COUNCIL David Parker, Moderator

Since the last Salem Presbytery meeting, the Salem Presbytery Council has met twice: on June 20 and July 18.

Action items are for Presbytery to consider at its August 6, 2013 Meeting:

• Council recommended adoption by Salem Presbytery of an overture from First Presbyterian-Boone endorsing Heath Rada of Western North Carolina Presbytery as Moderator of the 214th General Assembly.

ACTION:

12. Salem Presbytery approved adopting the overture from First Presbyterian Church, Boone, endorsing Heath Rada of Western North Carolina Presbytery as Moderator of the 214th General Assembly.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Salem Presbytery Council worked on the following matters not requiring action by Salem Presbytery:

Presbytery Meetings and Connections.

• To better build connections between congregations and the presbytery and to seek God’s grace as the presbytery conducts its business, Council will seek congregations to actively pray for the Presbytery’s work and ministry during the coming presbytery meetings. Presbytery Commissioners will be informed during its meetings of which congregations are praying for their meeting.

• To better build connections between Presbyteries in North Carolina, Council will explore the possibility of a shared meeting of our five North Carolina Presbytery Councils or their Representatives to talk about being reformed in these dynamic times. Topics will include Presbytery meetings, congregational transitions, and joint missions.

Budget, Business and Finance.

• While Salem Presbytery’s straits are not as dire as they were in the first quarter, they are still narrow, rocky and treacherous. Approximately one third of Salem’s member congregations do not contribute to the mission of Presbytery, diminishing the connectional character of the church at the roots of its vine.

Page 19: NINETY-NINTH STATED MEETING MINUTES OF …...478 NINETY-NINTH STATED MEETING MINUTES OF SALEM PRESBYTERY First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, North Carolina August 6, 2013 The Ninety-Ninth

496

• The Presbytery’s auditor noted that the Presbytery is the currently the guarantor of $2.5 million in loans from 6 congregations.

• Council received the complete auditor’s report as well as a summary prepared by the auditor. Council requested that a one-page, bullet point summary be prepared and distributed in the August presbytery packet.

• Budget and Finance will report further details to Salem Presbytery at its August meeting.

Churches in Transition.

• Presbytery has appointed a Conciliation Team relating to the inquiry of First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem PC(USA) concerning it being dismissed from PC(USA) with which it has been connected since 1862. Council is recruiting at least one additional Ruling Elder member of the team and is thankful for those Teaching Elders that have consented to serve. The mission of the Conciliation Team, in part, is to assist First Winston-Salem in discerning whether it should formally request dismissal from PC(USA).

• After discussing the Dismissal Policy revisions proposed by the Committee on Ministry in June, Council voted to request COM to consult the Advisory Opinion on The Trust Clause and Gracious Separation, updated in March 2013, and make adjustments to Salem Presbytery’s Dismissal Policy to reflect that binding legal opinion.

• Council decided in July that (a) the Dismissal Policy is not ripe for presentation to the Presbytery, (b) concurred with the Stated Clerk that it should be completely reconsidered rather than being amended piecemeal and (c) decided that the existing Dismissal Policy will apply to the currently pending inquiry of First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem and Memorial, Greensboro.

• The interim pastor has begun his work at First, Korean, Greensboro, bringing stability. The administrative commission is still in place.

• Lake Norman Fellowship’s (“LNF”) Teaching Elder has renounced the jurisdiction of PC(USA) and LNF has been welcomed into communion with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church without a dismissal vote of Salem Presbytery. BB&T has lent considerable funds to LNF which remain guaranteed by Salem. Salem has written BB&T related to the property, requesting monthly reports on the service of the loan.

Received as Information.

• The Presbytery office is back online. Pastor John Johnson is under contract to maintain the website during staff adjustments which adjustments have also necessitated the hiring of two shorter term, part-time employees. while Bre is recovering from work-related injury.

