TheBreivik video, by comparison, has beendownplayed, and has indeed disappeared frommany if not most of the web sites where it wasoriginally posted.21

This suggests to me that the Breivik video wasintended to capitalize on the publicity causedby his actions, but that the group behind thiseffort was not part of mainstream westernsociety, and is not currently being supported bythose in charge of the mainstream media. Ishall suggest shortly that it was designedprimarily for a different audience: the world ofthe resentful who find an outlet for theirresentments on the Internet.

What Does Breivik’s Video Indicate? ThatBreivik Did Not Act Alone

Both the content and the authorship ofBreivik’s video remain very mysterious. Whatseems relatively clear is that it was notcomposed and controlled by Breivik alone.

The evidence for plural authorship for the videois internal.22 Almost all of the video appears tobe a speeded-up version of a text-heavysequence of stills, possibly originally aslideshow presentation about knights templarand their fellow crusaders. It is clear both thata great deal of work has gone into thepreparation and presentation of this text, andalso that the text serves little or no purpose inthe speeded-up Breivik version, For there aresometimes up to about twenty lines of text on ascreen page, of which not more than about fouror five lines can be read, even swiftly, in the

time now allotted to them.

Otherwise the video is of professional quality, definitely not a home movie. One of the stylisticfeatures unifying it is the steady predictablerhythm in the three- or four-second time-lapsesallotted to each still. This rhythm is broken, jarringly, at the very end, when three photos ofBreivik himself appear. The first two arepresented very swiftly, completely out of syncwith the rhythmic presentation in the rest ofthe video.

I am left with the strong impression thatwhoever added Breivik’s stills at the end of thevideo – who may possibly even have beenBreivik himself – was not the originalvideographer or slideshow preparer. It wassomeone instead with a different style, sensibility, and purpose. (It would not surpriseme to learn that there are other discernible andeven quantifiable differences between theslideshow and Breivik parts of the video, withrespect to such details as light.)

Whoever emailed out the video and manifestojust before the attacks was most likely aware ofthe massacres about to unfold. And if there ismore than one author for the video, thenBreivik was most probably not acting alone. Forthe release of the two documents must beconsidered an integral, indeed an essential, part of the 7/22 event -- indeed the point of it. Ishall argue shortly that its aim was not justslaughter but publicity: to provoke aheightened discussion of the issues andpromoters of counter-jihad.

The Modus Operandi of the Bomb

It has been widely noted that Breivik in 7/22used the same bombing modus operandi asOklahoma City and the 1993 World TradeCenter bombing – an ammonium nitrate bombconcealed in a parked vehicle. As AndrewGumbel wrote in an op-ed for the Los AngelesTimes,

Page 7: Norway's Terror as Systemic Destabilization: Breivik, the Arms-for

APJ | JF 9 | 34 | 1

7

Breivik appears to have been morethan simply inspired by Americanpredecessors such as TimothyMcVeigh, the Oklahoma Citybomber: The materials he used, theway he planned and carried out hisattacks, and his own writings allsuggest he was deeply familiarwith the actions of some notoriouspolitical killers on this side of theAtlantic. Breivik possessed a Glocksemiautomatic, the same weaponMcVeigh was carrying when hewas arrested by a hawk-eyedHighway Patrol officer 90 minutesafter the April 1995 bombing inOklahoma. Breivik also possessed a.223-caliber Ruger assault rifle, just like McVeigh.23

Oklahoma City bombing

The debate still continues whether Breivikhimself could have developed the skills to makea successful ammonium nitrate bomb. Butthere are strong indications that the 1993 WTCbombers and one of the two known 1995Oklahoma City bombers (Tim McVeigh andTerry Nichols) received training from abroad, possibly from al Qaeda.

