Reaching Out to the Community The Year 9 Students at St Mary’s have been offering their gifts and talents in service to the com-munity, as part of their Religious Education Unit, People Can Achieve Emotional Peace. Several students spent time at Germanus Kent, chatting, reading and playing games with the residents, while other students prepared food for deliveries for Feed the Little Children. Other students uti-lised their organisational skills by filing documents for SAFE, while some went to the Primary Campus to assist students with Literacy and Art. Many found the experience rewarding and are seeking to continue their outreach on a more regular basis.

Primary Parent Teacher Night – This will be held throughout next week. Teachers have sent letters home to confirm bookings for parents to come in to meet with their child/children’s teachers. NDU Opening and Lectures – This week Notre Dame University are hosting an International Conference from Thursday until Sunday. The Broome campus is hosting the 2016 Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic College and Universities. The Conference will see University leaders, academics and stu-dents from across Australia and Southeast Asia come together. We have a number of students assisting with Hospitality and our Choir will also be performing for the Opening Ceremony.

Staffing - We welcome on staff Gem Boekleman who joined the Special Education Team as an Education Support TA and Mariah Tolentino who commences next Monday in Year 1 as an ATA.

NAPLAN – We have received the 2016 NAPLAN results which have been mailed to parents this week. If you have any questions about the results please contact the class room teachers if you are a primary par-ent or Lea Wilson if you are a secondary parent.

Last week three lucky Year 10 students, Max Healey, Matthew Petrov and Helena Hungerford-Morgan were fortunate enougph to take part in the Get Real Experience and Try (GREaT) Nursing and Midwifery work experience program. Over 5 consecutive days each student rotated through a variety of departments at Broome Hospital to find out what it’s really like to be a nurse or midwife. They observed various procedures, and were able to have some hands on experiences such as bathing a newborn baby, applying wound dressings and set-ting up intravenous therapy. They gained experience in practicing the correct hand washing techniques and gowning and gloving. We hope this opportunity helps them when deciding if nursing or midwifery is the right career choice for each of them. We would like to thank Broome Hospital and Linda Royce Acting Regional Nurse Manager for providing our students with such a rewarding experience. Year 10 Work experience for all students takes place in Week 10 this term, it is hoped all students should now have made contact with a host employer. Please contact Mr Paul Woodbridge if you require more details.

The year 10 Art students were lucky enough to visit Leon Pericles, the well-known West Australian artist, who told them how to make their work look more appealing. It was a very worthwhile visit.

PRIMARY HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL—THE WINNERS ARE WARD HOUSE!!! The Primary House Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 19th August on the Secondary Campus oval. The oval was looking magnificent thanks to Mr. Kim and Mr. Murray who had been working tirelessly to have the surface in such great condition and the lines marked with their usual professionalism. Thanks also to the Parents and Friends’ Association we also had 4 beautiful new shade tents on display which looked incredible.

The day started with our traditional marching, led once again by Miss Josie, and this year’s marching display was the best yet. The houses were so well led by their captains, with all houses putting on an incredible show. In the end we had a tie for the Marching Shield, with Rice and Barbier both coming out victorious. Well done!

From the gruelling 400m races through to watching the Kindy students running in their 75m races, it was fantastic to see each and every student trying their hardest and having fun while competing. The cheering throughout the day was uplifting and it was great to see the St. Mary’s spirit on show. Thank you to all of the parents and friends who came along to support the students – your presence ensures a carni-val like atmosphere trackside which the students really enjoy. It was also great to see the Secondary students come across and spectate as well.

A very special thank you also to the team of parents who helped out on the day with various jobs, the staff who helped set up and then make sure the carnival ran smoothly, and also to the canteen staff for providing lunches. Our Sports Carnivals, which are such a wonderful day of celebration for our school, would not be possible without everybody pitching in and helping – such a great team effort! The Parents and Friends cake stall was a huge success with lots of the crowd enjoying some treats while they watched the races – this also adds to the atmosphere of the day and really makes it a special occasion for the whole school.

Quite a few records were broken on the day, with Reshinta Bradshaw in Year 6 breaking 3 of them. Reshinta ran the 100m in 13.47 sec-onds, the 200m in 29.91 seconds and the 400m in 1:10.00! An outstanding achievement Reshinta! Other records broken on the day were Year 2 Zai Zai Hart in the 100m (15.57 seconds),Year 3 Daijon Puertollano in the 100m (15.28 seconds), Year 5 Jack Dann in the 100m (14.62 seconds), and Year 5 Rio Cahill in the 400m (1.12.55). Congratulations to those record breakers and also to the Champion Boys and Girls listed in the table below.