• Salem Presbytery staff are facilitating Stewardship workshop, Education events (including one that will feature Roger Nishioka, the October Older Adult Conference in Atlanta, the Youth Triennium, revitalizing Salem Presbytery’s PYC – Presbyterian Youth Connection, and Salem Presbytery’s participation in The Self-Development of People including sending representatives to attend a SDOP event on September 27-28 in New Hope Presbytery as well as working with the Commissioned Ruling Elders group of Salem Presbytery.

• The Stated Clerk and Council Moderator continue to work toward developing a Manual as per the New Form of Government for Salem Presbytery and would cherish volunteers for this project!

SALEM PRESBYTERY CONSENT AGENDA

August 6, 2013

Unanimous Consent (General Consent) is used when there seems to be no opposition in routine business or on questions of little importance. It can be used to adopt a motion without the steps of stating the question and putting the motion to a formal vote, or it can be used to take action without even the formality of a motion. [Robert’s Rules] Unanimous Consent does not necessarily imply that every member is in favor of the proposed action; it may only mean that the opposition, feeling that it is useless to oppose or discuss the matter, simply acquiesces. [Robert’s Rules] Any Consent Agenda item shall be pulled from the agenda for separate consideration, upon request of any member of the assembly. Such extraction is not debatable. How the Consent Agenda works: • The Moderator will ask if there is any objection to any of the items in the Agenda. • If there are no objections the Moderator will, after appropriate pause, declare approval. • Any item on the Agenda to which there is an objection is removed and placed on the docket

for separate discussion.

Recommendations: Move approval of the Consent Agenda, which includes the following recommendations from the:

Committee on Ministry Report (G): HONORABLE RETIREMENT CA 1. That the Reverend Fred Coates be granted the status of Honorably Retired effective November 3,

2013. And that a Service of Retirement be held at the November 9, 2013 Presbytery Meeting.

SALEM PRESBYTERY EXAMINATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT

William Hoyle, Moderator August 6, 2013

In context of the committee’s examination, the pastors mentioned in the following pages were asked those questions that were required through the endorsement of the Peace, Purity and Unity Special Committee’s Report. There were no declared departures from the essential tenets of the Church. In addition, Examination Committee members were given additional resources for the examination including the P.U.P. Committee’s suggested questions. The Examinations Committee is pleased to report the successful examinations of the following ministers:

• Rev. Eulando Henton, from Charlotte Presbytery, to serve as Pastor at Mt. Tabor.

• Rev. Brian Daoust, from Denver Presbytery, to serve in a validated ministry as Director of Christian Education and Youth at First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.

Old Providence. Rev. Eulando Henton Statement of Faith

I believe in God, the Holy One of Israel, the Creator of all that is seen and unseen, who governs all things with loving providence. God’s special creation was humanity, formed in God’s own image. Yet, our first parents rebelled against God. Their sin, alienating them and the whole creation from God, set them on the path of decay and death. Desiring reconciliation, the holy and loving God elected Abraham and Sarah, liberated the Israelites from slavery, and established a covenant relationship with them at Sinai. This is the only God worthy of our worship, obedience, and trust. I believe in Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, the Lamb slain as an atonement for our sin, the incarnation of God’s self, whose name is above every name. Jesus came preaching the reign of God and calling all to repentance. According to God’s own foreknowledge and plan, Jesus was unjustly condemned and crucified. The good news is that God raised him from the dead. In the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ God performed a unique and final act of salvation which broke the power of sin and death, established a new covenant to reconcile people from every nation, tribe, and language to God, and opened the door to eternal life. We now await the full coming of the reign of God in the Lord Jesus Christ when the banquet table is set in a new heaven and a new earth. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the wind and fire of God, the Counselor, the giver of life, and the indwelling presence of Christ. The Holy Spirit unites us with the Lord Jesus Christ and, by grace through faith, gives to us the very righteousness of Jesus. The Holy Spirit enables us to live

the new life in Christ and transforms us so that we neither conform to the world nor remain slaves to our old selves. The presence of the Holy Spirit unifies believers and makes the church the body of Christ. The Spirit gives us understanding of the Bible, which is the inspired word of God, our authority in all that pertains to the life of faith. The Spirit empowers the two sacraments of the church: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The Spirit moves over the waters of baptism washing away sin, welcoming us into the church, and uniting us with Christ in his death and resurrection. The Spirit makes the Lord’s Supper a remembrance of the last meal our Lord shared with his disciples, a thanksgiving for the price paid for our redemption, a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, and a union with Christ and all believers. The gifts and the anointing of the Holy Spirit empower the church to fulfill the Great Commission as we await the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Rev. Eulando Henton Faith Journey