In the words of Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman

of the House International RelationsCommittee,

Nichols’ skill as a terrorist seemsto have grown whi le in thePhilippines. Initially he was anunsuccessful bomb-maker. According to Michael Fortier’stestimony, Nichols and McVeighfailed miserably when they testedan explosive device in the Arizonadesert just six months before theybombed the Murrah building. After Nichols’ final trip to thePhilippines, he and McVeigh werefully capable of manufacturing thecrude but deadly bomb that wasused to bring down the Murrahfederal building.24

Rohrabacher also explored the apparentconnections in the Philippines between Nicholsand Ramzi Yousef, the al-Qaeda-linkedmastermind of the 1993 WTC bombing. (Yousefis a close associate and relative of KhalidSheikh Mohammed, said to have been them a s t e r m i n d o f a l Q a e d a ’ s 9 / 1 1exploit.)25 According to researcher J.M. Bergerand others, “In November 1994, Terry Nicholsand Ramzi Yousef both walked on the groundsof the same college campus,” SouthwesternUniversity in the Philippine city of Cebu, wherean Islamist cell was active. Later, each manbooked a flight on the same airline.26

It is worth recalling that in the 1993 bombingof the World Trade Center the attackers weretrained by a member of al Qaeda, Ali Mohamed, who almost certainly was a double agentworking also for U.S. sources. The same trainer“led” (to quote the 9/11 Commission Report”the 1998 attack on the U.S. Embassy, and mayhave trained the alleged 9/11 hijackers aswell.27

This continuity suggests that all these

8

American incidents of violence may have beenpart of an on-going strategy of tension, todestabilize society as a means to justify theever-mounting budgets for America’s securityforces. In American War Machine I devoted anentire chapter to the question whether weshould see 9/11 as part of an on-going traditionof “engineered” deep events. (I took the term“engineered” from a U.S. army documentstating, “The engineering of a series ofprovocations to justify military intervention isfeasible and could be accomplished with theresources available.”)28

The fact that Breivik imitated McVeigh does notprove that they were part of the sameorganization. It is possible that Breivikconsciously imitated McVeigh, as a way ofheightening and shading the aura of mystery hecultivated around his actions – or if you will asa kind of hommage to McVeigh, along with theUnabomber and others I shall name shortly. But I shall argue that Breivik may indeed havebeen intimate with the arms-for-drugs milieuthat can also be perceived in the background ofboth Oklahoma City and al Qaeda. (For alQaeda, despite the odd denial in the 9/11Commission Report, was almost certainly adrug-traff icking and drug-supportedorganization.) 2 9

Breivik’s Finances Suggest He Did Not ActAlone

Breivik’s planted clues about his finances alsopoint mysteriously to international connectionsbeyond what was needed for 7/22 alone. In thiscase the mystery of his finances is reinforcedby evidence we learn independently from theNorwegian police: namely, that in 2007, a yearin which he reported little taxable income, theequivalent of $115,000 was mysteriouslydeposited into Breivik’s bank account.30 Thisimportant clue, not coming from Breivikhimself, refers to a time when "Governmentrecords suggest that …. his early attempts atbusiness were a failure."31

Breivik himself has reportedly heightened themystery behind the alleged “loner.” He is saidto have explained to the police that he had tentimes as much money (six million kroner, about$1.1 mil l ion) to f inance his terroristattacks.32 His lawyer, Geir Lippestad, has addedthat his planning also involved extensive travel:

"[Breivik] has traveled in manycountries in Europe, via car, ferryand plane, said Lippestad. Thesestates correspond to some of thosestates mentioned in Breivik's so-cal led manifesto, which herepeatedly mentioned during theinterrogations. According toLippestad, [Breivik's] traveling hasbeen directly related to theplanning of the attacks, which wasmost intense in recent years. Hehas met with an unknown numberof people who have helped him toobtain materials, and he alsoexpla ined that most o f theequipment is from abroad. Inearlier questioning, Breivikexplained that he had six million[kroner] to finance the terroristattacks.33

An even more suggestive lead to this hiddenfinancial dimension is a statement attached tothe Breivik manifesto, in which “Breivik”claimed to describe his irregular commercialand banking activity:

2005-2007: Managing directorof E-Commerce Group AS (partinvestment company – 50%, partsales/outsourcing company – 50%).I c o n v e r t e d A B B E N K t o acorporation (AS). Total of 7employees: 3 in Norway, 1 inRussia, 1 in Indonesia, 1 inRomania, 1 in the US. Distribution

of outsourcing services to foreignc o m p a n i e s , s o l dsoftware/programming solutions.Worked part time with day trading(stocks/options/currency/commodities).

