1 Introduction

This document provides instructions for upgrading an existing MetroSite GSMBTS installation from a 1W TRX to a 5W TRX configuration.

Refer also to Nokia MetroSite GSM Base Station: Warnings and Cautions, Nokia MetroSite GSM Base Station: Commissioning, and Nokia MetroSite GSM BaseStation: Installation.

1.1 Warnings and cautions

The warnings and cautions applicable to the MetroSite GSM BTS are detailed inWarnings and Cautions [1]. Please read them carefully and implement wherenecessary.

1.2 Recycling of unitsIn case you need to dispose of the units or the whole BTS, contact NokiaProfessional Services for information on recycling. An environmental datapackage, including disassembly instructions and a material balance document isalso available via Nokia Professional Services.

a. Unpack the replacement units.

b. Inspect the units visually. Check for completeness of delivery andfor possible damage.

2. Removal procedure:

If the BTS contains more than one TRX, then the transmission data can bedownloaded to one of the new 5W TRX. See Downloading Procedure 4.

a. Remove the cabinet cover.

b. Disconnect all cable connectors.

c. Remove the units to be replaced (PSU, TRX/s, fan).

3. Installation procedure:

a. Insert the new HP units.

b. Replace all connecting cables.

4. Finishing procedure:

a. Power-up the BTS.

b. Commission the BTS as specified in Commissioning [2].

c. Replace the BTS cabinet cover.

3 Removing units from the cabinet

In case of precipitation (rain, snow, or sleet), the site must be weather-guardedduring the upgrading procedure.

Some units in the MetroSite GSM BTS contain electrostatic sensitive devices.The BTS is labelled with an electrostatic sensitive device (ESD) symbol as shownin Figure 1.

Always use an anti-static wrist strap connected to the cabinet ESD stud, wheneverhandling electrostatic sensitive units. The wrist strap and connection stud isshown in Figure 2.

3.1 Removal procedures

When the BTS is fitted with more than one TRX, then the transmission data canbe downloaded from the master TRX to one of the new 5W TRX. If this is thecase, proceed to the downloading procedure in Chapter 4.

When removing the units, it is recommended that you remove theunits and assemblies in the following order:

1. BTS cabinet cover.

2. Cable cover and cable cover support.

3. PSU.

3.1.1 Cabinet cover and cables

HIGH VOLTAGE. Before removing the BTS cabinet cover, remove theinput power to the BTS by switching OFF the external disconnect device.

Remove the cabinet and cables as follows:

1. Switch OFF the external disconnect device.

2. Unlock the cabinet.

3. Remove the cabinet cover  by sliding it upwards and pulling it away fromthe cabinet.

4. Switch OFF the PSU.

5. Unclip and slide the cables cover  towards you.

6. Disengage and remove the cables cover support plate.

7. Remove all connecting cables to the units.

All connecting cables must be removed to replace the cooling fan outer sealinggasket.

8. Drop the outer sealing gasket at the point where it covers the cables entryblock, see (A) in Figure 4.

9. Remove the two 4mm (0.157in) Allen screws on the cable entry block, see(B) in Figure 4.

10. Open the cable entry block at the point where the cables are routed.

11. Disengage the cables from the cable entry block.

3.1.2 PSU

PSU removal procedure (see Figure 5):

1. Open the connector shield and remove the power supply connector.

2. Loosen the unit's upper and lower retaining screws using a T10 Torxscrewdriver.

3. Slide the PSU unit out until it comes to a stop, then tilt the unit from the topand remove it (see Figure 6).

3. Slide the TRX unit so as to disengage it from the backplane connector andremove the unit by pulling on the handle at the front panel (see Figure 6).

3.1.4 Cooling fan assembly

Cooling fan assembly removal procedure:

1. Remove and retain the fan assembly holding screws (refer to :

a. Three T10 Torx screws on the R/H side of the assembly.

b. One T25 Torx screw on the front of the assembly.

2. Remove the cooling fan assembly:

a. Disengage the assembly from the backplane connector and twoguides by sliding it to the right.

b. Lower the assembly,thread all the connectingcables through the fanouter sealing gasket, and remove the assembly.

3. Remove and retain the fan outer sealing gasket.

4. Remove and retainthethree T10 Torxcablesentry blockinternalmountingscrews.

You may have to remove the fan in order to reach the cables entry block mountingscrews. If this is the case, then:

a. Remove the T10 Torx fan holding screw.

b. Slide the fan sideways until the guides of the fan reach the guideslots (see (A) in Figure 8).

c. Remove the fan.

