Narrator: Ibarra followed the advice of Tandang Tasio. Fortunately, he succeeded in his

project. And then the day came for the laying of the building cornerstone. The Alcaldeapproached the yellow-faced man in charge of the derrick, and

Alcalde: I dont understand how to plan to do it

Yellow lady: Look, with a minimum of force, I can raise and lower the great stone. Oneman in the pit is enough to fit the two stones together

Narrator: Nearby a tale containing newspapers, manuscripts, medals and other historical

Narrator: Meantime, Elias had been watching the ceremonies from a near place hiddenfrom view

Elias: I hope he refuses.. How I wish he does

Narrator: But contrary to Elias expectation..

Ibarra: Let me do it, then Senor Alcalde

Narrator: Ibarra took the leaden cylinder containing his countrys history and walked

toward the pit

Ibarra: This is just the beginning of my dreams for the youth of the land

Narrator: On the other hand, the yellow faced man had other dreams..

Yellow lady: Just one more step and youre dead!

Narrator: Ibarra was beginning to insert the cylinder into the hole of the cornerstone when

suddenly

( Elias saved Ibarra from the stone by jumping from his back)

Ibarra: oops!

Narrator: To his surprise, Ibarra saw Elias on top of him..

Ibarra: ELIAS! What does this mean?

Elias: I will explain to you some other day!

Narrator: In no time Elias lost himself among the crowd who were too stunned to do

anything And when at last the confusion had settled down

Alcalde: Hes dead

Nor Juan: My God!

Narrator: Ibarra walked over to where the crowd gathered and

Ibarra: Who is he?!

Alcalde: He is the man who attempted to kill you

Narrator: Instead of getting angry

Ibarra: I will take care of his burial

Nor Juan: This is something mysterious! It should be investigated

Narrator: Ibarra shooked his head and

Ibarra: What for? We may conduct an investigation but there is nothing more we can do

about it! Its all over. Instead of destroying me, He destroyed himself!

Narrator: The gentlemanly act of Ibarra elicited praises from the crowd

Ibarra: I will have grown gray hairs but I dont think I will ever see a man like him again!

Nor Juan: He is truly a wonderful man.. that Senor Ibarra!

Scene 2

Characters:

Elias

Narrator: The following night

Perfecta: Senorito, someone wishes to see you. Hes waiting outsideIbarra: Who is he?

Perfecta: He refuses to give his name.. But he said that the two of you know each other!

Ibarra: Hmmm! Then let him in!

Narrator: The servant Perfecta he was told, and after a few moments

Ibarra: Elias! Welcome, my friend! I never thought it was you!

Narrator: After some preliminary talks

Ibarra: You saved my life! Were it not for you

Elias: When I tried to save you, it was to pay my debt

Narrator: And after elias had reflected on his thoughts

Elias: It would be for your security if no one of your enemies knew that youre prepared!

Ibarra: Enemies?! Do I have one?

Elias: All of us do have, Senor Ibarra. . The man who attempted to kill you was one of

them! Im not sure of the others. .

Ibarra: I regret that the man is dead. Were he alive, He could give me some clues as to

who are my enemies!

Narrator: Elias smiled in disagreement. Then . . .

Elias: Alive, He would have escaped erroneous human justice.. But perhaps it was the

will of God that he was killed

Narrator: And after warning, Ibarra knew about the his secret enemies, Elias bid goodbye.

Ibarra: Shall I see you again my friend?

Elias: Yes, anytime you wish and whenever I can do something for you. I still owe yousomething!

Scene 3

Narrator: A number of days elapsed.. After the school building had been constructed, an

inaugural party was held, It was attended by men of high level. The alcalde had just been

through heaping praises on Ibarra when Padre Damaso sneered, and in a contemptuousvoice

Padre Damaso: Too much had been spent for this building! That is the trouble with the

indios! Imbued with a little learning, they begin to be pretentious!