In the words of this statement,

This was a front (milking cow) witht h e p u r p o s e o f f i n a n c i n gresistance/liberation relatedmilitary operations. The companywas successful although most ofthe funds were channelled througha Caribbean subsidiary (with basein Antigua, a location whereEuropean countries do not haveaccess): Brentwood SolutionsLimited with bank accounts inother Caribbean nations andEastern Europe. E-CommerceGroup was terminated in 2007while most of the funds werechannelled in an “unorthodoxmanner” to Norway available tothe coming intellectual andsubsequent operations phase.34

Antigua, a small island in the Caribbean, wasnoted for its corrupt banks with intelligenceconnections; it was used for example by BCCIand Israeli operatives in the 1980s for illicita rms sa les to the Mede l l in coca inecartel.35 Some have seen a possible implicationof Israel in this allusion to Antigua by Breivik,an avowed pro-Zionist in his manifesto. Thesame people have pointed to an article by BarryRubin in the July 31 Jerusalem Post, claimingthat the Utoya youth camp that Breivikattacked (and which had been rehearsing waysto break the Israeli blockade of Gaza) was“engaged in what was essentially ... a pro-terrorist program.”36 Finally some have pointedto the growing links between the right-wing

parties of Israel and formerly anti-Semiticright-wing parties extolled in the Breivikmanifesto.37

In this article I am arguing neither for noragainst the possible involvement of Israelis, along with others, in the events of 7/22. I willhowever argue that we should look for anultimate source, not in the covert structures ofany single state, but in a paranational darkforce with the capacity to collude with or evenmanipulate them.

Breivik, Knights Templar, and the Order777 of Mad Nick Greger

In short, both the Breivik autodocumentationand independent reports from the police abouthis bank account suggest that there is anunexplored higher dimension to Breivik’scrimes. The Breivik manifesto and videoenhance this suggestion, associating Breivikwith an alleged larger movement of neo-KnightTemplars crusading in defense of Judeo-Christian Europe.

The manifesto describes a Knights Templarmeeting Breivik is said to have attended inLondon, one consisting of only about fivepeople, including a Russian and a Serbian (“byproxy, location: Monrovia, Liberia,” apparentlyrepresented at the meeting by Breivik himself),who was now eluding punishment for hiskillings of Muslims in Bosnia. (“I joined thesession after visiting one of the initialfacilitators, a Serbian Crusader Commanderand war hero, in Monrovia, Liberia.”)38

Breivik’s manifesto

There are reasons to suspect that this Serbiancommander was Milorad Ulemek, also knownas Milorad Lukovic (or Legija), a formercommander of the Serbian paramilitary unitknown as Arkan’s Tigers (and later as RedBerets) that initiated ethnic cleansing inBosnia. The Breivik manifesto extols the Tigersand their commanders (including the lateRaznatovic Arkan and Ulemek, the onlysurvivor) as role models.39

Milorad Ulemik

The video attributed to Breivik shows someremarkable similarities to another pro-Ulemek

video, this one released by the leader of a self-professed Knights Templar group called Order777. The leader, now allegedly reformed, is aformer anti-Muslim terrorist and bomber fromEast Germany, by the name of Nick Greger(“Commander Mad Nick” or “madnick77”).Greger is a man of many talents and interests, including as an artist and author; and above allhe (“madnick77”) is an obsessive poster ofvideos on the Internet (henceforward “Greger’svideos”). These “Order 777” videos, likeBreivik’s, urge Judeo-Christian Europe to uniteagainst the menace of Islam (“it’s not aboutrace, it’s about religion”), and the relatedmenace of globalist multi-culturalism asenforced by the UN and the United States.

