Sprints The North West has a history of producing successful sprinters. We are now turningour attention to supporting the coaches behind these athletes to ensure this continueswell into the future. The sessions are designed to cater for a wide range of coachesbut aim to challenge those working at club level through to those working withregional standard athletes and beyond.

Planning the Year With Dave RowlandsSession 1: The workshop will provide coaches with the skills to plan effectively fortheir athletes, including both their short term and their long term goals.

Session2: the workshop will focus on athlete assessment and will include practicaladvice on baseline requirements

Saturday 4 December 2010 10am – 3pm

Conditioning for Sprinters With Simon NathanSession 1: The workshop will look at how we use strength and conditioning to fixathletes ‘faults’ and overcome imbalances

Session 2: Will look at the running mechanics of the athlete using Quintic. SimonNathan from UKA will lead the session.

Dave Rowlands is England Athletics National Coach Mentor for Physical Preparation. He hascoached at grass roots, junior international and senior international level, and has qualificationsin sports injury management, as well as experience of working alongside medical and otherpractitioners in athlete support teams,

Simon Nathan has worked as a coach with a range of athletes who have competed and wonmedals at World, European and Commonwealth level. He has been coach or manager at over 70international athletics matches, including being Team Manager of the Great Britain athletics teamat the Beijing Olympics and Team Leader of the Northern Ireland athletics team at theManchester Commonwealth Games. Simon works for UKA where he is now the Head ofPerformance Operations.

What is the Local Coach Development Programme?England Athletics are committed to the development of coaches. The Local Coach Development Programme (LCDP) is aimed at active Level 2 or lessexperienced Level 3 coaches who are keen to learn and are committed to the future ofathletics in England. Coaches who have qualifications at a lower level are invited toattend, provided they have some knowledge of the event. The bulk of the group activitytakes place in the winter months and the underlying purpose of the programme is:

� To improve the skills of coaches within their specific events and generic supportingskills required for their coaching;

� To encourage and facilitate regular meetings of groups of coaches, with theirathletes where relevant.

The LCDP will include a combination of group sessions for coaches, small seminars andworkshops. Your local Club and Coach Support Officer may also organisecounty/regional follow-up sessions organised depending on coach demand.

The North West is running a comprehensive programme of events covering sprints,hurdles, long jump, triple jump, combined events, endurance and javelin. Coaches areasked to sign up to a specific event for the duration of winter programme. Theprogramme is led by North West coaches who are on the National Coach DevelopmentProgramme and are supported by the England Athletics National Coach Mentors toensure consistency in delivery.

HurdlesWith Malcolm Arnold and James HillierThe hurdles sessions will be practical with both coaches and their athletes invited.Existing hurdles coaches are welcome, as are new coaches who are keen to explore theevent and coaches delivering a multi-event approach to younger athletes. Coaches arealso invited to attend afternoon the Sprints sessions (see p.2) while athletes leave atlunch time. We are excited to announce that Malcolm Arnold and James Hillier willsupport the sessions and offer their knowledge and guidance to coaches and athletes.

He has coached ColinJackson and, more recently, Dai Greene and Rhys Williams, to European gold and silver respectively.

James Hillier is a former GB 400mH hurdler who competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games inManchester.

Combined Events These combined events sessions run for the development of both coaches and athletes.They follow a formula that been running successfully for many years and has seen anumber of England and GB athletes pass through. The sessions are open to all U15s,seniors, novice or experienced combined eventers, or athletes wanting to be coachedin other events that they can’t access in the club environment in a safe environment.

All coaches are invited and encouraged to attend, with or without athletes, to assistwith the coaching or to observe. Please feel free to ask questions and exchange ideaswith the other NW coaches who are keen to help you develop your knowledge.

JavelinWith by Bob Welfare and Shelley HolroydThe javelin programme will be practical with both coaches and athletes invited (U15and above), but will cover the wider elements of the event, so athletes will not bethrowing javelins at all sessions. The sessions are led by Bob Welfare and ShelleyHolroyd who are both on the National Coach Development Programme.

He was the lead Throws Coach for the North West for 3 yearsand Javelin Lead coach for 6 years.

Shelley Holroyd has competed at all the major championships including Atlanta in the 1996Olympic Games, and is now passing on her experiences to the next generation of javelinthrowers. Shelley is a UKA Level 3 javelin coach and is working with a range of athletes, includingformer U17 record holder Hayley Thomas, and Paralympic athletes Sophie Hancock, ScottMoorhouse and Sean Clare.

Long and Triple JumpBuilding on the 2009/10 long and triple jump programme, coaches are offered theopportunity to develop their coaching knowledge. On the back of the group sessions,there will be opportunities for coaches to receive individual support in their regularcoaching environment.

EnduranceIn association with the England Athletics Area Coach Mentors, the enduranceprogramme has been designed to deliver a wealth of practical coach education and,most importantly ,an opportunity for like minded coaches to get together and shareexperiences and knowledge.

This workshop wil cover planning the year for the club environment and for majorchampionships, catering for both young athletes and international athletes. It will lookat how to plan strength into the year and how to identify strengths and weaknessesthrough athlete assessment. Coaches are invited to bring one athlete with them.

Strength & Conditioning for Endurance AthletesWith Dr Phil Graham-Smith, Ruddi Farquharson, Hannah Jarvis, Steve VernonVenue: University of Salford, Salford, Greater Manchester M5 4WT

This workshop will look at cross training for the injured endurance athlete. It willexplore biomechanics and the challenges of identifying appropriate practices andcorrecting faults to maximise athlete performance and keep athletes healthy.

Transition from Winter into SummerWith David Turnbull, Ruddi Farquharson, David LowesVenue: University of Cumbria, Newton Rigg Campus, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 0AH

This workshop will cover goal setting and the transition from generic to specifictraining and tapering, plus how to maintain endurance and conditioning through theseason. Coaches are invited to bring one athlete with them.

Ruddi Farquharson – Strength and conditioning coach for EIS working with a range of individualand team high performances sports. Ruddi has previously worked for UKA on the athletics worldclass talent programme.

Dr Phil Graham-Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics at the University of Salford andConsultant Head of Biomechanics at the English Institute of Sport. He is a BASES AccreditedSports Biomechanist, BOA registered Performance Analyst and a Certified Strength &Conditioning Specialist. He has over 17 years applied experience providing biomechanicalassessments for UK Athletics and professional football and rugby clubs

Hannah Jarvis is a PhD Student in foot and ankle biomechanics at the University of Salford. Shealso works with UK Athletics and Great Britain Triathlon to provide a gait analysis service for theirelite athletes. Her research interests include foot, leg and lower limb function during walking andrunning, footwear design. She is a dedicated long distance runner and has represented Wales atcross country and mountain running.

David Lowes – Level 4 endurance coach who has coached 14 athletes to England or GB level. He isthe current coaching and products editor for Athletics Weekly, and has also spoke at BMC/UKAEndurance Conferences on the ‘Young Athlete’.

David Turnbull – Area Coach Mentor for England Athletics in the North West. Level 4 coach over15 years based in Stockport coach to Steve Vernon GB cross international, Ross Millington, JessicaCoulson, 2006 European 800m bronze medallist Becky Lynn.

Mick Woods – Area coach mentor for England Athletics in the North West. Level 4 coach currentCoach to Beijing Olympian and World junior 1500m champion Steph Twell, World GB athletesEmma Pallant and Charlotte Purdue based at Aldershot.
