An in-demand career in healthcare doesn’t always take 4 years. Competition for jobs and promotions can be tougher than ever in today’s labor market.
The healthcare industry in Northwest Indiana is well and growing! However, if you are looking at a career in health-care, how do you set yourself apart from other jobseekers?
A healthcare certification is one way to get noticed and standout in the crowd.
How long are certification programs? You can be certified in some healthcare fields in just three weeks whereas some certifications require two years of training.
Below are just a few careers in healthcare that will have favorable employment growth through 2022:
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): EMTs are among the first responders at the site of an emergency situation, whether it’s an accident, a crime scene, or natural disaster. They provide urgent medical care to patients on site and transport them to hospitals or trauma centers for further treatment by doctors. Duties of the EMT may vary by type of employment, education, or certification level.
Medical Billing Certificate: With new developments in medical billing, it’s more important than ever to be fully aware of changes in process and procedure. Medical billers who have the latest knowledge will be the most in-demand
positions at a variety of healthcare facilities. Certification shows potential employers that you have the education and experience to go above and beyond.
Medical Coding Certificate: With an aging population, the need for medical coders is increasing. Certified medical coders have the best chances of getting hired because of their level of education and experience. Certification means taking your career to the next level.
Pharmacy Technician Certificate: A pharmacy techni-cian certificate goes beyond on-the-job training or classroom lectures to bring you the latest in pharmacy tech training. Many employers prefer candidates who are certified because it means they have met or exceeded the expected level of knowledge required to be a successful pharmacy technician.
Patient Care Technician: Healthcare is also changing at an unprecedented pace and new and varied approaches to patient care have emerged. This multi-functional clinical worker can be versed in the areas of Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Phlebotomy, EKG, CPR, and Medical Terminology. Patient Care Techs work in hospital critical care units and ER’s as well as a variety of medical office settings. Once certified they may utilize the individual skills and work as Phlebotomists, EKG Technician, Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician, CNA or Home Health Aide.

An issue for people with disabilities who are job searching is when and how they should disclose the disability.
Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) makes it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against a qualified applicant with a disability.
However, even though discrimination against job seekers is illegal, there are cases there can be “silent” discrimination and the applicant is rejected regardless.
Employers don’t have to give a reason for rejecting a candidate, so discrimination is hard to prove compounding the issue for people with disabilities who are job searching.
How best to handle employment issues? Dr. Daniel J. Ryan, author of the Job Search Handbook
for People with Disabilities, shares his tips and advice on disclosing disabilities to a potential employer:
Tips for Disclosing Disabilities• Be Prepared for Questions. If your disability is visible,
your interviewer may have questions about your ability to do the job. You should be prepared for these questions, and you can do that by first making contact with the Job Accommodation Network.
• Address Your Disability. If your disability is visible, it is best to address it directly early on in the interview. Because human nature is what it is, a failure to disclose the disability may result in the interviewer going through the motions, trying to be careful not to break any laws, but focusing less on your answers.
• Focus on Your Abilities. When addressing your disability, point out that it will not impact your ability to perform the functions of the job, or that it will require only minimal accommodations. Although there is no guarantee, this approach is your best bet at getting the interviewer’s attention focused where you want it — on your ability to do the job.
• When Your Disability is Not Visible. If your disability is not visible, it is up to you as to when or if you ever disclose it. In most cases, I have advised clients to wait until after an offer is extended to disclose any disability. After you have agreed upon the terms of employment and have established a starting date, you should mention any accommodations you may need so that the employer can have them in place for you when you start.