I was born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi and grew up just outside of Memphis,

Tennessee. I have two younger sisters and two awesome parents. Although our home was filled

with love and laughter, we were not a family that attended church.

By the time I was in high school I had a growing spiritual hunger and curiosity. I

scratched that itch by listening to the preaching of Charles Stanley and Charles Swindoll while

driving to my after-school job in a grocery store. Strangely, it was there where I first heard a call

to ministry. One day I was scanning groceries and a woman that I had never seen before at this

neighborhood store came to my cash register. She looked straight at me and said, “You’re called

to be a preacher.” Although my mother had taught me to be polite, I quickly responded, “Lady,

you’re out of your mind.”

Shortly after that experience I read three books: Why I’m A Roman Catholic, Why I’m A

Baptist, and Why I’m A Presbyterian. Knowing nothing about denominations or doctrinal

orthodoxy, I found comfort in the line that read, “Presbyterians are people of the middle way.”

So I became a Cumberland Presbyterian and enrolled at Bethel College where I studied Religion

and Christian Education.

At Bethel, my teacher and mentor, William Ramsay, encouraged me to consider the

Presbyterian Church U.S.A. In the summer of 1992 I joined Idlewild Presbyterian Church in

Memphis. I attended Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. After seminary I worked for

a year and a half as a teaching assistant for special needs children. For the past fifteen years I

have been in ministry in North Carolina and Tennessee. On October 15, 2011 I married the love

of my life, Hyun Lee, and have been living in marital bliss…Praise the Lord for Eharmony! I

have a passion for leading people into a relationship with Jesus Christ and helping them grow in

that relationship. In my spare time I like jazz and video games. Today my parents and sisters

attend a wonderful church in Power Springs, Georgia. God is good!

Rev. Brian Daoust Statement of Belief I believe in God who is a heavenly parent, a mother and father to all of us. I believe God is creator of all there is, that he continues to sustain us daily and lead and direct us through the Holy Spirit and the teachings of his son, Jesus, who lived to teach us and died to redeem us. He died and rose again and saved us all from our sins. I believe that God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit are one Holy Trinity, and that they have always existed together and as one in three persons. I believe God sent Jesus as his son, and came as God incarnate to live a life of obedience and example, a unique witness to God’s word and die a death that atones for all of our sins. I believe that justice is getting what we deserve, that mercy is not getting the punishment we deserve, and that grace is getting a gift we do not deserve and cannot earn. I believe that the death and resurrection of Christ that atones for our sins and was the ultimate triumph over and defeat of death is a gift of grace from God. I do not believe that grace is our reward for the deeds we do and the words we profess, but rather all we do to honor God and follow God’s call is our response to that grace. I believe that the Church is the body of Christ in this world, acting as his hands in feet in a world in need. I believe that his words for us to love one another with the same radical love he embodied and to go and make disciples of all peoples is a call for all believers, and that we are not alone in our daily struggle to love one another so fully and boldly. I believe Jesus is our example of how to live righteously. I believe that God loves us just as we are and that he loves us too much to leave us this way. And for this reason, he sent his son as an example and all the prophets and apostles as teachers and guides that might direct our feet through their lives, their deeds, their struggles and failures, and the words of scripture that were recorded through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I believe that God calls us through these teachers to seek justice for his creation, to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and in prison, champion the outcast and oppressed, care for the whole of creation, and worship and glorify God forever. I believe that Scripture is the inspired Word of God and our best insight to God moving in history, guiding his people in love and challenge, and that it is alive and teaching us today. I believe that nothing we do, not mission, not worship, not service, not the study or proclamation of Scripture can be done apart from the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the community for which God creates us to be a part. I believe that the Sacraments are acts which Christ performed and instituted, in which anyone can partake, and are the way in which we experience the real presence of God. I believe in one baptism for the remission of sins and that because Christ chose us before we chose Christ, the symbolism and power of the act is not mitigated by age or understanding of the baptized. I