One particular video posted by Greger, “TheOrder 777 -- Immortals,” is so similar toBreivik’s in its stylistic details, that it suggestsa common origin may exist for both. Readerscan view the two videos and judge fort h e m s e l v e s : B r e i v i k ’ s h e r e(http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=89a_13114443 8 4 ) , a n d G r e g e r ’ s h e r e(http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5953506/the_order_777/). Note that both videos are dividedinto sections, and in each the final “optimistic”(i.e. counter-jihadistic) section is prefaced bythe picture of a Knight Templar, with hisdistinctive heraldry of a red Maltese cross on awhite field.

The following description of the Greger video inthe London Daily Telegraph is accurate:

The group, calling itself Order 777,claims to bring together Christianresistance movements and featuresa depiction of a Templar Knight[the one with a red Maltese cross]with the slogan “The Order 777Strikes Back!” alongside footage ofa variety of armed gangs with thewords “factions united.”

The groups include the UFF in

Northern Ire land, Serbiannat ional is ts , L iber ian andCongolese fighters and members ofthe neo-fascist AWB in SouthAfrica.

In one clip Mr Greger is handling aKalashnikov and in another says:“The war of the future will be awar of the religions.”…

A number of similarities betweenthe “compendium” [i.e. Breivik’smanifesto] and the Order 777videos have begun to emerge.

Breivik said he had attended thefounding meeting of the “KnightsTemplar Europe” in London “afterv i s i t i ng one o f t he i n i t i a lfacilitators, a Serbian CrusaderCommander and war hero, inMonrovia, Liberia.”

Both the “compendium” and theOrder 777 videos feature a mancalled Milorad Ulemek, a formercommander of the Red Berets, aunit of the Serbian securityServices called the JSO, who wasarrested in 2004 and convicted ofthe assassinations of SerbianPrime Minister Zoran Djindjic andformer Serbian President IvanStambolic and of organising theattempted murder of the Serbianopposition leader Vuk Draskovic.

The videos also feature CharlesTaylor, the former Liberiandictator now facing war crimestrials, and a girl called “BlackDiamond” who fought on the rebelarmy against Taylor in 2003.40

Nick Greger (left) and Paul Ray

To these similarities should be added others:their division into sections, their opening with aLatin quotation, their staccato sequence ofstills surrounded by heavy black borders withaccompanying lettering, their background ofloud ominous choral music, the scenes fromAfrica, their focus on heroic or would-be-heroicChristian crusaders, past and present, andtheir “optimistic” (i.e. counter-jihadistic) finalsections, preceded by a picture of a KnightTemplar with a red Maltese cross on a whitefield.41 There are also photos on the Internet ofNick Greger himself sporting a KnightsTemplar T-shirt, with the same red MalteseCross that Breivik posted on the first page ofhis Internet manifesto.42

In other posts Greger presents himself as areformed, anti-racist “Christian brother.”

But the “Christians” defended in his video arewithout exception murderers ready, if alive, tokill again. For example, there seems no reasonto call Charles Taylor (to whom Gregerdedicated another video)43 Christian, other thanthat he once teamed up with televangelist PatRobertson to mine diamonds in Liberia.

According to Colbert King in the WashingtonPost,

The U.S.-educated but Libya-trained Taylor is a menace to allthat's decent….With tens ofthousands of Liberians slain, hundreds of thousands displacedthroughout West A fr ica , ageneration of young Liberian boysruined by their conversion to childsoldiers , women raped andmuti lated, his country is inabsolute ruins and is ostracized bythe world community.44

Of greater relevance to this essay, Taylor, likeall but two of the nine men celebrated inGreger’s video, was implicated in the arms-for-drugs traffic.45