Narrator: Maria Clara noticed that Ibarras face was beginning to grow red, and

Maria Clara: Dont pay attention to him Crisostomo!

Ibarra: Maria Clara, if you only knew how hard Ive been trying to control myself

Padre Damaso: All the vagrants have been going to Europe and when they return, they

pretend to be GENIUSES!. God punishes such vagrants even before they die.

THE FATHER OF SUCH PETTY PERSONALITIES LANGUISH AND DIE IN JAILLIKE A. . .

Ibarra: You have no right to desecrate the memory of my father!

Narrator: And when he could no longer hold his terrible anger, he lunged at Padre

Damaso..

Ibarra: Say your prayers! Your life now lies at the mercy of my hands!

Narrator: The Youngman seized a sharp knife and. . .

Narrator: Ibarra looked at Maria Clara, slowly he lowered his arm, and the body of the

Franciscan went down with a thud

Ibarra: This is really a small world for the two of us. . . But for your sake, Maria Clara.

Narrator: The young man did not finish his sentence. He quickly turned around and lost

himself in the midst of the surging crowd. The next day at Capitan Tiyagos house

Tiya Isabel: Stop crying Hija!. . . Padre Damaso will eventually forgive him and he willbe absolved from excommunication!

Maria Clara: Its not that, Aunt Isabel, But the fact that the pope prohibits me from seeingor talking with Ibarra!

Tiya Isabel: But why? What is his reason?

do with the Popes order!

Narrator: Just then Capitan Tiyago arrived..

Tiya Isabel: Whats worrying you tiago? Tell us what took place in the convent!

Kapitan Tiyago: Just as I feared, Isabel its a big problem! Padre Damaso commanded me

to break the bond between Maria and Ibarra, Or he will damn my life and soul!

Maria Clara: and you agreed to that?

Narrator: Drown with sorrows, the girl cried again..

Kapitan Tiyago: Stop crying, Maria.. I myself am opposed to it because I owe Ibarra a lot

of money. . . FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS! But I cannot go again st the will of Padre

Damaso!

Maria Clara: Why father? Why is it that you cannot disobey Padre Damaso?

Narrator: One day, at the office of the newly arrived Captain-General.

Alperes: Your excellency, with your permission Senor Juan Crisostomo Ibarra wishes to

talk with you. . . He is outside waiting!

Kapitan Heneral: Senor Ibarra?.. The young man with whom Padre Damaso had an

altercation?

Alperes: Yes, sir and sentenced with excommunication..

Kapitan Heneral: Let him in.. I would like to talk to him!

Narrator: Once inside

Kapitan Heneral: Its a pleasure to know you, Senor Ibarra..

Ibarra: You surprised me with your kindness, your excellency.. In this country, I am not

regarded as a good citizen!

Kapitan Heneral: Regarding your altercation with Padre Damaso, I want to assure you

that the padres wont be able to harm you as long as I govern these island!

Ibarra: thank you very much, General

Kapitan heneral: I shall also talk to the archbishop concerning your excommunication! I,

too, love my own father and would have done if provoked as you had been!

Ibarra: Now I realize why people speak well of your excellency. The truth is that I have

no other wish but to see my country happy! I wish to see Spain and my country united

and fired by the same aspirations and common interests!

Kapitan Heneral: you complimented me for my kindness and understanding. Let me say

that you are an intelligent young man! Men of your education and manner of thinking

should saty in Europe. I may leave in months time. Would you come with me?

Ibarra: I shall never forget your excellencys interest in, and kindness to me. But this

place wheres my Fathers lived is I feel, The place where I should remain!

Kapitan Heneral: Not where they lived. . Where they died is the right expression, Senor

Ibarra. I know what happened to your Father!

Ibarra: It may not be easy but Im trying hard enough to forget the fate that had be fallen

my father. . . A man ought to live not for the past but for the present!