believe all who profess Christ should be welcome at the communion table and that God is truly present in the breaking and eating of the bread and sharing of the cup. I believe our faith alone is necessary, and that true faith inspires and requires bold and right action, both justice and mercy, and that we can only know what is required by walking humbly with our God in prayer and in the fellowship of other believers, following the example of Christ with the support, the energy, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And I believe that created in God’s image, we are created with deeply love and wondrous imagination, that are the only tools we need to do what we’ve been called to do.

Rev. Brian Daoust My Faith Journey

I grew up attending a Presbyterian church in Charlotte, NC with my mother each week. It was important to her that we go every single week. I was very young when I expressed how eager I was to grow up so I could skip church just like dad. He overheard this and began going with us every week and has been going ever since. While my parents rarely openly discussed faith at home, they did make it a priority for us to be present in church, Sunday school, and youth group well into my late teens. There was never a question of whether we would go or not. It took priority over all other commitments and taught me that their faith was the priority in their lives.

Being in the midst of so many other strong believers and being there so often and so consistently, challenged me to constantly examine and grow in my faith that was introduced to me at such a young age. While I never had a conversion moment, my year in confirmation was a turning point for my belief as I came to a very clear understanding suddenly that my faith was important during the week and everywhere I went and not just on Sundays. I became very active in leadership roles in our youth group, youth council, and as a chaplain in our Boy Scout troop for just this reason. I found I was eager not just to grow in my own faith, but to share my faith and help others in growing in theirs.

I went to college with aspirations and leanings toward law, and a possible career with the FBI. It was early on, however, when I had an opportunity to work for my hometown District Attorney and then at a church camp in the same summer. After weeks of seeing kids I knew marched into the courtroom in orange jumpsuits and shackles, working at camp with kids of all backgrounds in a place that surrounded them with role models and instilled them with faith, hope, and love, was a call I couldn’t ignore. I switched from the prosecutorial end of things to the preventative. I wanted to work with kids and to share what had been shared with me throughout my faith journey.

For me, faith was not an Emmaus experience or lightning bolt. Faith was the journey I took with God, who had been introduced to me very early on. Like a relationship with a parent, it was one that simply developed, grew, changed, and was tested over my years. My own faith

has always been solidly rooted in the challenging verses of how we lead our lives and share our gifts and resources. Micah 6:8, as a dual edged charge to see both mercy and justice by walking humbly with God, the Great Commission to make disciples, the imperative to love one another, the clear expectation by Christ and the prophets to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and in prison, and bring the homeless right into our homes were calls that resonated with and challenged me.

But how was I to share this call that I felt was not for me alone, but for all of us as believers, and direly important to the young people for whom I cared? I have always loved the passage where Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd and that the sheep know his voice and follow. Having spent my fair share of time around animals, I know how true this is, for farm animals and for pets. What was always clear to me is that you can always recognize a familiar voice, and our familiarity with God’s voice comes in reading scripture and in prayer. The certainty I had in God’s call throughout my life, from organizations I joined, to people I helped, to the college I chose and career I wanted to pursue, came from my time in prayer and scripture and the wise counsel of my family and church family. God’s voice was familiar because of those experiences.

My decision to pursue my call to ministry and to work with young people came from my deep passion for familiarizing young people with the voice of the One who calls them to love one another as God first loved us. I want the education, the training, and the wisdom of others to do just that. This led me to my first call as an Associate Pastor for Youth and Young Adults in Denver, CO, and now as the Director of Christian Education and Youth at First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, NC.

