Worth Region. In his ninth season of broadcasting and his seventh as the play-by-play voice of North Texas women’s basketball, Steven Bartolotta will broadcast all 29 regular season games. In addition the games will also be streamed online at www.kntu.com

The Series The two teams will be meeting for the 29th time in series history. The series has been dominated by Stephen F. Austin over the years as they lead it 27-1. The Ladyjacks, one of the region’s powers in the 80’s and 90’s, won the first 25 games of the series with North Texas until the Mean Green’s first win cam in 2005 to start the season. The 71-65 win over SFA was on November 18, 2005 at the Super Pit. The two teams met last season to open the year in Nacogdoches, resulting in an 81-51 win for the Ladyjacks. North Texas has a record of 1-11 against SFA at home. In that game Jasmine Godbolt was held to her third lowest point-total of the season at with only five points.

Season OpenersNorth Texas is 19-15 all-time in season opening games. This is the first year North Texas will open the season at home since 2005-06, ironically against Stephen F. Austin. That was a 71-65 win and the start of a 19-win season for the Mean Green. North Texas has dropped four straight season opening games, dating back to the 2005-06 win over SFA. Season opening games have sometimes been a good barometer for how a season is going to end up. In the 15 seasons when the Mean Green has lost its season opener, they have averaged just nine wins a season. By contrast North Texas has averaged 14 wins a year when winning its season opening game. The lone exception was in 2001-02 when North Texas dropped its season opener but went onto win a school record 21 games.

Home OpenersNorth Texas is 22-12 in its home openers all-time. The Mean Green has won five of its last seven home openers and 10 of its last 13 to open the home season at the Super Pit. George Washington defeated the Mean Green last season to open the home season, the second straight year North Texas has lost its home opener. The Mean Green has never lost three straight home openers.

Hankins Handing Out HelpNewcomer Alyssa Hankins was brought in to run the North Texas offense at the point guard spot and in the exhibition game against TWU she did just that. While scoring 16 points, Hankins was also busy handing out seven assists in the game. If it was a regular season game it would have been the most assists handed out by a North Texas player since January 31, 2008. Not since Yari Escalera passed out seven assists against South Alabama that night has a player had that many in a game, a span that covers 73 games.

Doubling Up Off The BenchTrue Freshman Ash’Lynne Evans playing in her collegiate game against TWU, came off the bench to register a double-double with 11-points and 10 rebounds. Evans had six offensive rebounds in 21 minutes of action, but she also had a team-high three steals.

A Career-High When It Counts Sophomore Jasmine Godbolt scored in double figures in 20 games last season, but was never able to crack the 20-point mark. Against TWU Godbolt had just that, 20 points and eight rebounds. Her career-high is 19 points. Godbolt last season scored the most points by a freshman since the 1998-99 season with 364.

Godbolt Named Preseason All-ConferenceSophomore forward Jasmine Godbolt was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team and North Texas was picked to fin-ish fourth in the West Division in the preseason coaches poll. Godbolt, the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, turned in one of the best seasons by a freshman in over a decade. She notched school records for most double-doubles by a freshman with nine last season to go along with a freshman rebounding record for a single season with 256 boards Godbolt led all Sun Belt Conference freshman in points, rebounds, field goal percentage, and free throws. She had nine double-doubles last season.

Goldbolt’s Dominating YearJasmine Godbolt turned in perhaps the most complete performance by a true freshman in school history. A quick look back shows that Godbolt left her mark in just about every corner of the record books. Godbolt set the freshman record for most double-doubles with nine, the freshman rebounding record with 256. She scored 364 points, the most by a freshman in 11 seasons. She set a school record with 183 free throw attempts last season and made 108, which is the second most by a freshman and the most by a freshman in a single season since 1995-96. Godbolt won the Freshman of the Year award, becoming only the second player in school history to win the award.