Narrator: After Ibarra had left, the Kapitan heneral called for the Alcalde.

Kapitan heneral: Senor Alcalde, I place Senor Ibarra under your protection. And let thisorder be known by the alferez. . Help Senyor Ibarra in all his patriotic project. .

Alkalde: It shall be done, General. . .

Narrator: Because of remorse, maria Clara fell ill. . .

Dra. Victorina: Kapitan Tiyago, I heard that your daughter is sick. That is why I brought

along my husband, Dr. De Espadana

Kapitan Tiyago: Gracias, Donya Victorina. The truth is that I would have sent for your

husband, anyway, had you not arrived?. . .

Narrator: And while Dr. De Espadana was exclaiming Maria Clara in her room..

Dra. Victorina: Capitan Tiyago, allow me the pleasure of introducing to you our cousin,

Don Alfonso Linares De Espadana, a God son of a relative of Padre Damaso, and private

secretary of all the ministers!

Narrator: Kapitan Tiyago was greatly pleased to hear that his guest had some connections

with Padre Damaso.

Kapitan Tiyago: I consider it a great honor to shake your hands, Senyor Linares..

Senyor Linares: I will likewise cherish the memory of this acquaintance

Narrator: and as the three of themCapitan Tiyago, Donya Victorina and Don Linares

were conversing in the hall, in came Padre Damaso so looking pale and gloomy

Padre Damaso: Santiago, is this true? That my grand child is sick?

Kapitan Tiyago: Yes Padre!

Narrator: Unmindful of the people around, Padre Damaso went straight to where Maria

Clara lay in bed. . .

Kapitan Tiyago: Padre Damaso loves his God daughter so much

Narrator: Padre Damaso went close to Maria Clara, and in a voice filled with unutterable

affection. . .

Padre Damaso: I will call a specialist to speed up your recovery. . . Im afraid Dr.

Espadana cannot cure your illness!

Maria Clara: Thank you, father. . . But I will get well in due time!

Narrator: Linares met Padre Damaso when the latter returned to the hall, and. . .

Padre Damaso: Who are you?

Linares: I am Alfonso Linares, the Godson of your brother-In-Law Carlicos!

Narrator: After making a close appraisal of the young man. . .

Linares: He started it in his letter

Padre Damaso: Im sorry I did not recognize you at once. You were not yet born when Isailed away from Spain. What does Carlicos want me to do for you?

Narrator: Padre Damaso anxiously read the letter, in a little while. . .

Padre Damaso: He requests that I find you a job and a wife. A jobwell, thats easy. But

a wife. . .

Linares: Padre, I am not a bit hurried on that line. . .

Narrator: Padre Damaso did not seem to hear Linares, and. . .

Padre Damaso: Ah. Now, I know! Come Let us talk to Santiago. Santiago, I would like to

talk t you in private. . . Come with us, Linares!

Narrator: And as the three entered a room, Donya Victorina and Dr. Espadana merely

stood behind their eyes exchanging meaningful glances

Narrator: It was at this juncture that Sinang, Maria Claras friend arrived. . .

Sinang: Is it true that Maria Clara is sick?

Tiya Isabel: Yes, Sinang. . But there is nothing to worry about. She is under the able care

of Dr. De Espadana

Narrator: As soon as Sinang had entered Maria Claras room. . .

Sinang: He sent me over to give you these tablets. . . You should take in three of these

everyday.

Maria Clara: Thank you Sinang, Didnt he sent me Letters?

Sinang: No.. But he asked me to tell you that he was going to see the archbishop abouthis excommunication

Maria Clara: Sinang. . . Please write to him in my behalf.. Tell him in the letter that hemust not think of me anymore!

Narrator: Sinang wanted to inquire, but then. . .

Tiya Isabel: Hija, Padre Damaso said that you should prepare yourself for confession

tonight. . . And your father wishes to know if he can now introduce to you a guest.