Rev. Reggie Weaver A Statement of Faith

Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the power of the Holy Spirit, I believe in the one triune God. God's work in the world is revealed in the Bible, the unique and authoritative witness to God. Through scripture we come to know how God created the world, acted in human history, and formed the community of God’s people. Through scripture, God continues to speak to us and guide our lives in the way of Christ. I believe in Jesus Christ, fully human and fully God, whose life, death and resurrection bears witness to God’s work of redemption and reconciliation. Christ lived in perfect obedience to God. Christ proclaimed and embodied the reign of God, calling all to repent and believe the good news of God’s kingdom. Christ lived in perfect love for humanity: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, giving sight to the blind, healing the sick and comforting the brokenhearted, blessing children and eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners and offering his life for the sins of the world. He rejected the powers of sin and death, which alienate humankind

from God and from one another. Through death on the cross he unmasked them. Through his resurrection he conquered them and reveals to all that death is not the final word. I believe in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. God created the world and called it good, and lives in relationship with creation with faithfulness, justice, love and freedom. All of humankind, of every gender, condition, race and ethnicity, is made in the image of God. We are created to live in communion with God and with one another. Yet, in captivity to sin we fail to recognize the image of God in our neighbor. In captivity to sin we fail to live in community, choosing instead to live in alienation from God and neighbor. Still, God remains faithful. Through Christ, the world has been reconciled to God, and called to a new life, no longer captive to sin, but freed to obey God and love God and neighbor. I believe in the Holy Spirit, through whom God brings us to faith, justifies and sanctifies us. In the waters of baptism, the Spirit claims us and enables us to resist and reject the claims of sin and death on our lives. The Spirit sets us free to obey God and to live in communion with God and neighbor. By the Holy Spirit are we able to accept the call to live new lives reconciled to God. This Spirit, which was upon Christ during his ministry, inspires, guides, and empowers the Church to proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom. The Church is the Body of Christ in the world. As members of Christ’s body, we gather for worship, care for one another, grow in faith, celebrate the sacraments, and serve Christ in the world. The sacraments of baptism and communion strengthen the Church, and remind us of our common identity in Christ. They are outward, visible signs of our inward connection to Christ and to one another through the Holy Spirit. In baptism, we are welcomed into Christ’s body and marked through the water and Spirit as children of God. In communion, we are nurtured in our faith by the promise of Christ and by his real presence with us. The elements of bread and wine remind us of his life, death, and resurrection, and bring us into the presence of the risen Lord to commune with him. As the joyful feast of the people of God, communion is also a time in which we discern Christ’s presence in one another as the community of faith. Through these sacraments, God is at work calling, nourishing, and renewing the Church in this world.

Rev. Reggie Weaver A Faith Journey

If I had to mark a starting place for my faith journey, I would say it began when I was a

six year old, being raised in a Baptist church (if that can be forgiven) in Mobile, AL.

That’s the age at which I was baptized. The custom in that church was that the congregation and choir would sing choruses continually until each person had been baptized. I remember that as the pastor pulled me up from the waters, the choir was singing an old gospel refrain, “Walk in the Light/ The beautiful light/ Walk where the dew drops of mercy shine bright/ Shine all around us by day and by night/ Jesus is the Light of the world.” I think the congregation understood that as I grew up I would grow more and more aware of the darkness in the world, darkness in the form of injustice, violence, racism, hunger, greed, disease, and all the other the other signs of brokenness we see. When I did, they knew that it would be easy to feel overwhelmed. Yet through that sacrament, that song, and the subsequent nurture that they and

