POSITION: Coastal Outreach Associate - Southeast Region STATUS: Temporary, Full or Part Time, Nonexempt PERIOD: May 16 or June 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016 ASSOCIATE DESCRIPTION: The associate will be based out of the Coastal Federation’s Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center and southeast regional office in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. The associate will work as part of the regional team to implement community outreach strategies and activities to support the Coastal Federation’s education, habitat restoration, water quality protection and advocacy initiatives. The associate will focus on boosting the public’s awareness and engagement with the Coastal Federation’s regional initiatives and programs and events at the education center through effective outreach strategies. SPONSORING ORGANIZATION: The Coastal Federation is the state's only nonprofit organization focused exclusively on protecting and restoring the coast of North Carolina through education, advocacy and habitat preservation and restoration. Its headquarters is in Ocean in Carteret County, and it has regional offices in Wrightsville Beach and Wanchese. For more information about the Coastal Federation visit www.nccoast.org. ASSOCIATE STATUS: Temporary Employee: Employees who are hired on a full-or part-time basis for a specified period. Full or Part Time: Dependent upon chosen applicant’s availability. 20- 40 hours/week. Nonexempt position: The associate is a position that does do not meet the exemption tests of the FLSA and is not exempt from overtime pay requirements. Wage: $11-$13/hour commensurate upon expertise and skills. (Payroll deductions are made for Social Security (FICA), and all other legal taxes and withholdings). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Outreach (80%)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Outreach (80%)

1. Work with Coastal Federation staff to coordinate public education programs at the center including but not limited to: contacting and working with speakers and event partners; ensuring all program logistics are taken care of; recruiting members; and completing all event reporting and evaluation forms.

2. Promote community engagement and involvement in public education programs and events at the education center, including: using community calendars, Web and social media outlets; radio, print and TV media; and outreach materials developed in conjunction with Coastal Federation headquarters.

3. Work with headquarters and regional staff to plan and implement special events. 4. Assist with regular updates to the Coastal Federation website, topic websites and social media.5. Help manage volunteers, including: recruit volunteers for events; seek out new volunteer groups;

correspond with existing and prospective volunteers; train volunteers; organize events and supplies; participate in events; and thank volunteers.

6. Represent the Coastal Federation and engage the community at public events, center programs and workshops.

1. Assist education staff as needed with the delivery of education programs at the center and in schools.Administrative (15%)

1. Recruit, train, manage and complete reporting requirements for the student intern program.2. Organize and compile project and event photos; event evaluations; volunteer and numbers educated;

and center visitors data.3. Manage gift shop items and reporting.4. Assist with restoration projects, including: maintenance, oyster reef construction. salt marsh plantings. 5. Assist with general office operations.

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Undergraduate or graduate (preferred) degree from an accredited College/University in public

administration, education, communication studies, environmental science, marine ccience, parks and recreation, or natural resource management, or commensurate experience.

2. Highly motivated with a strong work ethic.3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to effectively engage people

through direct contact.4. Excellent public speaking and community engagement skills.5. Demonstrated skill and proficiency with writing and developing outreach materials.6. Skilled in using social media tools, website updates and media outlets to professionally and effectively

communicate the Coastal Federation’s mission, work, regional projects and events.7. Experience and/or willingness to assist staff in recruiting and managing business sponsors 8. Ability to multitask and work independently.9. Knowledge of coastal issues and able to incorporate them into outreach programs and materials.10. Proficient with Microsoft Office, online research, website management, etc.11. Able to lift 40 pounds, work in adverse weather conditions and undertake physically demanding tasks.12. Strong personal environmental ethic and dedication to the work of the Coastal Federation.13. Valid driver’s license and ability to meet NC DMV standards.
