Kids are born climbers, andplayground manufacturershave worked for years toprovide an outlet for thisdesire. A multitude ofclimbing equipment hasbeen created combiningsteel, wood and plastic. While these man-madestructures have addressedthe physical act of climbing, they don’t have the lookand feel of real rock, whichis part of the “adventure”of rock-climbing. Creatinga climbing structure thatallows kids to test theirabilities, as well as get intouch with Nature, is whatNicros’ Boulders are allabout.

Climbers are less likely to take an unexpectedfall due to a poorly designed foot placementbecause the features are “tennis shoe friendly”.The movement patterns were scaled to makethese three boulders climbable by kids of all ages. The features on the boulders are ergonomicallydesigned so that they t the natural hand positionin a comfortable way – not adding undue stress totendons or joints.

The aggregate lled outer coating gives the bouldera cool, dry, rocklike feel. Unlike our competitors,Nicros’ texture is built to last. We have perfected thetechnique to make the texture exactly right – it willalways feel like real rock and will not wear out likeother inferior products.

What are Playground Boulders? Nicros Boulders are the most realistic andfun-to-climb playground rocks available. Nicros’ designers used their experience to design a boulder thatsimulates the movements used while climbing real rock. Each Boulder has been carefully crafted from moldsof real rock to capture the diversity of climbing holds that only nature can create. This results in a playgroundpiece that is unequaled in terms of aesthetics and blending with a natural park setting.

Nicro-Mat TMThis seamless andaesthetically pleasinglanding surface utilizes afoam underlayment andpoured-in-place rubber

layer. Colored EPDMrubber (tiny granules)form the top layer andmultiple colors can bemixed to complement

the surrounding décor. The nished look is a surface

that transitions easily into adjacentsurfaces. When you land on Nicro-Mat TM

you’ll notice that while it doesn’t compress, the foam and rubberlayers absorb the force of your bodyweight.

Nicro-MatTM begins with the installation of a foam underlaymentthroughout the area. The thickness can vary depending on the need.Next, rubber buf ngs are mixed with special binding agents and laidatop the foam. When this cures, the EPDM rubber pieces are mixedusing the same process and poured in place atop the buf ngs tocreate a durable seamless rubber surface.

Nicros-DropZone TM uses the same foam underlayment as Nicro-Mat TM and Nicro-Mulch TM in a number of thicknesses. The top layeruses a carpet that is heat-bonded to a stiffer foam and is available in red, blue, and gray. Nicros-DropZone TM is a seamed product sit is easy to install, replace, or repair. It provides a cost savings over poured-in-place landing surface products.

Nicros-DropZone TM issturdy enough that youdon’t feel like you’rebottoming out when youland. The top layer ismore dense to spreadthe impact on the lessdense layers belowwhich results in a nice, soft catch.

    Nicros-DropZone TM is a

minimum of 5 ⅝ ” thick butcan be customized to be thicker.Installation starts with a two-inch layerof rebond foam. Next, a two-inch layer of urethane foam islaid, and last, a carpet bonded foam layer is added to the top.A special velcro tape is used to attach the seams and makethe surface into one seamless layer. It can be cleaned simplyby vacuuming and, should the need arise, sections can easilybe replaced should they become irreversibly soiled. With thissystem, the foam underlayment can be replaced without havingto replace the entire landing surface.

The Nicro-Mulch TM system has a natural woodsy feel because the toplayer is made of a rubber material that emulates the look of cedarchips or wood mulch. Because it is so realistic looking, Nicro-Mulch TM goes great with A.R.T.Wall TM or Nicrolite TM as the landing surface

matches the natural appearance of the climbing wall. Using rubbermulch chips as the top surface in Nicro-Mulch TM helps the surface toblend in with surroundings.

The top nished surface of Nicro-Mulch TM is dense so the surface iscomfortable to stand and walk on. The softer lower layers provide theabsorption to cushion falls.

    Nicro-Mulch TM

Construction of Nicro-Mulch TM begins with the installation of a foam underlayer throughout the area. Thisfoam is a minimum of four inches thick but can be installed thicker to meet your facility’s speci c needs.Once the base foam is installed, the rubber chunks are mixed with special binding agents and poured inplace atop the foam to create a durable seamless rubber landing surface that looks like cedar chips.

