Good players have time on the ball because they play with their head up and are constantly aware of their optionsbefore they even receive the ball. This practice will introduce players to the importance of making deliberate choicesabout where to pass not just hitting the ball into space and hoping for the best. Gradually adjust the drill to increasethe pressure as the players start to get success.

No. 35 “Relay”q Running With the Ball

Set up the grid as shown with the poles acting as passive defendersShort queues of players begin at cones 1 and 2 as in the diagramThe first player at cone 1 runs with the ball until he is just out of range of the poleHe then makes a diagonal pass to the front player at cone 2He sprints with the ball as far as the other pole and passes to the front player at cone 1 and so on ...Make it competitive - which more than one grid which group can make most runs in given time?

Organisation

w Big first touch out of feet - straight and accuratew Look carefully at their running mechanicsw First few paces short, good arm movementw Play the ball with the front of the foot

w Look up between each touch to observe picturew Make sure ball continues to move straightw Get close control approaching polew Accurate diagonal pass into feet of next player

Coaching Points

i Adjust the length of the grid

ii Require players to do a 360o turn around pole before making the passiii Use defenders instead of poles, they can have the ball if runner fails to get control and pass at correct time

This is a simple rotational drill that allows players to practice running with the ball. Speed is becoming more of animportant feature of the modern game and none of our players will likely go on to play at a higher level unless theycan move with pace on and off the ball. A mid-fielder who can break away and launch a fast counter-attack isvaluable. Don’t let lines be too long but make sure they are getting rests and working at full speed.

Arrange discs in a circle with the same number of discs as there are players in your groupPlayers stand with one foot on a discOne player goes into the middle leaving a spare disc on the perimeterOn the coach’s signal the centre player tries to claim a spare disc by getting his foot on it firstThe others need to protect the spare disc by getting a foot on it before the middle playerAs players move, others must keep adjusting to cover spare discs as they appearThe player who the coach decides failed to protect a disc is next in the middleHe can go immediately when he has touched the middle disc with his foot

This very simple game is the one that players of all ages - from little ones to 18 year old elite players - ask forrepeatedly. No footballs involved but some important football skills. It will quickly show up those who have a tacticalbrain and can think ahead, and those who only react to danger long after it is too late. You decide who is at fault eachtime. Use it for a few minutes to finish a session with some fun.

A very useful warm up or cool down that gives players the chance to work on a wide range of skills. Start simple withjust three or so skills and gradually build it up to ten over the course of a number of weeks. Make sure in advancethat you have enough footballs of the correct size and properly inflated. Don’t allow players to switch off and messaround, insist they make their best attempt at all the skills.