Improving The FreebiesOne area of emphasis for North Texas this season will be at the free throw line. Last season the Mean Green hit only 63.5 percent from the line, which was the lowest percetage at the line in a single season since 1996-97. In particular Jasmine Godbolt has been working on her free throw shooting. Last season, Godbolt took 25 percent of the North Texas free throw attempts, but connected on only 59 percent of them. Godbolt did improve down the stretch as she finished the year by making 71 percent of the FT’s in the final two games.

Dialing Long DistanceNorth Texas hit 126 3-pointers last season, the third most in school history and just eight shy of the school record. In the two seasons under Coach Stephens the Mean Green has hit 257 3-pointers. That is the most 3-pointers in consecutive seasons in school history. The Mean Green has made at least 100 3-pointers in 11 of the past 12 seasons.

TakeawaysThe last two seasons has seen the Mean Green create more turnovers than the previous 10 years combined, which has led to an increase in steals. North Texas has 610 steals in the last two seasons, which is the fourth-most in back-to-back seasons in school history. It is also just the fourth time in school history that the Mean Green has recorded over 600 steals in consecu-tive season.

Kellum Finishes StrongDenetra Kellum closed out the 2009-10 season playing some of her best basketball of the year. She scored in double figures in the final four games and averaged 16.5 points a game during that stretch. Kellum connected on 56.5 percent of her shots during that time, which was a vast improvement from hitting only 43 percent of her shots before that stretch. Quick Out Of The GateDating back the last 12 seasons, the Mean Green has gotten off to a quick start in the month of November. Since the 1998-99 season, the Mean Green is 41-20 in the month of November. In those 12 years, North Texas has had a winning record in nine of those 12 years in the month of November. Turning Up The HeatNorth Texas has been quite good when it comes to forcing turnovers since the arrival of Shanice Stephens. Going back to the start of 1999-00 season and going through 2007-08, North Texas forced 30 or more turnovers in only five games. That covers a span of 261 games. In the Stephens era North Texas has already had six games of 30 or more turnovers from its opponents, which covers 62 games. The Magic NumbersUnder head coach Shanice Stephens reaching the 70 point mark has been key to the success. The Mean Green is 13-9 under Coach Stephens when scoring 70 points or more. When scoring 80 points or more North Texas is 4-2 under Coach Stephens.

No Place Like HomeNorth Texas has certainly enjoyed the friendly confines of the Super Pit over the last decade. However the Mean Green is looking get back into the winning ways after having back-to-back losing seasons at home. North Texas has not had three straight losing seasons at home since 1982-85.NT Records At Home Since 1998-991998-99: 10-01999-00: 11-22000-01: 9-22001-02: 12-02002-03: 5-6

has had a winning November, it has averaged 16 wins a year. The three seasons without a winning month of November resulted in an average of just 10.6 wins per season.

The ReturnersNorth Texas returns three of its top five scor-ers from last season and seven players who combined to make 94 starts last year. Jasmine Godbolt and Denetra Kellum are the two leading scorers from last year that are back this season. The pair are also the top two rebounders from last year. In total North Texas, which hit 126 3-pointers last year, has over 60 percent of the offense returning from last season.

The ScheduleNorth Texas will face a daunting schedule this year with road games at George Washington, Drake, Mississippi State, SMU, and Arizona. In all North Texas plays 18 games away from home while playing eight straight on the road, which ties for the second longest road trip in school history. North Texas will travel just under 5,000 miles in the non-conference schedule. The Mean Green faces six team teams that went to the post-season last year, which includes a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in Mississippi State. North Texas plays only 16 Sun Belt Conference games this season as opposed to 18 last year.

The NewcomersNorth Texas has seven fresh faces on the roster this season. The Mean Green picked up four point guards, Kasondra Foreman, Alyssa Hankins, Laura McCoy and Desiree Nelson all have the ability to play the position. In addition to help at the point guard spot, the Mean Green added Jacquelyn Hearne, a 6-2 post. Ash’Lynne Evans is a 5-11 forward and Trai-ce McCoy is 5-8 guard who can also play at the forward spot.

