First Day at School - Transition class 2017
Principals Message NCC is a place where students come each day; they come excited, eager and
appreciative to be part of a school that they love. They come with the knowledge that
NCC is a school where they are accepted. They come knowing that they are surrounded
by encouraging peers and supported by passionate teachers. They come knowing they
are part of a family.
Over the past weeks we have been on a journey to appoint school captains and students
in other leadership roles for 2017. It has been an opportunity and great chance for
students to really take time out to reflect on why they love NCC. It has been wonderful to
hear their stories.
Some of the things students have shared with us.
- I am who I am today, because of the
opportunities and support I have been given at
NCC.
- I like interacting with the little kids and NCC is like
family.
- I like to serve others because God has given me
lots.
- I have been at the school since I was little and want to give back.
- I love my school
Today I wish to once again publically congratulate our school captains who were
appointed for 2017. They are exceptional
leaders.
Congratulations to:
Ashleigh Epiha: Middle School Captain
Isabel Blundell: Middle School Vice Captain
Hannah Veale: Primary School Captain
Jackson Hoffman: Primary Vice Captain
I know each Student Leader appointed will bring different gifts and talents to their role. I
also know however that all students elected have the same passion for their school, desire
to honor God and a genuine love for their school.
Let’s enjoy each new day that our Lord blesses us with. I am sure we are going to have a
great year together.
Many blessings, Lara Hvala
This is what we got up to during our
first week…
We had so much fun!
NCC Dedication and Information Night 2017
This year NCC hosted our annual dedication, information and BBQ evening. We do this to
dedicate our new year to God, introduce new staff and celebrate with sharing a meal.
The dedication ceremony took place in the library where Mrs. Vanessa Lamboa opened in prayer,
Mrs. Hvala introduced new staff and School Captains. Mrs Jan Louttit prayed for all staff and Mrs.
Fourie prayed for our School Captains and College. Miss Ashleigh Epiha and Miss Hannah Veale
prayed and said grace before everyone enjoyed an awesome BBQ cooked by Mr Ben Hall.
Once all had shared a meal together parents and guardians went to see their child’s classroom
and were presented with what will be happening in class this year. The feedback we have
received was all very positive
It was a successful night and I would like to thank parents and volunteers for helping make the
night run smoothly.
So 3 cheers for the NCC Community…
Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!
Master Chef!
Food Tech 2017
We have started off 2017 with some fun in Food
Technology, we have made pancakes from a shaker
bottle to start with (much to the disgust of many who
thought we should be making our pancakes from
scratch), we have also made own pizza!
There are some amazing future” MasterChef”
contenders in our class as well as some serious
perfectionists. We have been very popular at break
time after these pracs and we love sharing with our
friends. Next we going to tackle our first South
African recipe and make some mini Milk Tarts. Watch
this space. Mrs. Pridgeon

ARTS
Greetings from the Arts department and what a great start to the year we have had from
Transition right through to Year 10! The range of gifts and talents shown already has been a joy
to experience as a new teacher at Nhulunbuy
Christian College.
In the art room Year 3-6 have been learning
about a Spanish architect named Antoni Gaudi
who is referred to as ‘God’s architect’. He
wanted people to see God’s creations in all
that surrounds us and designed many
interesting buildings and sculptures throughout
Spain.
Artist: Djinyupa Lisa Year 3
In Middle Years students have been introduced to physical theatre and how to use the dramatic
elements in creating narrative. We have focused particularly on the elements of tension and space
with senior years to create meaningful performances that send strong messages this term.
Warm regards, Cassandra Belfrage (Art and Drama teacher T-10)