Knights Templar, the International Arms-for-Drugs Traffic, and Far West LLC

A fact not mentioned in Greger’s video (or sofar in the subsequent discussion of it) is that ofthe nine men celebrated at its outset, all buttwo (Eugene Terreblanche of South Africa andLaurent Nkunda of the Democratic Republic ofthe Congo) were united, not by ideology, but bytheir involvement in the lucrative arms-for-drugs traffic. These included six who have beendirectly identif ied elsewhere as drugtraffickers:

Charles Taylor, self-installedpresident of Liberia,46

Samir Geagea, militia leader inLebanon,47

Johnny Adair, former Protestantmilitia leader in Northern Ireland,48

(file:///C:/Users/Cliff/Desktop/Scott/

Ulemek was not just a militia leader, but aSerbian Mafioso and member of

the so-called Zemun clan, acombination of a now defunctsecret police unit and powerfulgangsters from the Belgradesuburb of Zemun, who ran drugsmuggling operations all over theBalkans and were involved indozens of killings and abductions.52

It is not surprising that Greger’s militia leadersshould become traffickers: illicit paramilitariesusually have to acquire and pay for their armsthrough illicit arms-for-drugs networks. Thevideo’s line-up of Christian drug traffickersreminds us of the current symbiosis betweennon-state v io lence (whether that o frevolutionaries or of militias hired to fightthem) and the drug traffic: the drug traffic nowthrives where there is non-state violence, andthose involved in such violence (whether of theright or left) support themselves by drugs.Today the global maps of major drug-growingand of non-state violence are virtually one andthe same.

But for Breivik’s heroes Raznatovic Arkan andUlemek Legija, the drugs may have been amore serious and on-going part of their careerthan as a means to the arms and the ethniccleansing in Bosnia. The Yugoslav

government embodied by Miloševićat the political level and ŽeljkoR a ž n a t o v i ć A r k a n a s t h eexecutioner, represented the mafiain Serbia. Other high-profile actorswere involved, including Stanko“Cane” Subotic, who became oneof the richest men in EasternEurope thanks to c igarettesmuggling. “Cane” is in goldenexile in Switzerland, which doesnot have extradition arrangementswith Serbia. Arkan’s murder in2000 marked the peak of thisphase. Arkan was extorting fromall other criminal groups and hew a s s o c o n v i n c e d h e w a suntouchable that he went aroundwithout bodyguards”. The Zemunclan came after him, Dojčinović[Stevan Dojčinović of CIN (theCenter for Investigative Reporting]sa id . “Under the excuse of‘avenging’ Arkan, the Zemun clan,in the following years, eliminatedall the competition and created themost rigid monopoly. Whateverbusiness you wanted to do, you hadto do it with them.”53

Russian sources have linked Ulemek withVladimir Filin, the Russian leader of Far WestLLC, a group of former Soviet militaryintelligence officers accused of arms and drugtrafficking.54 In fact, Ulemek was said to havebeen so close to Filin, that Far West was“threatened” by Ulemek’s (“Legija”’s)imprisonment.55 The connection is probable:Serbian and Russian organized crime (allegedlyincluding Far West) were involved together notjust in drug trafficking but in the protectionrackets at ports on the Black Sea.56

Breivik, Destabilization, Far West, andGlobal Shadow Elites

Far West is not to be thought of as a localizeddrug mafia like the Zemun gang, but as amultinational linchpin between organizedcrime, including drug trafficking, and theg loba l i n t e l l i gence and co rpora teestablishment. From its origins as a Sovietmil i tary intel l igence (GRU) group inAfghanistan, with responsibility for narcoticsmatters, it has expanded globally, and nowenjoys connections to the intelligence networksof Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Russia, GreatBritain, and the United States.”57

In particular, as I wrote six years ago,

The group's business front, FarWest Ltd [now Far West LLC]. issa id to have CIA-approvedcontractua l dea l ings wi thHalliburton for geopoliticalpurposes in the Caucasus, as wellas dealings in Iraq with DiligenceLLC, a group with connections toJoe Allbaugh (the FEMA chief in2001) and to the President'syounger brother Neil Bush. Thehead of Far West recently told aRussian outlet that "a well-knownAmerican corporation... is a co-founder of our agency."

