Big Event, Big Success!
More than 220 members and friends gathered at the Center on May 30th to renew friendships, enjoy delicious food and beverages and bid on 100s of auction and raf-fl e items. The end result of all this FUN and FUND raising was that the Discovery Center profi ted by over $21,000! Enthusias-tic bidders won original art, tickets to games and shows, dining in and out experiences, getaways to Arizona, Florida, Colo-rado and Bayfi eld, beau-tiful items for the house and garden, jewelry, fi sh-ing, golf and boating out-ings and much more. A highlight this year was the “Fund-A-Wish” to update and add to our naturalist teaching tools. More than 30 donors gave almost $5,000 to provide skulls, study skins, furs, hides and other materials for hands-on, active learning related to the Center’s wildlife programs.

OUR MISSIONThe North Lakeland Discovery Center is a community-based environmental learning center that promotes steward-ship of the region’s natural and cultural resources.
Property managed under an agreement with the WI DNR.
As the new board President, I want to start by thanking you for your sup-port and care of the Discovery Center. Whether a member from afar, or nearby and totally immersed as a volunteer or active user, your involve-ment shows me you care. It is this support that will make my job for the next year a rewarding venture.
The North Lakeland Discovery Center has been a precious community re-source since 1995, when we delivered just one summer program. A quick look at our Summer/Fall 2010 Guide shows we’ve come a long way – and these listings don’t include our research, citizen science, mentoring and outreach programs. With so much happening and much more to come, we truly believe we are on the cusp of something even greater.
We are indebted to our dedicated staff and to the hundreds of residents and visitors who live and vacation in the region. Together we will continue to achieve and expand upon a shared vision. I welcome your input, and invite you to share your ideas and thoughts as they relate to the Center’s future. Contact me [email protected] or call the Discovery Cen-ter, 543-2085, for additional contact information. With this thought of input and connected vision in mind, I encourage you to attend our annual meeting on Saturday July 10, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Lodge. We will recap 2009-2010; and look forward to the future, together.
Message From the Board
Naturalists Licia Johnson and Krysten Hintz recently spent the day up in Wakefi eld at their National Get Outdoors Day event. Here Krysten helps participants create natural bookmarks.
,
We have more than 140 generous do-nors, helpful suppliers and dedicated volunteers to thank for this wonder-ful success! And this year we added sponsors led by
that helped raise the proceeds for this entertaining and essential event to another new high.
This year’s Big Event sold out more than a week in advance so it’s not too early to circle Sunday, May 29, 2011, on your calendar and plan to join us next year.

On June 3, naturalist Licia Johnson and I were surprised by an unexpected call. There were two large snapping tur-tles trapped in an abandoned and uncovered foundation. It was unknown how long the turtles had been trapped, but
it was apparent that they needed rescuing.
Upon arriving to the site, we were greeted by the challenge of reaching a set of turtles nearly 8 feet down. Luckily, the citizens that called us let us search their garage; we came out with a ladder and a snow sled. Using our creativity we quickly came up with a plan. Licia fi rst went down into the pit followed shortly by the sled and then myself. Us-ing a large wooden stake post, Licia distracted the turtles while I carefully grabbed the back of their shells. When the turtles snapped onto the stake, they were quickly transferred onto the sled one at a time.
The fi rst turtle, with nearly a 20 inch diameter shell, was loaded onto the sled. We then lifted the sled up out of the foundation, climbed the ladder, and guided the sled to the lake. We returned to the foundation and retrieved the smaller turtle, again distracting it, loading it onto the sled, and then lifting and sliding the sled to the lake. Less than pleased about the transfer, the turtles backed themselves into the lake, hissing with mouths wide open. Optimistic to our core, we took this as a sign of penultimate gratitude.
It was an unexpected adventure for two naturalists. All in a day’s work, as they say!
Naturalist Notes:Deep In a Hole
Do you have young children, ages 7-13, in your fam-ily or group of friends, that want to fi sh; or that are already “hooked on fi shing”? If “YES,” consider join-ing the Discovery Center for our annual Fishermentor Day Wednesday, July 28. New, this year, all partici-pating in this free event, get a complementary Fisher-mentor t-shirt.
Meet at the Discovery Center at 7:30am for a quick orientation; and then head out with your guide in search of crappies, blue gill, bass, and maybe even a northern or musky. Fishing bait and equipment are provided; however, please do feel welcome to bring your own equipment and tackle. After a morning of fi shing, join fellow fi shermen and women back at the Discovery Center for a traditional shore lunch. of Pr-esque Isle, a local fi shing club, sponsors and provides a delicious lunch, as well as plenty of bait, for all of our young “fi sher-people.”
If you are interested in being a guide for this rewarding and fun event, please contact Ryan Wahlgren at [email protected]. Please register by
7/21, or for further questions, contact Beth Meyer at [email protected] or 715-543-2085. This event is supported by area sponsors. For a complete list, please visit us online www.discoverycenter.net.