New staff induction in Darwin
Transition work
Tell us about your family? I moved to Nhulunbuy by myself but down south in
Victoria I have an amazingly brave Sister and a beautiful niece. I have some
amazing friends and their kids all around Australia these days that I consider
family so I have a rather large family that I could talk about.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Depending on my mood, I could go exploring on a day trip, I could go to the beach, I could stay at home in
my pjs and watch one of my favourite movies or read a book. Or if my creative brain is working I could do
some craft. But I also am studying so a lot of that gets done in my spare time. When I’m in Melbourne
or Sydney I enjoy going to the Theatre.
Favourite Motto or Bible Verse
I guess my favourite motto is Carpe Diem - Seize the day, I don’t like to waste any opportunity to do
things and so seize today and do what you can because it may not be here tomorrow. One of my favourite
Bible verse that fits well with that motto is
Psalms 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.
What is interesting about you that others can ask you about?
In my 20s I loved going over to America for Summer camps. I have some great stories, especially falling
down a hole on the morning of the first camp the first year I went about an hour before campers arrived.
If you had a day to yourself, what would you do?
I think it would be a day of pampering, but it would be more of a girl’s day out with some friends.
Massage, nails, hair, a little bit of shopping, movies (Gold-class if it was an option), food, and laughter. If I
was in Melbourne I would go to see a theatre production.
What makes you laugh?
A good comedy or an evening at a comedy show. My friends I have plenty of friends who make me laugh
and sometimes without trying. Last year I went and saw Michael Winslow from the Police Academy movies
when he was in Darwin and I don’t think I have laughed that hard in years. He was great!!!!
What does NCC mean to you?
Being Chaplain at NCC allows me to share God in hopefully some tangible ways with students, staff and
families and the wider community. And it excites me to be part of the NCC community that wants to
share God with each other in our daily lives in classrooms and at home and in the general community.
Getting to know our School Chaplain……
How long have you been in Nhulunbuy? I moved here at the end of January this
year so not quite one whole month yet.
Many wonderful things happened at our school over the holidays and here is an update! Last year council approved the purchase of new plants for the college grounds. They are
slowly being planted throughout the school grounds.
Over the holidays the ART ROOM, SCIENCE ROOM and FOOD TECH room were fitted with
new acoustic ceilings. These rooms have been incredibly hard to teach in because of the
noise and work to improve those teaching spaces has been on our “wish list” for many
years! The difference is significant!
New pillows for the library have arrived. Fun new colors. Thanks P&F for purchasing these on
our behalf.
New fridges for our Food Tech and Canteen.
New air-conditioner was installed in the Middle School Classroom over the holidays.
Painting has started! Our oldest school buildings will get a facelift. Slowly, slowly but it will
look fabulous!
WOOD WORK
Welcome to Material Studies! We are thrilled to have
started the New Year with a new subject and the use of the
wonderful facility’s at the Nhulunbuy High School. We are
currently making wooden serving spoons. We look forward
to the year and the many exciting projects that we have
planned.

Do Hard Things - A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations
“Most people don't expect you to understand what we're going to
tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don't
expect you to care. And even if you care, they don't expect you
to do anything about it. And even if you do something about it,
they don't expect it to last. We do.”
- Alex and Brett
Do Hard Things is the Harris twins' revolutionary message in its purest
and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of
what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit
their potential.
Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from
responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history,
and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching
pad of life. Then they map out five powerful ways teens can
respond for personal and social change.
Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical
examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of an
already-happening teen revolution challenges a generation to lay claim to a brighter future,
starting today
Recommended Reading As we start a new year, the library has some lovely new books to
loan to students, staff and parents. I hope everyone will find
something enjoy and treasure the privilege of reading this year.
A moving story of the extraordinary friendship between a boy and
his fox, and their epic journey to be reunited. Beautifully illustrated by
multi-award winner, Jon Klassen
Pax was only a kit when his family was killed and he was rescued by
‘his boy', Peter. Now the country is at war and when his father enlists,
Peter has no choice but to move in with his grandfather.
Far worse than leaving home is the fact that he has to leave Pax
behind. But before Peter spends even one night under his
grandfather's roof he sneaks out into the night, determined to find his
beloved friend. This is the story of Peter, Pax, and their journeys back
to each other as war rampages throughout the country.

School newsletter articles
1. What is NAPLAN Online?
Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that NAPLAN will move to an online system for NAPLAN
testing.
In the Northern Territory, it is planned that schools will move to NAPLAN Online from 2018. Prior to this, NAPLAN
testing will continue to be conducted as a paper based test.
Significant planning, development, research and trials are occurring to ensure that Northern Territory schools are
ready to move to NAPLAN Online.
A move to NAPLAN Online will:
provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information for parents and
teachers;
enable tests to better meet the needs of all students, including students with a disability;
use ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions more suited to their ability, resulting in more targeted
assessment and precise results; and
ensure the precision and improved timing of the results will help teachers tailor their teaching more
specifically to student needs.
Detailed information and FAQs about NAPLAN Online are available on the ACARA website.
2. NAPLAN Online public demonstration site now open!
Visit the NAPLAN Online public demonstration site at www.nap.edu.au and try some questions and the platform.
You and your family can access and interact with the NAPLAN online public demonstration site to see and test the
system. You are encouraged to log on to test the site and provide feedback on how it works.
