COMMITMENT
We ask for a one-year commitment toenter the program. Each term of sixto eight weeks will be followed by aone-week break to allow time to really”digest“ all the material from the class.There will also be a one-month holidaybreak during the Monsoon, the timing ofwhich depends upon the schedule of theteachings of His Holiness the DalaiLama, special events related to Dharma,and the visa situation of the majority ofstudents.
TLP: Tibetan Language Program 2011 at ThösamlingCommitment to ClassWe request that students consider thisprogram as their main practice for thisshort time in life and reduce other Dharmaactivities. The purpose of this request is tocreate an environment where studentswill be able to focus on learning the Tibet-an language thoroughly; a strong motiva-tion to achieve this goal should help avoidabsenteeism during the study period.
Tests and exams will occur at regularintervals. They are mandatory, with theintention to assess the studentsʼ progress.However, a competitive atmosphere willnot be encouraged. Thösamling Institute offers a two-yearTibetan language program. It provides allthe necessary tools to bring studentsfrom a beginner level through to com-municating directly with their Tibetanteachers. It has been developed for peoplelooking to deepen their understandingof the Dharma by studying it in Tibetanand serves as a solid foundation for thosewishing to follow the curriculum of Tibet-an monastic institutions or to becometranslators.
This program is for students who con-sider their study of Tibetan a priority andthere is regular assessment so that theycan monitor their own progress. It is afull-time course running for ten months ofthe year from February to November. Thecourse is divided into two semestersseparated with scheduled holidays.
Sometimes it looks asif nothing changes,
but of course we know better. Let’stake nature for example. This year’smonsoon was not a too heavy one, atleast not in Thosamling, but up in McLeod Ganj the rain always hits harderthan anywhere else in the region.No wall can withstand monsoon
wholly unaffected, and the scars therains left now wait to be wiped away inwintertime, which means: the list formaintenance work is growing daily.

YEAR ONESubject Focusand Class Structure:
During the first semester, the class willmainly focus on colloquial Tibetan lang-uage. In the second part of the year wewill prioritize the basics of Dharma andgrammar.
Each week there are ten hours ofclass time in which new vocabulary andgrammatical structures are introducedand explained by the teacher. In addition,there are nine hours of conversationclasses, at which time the studentspractice the material with native Tibetanspeaking conversation partners.
Term I: Colloquial Language: After learningthe alphabet, we will study basic sent-ences and vocabulary and then intro-duce ”honorific language“ and moreelaborate sentence structures. The goalis to learn a vast repertory of colloquialstructures and vocabulary to be able tocommunicate in daily life with Tibetanpeople.
Term II: Dharma Literature & Grammar: Wewill study basic Dharma vocabulary andgeneral teachings such as refuge andso forth, and combine it with traditionalgrammar. The texts to study will be chosenby the teacher.
Daily ScheduleMorning: 2.5 hrs, 5 days a week. FormalLanguage instruction; a Tibetan teacherwill lead the course.Afternoon: 2 hours, 5 days a week. Theconversation classʼs main purpose is toput into practice the material given in themorning class, with review of new andold material as well as chatting. EachTibetan conversation partner will assisttwo students only. The conversationclass is compulsory.

I Philosophical class: given in Tibetan byGeshe Tsewang Nyima (our residentteacher), translated intoEnglish. The morningclass is theoretical, theafternoon class is focusedon debate practice.
This class is direct-ed to students who want to follow thephilosophical class but are not used tothe traditional debatestyle of studies. We willstudy the specific term-inology & train in debatein Tibetan, based on the firstchapters of ʻDudraʼ (collected topics).
II Spoken Dharma: The goal of this classis to acquire the skills needed to under-stand oral teachings on the generaltopics of Dharma. The material to studyis drawn from a series of teachings thatour resident teacher, Geshe TsewangNyima, gave specifically for use in thesecond-year language program, usingthe outlines of the Lamrim Chenmo.They are a clear and comprehensiveintroduction to importantDharma terminologyused by all schools ofTibetan Buddhism. Theyserve as a very effective toolto familiarize students with the format ofan oral teaching by a Tibetan Lama.
III Students might wish to combine thoseclasses with private class of conversationwith well-trained conversation partners.
The students of the second year mightchoose only one or both of the two mainclasses (Philosophy or Language).