Join the Timber Wolf Alliance and the North Lakeland Discovery Center for a “Weekend with Wolves” workshop. Learn about wolf ecology, wolf monitoring techniques, and participate in discussions related to the latest wolf-related issues. Wildlife Biologists and Educator-Naturalists team up to offer an engaging, educational weekend for all ages.
Time will be spent both in the classroom and in the fi eld surveying wolf pack territories. Participants assist with wolf howling surveys and learn techniques related to wolf tracking and radio telemetry. This workshop meets the ecology qualifi cations for becoming a and provides participants the training needed to volunteer assist with the winter wolf counts. The workshop begins at 8:00 am Saturday August 7th and ends at 1:00 pm Sunday August 8th. Early registrations and overnight accommodations on Friday August 6th are available.
1-night lodging with meals and programs is $100 TWA or NLDC members; $120 for non-members. For an early, Friday evening arrival, the related fees are $110 TWA or NLDC members; and $130 non-members.
Weekend With Wolves
This past April, I attended the Wisconsin wolf population count public meeting. The objective was to gather all observations and data throughout Wisconsin and to come up with an estimated population of wolves. On the drive down I started thinking to
myself about the day and how the meeting would be organized. I had ideas but it wasn’t until the meeting’s con-clusion, that I became aware and appreciative of the thorough process in place. For those skeptical of the DNR’s population numbers, I strongly encourage folks to attend this meeting. I was amazed at how the group, made up of biologists, naturalists, volunteer carnivore trackers, and folks that have submitted wolf observation cards, went through each management zone to estimate the number of wolves. The results were based on observation, track-ing survey results, and aerial counts from radio-telemetry airplanes. At the end of the day, we came up with a statewide estimate of 702-746 wolves in 185 packs. This represents an increased wolf population of 75-100, over 2008-2009.
On my drive back north, I started to wonder about detailed monitoring processes, and what that means for our sense of wild and wilderness. Certainly, the process is thorough and trusted, and Wisconsin has an incredible handle on its Natural Resources. On another note, and as a personal aside, I admit that I did experience a lost sense of “wild.”
During the fur trade, a very “wild” time, we saw 200 years of unregulated trapping. During the logging era and due to habitat loss, many animal populations were dangerously low and in some cases, state popula-tions were extirpated. Since that time, in testament to the resiliency of animals and lands and to the intervention, management and monitoring by agencies such as the DNR, most of these animal populations have rebound. It goes to show… there are pros and cons to all manners of topics, here in our North-woods region, as well as far beyond our region and borders.

Each year, the third week of October (October 17-23, 2010) is nationally pro-claimed Wolf Awareness Week. Since 1990, TWA has produced educational wolf posters featuring original artwork. This year’s winning artist is Jon Ren with his piece “Reverie.” Jon’s love of wildlife steered him toward becoming a full-time wildlife artist. Visit his website at ww.jonren.com.
