Dr. George Marshall Award

The Annual Dr. George Marshal award is presented to an outstanding Norfolk General Hospital employee in honour of Dr. George Marshall who practiced at NGH and acted as our Employee Health

Physician. His caring approach prompted the Hospital to create this award in his honour. This year’s recipient is Robin Varnes.

Some excerpts from her nomination describe her as “very caring, considerate, and always kind with patients, families, staff and the entire health care team.” Robin had a hand in the introduction of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) to NGH, “Everyone who works with her gets to experience her kindness.” Robin participates with the local Health Science program with Simcoe Composite School. She grades case studies on her own time. Co-op students receive guidance with understanding health care positions on the floor. She is also involved with her children’s school. Robin stepped up our interim Nurse Manager for 3E and 3B. “This kept the entire floor running well and she actively participated in positive changes as well as updating and creating much needed protocols.”

Robin Varnes accepted the Dr. George Marshall Award stating “I am shocked and honoured at the same time. I’m not sure I deserve this any more than anyone else at all for the same reasons – we take care of our patients as best we can. I’d like to thank you all, thank Kelly and thank all my mentors throughout my career”

Joseph De Buglio reviewed Norfolk General Hospital Simcoe Ontario — ✮ ✮ ✮ ✮ December 24 at 1:51pm

On December 20th, I had a sharp pain in my lower left back side. After putting up with it for 2 hours, my son took me to Emergency. From the time I arrived until

they started with meds to ease the pain was about an hour and a half. About an hour after that, they gave me a CT scan to confirm that I was passing Kidney Stones. Everyone there was helpful in trying to understand how much pain passing a kidney stone can be. I felt sorry for another lady who had her hand packed in ice and had bruises and cut on her face. It looked like she had a terrible fall, possibly from the snow storm earlier. She was there before me. It turned out that I was helped ahead of her. Part of me wanted to see her getting help ahead of me but at the same time, I was in so much pain, I wasn’t thinking straight. I hope that lady is Ok. For me, from the time I arrived to the time I left, the whole ordeal was over in 8 hours including passing two Kidney Stone. As a former resident from Toronto, had I gone to a Toronto Hospital, such an adventure would have been 18 to 30 hours. To all of the Staff, Nurses and Doctors at Norfolk General Hospital, Thank you for the good care you gave me. Thank you for giving me lots of details to better understand what I was experiencing. In a way, the more I knew about what I was going through, the easier it was to cope with the pain. Now I do understand a little better that in a Hospital, it is not always first come first served but rather, those who are in need have to be taken care of first and if that means waiting longer, it’s because someone else is in greater need. Thank you all and Merry Christmas.

Foundation being able to purchase much needed equipment to provide timely and quality patient care is our reason to celebrate. Jennifer White, NGH Foundation Director is also proud to celebrate the community which came through in a large way for local health care.

“Donors gave generously to the Foundation’s Christmas Appeal, helping us to meet and surpass our goal to purchase new vital medical equipment. We have received over $100,000!”

NGH will now be able to acquire these important tools including 2 Electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, a portable Bronchoscope, a Glidescope, 4 crash carts and a syringe infusion pump. These tools are used to diagnose and treat patients at NGH every day.

White went on to say “With all the gift giving people must do, the Foundation is very grateful to be included as part of their gift list. Thank you.”

The appeal was mailed out to Norfolk donors in November with a reminder mailing at mid-December. If you didn’t receive an invitation to support your hospital and wish to make a donation, please contact the Foundation right away.

There is always a need. You can always help.Happy New Year!