513

other congregations would provide, they were reminding me that there is a light in this world that no darkness can ever overcome. I did not know the word “vocation” at that time, but that marked the beginning of my understanding that I am part of a people who are called to, both, “walk in” and bear witness to that Light. I remain aware that I do this, not alone, but as part of a community of people who nurture each other through song, through prayer, through teaching and support, and through the occasional word of challenge. Yet, as Paul reminded the Corinthians, each of us is given particular gifts to contribute to the Body. So as the journey continued, I discerned that one of the ways that God has called me to bear witness is through the vocation of pastoral ministry. That sense of call came gradually. A few years after I was baptized, my family joined a Presbyterian church. That congregation strongly encouraged children and youth to be, not only present, but leaders in worship. I had many opportunities to do so. I was also very involved in other areas of the congregation’s ministry. Partly because of that, people were frequently telling me, “You’re going to be a pastor.” While I’d always had a thought in the back of my mind that that might be the case, I wanted to be sure that I was really living into my sense of vocation, and not simply the expectations of others. Because of that, I kind of ran from the possibility, until I went to college. There I studied political science, and became ever more aware of the “darkness” in our world, particularly in the way it was manifest in our conflicts with each other for power, and led to a period of questioning about what my faith had to say about these things. I went to seminary to address these questions, assuming that I would either drop out, or graduate, then pursue some other vocation. However, the clarity about a call to ministry came during my time as an intern in a multicultural congregation in Atlanta. That experience affirmed my gifts for ministry, as well a particular interest in multicultural ministry. As my call has developed, I have taken great joy in helping congregations to discern ways that God calls us to appreciate and affirm the richness of the Body of Christ, and the ways that our differences help to deepen our faith as individuals and a community.

Rev. William Stephen Hannah Statement of Faith

I believe in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity. Each of these three persons of the Trinity helps us to better understand God, experience God, and grow in our relationship with God. God the Father is the creator of all that is and the One who called humanity into community with God, a covenant relationship in which God continues to nurture us as we strive to fulfill God’s purposes in our lives. Jesus is the fully human and fully divine Son of God whose life and ministry revealed to us God’s reconciling plan of love, grace, and salvation. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ were and are the witness to God’s reconciling act on behalf of humanity, allowing our sins to be forgiven and, thus, our relationship with God to be restored and complete. The Holy Spirit is the mysterious, yet powerful, force of God that justifies us by grace through faith, enabling us to love God and neighbor, and binding us to the Body of Christ.

Baptism is the sign and seal of God’s grace and incorporation into Christ. It is in baptism that we participate in Jesus’ death and resurrection, dying to what separates us from God and being raised to newness of life in Jesus. Baptism is God’s gift of grace and also God’s summons to respond to that grace in faithfulness and discipleship. The Lord’s Supper is the sign and seal of eating and drinking in communion with the crucified and risen Lord. It is at the Lord’s Table that we are renewed and empowered by the memory of Christ’s life, death, resurrection, and promise to return. It is at the Lord’s Table that we remember Christ’s pledge of undying love and his continuing presence with his people. During the Lord’s Supper, God’s people are in communion with Christ and with all who belong to Christ, united with the world wide Church and joined with the faithful in heaven and on earth.

I believe that Scripture is the inspired Word of God, the primary witness to God’s self-revelation. The reading, hearing, and preaching of Scripture are central to Christian worship and thus a central tenet of our Presbyterian faith. The Christian community bears witness to God as proclaimed in Holy Scripture, which is where the church finds truth, inspiration, and instruction for daily living.

I believe that the church is the Body of Christ in the world with Christ as its head. Christ calls the Church into being, giving it all that is necessary for its mission to the world and its service to God. The confessions of our church give witness to God’s revealing activity as we have experienced and interpreted it. As a lifelong Presbyterian, I believe in the essential tenets of the Reformed faith and follow the polity of our church. Christ is my model for how to bear witness to God in my life and I respond out of my gratitude for God’s grace and love.

Rev. Steve Hannah Faith Journey

Two of the earliest memories I can recall have a great deal to do with my decision later in life to become a Presbyterian minister. The first of these memories is of my grandmother. I do not believe the Lord has ever put a kinder, more gentle soul on this earth. Her love and support have been a tremendous influence in my life. She was never far from her treasured King James Bible and many were the times she read stories from this Bible to me. And, of course, she had a quote from Scripture for every occasion.