Because of all these connectionstranscending normal political andideological differences, I describedit as a “meta-group,” like the drugbank BCCI which was in somesignificant ways its predecessor.58

Today I would say of my essay that I did notdistinguish clearly enough between the FarWest meta-group itself and its “roof” orprotection, the men it dealt with at a stillhigher level, like Boris Berezovsky’s manAlexander Voloshin in the Kremlin, or the multi-billionaires Roman Abramovich and AdnanKhashoggi . Far West cons is ted o f a

multinational connection of structures andnetworks in particular locations. Those usingand protecting it did not constitute a structure, but a paranational milieu without any singlelocation or organization.

These protectors qualify as part of what DavidRothkopf has called the illicit “shadow elites, those whose influence stems from illicit orunconventional means.”59 Such illicit elites arenot marginal: Khashoggi, for example, wasonce called by his American biographer “therichest man in the world.”60 The Russian armsmerchant Viktor Bout, who conducted armsdeals both with Charles Taylor of Liberia andwith Far West in the Ukraine, has been called“the Bill Gates or Donald Trump of modern gunrunning.”61

In an era when the combined wealth of the 225richest people nearly equals the annual incomeof the poorer half of the earth’s population,62 itcan be assumed that the power and influence of

the illicit wealthy is a major force to bereckoned with in world affairs. And it is clearthat some in these shadow elites stand tobenefit from the crimes Breivik has beencharged with: specifically “destabilizing ordestroying basic functions of society,” and“creating serious fear in the population.”63

In American War Machine a year ago Icharacterized Far West as a component of alarger war machine, and specifically as an“ongoing destabilization machine” whoseprincipal aim in destabilization is notideological, but “to promote conditions thatfacilitate its own business prospects…andspecifically the chaos that makes for futurecontracts.”64

This brings us back to Ulemek and Filin, whoseconnection must have been a matter ofbusiness rather than of ideology. Ulemek hadbeen involved in killing Muslim minorities, whereas members of Far West (who includedMuslims) were allegedly involved in backingethnic Muslim jihads inside Russia. But Ulemekand Filin, along with Greger and indeedBreivik, had a common interest in one goal: thedestabilization of existing society. Obviously, for their activities, whether paramilitaryviolence, arms traff icking, or drugs, destabilization is beneficial, even necessary.

Of course destabilization is not profitable todrug traffickers alone. It also generatesbusiness for the power bureaucracies andprivate military corporations whose practice itis to intervene in destabilized countries. Andfinally it is a source of income to those illicitelites who are themselves safely above drugtrafficking, but have become rich throughbanking the proceeds.

Thus Breivik, who must be condemned both asa psychopathic mass murderer and as a threatto world order, can be seen as someone usefulto those whose business it is to profit from thedestabilization of that world order.

Behind Systemic Destabilization: A DeepState or a Paranational Dark Force?

The Breivik manifesto and video constitute averitable cherry orchard of planted clues, fromwhich it is possible to cherry-pick a number ofalternative explanatory scenarios. In my owncase I have been guided by the need to test adouble hypothesis I put forward tentatively inthe American War Machine:

1) There exists an on-going milieuthat is repeatedly a source for thesystemic destabilization in many ofthe world’s major deep events, and

2) there is a congruence betweenthis dark quadrant of systemicdestabilization (or what I oncecalled “managed violence”) and themilieu of the international drugtraffic.65

I have tried to show in this essay that theevents of 7/22, studied in the context of theBreivik-Ulemek-Filin connection, provide aninitial corroboration, at this stage admittedlyless than definitive, of this double hypothesis.