Narrator: The Girl nodded weak;y. In a matter of minutes, a new face was smiling at her

Kapitan Tiyago: Maria Clara, This is Don Alfonso Linares De Espadana.. Don Linares,She is my one and only child

Narrator: A strange feeling seized Linares as he gazed at the beautiful Maria Clara. It wasa love at first sight, to say the least.

Linares: Senorita, this is my first time to see an angel on earth

Narrator: Maria Claras face grew red upon hearing the compliment of the new

acquaintance. . .

Padre Damaso: You have nothing to be ashamed of Hija. . . He is no stranger to us!

Kapitan Tiyago: Thats right Maria Clara. . . Consider Don Linares, as an oldacquaintance.

Scene 7

Narrator: Meanwhile, Elias was talking with someone in a forest nearby. . .

Elias: Let us prevent the flow of blood Kapitan. . . Im sure Senyor Ibarra can help us. . .

He can present our grievances to the Kapitan Heneral with whom he has developed good

will and friendship

Kapitana Maria: I have my doubts mainly because he is rich All other rich men think

nothing except to accumulate more wealth

Elias: Give me a chance to try this peaceful plan. If I succeed, we will have prevented the

unnecessary flow of blood

Kapitana Maria: and if I Fail?

Elias: Then I will come and place myself under your command!

Narrator: The leader of the rebels smiled upon hearing those words. . .

Kapitana Maria: represent your people then and state the extent of their misfortunes.When do I see you next?

Elias: Four days from now, send a man to meet me at the seashore of San Diego, I shall

tell him what I shall have obtained from Senyor Ibarra

Elias: If he accepts my proposals, then we shall eventually have justice! If no I will be thefirst to rally and perish in the strife that we shall start

Kapitana Maria: I shall be waiting, Elias. . And for the sake of peace and freedom, I hopeyou will succeed in your plans

Scene 8

Narrator: The next day, at a secret place. . .

Secret Lady: You will have much more than this amount, Lucia. . . Well, are you in favor

Lucia: Yes maam, I will take care of that. .

Narrator: And after a few days later. . .

Lucia: Well, does your brother agree to my proposal Bruna?

Bruna: No

Lucia: Why tarsila? Why do you disagree?!

Bruna: Thats true!

Narrator: Silence reigned between the three of them after a while. . .

Bruna: Lucas, please lend us some moneyfour, three or two pesos. We have lost all that

Narrator: Meanwhile at the house of Kapitan Tiyago, Maria Clara, Linares, Sinang and

Victorina were engaged in a friendly conversation

Sinang: Like Ibarra, you have travelled to so many countries of the world

Linares: Maybe, Ibarra and I have the same interest

Narrator: Then all of a sudden, their conversations were interrupted

Donya Victorina: Linares, Go to the Alperez right now and challenge him to a fight or

Linares: But why Donya Victorina? What happened?

Donya Victorina: Because he and his Querida had insulted us! It is your duty to defend us

Cousin! Otherwise, Ill have everyone know your real identity!

Linares: Donya Victorina. . . Do be quiet. . .

Narrator: Just then Kapitan Tiyago arrived from the cockpit. Donya Victorina

immediately related to him what had transpired between her and Donya Consolacionthen. . .

Kapitan Tiyago: Well, what do you intend to do now?

Donya Victorina: My cousin Linarez should challenge the alperes to a fight! If he is not aman enough to do that, do not let him marry your daughter!

Narrator: Upon hearing those words, Maria Clara turned pale. She realized that what she

had been fearing all along was true after all- - That her father had agreed to give her inmarriage to Linares

Donya Victorina: O, why is Maria Clara crying?

Kapitan Tiyago: She was not told about our agreement with Padre Damaso. . That we

have arranged her marriage to Linares!

Scene 10

Narrator: That night, after Elias had presented the townspeoples grievances to Ibarra. .

Perfecta: What shall I tell the kapitan?