The second memory is that of growing up in The Second Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, NC. This was a vibrant church, full of life under Rev. Charles McGuirt at that time. It was an exciting place for a youngster such as myself to hear the wonderful stories of the Bible and begin to form my understanding of the Christian faith. The lessons learned there are still very much with me.

As a young adult I entered military service and served one tour of duty in Vietnam. Then I completed a degree in English Literature from Lenoir Rhyne College. After college I joined my father in a residential construction business he owned.

As my father began to approach retirement age, I was forced to reconsider what my future path was to be. So it was back to school again for degrees in Business Administration and Accounting. I then went to work at Belk Brothers, Inc., in Charlotte, as an Internal Auditor.

It was during these years as an accountant that I first began to feel a sense of call to ministry. I struggled with this sense of call for some time, trying to discern its true nature. Eventually I came to understand that the Lord was truly calling me to make a big change in my life, the Lord was calling me into ministry!

So, sponsored by The Second Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, NC, I was off to three years of seminary at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. These were years of considerable challenge academically, but also years of growth and maturity in my Christian faith.

Following graduation from Union, I accepted a call to become the minister of The First Presbyterian Church of Bessemer City, NC. In many ways these years were challenging also, but effective ministry is always challenging. I have enjoyed my years in Bessemer City and feel that I have an extraordinarily good rapport with the people of this church. They have been good to me and I have been good to them and together we have been a faithful church.

During my years in Bessemer City I continued to work on my education as a minister in hopes of becoming a better minister. I completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. These studies deepened my knowledge of Scripture and of the mission of the church. Then I completed the two year program in pastoral counseling at The Presbyterian Samaritan Counseling Center in Charlotte. This experience has proven to be extremely valuable in helping me to better understand the spiritual and psychological issues facing church members.

Now I am honored to be a candidate for the position of minister of Fifth Creek and Old Providence churches in Salem Presbytery. I look forward to hopefully working with the people of these churches and this Presbytery.

As she rests from the labor of her hands and heart, may God’s blessing and strength be upon her, David, and their family in her time of reflection and retirement. “For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. Resolution The Presbytery of Salem offers its deepest appreciation for the faithful service to that part of God’s Kingdom we know as the Presbyterian Church USA, in which she has diligently labored as Educator, Chaplain, Pastor, and Counselor. As she rests from the labor of her hands and heart, may God’s blessing and strength be upon her, Rick, and their family in her time of reflection and retirement in Black Mountain, North Carolina. In tribute to her calling are these words from Robert Frost, “But yield who will to their separation , my object in living is to unite My avocation and my vocation, AS my two eyes make one in sight. Only where love and need are one, And the work is play for mortal stakes, Is the deed ever really done For Heaven and the future’s sakes. “

Resolution The Presbytery of Salem offers its deepest appreciation for the faithful service to that part of God’s Kingdom we know as the Presbyterian Church USA, in which Jeff has diligently labored as an Associate Pastor. Jeff’s ministry has always served the calling of all Christians to serve in mission to Christ’s Church. We offer thanks that Jeff has been a vessel through which God’s mission has grown in hearts, changed lives and been a source of healing and redemption. As he rests from the labor of his hands and heart, may God’s blessing and strength be upon him, Sallie, and their family in his time of reflection and retirement. We smile as we acknowledge that Jesus indeed made Jeff “fish for people” and that in his life a “river has run through it” and that river of the water of life, “flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb, through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life, with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of nations.” (Rev. 22) Thanks be to God.

Budget And Finance Update Joel Long, Moderator

Thank you for your continuing support of

Presbytery’s Mission!

Attached you will find two reports. Please review and share with your Session:

1) Church Support For Presbytery 2) Pledge Update from Salem Churches

Also, it is time to begin our planning for our 2014 budget. Moderators of our committees will be receiving materials to help them prepare for next year’s mission. Budget and Finance would like to challenge each church to pray about increasing its commitment in support of our 2014 budget.

Remember, Stewardship is a life adventure-365 days a year!
