It is internationally-recognised for the world-class scientific facilities and expertise that is located on the site through the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Daresbury Laboratory particularly in areas such as accelerator science, high performance computing, modelling & simulation, big data analytics, sensors and detectors.

It is also home to over 100 technology companies in areas such as advanced engineering, digital/ICT technologies, biomedical technologies and services, and clean technologies. It is now widely-recognised for the business support it brings to the businesses to help companies accelerate their growth, innovate more effectively and more easily identify and establish collaborative partnerships.

A critical part of this is our relationships with the regional universities who we see as key partners in bringing support and expertise to technology companies in areas such as:

• Student projects & placements

• Student recruitment

• Collaborative research & Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

• Access to facilities

Therefore this event is designed to help technology companies better understand the breadth of support available to them and how they can best take advantage of this. It will be done through two mechanisms:

• Short session highlighting 4 company case studies through a combination of interview, expert panel and Q&A from the audience.

• Exhibition enabling you to meet with representatives from 8 regional universities and Innovate UK to explore potential areas of support and collaboration

LocationThe event will take place in the Conference Venue at the Park Royal Hotel in Warrington just off Junction 10 of the M56. For directions please go to www.qhotels.co.uk/our-locations/the-park-royal/.

RegistrationThe NW University Fair is now open for bookings. To book your place at the event please click here (you will be prompted to login with your NewsHub user name and password in order to access the event page).

Continuing Professional Development All the regional universities make use of their academics and knowledge base, offering continuing professional development (CPD) and other training courses which are principally aimed at developing the skills and knowledge of employees. There is an extensive range of CPD courses available covering a vast range of subjects and disciplines, with the highest demand often for business skills courses offered by the university business schools. Courses may be non-credit bearing, accredited by external bodies (such as professional institutions) or by the universities themselves with credits counting towards an academic qualification. Typically, CPD courses tend to be delivered on an open basis (i.e. anyone can attend and no prior qualifications are required) and run for 1-3 days. Some universities now offer CPD courses as an on-line option and many will offer to design and deliver bespoke and in-house courses to suit the needs of an individual company or organisation.

Graduate RecruitmentAll universities are very keen to enhance the rates of graduate employment and offer a wide range of services to prospective employers to ensure that they have easy access to their graduate cohort. Typically these services will include advertising of vacancies through internal student channels, recruitment fairs and direct assistance to recruiters with shortlisting and advertising. Aside from full time employment, universities will also assist companies seeking to recruit part time roles, vacation employment, or placements.

There is a continuing demand for ‘real life’ student projects across a range of subjects. These could be a short focussed assignment, for example development of advertising material for an arts and media student or a longer term assignment such as business strategy development for a MBA student. Such projects are usually at no (or minimal) cost to the business and aside from the valuable experience gained by the student, the business can benefit from the input of fresh thinking and new ideas.

There is also an on-going demand from universities for industry panelists and speakers to present to students in order that they can gain a first-hand insight into routes to employment and advice about future careers. Many universities also operate mentoring schemes for students and are always willing to discuss this approach with individuals wishing to become mentors.

ConsultancyWith their vast range of academic disciplines and extensive facilities, universities are well placed to solve business problems on a consultancy basis. Such consultancy assignments can range from relatively straightforward laboratory testing and analysis through to more complex strategic advice. Consultancy projects are carried out through a commercial agreement between the business and the university and there are some grant funds available to the business e.g Innovate UK’s Innovation vouchers https://vouchers.innovateuk.org/

ROUTES TO UNIVERSITY ENGAGEMENT

Page 5: North West University Fair - hosted by Sci-Tech Daresbury€¦ · North West University Fair - hosted by Sci-Tech Daresbury Tuesday April 19th 2016 08.30 - 12.00 Park Royal Hotel,

ResearchWhereas consultancy is about applying existing skills and knowledge to solve a problem, research is about the creation of new knowledge and there is an increasing emphasis on ensuring that research is relevant to ‘real world’ issues. Research projects tend to longer term, have less certain outcomes and generally the academics involved in the project would like use the results for scientific papers. Universities will undertake both contract and collaborative research for business and in the latter case some of the costs will be met by a third party usually a government funding body such as Innovate UK (www.innovateuk.org).

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (click here) commonly known as KTPs are an especially popular form of collaborative research and SME businesses are eligible for a grant which can cover up to 2/3 of the cost. At the heart of the KTP scheme there is a recent graduate or post graduate (known as a KTP associate) who works within a business, over a period of between 6 and 36 months, on a specific new product development project that will ultimately improve profitability. Throughout the period, the KTP associate will receive academic input and supervision from the University partner, with the ultimate aim of embedding new skills and knowledge within the business.

Intellectual Property Development Many of the research intensive universities have a body of intellectual property (IP) that they actively exploit, principally through one of two routes. Licenses may be granted to businesses to commercially exploit university patents that cover new products, processes and other novel inventions. Alternatively, universities may choose to exploit IP through spin out companies often with the assistance of external investors.

How to make contact with a UniversityUniversities are large and complex organisations and it can be a challenge for a business to identify the most appropriate individual. The first point of contact for a business should be dedicated business engagement team at the university who can then direct the enquiry to the appropriate department of individual in the university. Most university websites have a ‘business’ page which will contain all the relevant information and contact details for businesses wishing to work with the university.