10 Mistake: Too much military jargon so a Human Resource
(HR) professional cannot determine where you would best fit with the company.Solution: Describe the skills that you gained in the military in a transferable manner, don’t focus on one aspect of your position but the responsibilities and accomplishments as a whole, and which are not just specific to the military.
9 Mistake: Including multiple phone numbers. Solution: Include only
your primary phone number and make sure you have an answering machine or voice mail on that number along with a courteous professional greeting.
8Mistake: Leaving off your e-mail address.Solution: Always include
your e-mail address, this is the second most popular way (after the telephone) the vast majority of employers and recruiters correspond.
7Mistake: Including a picture on the resume.Solution: Leave off all
pictures. In the United States this information could be considered discriminatory and should always be left off.
Solutions to 10 common mistakes on military resumes
Indiana is committed to provided quality employment services to veterans at their WorkOne Cen-ters. Veterans of military service receive priority service at WorkOne—that means going to the front of the line at each office and priority matching to new job postings, and on-site assistance from our on site Local Veteran Employment Representatives (LVER) on career planning and fund-ing opportunities. At WorkOne, veterans are helped with locating and securing suitable employment opportunities, and are given assistance in making the transition from military service to the civilian workforce. WorkOne’s Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) representatives, provide the disable vet-erans access information to special assistance for veterans with disabilities as well offer strategies to help them overcome barriers to employment. And, spouses of military personnel and former military service members can also learn about the many resources to training programs and tax credits.

6Mistake: Adding personal information about yourself, for example: Married with 2 children, ages 7 and 9.Solution: Leave this off all together. You do not want
to allow the hiring manager to make certain assumptions they are not allowed by law to make. The HR professional may feel that you will not travel, etc. because of your family.
5Mistake: Including any information that specifically would lead a reasonable person to know from a resume the applicant’s race, color or religious
affiliation.Solution: Leave off all information of any group or award that specifically reveals your race, color or religious background. Knowing this background is a “hot potato” for an employer, and will cause them to immediately eliminate the resume from consideration.
4 Mistake: Three, four, five or longer page resumes.Solution: The longest any resume should be is two pages. Remember a resume is to tell a brief career
history, the emphasis on “brief.” Many people feel they will look better to an employer having a longer resume. The reality is--the reverse is true. A Curriculum Vitae that is used in countries outside the United States and Canada should be longer, but not a resume.
3 Mistake: Using the word “I” anywhere in the resume.Solution: A resume is written in third person.
2 Mistake: Using elaborate or non-standard fonts.Solution: Use a very standard font, the closer to one that is used in a book the better. Both people and
Optical Character Readers (OCR) can read the standard fonts such as Times New Roman or Courier. Remember the purpose of sending a resume to an employer is to have it read.
1 Mistake: Having a resume that does not match the person.Solution: People are brought in for interviews based
on their resumes, if the person during the interview does not match the resume then the company feels they have been misled.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a day that traces back to 1945. This is a month to educate about disability
employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.
NDEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, but its true spirit lies in the many observances held at the grassroots level across the nation each year.
“We all have a role to play and benefits to gain from increasing opportunities for meaningful employment for people with disabilities,” said Kathy Martinez, Assistant Sec-retary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy. Martinez commented that this year’s theme encapsulates this in three powerful words- Expect. Employ. Empower. It conveys that advancing disability employment is about much more than just hiring. It’s about creating a continuum of inclusion.
WorkOne Northwest Indiana will be engage in activities this month to educate its staff and community partners on disability employment issues and fostering a disability-friendly work culture. Efforts will include an employer forum and WorkOne staff training. “We want to spread the important message that a strong workforce is one inclusive of the skills and talents of all individuals, including individuals with disabilities,” said Martina Tovar, Disability Resource Coordinator with WorkOne Northwest Indiana. In addition, the local WorkOne offices are equipped to help support jobseekers with dis-abilities and provide resources that are needed for them to be successful in securing employment, Tovar added.
For information regarding this initiative in Northwest Indiana, contact Martina Tovar — Disability Resource Coor-dinator at [email protected] or 219.462.2940, ext. 40.
Expect. Employ. Empower.Celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month
For your informationIf you are an employer, your awareness efforts can range from simply putting up a poster to implementing a comprehensive disability education program for your staff or stakeholders.
For more specific ideas about how your company can support National Dis-ability Employment Awareness Month and throughout the entire year, visit the ODEP website at www.dol.gov/odep/.
