Management

The recruitment process for the Director of Nursing is now complete, and the role has been

accepted by Kim Mason, who will commence on the 11th September. Kim brings to the

role extensive experience in leading residential aged care facilities and will lead the

changes as NCCCA transitions to care recipient centered care, with a focus on clinical

governance and ACFI (Aged Care funding Instrument).

At this time I would like to extend my appreciation to Mr. Terry Atfield who has filled the

role of Acting Director of Nursing during the recruitment process. Terry has implemented

some positive quality improvement initiatives which will have lasting benefit to the

organization. I would also like to thank Mr. Graeme Andrews who has filled the role of

Acting Home Manager for Mountain View Lodge during this period.

The extensive upgrade to the Main Kitchen in Abernethy is now complete and fully

functional. Thank you to all the residents and staff for your patience and understanding

during the building works.

NCCCA gratefully accepted a kind donation from Rotary of $3300, which was presented to

Mr. Mark Metcalfe, General Manager Finance, on behalf of NCCCA at Rotary’s change

over dinner held 29th July, which welcomed Mr. Graham Farish as the new President. This

generous donation will contribute to the purchase of a new mechanical lifter which will be

of great benefit to both our residents and staff.

September is Dementia Awareness Month and is held nationally to encourage Australians

to become dementia-aware, have a better understanding of what it is like for a person to

live with dementia, and ultimately be encouraged to create communities where people

with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value.

The theme for 2017 is “You are not alone” and family and friends are invited to come

along to the activities held in the various Homes. NCCCA will be hosting guest speaker

Mr. Stuart Torrance from Alzheimer’s Australia who will present “Healthy Brain Ageing”

on Wednesday 13th September in Magnolia (the Memory Support unit attached to

Jacaranda Grove Hostel) from 10:30am to 12midday, Abernethy and Jacaranda residents

are welcome and staff will assist them to Magnolia. Mr. Torrance will be at Mountain

View Lodge from 1pm to 2:30pm on the 13th September. Activities will be being held in

Jacaranda Grove on the 4th and 7th, a fun filled afternoon in Abernethy on the 19th and

morning tea on 28th at Mountain View.

On the 27th August NCCCA played host, albeit briefly, to the Melbourne Cup, in the lead

up to this year's race. It was wonderful to see residents and their family and friends enjoy

this special visit. Hopefully, the visit will bring some luck to any punters come November.

Kind regards,

Leighton Moffatt, General Manager Operations

Bad Dad Jokes

Father’s Day is Sunday the 3rd of September. We wish all Dad’s a

happy Father’s Day and hope you have a lovely day with your

families.

Many Australians observe Father’s Day on the first Sunday of

September. It is a day for people to show their appreciation for

fathers and father figures. Father figures may include stepfathers,

fathers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends.

Background

There are some suggestions that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun

worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. Father’s

Day in Australia occurs on the first Sunday of September. Father’s Day in some countries

is on the third Sunday of June, which is close to the June solstice.

The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from

the United States. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American

Mother's Day celebrations and planned a day to honor fathers early in the 20th century.

The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Father’s

Day has become increasingly popular throughout North America and other parts of the

world over the years.

What Do People Do?

Acts of appreciation are done in different ways and may include (but are not limited to):

A day out in the park, at the movies, at a zoo, or another place of interest.

Handmade or purchased cards.

Presents such as food baskets, chocolates, clothing, equipment for hobbies, or gift

vouchers.

Breakfasts, brunches, lunches, or dinners

either at home, at a restaurant, or at a café.

Father’s Day charity activities, such as fun

runs or purchasing special gifts, to raise

money for causes such as services for the

visually impaired or research on prostate

cancer.

Some families may prefer to visit places

of worship together, like churches,

synagogues or mosques. Some fathers and

father figures receive adventures or

experiences as Father’s Day gifts. They

may include a quad bike adventure,

swimming with whale sharks, or abseiling.