Common Opponents North Texas and Stephen F. Austin have six common opponents this season. Both squads will face off against SMU, Arkansas State, Nich-olls State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State, and UTPA. SFA possibly could see Denver in Los Angeles in the Loyola Marymount tournament.

About SFAThe Ladyjacks return 10 letterwinners from a team that won 18 games and made an apperance in the WNIT last season. SFA won a share of the Southland Conference title last season and has four of five starters back, led by Tammara Marion, a preseason second-team selection. Stephen F. Austin does have a new coach this season as Brandon Schneider takes over. He led Emporia State to the Division II national title last season.

On This DayNorth Texas has played only once on this day in their history. It didn’t turn out well as in 1979 the Mean Green hosted UTA and lost 81-46 to the Mavericks.

Last Time vs. SFA NACOGDOCHES, Texas (11/14/09) - A slow start in the first half proved to be too much for the North Texas women’s basketball team to overcome and the Mean Green fell 81-51 to Stephen F. Austin in the 2009-10 season opener Saturday evening. Junior guard Brittney James scored a team-high 17 points and Niq’ky Hughes also scored in double figures with 10 points. If you’re looking for one of the young, bright, and up and coming head coaches in women’s bas-ketball, look no further than North Texas head coach Shanice Stephens. She is beginning her third season with the Mean Green and is beginning to transform the women’s basketball program into one that will be synonymous with success.

The second-year head coach guided North Texas to a season that saw them finish in the top 10 in school history seven different offensive categories.

It wasn’t all offense this season though as North Texas continued to be a force on the defensive end recording the most steals in back-to-back seasons in over 25 years to go along with forcing more turnovers from their opponents in over a decade. Individually speaking it was a record breaking season for numerous players as North Texas had just the second player in school history earn freshman of the year honors when Jasmine Godbolt won the award. Stephens brought out the best in Godbolt, as she not only won Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors, she set school records for most rebounds and double-doubles in a season by a true freshman.

North Texas had memorable moments earlier in the season as they rallied from a 13-point deficit at the break to win against UMKC, marking the largest come from behind victory in over five seasons. North Texas also became the first team to hand South Alabama its first conference loss of the season and the Mean Green advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinals for the second straight year after an opening round win over FIU. In her first year with North Texas, Stephens guided the Mean Green through peaks and valleys but the records set during her first year have the program moving in the right direction. Stephens led the Mean Green to tie the school record for road victories in a single season. North Texas won three road games just four games into the season, marking the fastest the Mean Green has won three road games in school history. Along the way she guided North Texas to finish the year in the top 10 all-time in 11 different offensive categories. Under her tutelage North Texas hit the second most 3-pointers, scored the sixth most points, had the third best free throw percent-age, and had the fifth most steals in school history. Individually Stephens brought out the best in her players. The Mean Green had three different players score 30 points or more in a game marking the only time that has happened in 33 years of basketball at North Texas in a single season. The improvement was across the board as Stephens saw 12 different players set career highs in points while another 11 set career best marks in rebounding last year.

On the court North Texas had dramatic victories under Stephens. She won her first home game against Valparaiso that saw the Mean Green rally from a 14-point second half deficit. Her team pulled the upset of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with its win over Arkansas State and Stephens advanced the Mean Green deeper in the conference tournament than any other first-year head coach at North Texas.

Stephens officially took control of the North Texas women’s basketball program on April 16, 2008. She came to Denton as one of the best recruiters in the nation after spending time with Clemson and Rice. Stephens spent three seasons as the associate head coach at Clemson and was at Rice for nine seasons prior to that.

Stephens earned her undergraduate degree in 1993 from Oklahoma State, where she earned two letters and was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams. The Cowgirls advanced to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament during her senior season. Stephens started at point guard for Austin Peay during the 1989-90 season, her first year of eligibility.

She earned a masters degree in 1996 from the University of Central Oklahoma. The former Shanice Bottoms is married to Garrett Stephens. She has two daughters, Sydney Alexandria (11) and Lauryn A’lyce (5), a son Grayson David (3), and two stepsons Garrett (16) and Grant (11).
