NEWS{01}2016-17

Dear Families and Students: No school FEB 16, 17, 20 Happy 2017! I hope it’s a joyous year for your family.

The first semester has ended and we are preparing report cards to send home. Thank you to every parent for your continuous efforts to help students prepare for their school day by being on time, attending every day, and completing homework. As a National School of Character, our work is never complete as we strive to prepare our students to be caring and responsible adults!

This week students have participated in activities associated with Kindness Week. Their participation will result in donations to the Leukemia society on behalf of our school community. Giving back in any way you can is so important for any community. I want to thank the many parents who are in our building daily, whether it’s helping our youngest get a good start to the day, volunteering in a classroom, coaching or any one of the many things you do to help CWA be a great place for your children to learn and grow!

It is mid-winter and MAP testing (Measure of Academic Progress) is in progress. Please reinforce the importance of these tests and the need for children to focus and take their time. These scores are used for placement in other schools, especially high schools, and give teachers valuable information on individual student’s learning and knowledge. The growth scores also impact the school’s overall State Report Card score. CWA was just two tenths of a point from exceeding expectations, and our goal is to get there next year! The full report card can be found on our website.

Enrollment for 2017-2018 Prior to the break, we sent home a form to indicate your intent to return for the 2017-18 school year. Many of you responded promptly, but we are still waiting to hear from several families.

Please note, as of February 2, we will accept open enrollment applications. If you have not indicated that your child will return, you may lose the seat in that grade. This happened to some families in the past, so please be sure to notify the office if you plan to return. Do not assume, as we have limited seats in each grade.

If you have a four year old who you plan to send for 4K next year, please enroll them as soon as possible as siblings receive the seats on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are unsure of your plans next year or would like to talk it through, don’t hesitate to call me directly.

Please note, 7th and 8th grade students do not have classes on the 15th, 16th or 17th in order to accommodate all of the conferences. Students in grades K4-5th will be out of class on the 16th and 17th only. Thank you in advance for ensuring 100% parent participation. Work with your child’s teacher to schedule a time.

The Community Outreach team provides SaintA and CWA families with resources to help keep us all strong and stable. Need assistance lowering your energy bill? Looking for a new doctor? How about job skills training? SaintA’s Community Outreach team may be able to point you in the right direction.

Watch for more information about community resources for CWA families in future newsletters and on our Facebook page. You can also call one of our Community Outreach Specialists listed below. We specialize in resources for employment, education, health and housing.

HOKKI STOOLS: SQUIRM & LEARN When you were in school, how many times were you asked to sit still or stop fidgeting in your seat? As educators, our thinking has changed a lot since then. Now we know that, for some kids, movement is necessary and produces better learning results then feeling restrained by a standard desk and chair.

Hokki stools are a perfect solution for keeping kids engaged. The curved base means kids can move while still remaining in their seats. These stools were designed with human factors like the student’s size, posture and ability to think clearly and have fun in mind.

In 2016, Capitol West Academy received grant money to purchase and begin using Hokki Stools in some of its classrooms. The results and feedback from students and parents have all been positive – and more stools have been added! Thank you to Herb Kohl Philanthropies for the initial grant and the St. Aemilian-Lakeside Foundation for an additional contribution.

We are doing all we can to create the kind of learning environment that allows character to be built alongside academic achievements.

HOLIDAY PROGRAM: THE GIFT OF A GUEST APPEARANCE Thank you to all the parents of K4-2nd Graders who came to the Holiday Program in December. The students enjoyed sharing the gift of music with all of you almost as much as they enjoyed receiving the gift of a guest appearance. That’s right, the guy in the red suit stopped by to hand out candy canes and pose for photos.

Special thanks to the jolly fella for taking time from his busy schedule to spend some time with us.
