The Future of Food: A Vertical Farm in Philadelphia Farms that provide food for Philadelphians are moving further away from urban areas while the population is mmoving in the oppo-site direction. This design combines a vertical farm with a double skin facade to bring the idea of suatainable farming to young urbanites. The plants provide shading in Summer, allow light in during Winter, provide food, and clean the air. The double-skin facade reduces the load for mechanical HVAC systems. Sun shelves reflect light further into the interior of the building. The modular construction of the exteri-or faced reduces wast and on site construction time. The three part modular system progresses horizontally on the East facade and verti-cally on the South facade to provide shading.
College Prepatory Middle School, The Haverford School, Haverford, PA Situated in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, this private all-boys prep school is part of a vibrant independent school scene and competes with other private school in much the same way that colleges compete with each other. The new Middle School wraps around the existing performing arts building. Its relationship to the new Dining Hall helps define both the outer edge of the main campus area and the borders of the inner quad. The large retaing wall at the West side of the Dining Hall extends into the signifi-cantly sloped quad, dividing it into 2 more managable spaces; allowing these areas to thrive as communal spaces for the student body.

The Urban Survival Project, Portland, OR The challenge was to design and build a portable shelter suitable for use by a single homeless individual. The materials for this item had to be scavenged from the streets of Portland, OR. After firs studying Portland’s homeless population and their needs, I gathered ma-terials and designed and built a device that not only serves as a backpack, but also expands to become a single occupancy tent. Also, for further comfort, bicycle inner tubes and foam padding were repurposed to create a bed roll. These items were fiels tested and found not only to be quite water proof, but considerably more comfortable than originally imagined.
