NISA CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT ANNUAL REPORT 2012/13
Dear Members: The past 12 months of my term in office has seen a number of changes
taking place throughout our Association. Although mostly positive, I will expand on these as
well as a few negative issues as I go through my report.
NISA Board: The first year in office for the Board has seen some unfortunate changes,
particularly during the early part of the year. The resignations of Roger Margereson in
August 2012 and Ann Findley in September 2012 were disappointing, however I would like
to thank Roger and Ann for their valued input during their short time with the Board. The
Boards decision to appoint David Hicks and Alistair Wilson as co-opted Directors to the
Board has proved to be an excellent choice. Alistair with his all-round knowledge of Figure
Skating has done an excellent job in his Technical Portfolio role. David, in his Commercial
Portfolio role is putting in place a number of commercial projects that will bring in vital
income for our Association. You will see from the Directors Annual Reports the amount of
work that Judy Clinton, David Hartley, Hilary Selby, Simon Briggs and of course Alistair and
David have put into delivering their individual Portfolios. I would also like to thank the Vice
President Mike Petrouis for his support and help particularly during my absence in January.
It has been a pleasure working with all the Board Members during a very busy first year of
office.
NISA Staff: You will be aware of the departure of the Chief Executive Officer Keith Horton in
October 2012. During the period without a CEO, the staff coped admirably and the
administration of the Association was not compromised in any way. The Board also agreed
that myself as Chairman with the support of the PA and Office Manager, in the absence of a
CEO, would take care of the management side of the Association. At this point I would like
to sincerely thank all of the NISA staff for their cooperation and understanding during this
difficult period of time. Whilst writing this report it has been announced that Nick Sellwood
will join NISA as the new CEO and will commence his duties with NISA on 8th April 2013. I’m
sure you will join me in welcoming Nick to the Association and wish him a long and
successful working relationship with NISA.
NISA Articles and General Rules: The Board is pleased to announce that the new proposed
Articles and General Rules are now ready to be presented to the Membership at the
AGM/EGM on 18th May 2013. Although long overdue, and after numerous meetings with
NISA’s Solicitors, NISA Members through consultation forums in Nottingham, London and
Edinburgh, the Board are confident that the new proposed Articles are now fit for purpose,
comply with Company Law and has references which are necessary in conforming with UK
Sports Self Assurance Directives. The Board now hope that the Membership will approve the
new proposed Articles and General Rules so that NISA can move forward in a positive
endeavour to deliver the necessary services to the Members.
Hosting of ISU Championships: NISA can be very proud of the successful staging of the
European Figure Skating Championships 2012 and the World Short Track Championships
2011. The financial success of these ISU events, particularly the Figure Championships, has
enabled NISA to ring fence funds generated from the Championships to invest back into
development initiatives for our skaters and coaches. Congratulation to both Organising
Committees for the fantastic organisation of these Championships. NISA are now bidding for
the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships, an application was presented to the ISU in
April 2013, the outcome will be known in June 2013.
Elite and Development Squads: Our Junior and Senior squad of Figure Skaters have seen
mixed performances and results this season. Many have improved their standard and
performance levels and achieved good results in many competitions. The legacy sponsorship
of a number of our elite skaters certainly helped them to achieve qualifying standards to ISU
Championships. Congratulations to our Short Track elite skaters who have surpassed UK
Sports medal targets in ISU Championships and ISU Events. We can now look forward to the
Sochi Winter Olympic Games in February 2014 and anticipate good results from our skaters.
Finance report: The accounts for the year ending September 2012 show an operating loss
for the financial year, however a large proportion of the loss was due to legal and
professional fees concerning the re-writing of the Articles and General Rules and AGM costs
relating to the election of Board Directors. You will also see from the accounts the
Associations reserves remain healthy and I would like to thank my Finance Committee
colleges and Board Members for their help in managing the Associations finances
throughout this financial year. The Board are confident that with new commercial initiatives
now being progressed we can look forward to successful financial years ahead.
Finally: My personal and grateful thanks to all NISA officials and volunteers for their
outstanding and committed work of which NISA are extremely grateful.
Ken Pendrey
NISA Chairman & President.
