Important Datesto Remember

Greetings from SJHS! So much has happened since graduation and final exams, from Summer School and Camp Little Jesters to capital improvements on campus and planning for the upcoming school year’s second semester block schedule.

What an outstanding example this graduating class was of the caliber of students that form the SJHS community—we bid farewell to them confident that they are prepared to join the alumnae family out in the world making a difference, as Catholic, Christian women dedicated to serving their “dear neighbors.”

As the Class of 2006 passes the torch of leadership on to a new senior class of Donald Ducks, they also pass on their bright green spirit and Kermit the Frog mascot to a new class of freshmen. All of our students have kept busy over these summer months, tak-ing classes, compet-ing in summer athletic leagues, and attending leadership workshops in

preparation for a year of academic challenges and excit-ing activities.

You will find the opening dates for the coming year in this newsletter. Enjoy these last weeks of sum-mer with your families, and come back rested and ready for Fall 2006!

God’s blessing always,

Keeping a Tradition AliveNone of the traditions at SJHS does more for others than Field Day. Each year SJHS

raises money to help make a special group of small children very, very happy. On Thursday, May 25, the Jesters provided pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting artists, inflated slides and bouncing gyms, lunch and entertainment, and the students from Holy Spirit School in Los Angeles, who rarely ever experience such a day, had the opportunity to visit the Jester campus and make special friends. In the process of making someone else very happy, the Jesters had a great day and know that helping others can be a lot of fun.

During the spring the Athletic Department recognized the achievement of outstanding athletes during the second semester. Special awards were given for achievement and performance in both academics and athletics.

Rita Miles, senior, was named the Athlete of the Year for her outstanding swimming record.

Kellie Sylwanowicz, junior, received the Jester Award. Kellie played “sweeper” in soccer and centerfield in softball while maintaining a 4.47 GPA and membership in both the California Scholastic Federation (CSF) and the National Honor Society (NHS).

Two seniors displayed outstanding commitment to academics as well as athletics during second semester. Both students displayed leadership ability as four-year members of the student council, named President’s Education Award winners, Distinguished Scholars, and more recently the Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year from the Athletic Department and share the title. They are elaine Ann Cara and Tabatha Graves.

With promises that they will promote unity on campus, make that Jester Pride stand out in all the classes on campus and instill more spirit of family, the new Associated Student Body Executive Board has taken its place as the leaders for 2006-2007. Under the capable leadership of Mara Saldana, President, Cydney Purificacion, Vice President, Gabriella De La Torre, Secretary, Sabrina Rivera, Treasurer, and Katherine Guimapang, Public Relations, they’re off to a great start. They have the enthusiasm, spirit and “Go Jesters” attitude to make this next year more than successful. Congratulations, Jesters, your ASB leadership will be great!

The success of a school is usually tied hand-in-hand with the involvement of its parents. Whether it is turning the hamburgers at the Carnival, serving brunch to their daughters and parents on Grandparents Day, or helping out at bingo—it couldn’t be done without our parents and guardians. Some continue year after year even though their daughters have graduated. Some volunteer innumerable hours and go beyond any requirement or duty. Those are the parents who were honored May 12 at this year’s Parent Appreciation Dinner. A few of those wonderful parents are shown on this page. Thank you, Jester Parents!!

COMMENCEMENTKermit took a giant leap! The Senior Patio seemed a

little lonely as graduates processed from there to the Flynn Center. The color green will never be the same again, even if the Irish say there are forty shades of it. Saint Joseph High School said, “Keep in touch! And remember to take one day at a time for there is ‘No Day But Today.’”

And on Friday, June 2, at the end of a day that began with the Academic Awards Ceremony in the morning and a Baccalaureate Mass in the afternoon, 173 seniors marched down the aisle of the Flynn Center, received their diplomas and processed out of Saint Joseph High School’s 39th Commencement Ceremony as new members of the Alumnae Association of SJHS.

Transitions went beyond Kermit and a shifting of seats in the Flynn Center. Good-byes were really not sad, just a little scary. The Class of 2006 will do well and they have been prepared to face all that will come their way. Congratulations, Graduates! God speed, never forget your Alma Mater. Remember: you can always come home to SJHS.

MICHELLE CRESPO, ’06

As little Kermit tadpoles, we all arrived at Saint Joseph with fear of the unknown. After reflecting on all of the times we have shared, I realize that, without this school, we would not have had such a wonderful time. We would not have been able to grow into the individu-als we are today. We took that first step into maturity once we entered high school, and from there, we grew in faith. Without our liturgies we could not grow in Christ and grow spiritually. Without our sports, our clubs, the fine arts, or any other activity, I honestly do not think we would have had the same great experience. Without our teachers, we would not have been influenced to have a deeper appreciation of learning. I would like to thank all of our teachers for all their efforts and passion for teaching. You not only taught us about math or history, but you taught us valuable life lessons.

Mom and Dad, I endlessly thank you for your inspiration and your hard work that made me become successful. To my brother, Anthony, you’re my best friend and I love

you too. And to the class of 2006, thank you—each of you is uniquely beautiful and everyday I am amazed to walk around school and see such wonderful people. I wish you the success in college and beyond. I have complete confidence that you will take to heart the theme of “no day but today.” Live for today and keep doing so, because there is nothing like doing something and reaping the rewards. Thank you so much for the laughs, the hugs, and for always encouraging me to be myself. I can say that you are a spirited, fun, easy-going, and considerate group. We all have something unique in each of us, yet we can come together as a class and make the best time out of it. I thank God for blessing me to be in a class with very remarkable people. I love you all.

Well, the clock is ticking. Now really is the time, Kermits. Whatever you wish to become—a nurse, a businesswoman, or a doctor, I know that as a Saint Joseph gradu-ate, you can do it. Good luck, God bless, and congratulations!

Valedictorian for the Class of 2006

The Valedictorian for the Class of 2006, Michelle Crespo, attended St. Mark’s Episcopal School before coming to Saint Joseph High School. A member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Downey, Michelle is a young woman of many talents and interests. She has two favorite subjects: English and Biology. In her spare time she loves to play tennis and the piano. She also volunteers at Downey Regional Medical Center (DRMC). When she first arrived at SJHS, Michelle says she “was really shy” and “there were only two of us from my school.” At SJHS she received “an opportunity to find out more of who I am and of what I can do in the future.” That future looks bright as she leaves SJHS and enters UCLA in the fall.

Reigning in Spain — This spring Jester Aileen Sandoval hernandez, 11, a member of the Grupo Folklorico Sabor de Mexico in Carson, accompanied 22 other members of her dance troupe to an international folklorico competition in Barcelona, Spain. Each member of the group raised the money for the trip by holding car washes and selling candy. More than 50 other groups from Italy, Israel, Russia, Romania, Spain and Mexico danced in the Costa Brava International Dance Competition, and Sabor de Mexico won the grand prize for best performance over all categories. It was the first time that a group from the United States had ever won the competition and needless to say, each of the 22 members of the group was ecstatic. Congratulations to Aileen and her folklorico group!

Second Generation Jesters — SJHS is proud of each and every one of its students, but there is something special in seeing an alumna return to the campus. Even more special is the return of an alumna with her own daughter ready to begin her four years of education as a Jester. A special congratulation goes to the fol-lowing alumnae and their daughters shown here. The second time around is even sweeter.

Dr. T. Mendoza