There was a time when, citing the factsdisclosed about the Piazza Fontana bombing inItaly or the Semdinli bombing in Turkey, Itended to identify the source of all such deepevents with the parastatal or “deep state”structures in these countries, including the CIAin America. But in American War Machine Igive reasons, not easily summarized, forsuspecting that for the ultimate source of suchdeep events we should look beyond theparastatal structures of nations (including theCIA) to a more unstructured and paranationaldeep force or dark force, or forces, colludingwith, and sometimes perhaps manipulating, these parastatal structures.66

In Moscow in 2010 I was invited to attend an

International Forum on Afghan DrugProduct ion . There a sen ior Russ iancounternarcotics official, in the course of a longand intense conversation, said to me, “Formany years I have been trying to fight the drugtraffic, and up till now I don’t really know whatI’m fighting.” I replied, “You know, on page 5 ofmy next book, I say almost the same thing.” (InAmerican War Machine, p. 5, I write that inchoosing to refer to the CIA’s global drugconnection, I was not trying to define the forceprecisely, but “attempting to denote anddescribe a deep force, or forces, that I do notfully understand.”)

The events of 7/22 do not by themselves resolvethe mystery of this dark force. But they do helpto underline its on-going significance.

I would like to thank those researchers whohelped me with this essay, in particular MagdaHassan and Jan Klimkowski of Deep PoliticsForum (http://www.deeppoliticsforum.com/),and Ola Tunander.

54 My interest in Breivik and Far West beganafter reading the claim from Belarus thatBreivik “underwent militant-terrorist trainingunder the guidance of 51-year-old ValeryLunev, a former colonel of Belarusian specialforces, who now lives in the Netherlands butregularly visits Belarus” (Yuri Mamchur(http://www.russiablog.org/2011/07/norwegian-terrorist-breivik-trained-in-belarus-yuri-mamchur.php), “Norwegian Terrorist AndersBreivik Trained in Belarus Militant Camps,”Russia Blog, July 28, 2011.) Lunev was a seniorofficer of Far West, responsible in particular forFar West’s “strong arm operations,” includingthe violent coup d’etat of 1991 againstGeorgian Premier Zviad Gamsahurdia, in whichat least 113 people died (Peter Dale Scott(http://www.lobster-magazine.co.uk/articles/global-drug.htm), “The Global Drug Meta-Group:Drugs, Managed Violence, and the Russian9 / 1 1 ” ; c f . L i n k(http://left.ru/burtsev/ops/yasenev_en.phtml).)The Breivik manifesto does mention travel toBelarus. But unfortunately there is noindependent corroboration for the claim of aBreivik-Lunev connection, alleged by aBelarusian politician, Mikhail Reshetnikov, withan obvious motive to implicate the BelarusGovernment of Alexander Lukashenko. Anassociate of Viktor Bout, Oleg Orlov of EMMArab Systems in Cyprus, collaborated both inBout’s arms sales to Africa and in Bout’sshipping of Ukrainian X-55 cruise missiles, illegally exported by Far West, to Iran andChina (UN Final report of the MonitoringMechanism on Angola Sanctions, paragraphs1 1 1 – 1 4 4 , l i n k(http://www.ruudleeuw.com/vbout6.htm) (Bout/Orlov/Africa); cf. “Filin-‘El Buho’ is gettingnervous:” “[Viktor] Bout-Aminov, [Richard]

Chichakli, and Oleg Orlov were ‘outed’ inAngola and later in the rest of Africa in2002-2005. Then Orlov was ‘outed’ in the X-55affair, China and Iran in the beginning of 2005. As the result, Orlov is in the Ukrainian jail,Chichakli hides somewhere in the Emirates, and Bout-Aminov keeps a low profile andshuttles between Moscow suburbs and Minsk. As to Bout’s and Chichakli’s friend Mr.[Charles] Taylor, he has been apprehended bythe Hague Tribunal.“ It is widely accepted thatBout’s arms shipments to Liberia served thepurposes of Taylor. But it can also be assumedthat Taylor’s coup and arms purchases servedthe financial interests of Bout, a much morepowerful and well-connected figure.