Shredded Rubber. From early climbing wall construction, two products seemed toprevail, pea gravel and shredded rubber. Over time, pea gravelhas fallen out of favor due to wear issues on ropes, anchors, andother equipment and the dust it creates. In its place, shreddedrubber triumphed.

Nicros offers two types of recycled shredded rubber chunks:black rubber and colored rubber. Both are economical, effectivechoices for landing surfaces. Each is low in odor, low in tirerubber content, free of steel wires and ber, and contain very

    little rubber dust.

Rubber comes infty pound bags, is

easy to install, andis easily replaceable.Landing in rubber hasa soft, absorptive feel. The rubber tends todissipate around where

the foot hits. It’s similarto landing in a sandbox.Raking the areas at thebase of the wall willkeep plenty of rubber inthe landing zones.

Shredded rubber is typically contained bybuilding a curb around the edge of wherethe rubber is placed. These curbs aretypically built from Nicro-Mat TM.

Landing Mats. The most popular landing surface for schools andbouldering walls is Nicros landing mats. We offer anumber of options to t a school’s needs. When thewall is not in use, the mats simply fold up and the matsare locked down with a closure system, thereby limitingaccess to the wall. Printed on the back of the mats arewarnings that state that the climbing wall is closed andno climbing is allowed without supervision.

Although there is no climbing industry standard thatspeci cally dictates the thickness or dimensions of alanding surface mat, Nicros recommends the landingsurface cover a minimum of eight feet from the baseof the wall and that it be suitably thick to protect aclimber’s fall.

Crash Pads. Large moveable crash pads can be used in conjunction with a non-uniform landing surface. (See the picture ofthe crash pads on the shredded rubber on the facing page.) Injuries can occur when crash pads are not placedcorrectly so it’s important to move the pad to avoid rolling an ankle while falling off the edge.

The shell of a crash pad isnormally made out of corduraor a similar strong fabricmaterial. The inside is madeof several thicknesses anddensities of foam. A zipper

is used for the fourth side sothe foam can be changed outor replaced without havingto purchase a new “shell”.Crash pads cushion a fall andoften feel better to land on inbouldering cave settings.

Nicros also makes custom pads which can exactly t your landing surface needs. The number of pads and theway they lay out will depend on the contours of your wall (see below).

    6’ 4’ 4 ¼ ” or 5”8’ 4’ 2 ¼ ” or 3”

Nicros offers eight mat systems thatconnect to the base of the climbing wall. All of our mats are made with at least a

1” Polyethylene foam and the remainingthickness is an open cell polyurethane. Thecovering is an 18 oz. vinyl and the mats are

    re retardant.

Auto Belays. Auto Belays have becomincreasingly popular as interest in climbing grows. They provide a way for climbers to climb withoutthe aid of a human belay partner – belaying is doneautomatically by this special device. Use of an AutoBelay eliminates many of the barriers of entry tothe sport of climbing for rst-time climbers. Nicroscarries only Auto Belays that have been developedand tested speci cally for climbing walls.

What they do. Climbers can clip inand climb without having to depend on a partner. When they get to the top of the climb or when theyfall, they are slowly returned to the ground.

Advantages. Auto Belays can helpdecrease staff time, eliminate the need for abelay partner, and increase climbing time forparticipants. The Auto Belay is especially goodfor facilities that offer birthday parties and groupevents so participants will have more climbing timewhile they are in the facility.

Auto Belay Styles. Nicros carriboth the Rose Redpoint Descender by MSA andthe Spectrum Auto Belay. Nicros customer servicerepresentatives will help you in choosing which oneis right for your facility.

Have you ever heard of anybody forgetting to clip intoan auto belay? Well, we couldn’t imagine it either. But, it happens...With the increasing popularity of rock climbing, indoor climbing gyms, and Auto Belays all across the country, the possibility of rockclimbing accidents also increases. Nicros is proud to introduce the patent pending Auto Belay Safety System™ (A.B.S.S.™) whichdetects when a climber has forgotten to clip into an Auto Belay and alerts the climber and the facility staff. This device providesclimbing wall operators a means of monitoring Auto Belay use on a climbing wall.