hat is a pilgrimage?You probably set off feeling as youfeel most of the time. At first maybe
it’s still dark, the path not really visible.Everything rather hidden... Sometimes thepath gets still more diffuse, or even lostfor hours. Then company is consoling.Sometimes the way lies clearly visible infront of. Good weather, sun shining – a feeling of reassurance, happiness, safety.Then suddenly dense fog, isolation… Onehesitates to take another step, out of fear offalling, getting lost... A false step, and onehas to deal with pain, get along with it.Sometimes one helps, sometimes one getshelped. Somebody might carry your back-pack for a while. At some point you (have to)
take it back. Sometimes one goes alone,sometimes one walks with others.Sometimes one enjoys going ahead.Or dragging behind, wishing to be alone.Sometimes one doesn’t dare to goalone because it feels not like ’a(l)-one’,but rather like ’only-one’.Perhaps at some point you start wonderingwhether you chose the right goal… Or gotthe right directions… In the end you mightfind yourself where you intended to arrive.Different time, different place.Different mind?Everybody is on his/her own pilgrimage...(Life is a pilgrimage.)On the following pages, find directorSangmo’s story…

n July, His Holiness the Dalai Lamagave teachings in Jispa, Spiti. Forsome of us this was the chance togo to the north of India on a shortexcursion. In a rented little bus weset off for Manali. The trip was not
without risks as the Rothang pass hadbeen severely damaged by recentheavy rainfalls and already been closedseveral times that week.
Rothang literally means ʻpass ofthe corpsesʼ. The reason for this is thatoften, after the heavy winter seasons,corpses would become visible underthe melting snow – people who hadtried to cross the pass but had gotdefied by the heavy storms. (Strange-ly enough one of the mineral waterswhich you can buy in H.P. is calledʻRothangʼ… mmm, appetizing!)
We left Manali one early morning at4 am so that we would arrive at thepass in time to cross over in daylight.The drive gave us the feeling of sittingin a rollercoaster, and we had to tryreally hard to remain seated – nauseaincluded (for the stomach-sensitive).
The teachings were wonderful, andafter the concluding 1000-armed Chen-rezig initiation with His Holiness, Ge-she-la called us together to mentionthat visiting the Heruka Mountain wasa once-in-a-lifetime chance, and thatwe shouldnʼt miss it, now that we wereso close, especially after having alsoreceived a Heruka initiation from HisHoliness (before the Chenrezig initiation).
Our guesthouse was situated inKeylong, a small village not far fromJispa, on a height of about 3300 m,just opposite Drilbu Mountain, and theview from the restaurantʼs windowwent straight up to the peak. Some ofus prepared for the big day by walkingfrom Keylong to Kardang Gompa, amonastery on the slopes of DrilbuMountain from where we planned to
start our pilgrimage the following day.The six kilometres proved to be a re-warding exercise (see above).
ʻDrilbuʼ means ʻbellʼ by the way, & itstands for the bell in the Heruka BodyMandala (other sacred places beinglocated all over India and Nepal).

The resident nuns and monks ofthe beautiful monastery looked afterus admirably… At 4 am the next daywe were up and ready to set off. Fromthe start the small path was steep.After some minutes walk, Geshelastopped, turned round and said: “First,make prayers and prostrations to themountain”. And we all did, yet unawareof what lay ahead of us.
Just the evening before Geshelahad actually heard that the path wasnot without risks and that in the pastpeople had disappeared or even diedon the way up. Latter fact remainedhidden from the bigger part of thegroup… E.g. from Puntsok, a youngTaiwanese monk, who was unpre-pared and untrained for such a tour, asnobody could have told him before
caught up with us, took hishands, guiding and literallypulling and sometimes evendragging and pushing him –right to the very top. For hoursthey were joking, cheeringhim up and encouraging him…A great example of how Tibet-ans are able to take care of
their fellow companions with so muchcompassion and love. They were ex-tremely kind!
The 8 km walk up onto the passand a height of 4430 m (14536 feet)took us 7 hours. (The mountain peakitself is on a hight of 4565 m/14977

Coming closer to the top, the alt-itude started to take effect, and someof us began to experience severe pro-blems. Sometimes only 10, 20 stepswere possible, then yet another stopto reorganize body, heart, breathing...

Then suddenly we heard peoplesinging, as a group of men, womenand children approached from below.They were from Chamba, a valley inthe Himalayas, & chanted Tara pray-ers while walking ! master who had been in retreat heresome hundred years before. It was anamazing combination: the blessings ofthe holy place and the incredible viewof the snowy peaks of the Himalayanrange, and being in the company of aprecious teacher. Our group consistedof 8 different nationalities – 9 actually,in case one counted the local peoplewe met on the way!
As the end of the day drew closer,we couldnʼt stay much longer but beganthe walk down to Gondhala, where –after 5 more hours and 5 km steepdescend – the mini-bus was waiting topick us up & bring us over the Rothangpass back to Manali. We thank Gen-lhak not only for being our tour guide,but for the guidance he grants every-body every day at Thösamling!