5. Remove and retain the cables entry block.

4 Downloading procedure

If the BTS is fitted with more than one TRX, then the transmission data can bedownloaded from the master TRX to one of the new 5W TRX.

Downloading procedure:

1. Remove the cabinet cover.

2. Connect the BTS Manager PC to the LMP socket and check alarms.

3. Turn OFF the PSU.

4. Turn OFF the external circuit breaker.

5. Choose a TRX location, e.g. TRX 3 would be the easiest one (refer toFigure 3).

6. Remove the chosen 1W TRX.

Refer to the TRX removal procedure in 3.1.3.

7. Insert the 5W TRX.

Refer to the TRX installation procedure in 5.1.2.

8. Switch ON the circuit breaker.

9. Switch ON the PSU.

10. Wait until Site Supervisory (all units must show green LEDs).

The 5W TRX now holds the transmission data and can be used as themaster TRX when the site has been upgraded.

11. Switch OFF the PSU.

12. Switch OFF the circuit breaker.

13. Remove the 5W TRX and mark it appropriately.

14. Continue with the removal procedures as listed in 3.1.

5 Installing units into the cabinet

5.1 Installation procedures

Install the units in the following order:

1. Cooling fan assembly.

2. TRX unit(s).

3. PSU.

4. Cable cover and support plate.

5. BTS cabinet cover.

5.1.1 High capacity cooling fan assembly

Before fitting the fan assembly, the cable entry block, the fan assembly mountingscrews, and the outer fan sealing gasket must be refitted from the old unit.

Cooling fan installation procedure:

1. Refit the previously removed cables entry block by means of the three T10Torx mounting screws previously removed (see 3.1.2).

It may be necessary to remove the high capacity fan from the assembly in orderto reach the cables entry block mounting screws, if that is the case, refer to Figure11.

2. Refit the previously removed outer fan sealing gasket (see 3.1.2).

3. Refit the previously removed four Torx fan assembly mounting screws inthe respective slots (see 9:

a. 3 x T10 on the R/H side of the assembly.

b. One T25 at the front of the assembly.

4. Align the guides and backplane connector at the side of the fan assemblywith the guide slots on the backplane.

5. Slide the unit home into the backplane connector.

6. Refit all connecting cables:

a. Drop the outer fan sealing gasket.

b. Open the cablesentry block and rethreadall cables throughthe outerfan sealing gasket

c. Reconnect all cables.

d. Place the cables into their respective slot of the cables entry block (see. Figure 10).

7. Refit and tighten the two 4mm (0.157in) Allen screws on the cables entryblock (see Figure 4).

8. Refit the outer fan sealing gasket.

5.1.2 TRX Installation procedure

In order to tighten the antenna connectors with a torque spanner, it is necessary toinstall the TRX units in the following order:

• TRX 4, 3, 2, 1

Install the TRX unit as follows (see Figure 12):

Remember to fit the previously downloaded TRX in position 1 therebyconfiguring it as the master TRX.

1. Slide the unit into the appropriate slot.

2. Press the units carefully against the backplane and engage the backplaneconnector. Do not use excessive force.

3. Fix and tighten the unit retaining screws. Use a T10 Torx screwdriver.

4. Repeat the procedure for each unit.

5. Refit the antenna connection.

6. Refit the diversity cables if applicable.

5.1.3 PSU installation

Install the PSU as follows (refer to Figure 5):

1. Slide the unit into the appropriate slot.

2. Place the PSU into the bottom runner then push the top of the unit forwardinto the clearance slots provided in the top runners.

3. Slide the PSU to the left until the guidesandbackplane connector click intoplace.

4. Tighten the two T10 Torx PSU mounting screws.

5. Loosen the two T10 Torx screws on the connector shield and open theconnector shield.

6. Connect the power supply connector into the PSU power input socket.

7. Tighten the T10 Torx screws of the connector shield.

5.1.4 Cabinet cover and cable cover installation procedure

GROUNDING. Before refitting the cabinet cover, make sure that thegrounding cable has been reconnected to the BTS cabinet.

Cabinet installation procedure:

1. Fit the cable cover (see Figure 13):

a. Place the cable cover support onto the hook at the end of theperforated plastic panel.

b. Press the cable cover against the cable cover support until it locks.

2. Refit the cabinet cover (see Figure 14):

a. Attach the safety strap to the fixing point on the top of the cabinet.

b. Hang the cover on the hook at the side of the cabinet. Make sure thatthe cover engages on the top runner of the cabinet.

3. Switch ON the external disconnect device.

4. Switch ON the PSU power switch.