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL LANCASHIRE

Page 12: North West University Fair - hosted by Sci-Tech Daresbury€¦ · North West University Fair - hosted by Sci-Tech Daresbury Tuesday April 19th 2016 08.30 - 12.00 Park Royal Hotel,

The Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Chester is the ‘new kid on the block’ in terms of North West engineering faculties with strong ambitions doing things differently. Unlike many established Universities we fully understand that our success depends upon our relationships with industry – both for our graduate destinations and our nascent research profile. We are therefore very proactive in developing opportunities and sharing the risk of new ventures with companies by investing our time and resources for free.

The Faculty came into existence on 1 Sept 2013 and incorporates 4 new degree programmes in Chemical Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Natural Sciences. These courses started operation in Sept 2014 and we are now have around 110 first and second year engineering and science students, who have either completed industrial placements or who are looking for them for 2016.

The Faculty has also incorporated the existing Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science which have moved from Chester main campus to join us our new location: the 66 acre Thornton Science Park. Situated 8 miles from Chester near Junction 14 of the M56, this site containing advanced laboratory and workshop space was donated to the University of Chester by Shell.

Teaching the next generation of engineers and scientists is our top priority but, in addition to being experienced teachers, our newly recruited academic team are all research active with projects in key sectors such as energy and health.

Access to technical facilities

We have advanced analytical equipment such as X-ray Photoelectric Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy, Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and also facilities for modifying surfaces using lasers. SMEs and other industrial research partners have access to these facilities as part of joint research projects.

Collaborative research and KTPs

We are actively growing collaborative research with industrial partners using our advanced analytical capabilities. We use a combination of equipment loan and contract research agreements to facilitate research collaboration with local and national companies. We are using industrial partnerships and Innovate UK funding to grow our research track record.

Recruitment and Graduate Placements

Producing well trained, industry-ready graduates is the underlying philosophy of our new degree programmes. We want to be seen as leading in terms of employability. We are funding 4 week fully paid work placements for all our students in the summer of 2015 and we also have unpaid 5 week internships integrated into the 2nd year of graduate study. In addition, we provide strong support for students looking to take up 12 month industrial placements.

A Business-Centred Approach

The Riverside Innovation Centre and the High Growth Centre have been established by the University to provide access to the right mix of support, talent, product development and commercial insights. In addition, the Corporate Business and Enterprise unit offers bespoke business courses for workforce development. One of our more interesting projects is the establishment of a student company with income generated by the IP that arises from student projects.

Manchester Met has an impressive track-record of harnessing its expertise to work alongside business and industrial partners, local and national government and policy makers, public sector organisations, community groups, charities and NGOs, schools and colleges in the North West.

Ways MMU can work with you

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) are a longstanding, proven, government-funded scheme that assists UK businesses to improve competitiveness, productivity and performance, bringing together MMU academic expertise, the brightest graduates and your organisation to address a specific challenge.

Consultancy and contract research is where our academic experts become your expert consultants. An established and successful way to inject new knowledge into organisations like yours.

Short CPD courses and bespoke training can enhance and improve individual performance in the workplace for the long term.

Accreditation of company training strengthens your own training and through validation by MMU, resulting in staff having nationally recognised university credits up to a full degree.

Short and long-term student placements, such as GradMatch, can provide funding to organisations in Greater Manchester and the North West to employ an MMU graduate on an internship lasting at least 8 weeks.

Degree Apprenticeships are a new work-based degree programme that is industry driven and government supported, bringing honours level education into the workplace context.

UNIVERSITY KNOWLEDGE, POWERING BUSINESS INNOVATION

“Working with MMU has been extremely beneficial and has ensured we have been able to stay on the front edge of the development curve…I would thoroughly endorse this scheme. As a result of the programme, we now naturally think about marketing in all our new strategies and ventures, something which never happened before the KTP.”

2014 was an extremely successful year for the University of Salford, gaining two prestigious Times Higher Education Awards; The Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology and the Business School of the Year. This builds upon our strong reputation of working with business; the University of Salford is ranked 5th out of all UK Universities for the number of projects it delivers for small businesses. We work with hundreds of businesses each year to solve technical, commercial and strategic problems. These interactions range from laboratory testing, consultancy and collaborative research through to supporting thousands of students to gain work experience & employment.

Our facilities and expertise are grouped around four key areas: Science and Technology, Sustainability, Creative and Digital and Health and Wellbeing. With over 800 academic & technical staff, including internationally recognised experts, we have a vast range of expertise backed up by world-class facilities.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are a popular route for academic/industrial collaboration and date back to 1975 when they were first piloted at the University of Salford as Teaching Company Partnerships. We have been at the forefront of delivering KTPs ever since and we are consistently in the top ten Universities for KTP activity; currently operating 15 partnerships and aiming to increase this to 20 during 2015. For businesses interested in a KTP our Partnerships Office provides a ‘cradle to grave’ support service over the whole life cycle of the KTP project. Contact www.salford.ac.uk/ktp

In addition to research and consultancy, Salford Business School promotes and supports ‘live briefs’ as a key component of undergraduate & MBA programmes which see students applying their learning in solving real life problems.
