NORTH ALLEGHENY SCHOOL DISTRICT September 2012 1 www.northallegheny.org NA Student Scientists Send Monarch Butterflies Off to Mexico The beautiful black and gold monarch butterfly has a network of university programs, citizen scientists, and students of all ages who work together on research and various projects designed to help preserve its future for generations to come. Here at North Allegheny, a number of teachers in schools across the District lead students in classroom-based projects to raise and release monarch butterflies each year. Through the course of these projects, students become a part of a national effort to protect these amazing little creatures and the milkweed plant, without which the monarch butterfly cannot exist. Adult monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed leaves. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, which consume the leaves to enable their magical transformation into butterflies. This year, the students in Mrs. Sheila Dattilo’s seventh grade life science classroom have already raised and released a fall generation of monarch butterflies. Mrs. Dattilo harvests yellow and black caterpillars from the milkweed on the school property and her own milkweed at home for the project. Students observe the caterpillars feed on milkweed leaves in the classroom, grow and shed their skin several times, and finally transform into beautiful green chrysalises. Monarchs generally remain in the chrysalis stage for about 10 days before emerging as butterflies. Once the butterflies have all emerged, students take them outside and release them for their long journey to Mexico. There the butterflies will wait out the winter months before returning in February or March to lay their eggs and begin the cycle of a new generation of butterflies for next summer. “This project provides students with a first-hand experience of the process of metamorphosis and the phenomenon of migration,” said Mrs. Dattillo. “They also learn about the importance of protecting milkweed whenever they encounter it in their community. It is a moving, hands-on lesson in environmental awareness I hope they will long remember.” Tiger News Upcoming events Oct. 12 – Homecoming Football Game Oct. 23 – Community Connections Seminar @ MMS 7pm Oct. 24 – School Board Combined meeting @ CAO Bd. NASH Senior Recognized as Emerging ArtistDo you know what Emma Munson, Robert Redford, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, John Lithgow, Joyce Carol Oates, Johan Baldesarri, Philip Pearlstein, Zac Posen, Sylvia Plath, Richard Avedon and Robert Indiana all had in common? Each of these revered artists and writers received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards as high school students – including NASH senior Emma Munson!

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized more than 13 million students. The annual Awards competition begins locally as students in grades 7-12 submit works of art and writing. Works are judged on originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. Those that receive a Gold Key – the highest honor possible in the Regional competitions – have their work submitted for national adjudication.

Emma was one of 63 North Allegheny students to be awarded a Regional Gold Key in the 2012 competition. At the national adjudication, Emma’s artwork garnered her further recognition when she was awarded a national Gold Medal and learned that her painting titled The Room (pictured above) had been selected to travel in the ART.WRITE.NOW national exhibition tour.

The 2012-2013 tour will reach four cities throughout the school year. The first stop will be at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. From there it will travel to Virginia Beach, VA and then Kansas City, MO. The tour’s final destination will be in Fort Worth, TX. Emma’s painting will also be featured in the 2012 national program catalog.

College Information NightThe college possibilities after high school are endless. This evening is designed to help parents and students understand the college choices available and offer suggestions for starting the college search process.

Admission representatives from University of Chicago, John Carroll University, Ohio State University and California University of Pennsylvania will be available. Student Assistance Community Connections Seminar for ParentsParents will have the opportunity to hear authentic feedback directly from a survey of all secondary students about the availability and use of drugs and alcohol in our schools and communities at the first Community Connections Seminar of this school year. Mark your calendars for October 23rd and plan to be at Marshall Middle School at 7 PM. This is information every parent should be prepared to talk about frankly with their son or daughter before issues or questions come up at home.

The North Allegheny Student Assistance Program will sponsor this seminar, featuring Richard Miller, Educational Programs Director from Drug Free Pennsylvania. Mr. Miller will bring a professional perspective to offer parents alternatives and solutions. NA representatives will also share the results of a District-wide survey of students and discuss the District programs and strategies to address the results.

Parents were first told about this drug and alcohol survey last spring. A letter went home informing them of an anonymous, electronic survey that would be given to all students in grades 6–12 to capture data relative to drug and alcohol attitudes and use among secondary students. It has been a long-standing practice of the District to exercise a high level of discernment when considering the use of a survey for any purpose.

Student participation in any District-approved survey is both voluntary and anonymous. Parents are also given advanced notice of large-scale surveys, have the opportunity to review them ahead of time, and can request that their child not participate, if they so desire.

However, the District strongly believes that drugs, alcohol, and tobacco serve as a significant barrier to adolescent development, in addition to being illegal. This survey was one of several initiatives that have been conducted to raise community awareness regarding the importance of this topic.

The survey conducted last spring was largely based on The American Drug and Alcohol Survey developed by the Rocky Mountain Behavioral Science Institute, Inc. (RMBSI). That company has relinquished their copyrights and placed the survey items in the public domain. It was modified to meet the needs of the District, after having been reviewed and considered by a number of District groups.

Community Connections Seminars are sponsored twice a year to build stronger relationships with our parents and provide information and tools to help them address the real issues of parenting in today’s world. For more details about the October seminar call 724-934-7260.
