BSU II Programme design

• From 1 January 2014 to 1 November 2016.

• DKK 100 million. • Seven universities in Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Nepal.

• Overall objective: Capacity of seven universities to undertake high-quality research enhanced through support to the research environment and research processes.

•  Sub-objective 1: Research policies, strategies, organisation and research processes improved.

•  Sub-objective 2: University-wide services and facilities to support

research activities strengthened.

• Builds on continued cooperation between South universities and Danish universities.

• South-driven cooperation: seven South universities define and manage their own activities and invite Danish universities to participate.

• Governance structure less complex than in the first phase: instead of thematic platforms, one consortium of Danish universities is cooperating with each South institution.

• 60 % of funds to south universities. 40 % to Danish universities. 20% of budget for overhead, no requirement of co-financing by Danish universities.

• Danida Fellowship Centre to provide administrative support.

•  Sub-objective 1: Ph.D. schools, development of research concepts, pilot studies, strengthening research policies and strategies, Ph.D. grants to selected younger staff.

•  New strategic framework for Danish support for development research •  Focus on South-driven research, national priorities, institutional capacity building,

increased communication, better performance framework and more involvement of Danish embassies.

•  BSU II has become a flagship program. Especially due to the South-driven approach •  Development Policy Council in Denmark is positive about the South-driven

development