Elias: Tell him that failed. Senyor Ibarra holds the belief that situations would only

worsen should radical reforms be instituted this time!

Perfecta: Is that all?

Elias: Tell him too, that Elias, as long as there is life in him, then he will make good ofhis promise

Narrator: Meanwhile

Padre Damaso: alert your soldiers tomorrow night, Senyor Alperez! I received bad news

about a well organized scheme!

Alperez: Why, Padre Damaso? What is that bad news about?

Padre Damaso: I heard that the tulisanes will raid your barracks tomorrow night atexactly eight o clock

Alperes: CARAMBA! Is this true? Whether or not this is true, I will have my men

prepared!

Scene 11

Characters:

Ibarra

Guardia Sibil

Narrator: The next night, shortly before an hour of eight. . .

Elias: Senyor Ibarra! Better leave this place at once! Dont lose time!

Ibarra: Why elias?

Elias: Because an uprising will be held tonight, and I discovered that you will be namedas the perpetrator. . That

Ibarra: My GOD! Who could this soul less. . . But what shall I do? What?

Narrator: Then all of a sudden

(BANG! BANG! BANG!)

LONG LIVE CRISOSTOMO IBARRA! MABUHAY!

Narrator: Noise rent the air for quite some time. . . Shots of gunfire. . . Shouts. . . The

cries and groans of the hapless victims. . . Then silence reigned anew. . . A stony,

frightening silence!

Ibarra: The plot has been accomplished! There is nothing more I can do!

Elias: Nothing. . . Except to run away!

Narrator: Suddenly! Heavy knocks on the door startled them. . .

Guardia Sibil: Open the door in the name of the King of Spain or we will force our way

in!

Ibarra: It is futile to fight them! Your life would be in danger, too! Hide yourself, Elias. . .

Goodbye!

Elias: We will meet again someday, Senyor Ibarra. . . This I promise you

Narrator: As soon as Elias had fled to safety, Ibarra peacefully were in the company ofthe soldiers.

Ibarra: Where will you take me?

Guardia Sibil: Where else? To the barracks where all insurgents like you would pot in

jail!

Narrator: After a few minutes. . .

Elias: The Spaniards must not get hold of Senyor Ibarras treasures! Ill see to that!

Narrator: And after searching the whole house.. .

Elias: With this treasures, he might yet be saved!

Narrator: And thinking of all the papers that might incriminate Ibarra, Elias set fire on the

house and. . .

Elias: FIRE! Senyor Ibarra house is on fire!

Scene 12

Narrator: Meanwhile, in a place not far from the barracks. . .

Alferez: Hurry up or we will bear the brunt of the Alferez Ire! Had it not been for Ibarra,

this would not have happened at all. . .

Narrator:When at last Ibarra had come face to face with the alferez. . .

Ibarra: Senyor Alferez, I had nothing to do with what happened! I was at home retiring in

peace at the time . This is a frame up. I tell you! I have nothing to do with it!

Alferez: You dont have to explain to me, senyor Ibarra. The Decision is not mine to

give. As a good soldier, I only did my duty to order the arrest of all persons suspected of

having involvement in the revolt last night.

Scene 13

Characters:

Narrator: After a few days since the imprisonment of Ibarra. . .

Lolita: Maria Clara is getting married. . . It will be a grand wedding. I tell you!

Hermana Penchang: Shes getting married? To whom? Crisostomo is still in jail! Will the

wedding take place in Jail?!

Lolita: And who said she would be married to crisostomo?

Hermana Penchang: If not, whom else?

Lolita: To Don alfonso Linares, the cousin of Dr. and Donya Espadana!: Poor Ibarra. His house turned to ashes! He was imprisoned! Now he was about to

lose his sweetheart

Elias: After you have done this and no one comes, Dig in this place, here you will

discover Gold, plenty of it. It will all be yours. Take the Gold, get it and study! In you