The St. Mary’s House Athletics Champion for 2016 is once again Ward House! Congratulations!!

YEAR 6 GIRLPOWER EVENING Last Wednesday evening the year 6 girls invited a special woman in their life to come to and learn about the Girl Power Program that they have been working with Miss Rebecca and Miss Melita on for the past couple of years. The girls talked about the important messages of the program and demonstrated some of the skills that they have learnt in some very entertaining skits and presentations. It was so inspiring to see that these young leaders of St Mary’s College had learnt so much about problem solving and worked hard to build positive friendships and relationships with each other, staff and themselves. After the presentations the Mums, Aunties, Sisters, Grandmas and friends that had been invited stayed and shared food and discussed the program with the girls. It was a lovely evening and we appreciated the fantastic turnout, it was a real credit to the strength of our gorgeous year six girls!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS PERFORMING ARTS COMPETITION - DRAMA TOUR In week 4, our year 10 Drama students set off on tour for the Catholic Schools Performing Arts competition in Perth. We arrived on Wednesday evening and finished the day with rehearsals of our monologues in preparation for the competition. We were up early on Thursday morning and made our way to Chisolm Catholic College where the Dra-ma Solo’s competition was held. Each of us performed our monologues in front of an audience and the adjudicator (we were all very nervous!). We all performed so well and scored very highly! We finished our competition day with some serious shopping before heading into the city for dinner. After dinner we had the privilege of seeing The Cau-casian Chalk Circle at the State Theatre. This was performed by Black Swan State Theatre in cooperation with the National Theatre of China and it was amazing! We were even lucky enough to be part of the ‘Q&A’ session at the end of the night. Friday was our last day in Perth and we went to join in some Drama fun at John Curtin College of the Arts. We watched some of their Drama students perform, participated in a short workshop and were shown through their theatre and production facilities. Before heading to the airport we had some lunch at the Fremantle

Markets and did some last minute shopping!

Year 7 students took to the microphone on Tuesday and recited their favourite poetry to an enthusiastic recess audience. Special thanks to the students who presented and to Ms Vicki. On Wednesday students enjoyed Picnic by the Books! Five rugs were placed under the shade of trees with a variety of pictures books related to the 2016 theme – People, Dreaming, History, Land and Animals. Jelly Beans were rewarded to students who could answer Australiana trivia questions. Special thanks to Ms Fran for making our delicious Aussie rewards! On Thursday Year 7 English students enjoyed a presentation by local author Pat Lowe who spoke about her passion for writing, her books and encouraged students to pursue writing. Ms Angela spoke to English classes about the CBCA short listed books and the winners in each category. Students are being encouraged to enter the Book Week Quiz and be in the running to win the Yummy Book Hamper. The Book Week display in the Library draws in students along with our communal 1,000 piece jigsaw puz-zle which is continuing to develop. It’s great to see so many students from every year level adding their piece to the school puzzle. Congratulations to the winners of the “Five Books – One Connection Competition”. The correct con-nection between the five book covers was “The colours of the Olympic rings”. The winners were: 1st Mor-gan Swanson; 2nd Amy-Louise Dibucchianico Di; 3rd Izzabella Liddelow. World Youth Day To celebrate World Youth Day locally, Luna Lippert, Dakota Leak and Grace Strain organised several activities around the themes of the Year of Mercy for students to participate in. Students were able to experience ‘pilgrimage’ by walking and praying using a labyrinth, a prayer path leading to God. We thank Linda Pioli, who shared her personal experience of previous participation in World Youth Days and the lasting impact these events have had on her life. In the spirit of all things Polish, students also enjoyed tasting polish sausage and sauerkraut, whilst viewing the current WYD daily highlights.

If so—thank you! If not, don’t panic, just pop in and see Amy to sort out how best to pay before the end of the school year—it’s creeping up on us so quickly! Term 3 School fees have now been billed and posted to you in the mail. If you

would like to pop in and see Amy Hyett at any time, you are welcome to set up a payment arrangement to pay these fees in instalments across the remainder of the year. There are many options for payment of School fees, and families are encouraged to speak with Amy to determine the best way to make payment. Fees can be paid using either cash at the reception on Sec-ondary Campus, cheque, EFTPOS, direct bank transfer, BPAY or centrepay.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS

Students from our school will soon be undertaking (or have recently undertaken), an education

tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of ed-

ucational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit

the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting

the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $260 per student

under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is

paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
