Burnout in the Holistic Doctor; Advanced Updates for Recoveryfrom Adrenal FatigueKrista Anderson-Ross, NDAre you primed for calm or chaos? Whether youre a medicalstudent, a new graduate studying for board exams or a

recently licensed practitioner, everyone faces substantial andmonumental demands and pressures, and with so little spaceand time for the rest and rejuvenation required to recover afterengaging in a medical training program. So, despite long-heldtraditions and tried and true principles for health and healing, the rigor of medical training offers little time to practice whatwe preach. Burnout, coupled with negative coping strategiesto survive the onerous pace of these programs can result inseverely compromised health and well-being. Understandingadrenal gland function and the adaptations the body makesto accommodate prolonged high stress states is essential forbuilding a foundation in chronically ill patients. This is a basictenet for good naturopathic care. This rst however, may needto be applied to the practitioner him or herselfPhysician Heal Thyself!

Integrative Primary Care Medical Home: Working Togetherto Fill the Gap for Primary Care Shortage in OregonVanessa Esteves, NDPortland Integrated Health & Sports Medicine is a team ofnine healthcare practitioners focusing on integrative primarycare located in NW Portland. More than 70% of our patientdemographic enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan/Medicaid. As a Tier 3 Patient-Centered Primary Care Home, we provide a modelclinic developed to transform the way we deliver primary healthcare while meeting and exceeding the increased demands ofMedicaid Expansion and care needs for Oregonians. Oregon hasset its goal to be a leader in the transformation and reform ofhealth care in our country. With more than 240,000 newly eligibleOregonians enrolling in Medicaid in the next few years, Oregonwill need the support of additional Primary Care Offices to meetthe clinical demands. This presentation explores the future ofprimary care and gives you the perspective from our integratedmedicine clinic.

The Role of Insight Meditation in Neurocognitive and SpiritualDevelopment: A Clinical Perspective

Craig Mehrmann, BSc The term meditation encompasses a broad variety of mental-training practices that vary between cultures and traditions, ranging from techniques designed to promote physical health, relaxation, and improved concentration, to exercises performedwith farther-reaching goals, such as developing a heightenedsense of well-being, cultivating altruistic behaviors, and, for some, attaining enlightenment. Meditation can be conceptualizedas complex emotional and attentional regulatory practices inwhich mental and somatic events are affected by specic mental-training practices. Western scientic interest in meditation hasgrown tremendously in recent years, reecting the increasedapplication of meditation-based modalities in clinical settings. However, the scientic study of meditation has, in large part, been conducted with minimal reference to its religious andspiritual origins. Buddhist traditions offer widely applied andhighly detailed theories about concentrative and diffuse forms ofmeditation, which have remained intrinsically unchanged for over2,500 years, and are presented in a systematic manner betting ascientic approach. Mindfulness-based therapeutic programs areall derivatives of traditional Buddhist meditation. The aspects ofBuddhist theory that have been scientically investigated thus farhave served mainstream psychology and cognitive neurosciencewell, making Buddhist theory a potential avenue for in-depthand critical scientic investigation. The study and integration ofEastern healing techniques may bring about a complementaryapproach that will help develop a more comprehensive and

holistic attitude toward patient care.Finding Common Ground: Naturopathic Approaches to Infertility Jaclyn Chasse, NDNaturopathic medicine offers an effective stand-alone approachto manage infertility, but many couples pursue a conventionalapproach with procedures like IUI (intrauterine insemination),IVF (in-vitro fertilization) and more. This presentation will teachstudents how to evaluate a couple for infertility and effectivelyachieve conception using naturopathic therapeutics alone.Additionally, Dr. Chasse will discuss how to nd common groundwith modern day fertility treatments, using naturopathic medicineto increase the safety and efficacy of these procedures.

The Healing Paradox: Befriending Illness in Order to Cure It Steven Goldsmith, MDIn order to craft an integrative model of medicine that helps ourpatients become well, we must rst understand the principlesthat determine whether any system of medicine, or any specictreatment, can cure people. But, when we examine the resultsof clinical medicine, epidemiological data and research, we ndthat these principles are counterintuitive. That is, in order to cureillness, a treatment must approach disease not as an adversary,

but as an ally; must work with disease and not against it. Twoprincipal laws of nature explain this central paradox of healing:the tendency of all living organisms to resist attempts to changethem; and the presence within disease itself of the self-healingresources that people need to mobilize in order to become well.Numerous examples of this healing paradox in its application toboth physical and psychological problems will be presented.

