According to the census 2008 Kajo-keji county has a population figures of 260,000 individuals

3,069 HHs, 17,977 individuals mostly conflicted affected persons from Ngepo payam living with the host communities and in the churches of Bori Archdeacon and Wudu Baptist and revival churches respectively. There was no official registration that was conducted therefore no available registration list that exist. Prior to this assessment, UNCEF and SSRC were the humanitarian partners that had conducted an assessment between the 24.06.2016 and 30.06.2016, it was observed that, the IDPs were displaced from the Ngepo payam to the neighbouring Payams of Liwolo, Bori, Mondi, and Wudu most whom sought refuge in the various churches and parishes of these bomas as mentioned afore, ( Liwolo archdeaconry centre, Bori archdeaconry centre, Mondi and Wudu parish, Wudu revival centre and Jonda lee and Bajur parish) respectively and others in the bush. It was also observed that, the IDPs were in dire need of food and S-NFIs items since they were unable to carry with them their household belongings due to the intense fire exchange and long distance walk hence living them in a desperate NFIs situation. The team also found out that, most of the IDPs are willing to go back to their places of origin as soon as peace is reinstated in the area. According to the interviews with some of the IDPs who manage to make their way back to their areas of origin, they say, most of their shelter/NFIs items and properties like animals (goats) were looted by unknown and crops destroyed by very free moving animals. According to reports from the RRC, the state government, church groups, and some companies like responded to the IDPs by providing them with some food and few NFIs items. SSRC were also planning to respond to 1,300 households.

Summary of Shelter/NFI Situation -Summarise information gathered through questionnaire at Annex 2 -Include maps and photographs where relevant - Include any information gathered on community and intra-household gender dynamics, as related to shelter and NFI

At the onset of Friday, 10.06.2016 crisis in Kajo-keji county, Ngepo payam, most of the IDPs were unable to carry along with them their household belongings creating a significant NFIs gap as the IDPs shared the few household utensils owned by the host communities. During the assessment the observed blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen sets and sleeping as the most pressing NFIs need of the IDPs. The team also found out that, most of the IDPs were accommodated in the churches of Bori archdeaconry, wudu revival and Baptist church and others living with the relatives within the host community hence shortages in the little NFIs items and the tukuls owned by the host community. According to the focus group discussion and interviews held with the IDPs, host community, and the key informant, they found out that most IDPs were moving back to their places of origin and the few remaining behind were also willing to go back due the lack of household items, shortage of living space, and also to go and look after their properties (animals, household items, and the crops) that they had left behind.

Below are some of the photographs taken during the assessment.

Assessment/Verification Methodology -Which assessment/verification methods did you use and why (e.g. household interview, focus group discussion, shelter observation inside and out, market survey) -If verifying, are you working from an existing list, or are you creating a list from scratch? -How many interviews/FGDs/observations did you conduct? What questions did you ask and why? -Did you use sampling techniques? If so, please describe. -Is there any information you feel less confident about? If so why?

The team used the following assessment methodologies.

Meeting with the key informant; RRC, COMISSINER, LOCAL CHIEFS. Focus group discussions with the IDPs and the host community. Interviews with the key informants. Direct observations.

The team conducted about four focus group discussion in each of the four areas visited where the IDPs were located (Bori archdeaconry church, Wudu revival and Baptist church, Rodo and Kansuk boma, several other interviews with the key informants, IDPs representatives and host community as well.

RECOMMENDATIONS

If emergency shelter and/or NFI distribution is recommended:

Define targeting criteria -need/vulnerability (if vulnerability, define

The targeted criteria remained the same conflict affected persons mainly returning IDPs; the women. Children, elderly

vulnerability categories) and most vulnerable in Ngepo payam.

Specify items to be distributed -Number and type per household - NFI/ES, full kits, loose items -Specify if quantity of items distributed will vary by household size

The team recommended for the distribution of loose NFIs items; blankets, kitchen sets, mosquito nets, and sleeping mats. However, the quantity to be distributed is yet to be determine after a verification/registration.

Key considerations for distribution -Eg access, logistics, security and protection concerns, push/pull, stakeholders/partners to work with

During the assessment, Logistically, kajo-keji can be accessed both by road and air. By road it can from Juba direct to kajo-keji or Juba via Yei to Kajo-Keji, during the assessment the county remained calm throughout. The airstrip is also land able. However, the security route from Juba to Kajo-Keji was unpredictable. Verification should be carried out in Ngepo Payam as the IDPs are already returning to their homes, so time should be given for them to return so that the needs are verified at their locations where they should have settled

If emergency shelter and/or NFI distribution is not recommended:

Summarise reasons and propose next steps, if any -egreferral to other clusters
