    HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN NORTHERN SAMAR

    Literacy Rate. The simple literacy rate in Samar is 88.3%, with more

    women being literate (89.5%) than their male counterparts (87.3%).

    In 2011-2012, the elementary net enrollment ratio (is the number of

    children of official primary school age who are enrolled in primary

    education as a percentage of the total children of the official school age

    population) is 94.2%, with more girls (95.7%) enrolled than boys (92.8%),

    while the secondary net enrollment ratio is 45.5%, again with more girls

    (52.0%) enrolled in secondary level than boy (39.3%).

    Elementary education Elementary education is being provided by 537

    schools, 522 of which are public and 15 private school.

    Secondary education. Secondary education is provided by 98

    institutions, 77 of which are public and 21 private schools

    Tertiary Education. Samar has 13 schools at the tertiary level, 4 of

    which are government-run and 9 privately-owned.

    Cohort Survival Rate The Cohort Survival rate (a measure of the

    efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of education services in the

    country, and is defined as the percentage of enrollees at the beginning

    grade or year in a given school year who reached the final grade or year

    of the elementary or secondary level) for school year 2011 2012 for

    elementary is 51.1%, with more girls (57.1%) remaining in school than

    boys (45.3%) while for secondary, 67.8%, again the girls (72.1%) out

    staying the boy (63.0%).

    Deped North Samar hosts 2012 regional schools pressconference Nov. 22, 2012 PIA

    CATARMAN, Northern Samar-- The Deped Division of Northern Samarhosted the 2012 regional schools press conference on November 19-22, 2012 in Catarman, Northern Samar. Schools DivisionSuperintendent Dr. Ronelo Al K. Firmo in his welcome message saidthat Republic Act No. (RA 7079), otherwise known as Campus

    Journalism Act of 1991 mandates for the development and promotionof campus journalism. He added that this activity enhances journalismcompetencies through individual and team competitions. It alsoserves as an avenue to hold coaching and mentoring expertise ofschool paper advisers and school management.

    The event was participated in by the twelve divisions in the regionnamely: Biliran, Borongan City, Calbayog City, Catbalogan City,Eastern Samar, Leyte, Maasin City, Ormoc City, Samar, SouthernLeyte, Tacloban City and Northern Samar

    Northern Samar builds 69 classrooms and 6 typhoon-resistant

    schoolbuildingsApril 2,2012 PIACATARMAN, Northern Samar -- The provincial government of NorthernSamar was able to build 69 classrooms and six more typhoon-resistantschool buildings for the school year 2011-2012. The said schoolbuildings cost P 75 million: P45 million came from the fund of the

    provincial government and P 30 million from School Building Programof the Department of Education (DepEd).

    The 69 school buildings were erected in different towns of theprovince, while the six typhoon-resistant school buildings were for theCapul Elementary School, Catarman 1 Central Elementary School,Laoang 1 Central Elementary School, Las Navas Central ElementarySchool, Lope de Vega Central Elementary School, and SalhagElementary School town of San Roque.

    According to Sylma Lutao, the provincial information officer, thesetyphoon-resistant school buildings can be used as evacuation centersin times of calamity, as this was constructed complete with kitchenand toilets for such contingencies. This initiative by the provincialgovernment was in response to the shortage of classrooms and schoolbuildings in the entire province, considering the opening of classes on

    June 2012 will already implement the K+12 program of DepEd.

    Aside from school buildings, the provincial government throughGovernor Paul Daza maintains its scholarship program to poor butdeserving students of the province.

    Lutao said the governor is very much supportive on its educationprogram as he believes that education is an effective tool in upliftingthe lives of the poor.