To Be PCP or Not To Be PCPThat is YOUR QuestionLaura Farr There is a big difference between being a Primary Care Providerand performing primary care services. Do you know thedifference? Do you know what it will mean for the kind of practiceyou want to step into or set up? The Affordable Care Act andthe looming problems of expensive health care and physicianshortages have catapulted our healthcare system into a bravenew world of primary care medical homes, performanceand quality metrics, and new reporting requirements andaccountability standards. None of this has to do with the medicalknowledge your are learning in naturopathic school! This seminarwill walk you through what you need to know to decide whetheryou want to be a primary care provider in this new healthcareparadigm, and what you will need to start learning today to makesure youre ready to set up your practice the right way as soon asyou graduate!

SPONSORED PRESENTATION: SEROYAL Introduction to UNDA Numbered Compounds &Biotherapeutic Drainage Amy Bader, ND This lecture will introduce you to the basic concepts andapplication of Biotherapeutic Drainage and UNDA NumberedCompounds used in daily clinical practice. These compoundsaddress both chronic and degenerative conditions. They have

a deep-acting ability to help people achieve and maintainoptimal health. The UNDA Numbered Compounds are uniquecombinations of homeopathically diluted plants and minerals. They are formulated using principles of Chinese medicine, anthroposophy and miasm theory. Dr. Bader will explain thetechnique of using these organ-specic remedies to openthe drainage routes of the body so that toxic material can bedischarged. UNDA Numbered Compounds have the ability to acton the individuals terrain, thereby affecting both the physical andemotional aspect of the patient. Dr. Bader will present a clinicalcase study to demonstrate treatment guidelines for variousconditions.

Everything You Need to Know About Integrative Cancer Care,But Did Not Know to Ask Ken Weizer, NDIntegrative cancer care is the right idea at the right time. Yet, mostnaturopaths and medical doctors do not know how to dialogue, collaborate, and create successful teams to serve their cancerpatients. In this lively, challenging and informative workshop,we will explore the ideas and strategies that hold us back fromcollaboration, and the practical steps to creating and sustainingviable, compassionate, holistic, and successful integrative cancercenters.

Classical Chinese MedicineHeiner Fruehauf, PhD,LAcDr. Fruehauf talks about the Promise of Ancient Medicine for aModern World: Possession Syndrome and Chinese StrategiesAgainst Chronic inammatory Syndrome (Fibromyalgia, ChronicFatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease).

Doctors as EntrepreneursNat Willis The focus of this session is to introduce the audience to theconcept of healers as entrepreneurs. Practitioners create optimalconditions for favorable outcomes for their patients. This requiresa specialized skill set built on rigorous academic, practical andexperience-based learning. Accurately assessing the health ofan individual patient and prescribing an appropriate treatmentprotocol is critical to developing and maintaining a healthypractice in your chosen eld. The same skills employed by thepractitioner externally to their patients must also be turnedinternally to the function of their business in order to perpetuatea healthy environment for the practice, and in a broader sense, the profession as a whole. We will help demystify the businessof successfully practicing medicine in todays competitiveenvironment by introducing participants to key vital signs thatare critical to comprehending the health of their practice. Wewill use practical examples and uncluttered language to helpdemystify the business of your practice. Participants will leavethe session empowered to be doctors, and entrepreneurs.

The GI Tract, Anxiety, Depression and CognitionSteven Sandberg-Lewis, ND The successful treatment of GERD requires a more completeunderstanding of the various mechanisms and causes ofreux than is typical of most physicians. This presentation willintroduce an algorithm and explain the approaches that yield

the best results in most patients with GERD. An explanation ofthe relationship between the GI tract and mental health andcognition will also be discussed.

