Upward Bound

Initial Reactions:

● Am I qualified enough to tutor high schoolers?● A well organized program● Amazing relationships are/have been built through this program

Initial Goals for this Field Placement:

● To be able to help the students in my room (with schoolwork, study skills, etc.)

● To be become more than just a coach to the students I interact with● To improve my students self-esteem

Upward Bound: Responsibilities

● Assisted UB students with the homework given to them by their school teachers

● Checked in with each student at the beginning to ask them what they were working on, if they needed help with anything, and to check if they had their planner filled out

● Filled out an evaluation at the end of each session

Upward Bound: Technology

● Hope computers for researching information and finding helpful study sites● Laptops to access the students homework assignments and study materials● Access to more than one computer (in study room) and a printer would be

beneficial when looking for different/new ways of teaching students

Course/Text Connections

● At risk students can be students who have dropped out of school, abuse drugs, homeless, chronically absent, etc. (Finn-class lecture)

● At risk students are not covered by the IDEA→ not eligible for special education (Finn-class lecture)

● Students who are “at risk” need a structured environment and a private workspace to stay focused on the task at hand (Finn-class lecture)

● Individualized homework assignments and one-on-one attention may be required for that student's educational progression (Finn-class lecture)

Journal Article● Looked at effectiveness of out-of-school programs (OST) for at risk students● Analyzed 35 OST studies that included control or comparison groups● Meta-analysis indicated small, statistically significant positive effects of OST

programs on reading and mathematics for students involved. And found larger positive effects for specific tutoring programs

● OST programs for older students should be more recreationalthan those for younger students

● OST programs can have positive effects on theachievement of at-risk students.

Strengths of mine displayed during this placement:

1. I am approachable to the students-they feel comfortable coming to me for help.

2. I come prepared to teach study skills to the students.

3. I am sure to ask each student in my classroom about their week and how they are doing.

Areas to improve for next field placement:

1. I will have three different activities that are specific to the individual.

2. I will discuss the student's educational background/progress with their teacher on the first day.

3. When a student is acting out, I will speak to them about it immediately after.