This innovative new product uses cutting edge technology to determine if a climber is on the wall climbing without being attachedto the Auto Belay device. A sensor on the bolt hanger detects when the Auto Belay line or rope is unclipped from the wall. Arraysof sensors detect a climber’s body crossing a pre-determined height. The logic system compares the inputs and determines if theAuto Belay is still attached to the wall when someone crosses the sensor eld of view. In this situation, an audible alarm will soundand a light will change color alerting the climber and facility staff. The height at which the activation of the system occurs can becustomized. If a person boulders above the area that senses the climber, the alarm will go off since the Auto Belay is attached tothe wall. In this way, the patent pending Auto Belay Safety System™ also acts as a warning system for boulderers who are too highon the wall.

    • Reminds users to clip in and double check • Protects surface area around bolt hanger from high traf c wear• Made of durable Aluminum alloy• Resilient etched letters• Easy to install on any climbing wall surface• Flush mounting security screws included• Twelve inches by ve inches• Can be included as a part of the patent pending Auto Belay Safety System TM

    • Should be used on all Auto Belays!

If the customer elects to purchase our standard assortment setthat typically comes with a climbing wall, it is common to add anadditional allotment of money in the contract for the routesettersto choose additional holds. A customer can choose speci chandholds from our extensive line, with a monetary allotment forhandholds in the contract.

Nicros has one of the most extensive lines ofhandholds in the industry. To see our full line ofproducts, visit www.nicros.com.

Nicros typically provides quotes as “turn-key” installations, which takes the worry out of the little things like handhold selection andnding all the operational gear. It is this attention to detail that sets Nicros apart from the competition and enables the customer’s

new climbing program to operate smoothly.

Each climbing wall quote includes a handhold package consisting of a complete array of color, size, and style of hold. If a speci c colorscheme is preferred (for example in an instance where route setters are not allowed to use colored tape route markers) we caneasily make your holds in almost any color scheme you wish.

If installing anA.R.T.WallTM or aNicroliteTM climbing wall, most customers requestthat the handholds betinted to match thesurface of the wall. This can be done at thesame time as tintingthe wall surface if acustomer has requested“handhold installation.”The handholds can alsobe tinted on the ground,

apart from the wall, aspictured here.

Nicros Handholds and Climbing Gear.Nicros offers superior quality handhold products and won “Editor’s Choice” in Climbing Magazine’s 2004 handhold review. Nicros usetensile testing to evaluate handhold matrix strength. Through this testing, we developed industry-leading Super-Mix TM which providsuperior texture, awesome strength, and a lightweight handhold product. In addition, we introduced our Extreme Hold Technology T

(patent pending) which allows us to make extremely large shapes at a fraction of the weight. These handholds are super strong andoffer Nicros’ same great texture.

Handhold Installation. Since the concretexture and tint of the climbing wall need time to cure, handholds cannot be installed immediately upon completion ofconstruction. Handhold installation is normally completed priorto the training session. Handhold installation is simply puttingthe handholds on the climbing wall with the most positive sidepointing upward. If speci c movement patterns are wanted, then our routesetting training is what you need.

Climbing Gear. nce climbing wall quotes are

ormally provided as turn-key,icros puts together a gear

ackage that will t your needs.icros carries everything fromarnesses and ropes to belayols and carabiners. The quoted

ackage includes enough gear toet your climbing program started.dditional gear packages are

vailable to add to your inventorynd for replacement.

Routesetting. Routesetting is the arranging of handholds in aeci c sequence to obtain a desired dif culty rating or movement pattern. Ourutesetters have the art and skill to create speci c movement patterns for allvels. Easier or harder climbs can be obtained through spacing and speci cold selection. Route setting and route setting training are important aspects

a successful climbing wall program and both are offered as an option. Amall segment on routesetting is covered in a R.O.P.E.S. Training Program or all-day training session can be tailored to speci cally cover route setting.