The Need for Phytochemistry in Human HealthKevin Spelman, PhD, MCPP, CNSAlthough there is a long-standing disagreement between Westernpractitioners and practitioners of TCM and Ayurveda about theexistence of a Western energetic model, there also appears tobe no current model of the role of phytochemistry in humanhealth. We will explore a model which includes the concepts ofhormesis (the paradoxical effect of potentially toxic molecules),allostasis (stability through change), organ reserve (sustainingresilience and functional capacity) and human evolution, detailingwhy phytochemical exposure is crucial to human health andwhy medicinal plants are sensible therapeutics. This provides afoundation for understanding a truly broad and holistic modelof health, human relationship with plants/phytochemistry andpharmacology.

Person-Centered Approaches to Therapeutic Strategy:Self-Healing and Living Systems, Ancient to FutureLori Beth Stargrove, ND; Mitch Stargrove, ND,LAc History and philosophy, myth and systems theory informperson-centered approaches to health and medicine. Thispresentation reviews the mythology and history, world views andphilosophies that shaped the contrasting currents of physician

and folk practitioners, countryside and city health practices, andthe respective roles of self-healing and medicine. Models andmaps will be used to illustrate key mythopoietic and scienticconcepts of person-centered health dynamics, three-worldsmetaphysiology, therapeutic terrains, collaborative care, andinteractions at the levels of therapies and relationships. Exampleswill illustrate these principles, methods and tools for organizingperceptual and conceptual input, and weaving multidisciplinarytherapies into clinical practice models for personalized andevolving collaborative therapeutic strategies.

Meals, Mindfulness, & Moving Forward (M3): A Multi-Modal Approach to Addressing Cardiovascular Risk and BuildingResilience in Youths Suffering From PsychosisLynne Shinto, ND, MPH; Andie Thompson, BAIn order to help combat the side-effects associated withantipsychotic medications and address the negative symptomsof psychotic illness itselfwhich include a more sedentarylifestyle, lack of motivation, difficulty making choices, and astruggle to give voice to ones thoughts, feelings and desires,we have developed and will evaluate a multi-modal dynamicprogram that actively engages youths and their families in healthylifestyle practices. The project is a partnership with Clackamas,Multnomah, and Washington Countys Early Assessment andSupport Alliance (EASA) Program and with the Portland StateUniversity Regional Research Institute EASA Center of Excellence.

The Gut Connection Understanding the Role of DigestiveHealth in Chronic DiseaseRachel Fresco, LAc, PhDIn this presentation, Dr. Fresco will explore the topic of intestinalpermeability, aka leaky gut, and the role that yeast such ascandida, Lyme and unfriendly bacteria play in far-reaching healthconcerns such as autoimmune disorders, neurological conditions, mental disorders, heart disease and even cancer. New research onbiolms and bacterial endotoxins will be covered, as well as therelationship between these endotoxins and inammation.

The goal of this discussion is to expand understanding of therelationship between the gut and chronic inammatory disorders, and provide simple and clear steps that can be implemented

to get back on the road to health using plant-based medicine, nutrition and other integrative approaches.

Interactions, Polypharmacy and Collaborative Care in theMiddle-Aged and Beyond Lori Beth Stargrove, ND; Mitch Stargrove, ND,LAc A person-centered model of health and medicine enablescoordination of treatments and professional collaborationwithin a therapeutic strategy, particularly in middle-aged andelderly individuals using both pharmaceutical drugs and naturaltherapies. The popular perception of herb-drug and drug-nutrient

10 TH ANNUAL NMSA CONFERENCE, NATIONAL COLLEGE OF NATURAL MEDICINE

interactions is that they are unintended and problematic. Actually, purposeful coadministration of therapeutic agents within aclinical strategy represents a valuable approach to complex andevolving patient-centered care. As individuals age, they are morelikely to be prescribed pharmaceutical medications; many alsotake herbs and nutrients, which may interact. The occurrence ofpolypharmacy may be orchestrated or unsupervised, benecial

or risky, depending upon the individual patients physiology, health status and medical condition(s), and the communicationand collaboration among the involved healthcare providers. Thechallenges of multidisciplinary care that often involve diversephilosophical and clinical traditions necessitate a new paradigmof proactive polypharmacy that is focused on patient safety, therapeutic efficacy and evidence-informed clinical decision-making. The 4Cs paradigm is applied in framing operativeprinciples and practical guidelines for informed decision-making,case management and empowered self-healing.
